Sidney, Neb. - Sidney Regional Medical Center (SRMC) state of the art long term care facility Pole Creek Estates officially welcomes in residents. Residents made the move over from the old facility to the new facility on Wednesday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Last week on September 12th, SRMC hosted their ribbon cutting and invited residents and community members to tour the beautiful building. The event was well attended by the community. The building had many amenities including carpet floors in the rooms, a salon, an ice cream/coffee station, dining area and so much more. 

The long-term care facility features a memory care wing. There are 63 beds throughout the facility, and some are double occupancy/semi-private rooms. The Pole Creek Estates is near capacity.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The overall cost of the project was $24.5 million dollars, and the project was funded by the board and USDA long term financing. "The board funded half of it (project), funded $12 million and USDA long term financing they did 12," said CEO Jason Petik. The idea for this project has been in the making for nearly 11 years.&nbsp;

The city of Sidney and its city boards, city council, community members have rallied behind this project since it was announced. "They have also been supportive of SRMC, just the growth of the overall circumstances within the community, within our organization", said Petik.&nbsp;

For doctors and nurses working in the facility it is exciting that the facility has a "home" feeling for residents and that everything they need is inside the building. "That's the goal, this is their home, but we also want it to be their community," said Dr. Rebecca Allard.&nbsp;&nbsp;

New building brings out new state of the art technology and the SRMC Pole Creek Estates is excited to have some including oxygen piped in the wall and having no call signs in the hallways but instead in an earpiece worn by staff which makes the building a lot quieter for residents.&nbsp;

"We have oxygen piped in the walls which is amazing, we don't have to hear loud concentrators anymore so that's amazing for the residents since it will be a lot quieter," said Susan Wecker, Director of nursing.&nbsp;

Staff toured other long-term care facilities in the state of Nebraska and this particular one in Sidney got many of its features from the location in Broken Bow but added its own twist to the project.&nbsp;

Residents will make the trip over to the new building on Wednesday, Sept. 18th hoping to have all the residents in their new home by 12:00pm (MT).&nbsp;

Sidney Regional Medical Center welcomes new residents in to the brand-new Pole Creek Estates

LINCOLN — Nearly $13 million in awards from the Nebraska Affordable Housing Trust Fund were announced Tuesday.

Established in 1996 by the Nebraska Legislature to address the state’s affordable housing needs, the fund is fueled by a portion of the documentary stamp tax from real estate transactions.

The Nebraska Department of Economic Development administers the program, which assists local governments, public housing authorities, community action agencies, nonprofits and for-profits that work with the entities.

Trust fund dollars can be used for housing-related projects, new construction or rehabilitation, or for first-time homebuyers through direct assistance such as down payment and closing costs.

The 2023 cycle was “highly competitive,” the DED said — with 70 applications seeking about $42 million.

The state agency selected 23 individual projects to share $12.75 million that support development of at least 264 housing units.&nbsp;

DED Director K.C. Belitz said&nbsp;<a href="https://opportunity.nebraska.gov/programs/housing/nahtf/" target="_blank">the program is proven</a>&nbsp;to generate strong interest.

“This year, funding requests from quality applicants far exceeded DED’s spending authority,” he said. “Each awardee made an especially compelling case for their project’s ability to meet local housing needs.”

23 projects to share nearly $13M from NE Affordable Housing Trust Fund

Nebraska Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) will be presenting the latest on the BQA and BQA Transportation (BQAT) programs and certifying/recertifying producers in BQA and BQAT. The BQA and BQAT programs educate beef producers and transporters on animal health best management practices, proper stockmanship, and proper animal welfare guidelines. “Beef cattle producers, who are committed to producing a quality, wholesome and safe beef and beef products for consumers, are encouraged to attend to stay up to date on BQA practices,” says Jesse Fulton, Director of Nebraska Beef Quality Assurance.

“By becoming or staying BQA and BQAT certified you are an integral part of beef's positive story to consumers. A story that can increase their understanding - and confidence - in how you and your operation are raising and transporting an animal that is fit to enter the beef supply chain,” says Fulton.

Many commercial beef packing facilities require producers who sell fed cattle to them to be BQA certified and those who deliver cattle to their facilities to be BQAT certified. If you have questions on how this may affect you, call Nebraska BQA.

All producers are invited to attend. BQA and BQAT certification is valid for three years. If your last BQA or BQAT training occurred prior to 2021, your certification could soon be or already be expired. Beef producers are encouraged to attend in order to keep their BQA and BQAT certification current. The certification fee is $20/person or a flat fee of $100 for operations who bring 5+ people.

PODCAST: Ogallala Indian Summer Rendezvous This Week (conversation with Tawny Craig)

United States Attorney Susan Lehr announced that Austin Priest, age 35, of North Platte, Nebraska, was sentenced on September 17, 2024, in federal court in Lincoln, Nebraska for one count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. Senior United States District Judge John M. Gerrard sentenced Priest to a total of 120 months’ imprisonment. Priest’s federal sentence will be served consecutive to a state prison sentence he is serving for state violations related to possession of meth. There is no parole in the federal system. After Priest’s release from prison, he will begin a 5-year term of supervised release.

On October 15, 2023, officers with the North Platte Police Department stopped a vehicle driven by Priest as it entered North Platte for a traffic violation. From prior intel, officers suspected the vehicle had been involved in the distribution of narcotics and suspected narcotics were currently in the vehicle at the time of the stop.

Both Priest and his passenger were asked to step back to patrol cars while officers checked their identification, and a drug dog was deployed while the traffic stop was in progress. The dog alerted to the presence of narcotics and officers conducted a probable cause search of the vehicle. In a XL men’s sized jacket pocket, officers located a pound of meth. The jacket was located on the floor of the passenger’s side seat. A search warrant executed on the co-defendant’s phone located a selfie style photo taken of Priest and the co-defendant that same day of the two of them, with Priest wearing the jacket.

During interviews, Priest initially denied being outside of Nebraska, saying they had just been to Ogallala. A search incident to his arrest located receipts from Colorado in his pockets, at which point he admitted having been in Colorado but denied knowing anything about the meth in the car. At the time of the traffic stop, Priest was out on bond, having been released by a state court judge on three separate state cases relating to either the possession of or the distribution of meth.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The recovered meth was sent to the state crime lab where it was tested and confirmed meth, with a purity of 95.7% for a total of 400 grams of actual meth.

This case was investigated by the North Platte Police Department.

A search warrant executed on the co-defendant’s phone located a selfie style photo taken of Priest and the co-defendant that same day of the two of them, with Priest wearing the jacket.During interviews, Priest initially denied being outside of Nebraska, saying they had just been to Ogallala. A search incident to his arrest located receipts from Colorado in his pockets, at which point he admitted having been in Colorado but denied knowing anything about the meth in the car. At the time of the traffic stop, Priest was out on bond, having been released by a state court judge on three separate state cases relating to either the possession of or the distribution of meth.&nbsp;&nbsp;The recovered meth was sent to the state crime lab where it was tested and confirmed meth, with a purity of 95.7% for a total of 400 grams of actual meth.This case was investigated by the North Platte Police Department.

The conference brings together Natural Resources Districts (NRD) employees, directors and others integrally involved in conservation, technology and policymaking. The event kicks off with the Ron Bishop Memorial Golf tournament on Sunday, Sept. 22, to raise money for the NARD Foundation.

Natural resources partners will open the conference on Monday at 8:30 a.m. with updates from the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service and Farm Service Agency, the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy, and the Nebraska Department of Natural Resources. The conference runs from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Topics include an overview and discussion of successful natural resources programs, new technologies and research for future programs. Speakers at the conference will also provide insight on water quality, groundwater management, forestry, and natural resources projects.

Annual NRD Conference Focuses on Water Projects, New Technology

LINCOLN, NEB.&nbsp;— Longtime volunteer Michelle O’Dea of Hershey, Nebraska, has been selected to receive the 2024 AARP Nebraska Andrus Award for Community Service. Named after AARP’s founder Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, the award honors outstanding volunteers from each state who dedicate their time and talent to enrich their communities.

AARP Nebraska selected O’Dea for her decades of service which has greatly benefitted communities across the state, inspired other volunteers, and supported AARP’s mission and vision. From training service and therapy dogs, to advocating for affordable housing, supporting our veteran and military families, and providing AARP tax-aide services, Michelle’s vital contributions have made a significant difference in people’s lives.

“Michelle’s dedication toward making community improvements statewide through diverse and impactful efforts is inspiring,” stated Suzan DeCamp, AARP Nebraska Volunteer State President.

Michelle attributes her heart for service to her upbringing. As a child, she accompanied her mother to volunteer at the local nursing home, participated in 4-H, and paid tribute to our nation’s service members and military families alongside her father who served in the United States Air Force.

Her efforts are felt far beyond the North Platte area, as she founded Domesti-PUPS in 2000 while living in Lincoln and would serve as the organization’s volunteer executive director for 22 years. The nonprofit works with over 125 volunteers, including incarcerated individuals in four prisons, to train service and therapy dogs—at one point having 40 dogs in schools across five states. She also volunteers with the Hershey Planning and Zoning Commission and AARP Tax Aide, among others.

“We’re thrilled to highlight Nebraskans aged 50 and above who are leveraging their life experiences to positively impact those around them. Michelle O’Dea truly exemplifies this spirit and is highly deserving of this recognition,” said Todd Stubbendieck, AARP Nebraska’s State Director.

North Platte, NE — The North Platte Public Schools Foundation is thrilled to announce that it has awarded a $10,000 grant to Catalyst STEM Learning, marking an exciting milestone for STEM education in our community. This initiative will officially pilot its program at&nbsp;Lake Maloney Elementary&nbsp;and&nbsp;Jefferson Elementary School&nbsp;during the 2024-2025 school year, engaging over 400 students from Kindergarten to 5th grade.

“We are incredibly excited to bring this opportunity to North Platte,” said Shreya Agrawal, Founder and Executive Director at Catalyst STEM Learning. “This grant will help ignite curiosity and creativity in young minds through hands-on learning experiences in science, technology, engineering, and math.”

Columbus, Neb. – Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) is draining the Sutherland Canal system between Lake Ogallala, Sutherland Reservoir, and Lake Maloney to conduct maintenance and inspection activities. The process to dewater the canal system will last until September 21. The canal will then remain dewatered for approximately five to seven weeks before refilling to normal operating levels. 

“It’s important for us to dewater the canal and conduct maintenance and in-depth inspections along the canal system to ensure the safe and successful operation of the system,” says NPPD Canaday, Water, and Renewable Energy Manager Kirk Evert. 

While canal waters are lowered, crews will be conducting general maintenance activities along the canal, inspecting gates, inspecting the Lake Maloney Outlet, draining down Lake Maloney and the forebay above the North Platte Hydro to inspect the penstock inlet, and completing maintenance at the hydro. 

While water is lowered at Lake Maloney, Nebraska Game and Parks will complete their angler access project to create additional fishing access to the south side of the Lake Maloney inlet area.

Food preservation can be a good addition to emergency food supplies since it is long-lasting. Using the right methods will protect everyone from foodborne illnesses that can happen from food that is preserved the wrong way.

“As fall approaches many folks are preparing to close out their garden harvests and visit the final farmers markets for the year,” explained Kay Schmidt, Emergency Response Coordinator at SWNPHD. “In the past few years, food preservation either by canning or freezing has become quite popular. Food preservation will extend the shelf life of meats and produce to place into your emergency supply kits, and it’s a great way to enjoy fruits and vegetables all year long from your garden.”

There are several methods that can be used in food preservation. When combined with proper techniques, these methods can provide a safe and fulfilling stock in your food supply.&nbsp; Some of the different methods include canning, drying, curing, smoking, freezing, pickling, and fermenting. Among these the most popular method today is still canning, either by water bath or pressure.

The canning method, if done properly, will destroy enzymes and remove oxygen from within the food. This will prevent the growth of bacteria, molds, or yeast. Botulism is a potentially deadly illness that is sometimes caused by bacteria that has the perfect environment to grow if canning is done incorrectly.&nbsp; The most common source of botulism is associated with low-acid foods such as most vegetables, some fruits, milk, meats, fish, and seafood. Pressure canning is the recommended method for these foods.

Beginning canners should start with high-acid foods and the water bath method until they are comfortable with food preservation. Some high-acid foods are pickles, salsa, some fruits, jams and jellies, and tomatoes.

Once the food has been properly preserved there are also safe methods for storage and maintenance. Here are a few storage tips to keep in mind.

Botulism is a potentially deadly illness that is sometimes caused by bacteria that has the perfect environment to grow if canning is done incorrectly.&nbsp; The most common source of botulism is associated with low-acid foods such as most vegetables, some fruits, milk, meats, fish, and seafood. Pressure canning is the recommended method for these foods.Beginning canners should start with high-acid foods and the water bath method until they are comfortable with food preservation. Some high-acid foods are pickles, salsa, some fruits, jams and jellies, and tomatoes.Storage:Once the food has been properly preserved there are also safe methods for storage and maintenance. Here are a few storage tips to keep in mind.<ol>
 <li>Label and date your jars.</li><li>Keep jars with other emergency food in a clean, cool, dark, dry place between 50 and 70°F. If you store jars at temperatures outside this range, the food inside can spoil.</li><li>Stack jars no more than two high so you don’t damage the seals.</li><li>If storing jars where they can freeze, wrap them in newspapers and blankets.</li><li>Remove, throw away, or use and replace any canned food and stored water before it expires.</li><li>Home-canned food usually needs to be thrown out after a year.</li><li>When storing safe water, it is best to use food-grade storage containers and to clean and sanitize the container before using it. Replace stored water every six months.</li>

&nbsp;(McCook, Neb.) — Weather permitting, the Blackshirt Feeders’ turn lane project will begin Sept. 23 on US-34, from reference post 0.80 to 1.20, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation.

The added turn lane work is being done by Shelco Construction. This project includes building a new driveway, railroad crossing and adding turn lanes to the highway. Traffic will be maintained with a pilot car and flaggers. A 12-foot width restriction will be in place. Anticipated completion is Nov. 2024.

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and to put phones down.

Added Turn Lanes Project on US-34 to begin, near Colorado State Line

LINCOLN, Nebraska&nbsp;– During Husker Harvest Days Wednesday, Sept. 11, Nebraska’s Natural Resources Districts (NRDs) recognized three individuals, who will be inducted into the NRD Hall of Fame later this month.

“Nebraska’s Natural Resources Districts involve many dedicated individuals working to protect our natural resources,” said Martin Graff, president of the Nebraska Association of Resources Districts (NARD). “We’re proud to recognize these outstanding individuals for the significant improvements they’ve made to our natural resources, and the NRD Hall of Fame is one small way to thank them.”

Annually, Nebraska’s NRDs nominate and vote for individuals who have made significant contributions to improving the state’s natural resources. Hall of Fame categories include an NRD Director, NRD Employee and NRD Supporter. The NRD Supporter includes an individual outside the NRD system who has shown tremendous care and leadership in Nebraska’s ongoing conservation efforts.

<a>Larry Moore served nearly five decades on the Upper Big Blue NRD board, from 1975 to 2022. As a past board member, Moore continues to be involved by attending NRD board meetings and speaking out on topics of concern, lending his insight as a farmer as well as his vast institutional knowledge regarding NRD matters.</a>

Dedicated to conservation, Moore has led by example in soil and water management, transitioning his family farm to no-till and incorporating cover crops. He has continuously invested in water conservation since the 1970s, moving from gravity irrigation to center pivots, and more recently installing soil moisture sensors and irrigation scheduling technology to improve efficiency and reduce the likelihood of nitrogen leaching.

His leadership extended beyond his farm, actively participating in public meetings and representing the area in the Big Blue River Compact. Moore’s enduring commitment to conservation and public service has significantly impacted the community and the environment.

Stanley Staab – NRD Employee (posthumously)

<a>Stanley Staab served as the Lower Elkhorn NRD general manager for 29 years. He began his career with Nebraska’s NRDs in 1979 as the information &amp; education coordinator at the Upper Big Blue NRD. He became the general manager of the Lower Elkhorn NRD in 1986 and retired in 2015.</a>

During his nearly 36-year career, Staab was instrumental in numerous flood control projects, the construction of recreation areas, and the development of rural water systems. He also championed the establishment of new trails, including the Cowboy Trail Connector in Norfolk.

Staab passed away on March 5, 2024, at age 77. His leadership and commitment to protecting natural resources leave a lasting legacy.

As a third-generation farmer and Nebraska’s 44th District senator from 2015 to 2022, Dan Hughes championed natural resources, particularly water rights during his time in the Nebraska Unicameral.

Serving on and chairing the Natural Resources Committee, he was instrumental in passing legislation to protect groundwater and land rights for irrigators and balancing the interests of agriculture and the environment. His knowledge of business and farming gave him the ability to see both sides of the issue and create a resolution that pleased both parties while also protecting the natural resources being disputed. Now, as District 5 commissioner for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, Hughes continues to advocate for Nebraska’s natural resources.

He also continues to be a good steward of the land and water on his farm that he shares with his two children in Venango, passing his knowledge and passion of natural resources onto the next generation.

Natural Resources Districts Hall of Fame inductees will be recognized at the NRD annual conference dinner banquet in Kearney, Nebraska, Monday, Sept. 23.

NRD Hall of Fame Inductees Announced at Husker Harvest Days

Gothenburg, Neb. - An eastbound loaded coal Union Pacific train derailed Sunday near Gothenburg.&nbsp;&nbsp;

According to Union Pacific spokesperson Meg Siffring, the eastbound train derailed Sunday morning around 9:25 am. 16 coal cars derailed as the result of the accident. No injuries were reported.&nbsp;

The derailment may cause delays for trains heading east and westbound. Siffring states the clean-up process is underway, and the cause of the derailment is under investigation.&nbsp;

Union Pacific coal train derails near Gothenburg Sunday morning, crews on scene cleaning up

(North Platte, Nebraska) – The third annual National Avocado Launching Championship came to a close Saturday afternoon after a day filled with comradery, competition, and of course, flying avocados.&nbsp;

This unique sporting event, at Pals Brewing Company in North Platte, consisted of a Friday night event for the contestants. They were given the opportunity to test out their launching mechanisms one last time and get a feel for where the competition would be taking place. After five hours of test launches the evening ended and the anticipation of Saturday morning was high.&nbsp;

The National Avocado Launching Championship began at 10:20am on Saturday. Contestants played through two rounds of pool play, followed by a 16-team single elimination bracket. The launching mechanisms ranged from trebuchets to water balloon launchers, spring-loaded devices to mounted crossbow-like contraptions, and more. The dedication and creativity the teams brought to the competition was incredible. Spectators cheered on the teams and many patrons of Pals Brewing came to take a look as well. After hours of competition, avocado mascot races, and trips to grab brews and food from Pals, the 2024 National Avocado Launching champion was declared!&nbsp;

Team Holy Guacamole of North Platte came in first place. Team captain Brian Johnston and his teammates Joe Staroska and Jeff Pearsal were awarded $3,500 and ultimate glory. The runner up was Brown Sugar 2.0 of North Platte. Team captain Daniel Vega and his teammates were the proud winners of $2,000. The other two teams to win prize money were Libertarian Launchers of Sidney and Avid/Candlewood Suites North Platte. Both teams were awarded $750.&nbsp;

Thedford initially responded with grass rigs T20, T21, and T27 with 6 personnel and Tender T45 with 1 personnel. While en route to the scene, Seneca was requested for dispatch, Seneca responded with T23 and 2 personnel. 

Initial units arrived on the scene declaring the fire now named the Black Diamond, very actively spreading north. Thedford Incident Commander requested mutual aid be paged from Mullen, Stapleton, and Tryon VFD's, as well as Thedford VFD's second Tender T44 and 1 grass rig from Brownlee respond. T44 responded with 1 personnel and T24 responded with 2 personnel. 

After additional resources from Seneca, Thedford, and Mullen arrived on scene, Brownlee, Stapleton, and Tryon units were advised they were no longer needed and returned to their stations. After the Black Diamond Fire was contained, Mullen units were returned to service. 

Thedford Fire Incident Command declared the fire contained and extinguished and returned to service around 1540.Thedford units returned to service around 1630. Black Diamond was contained at 138 acres.&nbsp;&nbsp;

After nearly 17 years of dedicated service to the community, Shannon Vanderheiden, Executive Director of the West Central District Health Department (WCDHD), will be stepping down from her position, effective December 31, 2024. Vanderheiden’s unwavering commitment to advancing public health initiatives has significantly shaped the health and well-being of residents across the district.

Under Vanderheiden’s leadership, WCDHD has seen remarkable growth and success, including the implementation of critical public health programs and services. Her tireless work helped build a healthier future for the area, and her contributions will be remembered for years to come.

The WCDHD Board of Health has selected Meghan Trevino, currently Assistant Executive Director, as the incoming Executive Director. Trevino, a North Platte resident, joined WCDHD in 2020 and has served as Assistant Executive Director for the past 2.5 years. Trevino brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to continuing the organization’s mission of promoting health and well-being. With her experience and dedication to public health, Trevino is well-prepared to take on this important leadership role.

"I am truly honored to step into this role and continue the important work of WCDHD,” said Trevino. "Our community’s health and well-being is our top priority, and I look forward to working closely with our team and community partners to build on the foundation Shannon has laid.
