The Mid-Plains Community College Rodeo Team is raffling a Traeger Pro 780 Pellet Grill donated by Mike’s Motorcycle and ATV Repair in North Platte. Proceeds from the fundraiser will be used to help offset travel costs and other rodeo team expenses.

The Traeger Pro 780 Pellet Grill comes with built-in WiFIRE® technology, which allows users to control the grill through the Traeger App or a smart home device and provides access to over 1,600 recipes.

Mike’s Motorcycle and ATV Repair also donated a cover for the grill. Bomgaars in North Platte donated the following accessories:

Raffle tickets are $10 each. They can be purchased at the college’s welcome centers in McCook, North Platte, Broken Bow, Imperial, Ogallala and Valentine.

The Mid-Plains Community College Board of Governors met for its regularly scheduled meeting at 6:30 p.m. (CST) Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2023, in Room 200 of the W.W. Wood Building on the North Platte Community College North Campus, 1101 Halligan Drive, North Platte, Neb.

Board Chair Ben Lashley started the meeting with a roll call. In addition to Lashley, those present were MPCC President Ryan Purdy and Board members: Jo Etta Brown, Kirk Crawley, Ernie Mehl, Kent Miller, Kim Korgan, Tyler Pribbeno and Tricia Schaffer. Board members Matthew Broz, Cynthia Duncan and Ted Klug Jr. were absent.

Also present was MCC student trustee Graci Nelson. NPCC student trustee Reece Halley was absent.

a. MCC student trustee Graci Nelson reported on student activities in McCook.

b. MPCC President Ryan Purdy reminded the Board of the National Legislative Summit in Washington, D.C. Feb. 4-7.

a. Minutes from the Oct. 18 Board work session, hearings and regular meeting.

b. The preliminary financial report for October.

a. The Board approved bills for October in the amount of $2,157,896.28.

b. The Board approved the 2024-25 tuition and fees at the same rates as for 2023-24.

c. The Board approved the housing and food rates as presented, which included an increase of $100 per semester for housing and an 8% increase in food costs per semester.

d. The Board approved 2024 membership dues for the Nebraska Community College Association (NCCA) in the amount of $74,865.03.

e. The Board approved the audit report as presented by Dana F. Cole &amp; Company in the Board’s work session.

f. The Board approved the Health and Science Center (HASC) Expansion Donor Recognition Report as presented.

MPCC Board of Governors meeting wrap up repor

Robert Smith, of Culbertson, receives the keys to the 2023 North Platte Community College raffle car from automotive instructor Bryan Herrick Wednesday morning. Smith won the drawing for the 1972 Pontiac Le Mans Sport in September but was not present for the announcement.

The Le Mans is the 18th raffle vehicle produced by the college’s Transportation Division. It was restored by students in the Automotive Technology and Auto Body Technology programs.

A total of 5,959 tickets were sold this year. Proceeds will go toward scholarships for students in the college’s transportation programs and to help offset the cost of producing the next raffle car project.

Mid-Plains Community College will close at 3 p.m. Nov. 22 and remain closed through Nov. 26 for Thanksgiving break.

That includes all campuses in McCook, North Platte, Broken Bow, Imperial, Ogallala and Valentine. The college will reopen to the public and resume classes Nov. 27.

Day 2 of the Holiday Auction 

North Platte Community College’s music department will host its annual holiday concert Dec. 6. This year’s theme is “Holiday Knights.”

The event is free and open to the public. It will feature performances by NPCC’s jazz band, the Jazzy Knights, and the college’s choir, the Knightly Singers.

“This will be a solid holiday concert, sharing music we are familiar with at this time of year,” said&nbsp;Kristin Simpson, NPCC music instructor.

The following musicians will be showcased:

The concert will&nbsp;begin at 7 p.m. in the McDonald-Belton Theater on the NPCC South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Rd., in North Platte.

NPCC’s chapter of the&nbsp;National Association for Music Education will have a jackpot drawing that night. Tickets can be purchased at the door at a cost of $1 each or six for $5. Individuals don’t have to be present to win.

The concert will be followed by a reception and refreshments in the fireplace area outside the theater.

NORTH PLATTE - The Salvation Army is gearing up for the holiday season and the Red Kettle Campaign started this past Monday. The Salvation Army is also preparing food box donations for Thanksgiving and Christmas, a toy drive and so much more.&nbsp;

The Red Kettle campaign is the Salvations Army biggest fundraiser event. The iconic red kettles are seen all around the United States. The Red Kettles started in North Platte this past Monday. Volunteers stand out ringing the bells in front of the kettles. North Platte will be ringing at 8 locations this holiday season. Union Pacific Railroad recognized a dozen customers and suppliers with the railroad’s first ever 2023 Sustainability Partner Award. The award honors Union Pacific business partners who have demonstrated both leadership and progress toward achieving sustainability goals.

“These companies share Union Pacific’s drive and commitment to finding sustainable ways of doing business that positively impacts our communities, employees and customers, while building a more sustainable tomorrow,” said Union Pacific President Beth Whited.

The award was open to all of Union Pacific’s customers and suppliers and was based on a company’s sustainability efforts, such as the use of innovative business practices to reduce their environmental impact. Also considered was a company’s track record of engaging and collaborating effectively with key stakeholders, including communities and business partners.

The winners were honored Tuesday, Nov. 14, at an awards ceremony held at Union Pacific Center in Omaha, Nebraska, where they were given a chance to share their sustainability initiatives and projects.

“We were thrilled to spend a day with our business partners, learning about their forward-thinking initiatives and sharing ideas on how we can work together to make a difference for generations to come,” said Kenny Rocker, executive vice president – Marketing and Sales for Union Pacific Railroad.

Registration is now open for winterim classes at Mid-Plains Community College.

Winterim is the period between the end of the fall term and start of the spring semester. Most classes begin Dec. 11 and end Jan. 11.

The month-long courses offer a unique opportunity to earn credits in a short amount of time and allow students to complete general education requirements over the holiday break.

The following classes are offered this year: Introduction to the Visual Arts, Personal and Professional Development, Introduction to Business, Literature of Nature, College Algebra, Music Appreciation, Walking and Jogging, Drugs and Sports, American Government, Intro to Sociology and Diversity Consciousness.

Post Sports Director Paxton Gordon chatted with former Husker volleyball player, current Omaha Supernovas Team Ambassador/Assistant Director of Fan Engagement Kenzie Maloney about the Supernovas and her role with the organization.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - The Omaha Supernovas are the first ever professional volleyball team in the state of Nebraska and gearing up for their first season in a brand-new professional volleyball league, the Pro Volleyball Federation. The league consists of 8 teams and the league plays a 24-game regular season. Omaha will host 12 matches at the CHI Health Center. The league's first ever match will take place at CHI Health Center on January 24th, 2024, between the Supernovas and the Atlanta Vibe at 7pm.&nbsp;

Maloney is originally from Louisville, Kentucky and spent 4 years when the Nebraska Volleyball team. During her time in Nebraska, she was a two-time national champion with the Huskers. Maloney was a four-year standout at both Libro and Defensive Specialist. She was an AVCA All-America Third Team member after her senior season in 2018.&nbsp;

For the Supernovas, Maloney is the Assistant Director of Fan Engagement for the Supernovas but also one of three Team Ambassadors alongside former Husker, Kenzie Knuckles and former Creighton Bluejay,&nbsp; Jaela Zimmerman. As a Team Ambassador, Maloney puts it&nbsp;hand in hand with her current position of Assistant Director of Fan Engagement. "It's viewed as a fan engagement position, so we (team ambassadors) do a good job of spreading the word of the Pro Volleyball Federation and letting people know what it is, where they can find tickets, where they can get involved," said Kenzie Maloney.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Holiday Auction kicks off this morning

Five members of the&nbsp;Mid-Plains Community College Shooting Club are headed to nationals. They are David Cudzilo and&nbsp;Kadan Wright, of North Platte,&nbsp;Blayzon Mooney and&nbsp;Nevayah Jones, of McCook, and&nbsp;Hoyt Dancer, of Sutherland.

The team competed in Colorado Springs, Colo. Friday through Sunday at the Fall West Coast Conference Championships, which is part of the Clay Targets Shotgun Bowl Series.

The regional competition provided an opportunity for team members to be ranked in their respective disciplines ahead of nationals. MPCC was the only two-year college in attendance. The team ended the competition sixth out of 14 schools.

Mooney was part of a six-way tie for third place in trap. He and&nbsp;Cudzilo both shot their first 25 straights in trap. Jones managed a personal record in skeet while Dancer also topped his PR in trap and sporting clays.

The team will compete March 18-23 at the&nbsp;Association of College Unions International and Scholastic Clay Target Program National Championships.

The championships bring together hundreds of athletes from across the U.S. to compete for top honors in all disciplines, including American, international and doubles events&nbsp;at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio, Texas.

The MPCC Shooting Club is raffling a&nbsp;TriStar Trinity shotgun, sponsored by the River Valley Gun Gallery and assistant shooting club coach Ellie Schad,&nbsp;to help offset the cost of entry fees and travel expenses.

Tickets are available from any shooting club member, shooting club head coach Heather Wright at Suds R Us and Schad at Lashley Land and Recreational Brokers. Both businesses are in North Platte. The drawing will be 5 p.m. Dec. 1. The winner will be notified by phone.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission said that if the dam fails that forms Carter P. Johnson Lake at Fort Robinson, campers at the Soldier Creek Campground 4 1/2 miles downstream would be imperiled.

That risk is unacceptable, the commission said in a press release on Tuesday.

The 480-foot-long earthen dam was built in 1935, and was reclassified in 2020 as a high-hazard-potential dam by the Nebraska Department of Natural Resources, which inspects dams.

The agency said deficiencies in the structure could lead to its sudden or complete failure.

Consultants hired by Game and Parks estimated it would cost at least $11 million to replace the dam with a structure that meets today’s more rigorous design and safety standards.

Instead, the commission has decided to remove the dam, and restore the natural flow in Soldier Creek, a popular trout stream in northwest Nebraska.

“Our goal is to mitigate the loss of Carter P. Johnson Lake with enhanced angling opportunities in Soldier Creek,” said Jim Swenson, the deputy director of Game and Parks.

Steps to improve fishing have been undertaken recently at other fishing spots at Fort Robinson, including the Ice House Ponds, Grable ponds and Cherry Creek Pond.

Draining of Carter P. Johnson Lake will begin this fall so that the dam can be removed.

Carter P. Johnson was a frontier officer who served five tours of duty at Fort Robinson, according to a June 1989 article in Nebraska History by Tom Buecker, the curator of the Fort Robinson Museum.

Johnson was a private in 1877 when Lakota warrior Crazy Horse was killed at the Fort, and was a sergeant during the Cheyenne Outbreak of 1878-79.

“He was a first-class officer with rather uncouth frontier ways,” was how one commanding officer described him.

Once, Johnson shot a cowboy in self-defense in a barroom brawl in Maxey, Arizona, after being called a “Yankee son of a bitch.”

He retired as a major in 1909, settling on a ranch west of Fort Robinson.

This event will celebrate the formalizing of Traffic Incident Management (TIM) partnerships in Central Nebraska and the group’s progress in moving TIM initiatives forward to improve safety, reliability, and efficiency on the region’s roadways and Crash Responder Safety Week which begins Nov. 13 and runs through Nov. 17.&nbsp;

This marks a major milestone in the NDOT TIM program. NSP Colonel John Bolduc and other area responders will make brief remarks. This event is open to credentialed media. Photography and video are encouraged.&nbsp;

Area first responders honored with Great Plains Health Awards

NORTH PLATTE - Eagle Media on behalf of the Schmidt Foundation, donated $5,000 to the Lincoln County CASA last week.&nbsp;

The Lincoln County CASA has been serving the county for 11 years and has helped 150 children. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) is a non-profit, volunteer organization that advocates for foster kids during their court proceedings. "We can advocate for things that a child really needs when in care," said Deirdre Nichelson.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The non-profit organization is already limited in the funds they receive. With the donation from the Schmidt Foundation, the money will be used to help train more volunteers. "It enables us to be able to train more volunteers, to recruit more volunteers, each one of the people that come into our organization and want to advocate for children have to be vetted and they have to be properly trained to do so," said Nichelson. "The more people that we can have that will go through that process to be advocates, then the more children in Lincoln County we can help."&nbsp;

The riding lawn mower has been recovered abandoned at the intersection of 9th Avenue and King Street. 

The SPD is currently investigating and is seeking assistance from the community in locating the weed trimmer and identifying the person who has taken the items. If you have any information or videos please contact an officer at 308-254-5515.&nbsp;
