Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) has confirmed a positive rabies case in an animal in the health district. The rabies exposure was from a skunk in Keith County, and only involved domestic animals. No human exposure occurred from this case.

“Even animals that may look friendly should be treated with caution if you are unfamiliar with them. Teaching your children about animal safety is extremely important to prevent any possible exposure to rabies,” explains Melissa Propp RN, Clinic Manager with SWNPHD.

In skunks as in other warm-blooded animals, rabies is a severe, rapidly progressing neurological disease. It spreads through saliva, most commonly through contact with an infected wild animal.

Rabies should be suspected in all animals that show a sudden change in behavior that is different from normal, such as animals normally active at night being seen during the day. Signs of rabies in animals may include any of the following:

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), rabies is a medical emergency. Any person with a suspected exposure should wash wounds immediately with soap and water and seek medical attention from a healthcare professional right away. Rabies is a deadly viral infection that affects the nervous system of humans and other mammals if not treated quickly after an exposure.

The best method to prevent rabies exposure is to ensure that pets, livestock, and horses are protected against rabies with current vaccinations. Contact your local veterinarian, local healthcare provider or public health department regarding rabies vaccination, testing, and exposures.

Positive Rabies Case in Southwest Nebraska

Lexington, Neb. - A Lexington woman has been arrested for motor vehicle homicide after striking her partner early Sunday morning.&nbsp;

According to the Lexington Police Department, officers responded to a traffic accident around 4:30am Sunday morning involving a pedestrian that was hit. The pedestrian was identified as 38-year-old Yuniesky Diaz Gomez, who was transported to Lexington Regional Hospital, with life threating injuries. Diaz Gomez succumbed to his injuries while at the hospital.&nbsp;

The driver was identified as 42-year-old Vilma Almanza Siles, who officials say was in a relationship with Diaz Gomes. Witnesses reported to officers that an argument was taking place between the two upon arrival home. Almanza Siles was attempting to leave the property when Diaz Gomez stepped in front of the vehicle to prevent her from leaving and was struck by the vehicle.&nbsp;

Almanza Siles has been arrested and is charged with Driving Under the Influence and Motor Vehicle Homicide.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The investigation is ongoing, and an autopsy has been scheduled for later today.&nbsp;

The event, hosted by NDOT, took place in Kearney at the Nebraska Safety Center showcasing the exceptional skills and expertise of snowplow operators from across the state.


The Snowplow Roadeo is an annual event in which local competitions are held in each of NDOT’s eight districts. The top two teams from each district then advance to the state competition, where they compete for the chance to represent Nebraska at the national level. This year, the national competition will be held in late Sept. in Loveland, Colo.

After a competitive display of talent and precision, the top two teams were announced, ready to take on the national stage. The winners of the 2024 Annual Snowplow Roadeo are Chad Shaul and Tyrel Yager, from District 8 in Valentine. These teams have demonstrated their exceptional skills, dedication to safety, and commitment to ensuring safe and efficient winter road maintenance.

The Snowplow Roadeo not only celebrates the expertise of snowplow operators but also highlights the importance of their role in keeping Nebraska's roadways safe during the winter months. These skilled professionals work tirelessly to clear snow and ice, ensuring the smooth flow of traffic and minimizing potential hazards.

Hershey, Neb. - The Hershey Public Schools Educational Foundation is getting ready to tee off for their 2nd annual Hershey Public Schools Educational Foundation Golf Tournament. The event is June 8th at River's Edge Golf Course in North Platte with a 10:00am shot gun start.&nbsp;

It's $320 for a team of 4 and what's included is a meal, cart and golf. Prizes, raffles and mulligans can be purchased at the event. Proceeds from the tournament is used for the Hershey Public School Foundation that can be used for many different areas like scholarships, for teachers, etc.&nbsp;

North Platte, Neb. - 4-H is America's largest youth development program across the United States that helps learn skills that will last a lifetime. The age requirement for 4-H is the ages of 8-18. There are many different categories that 4-H'ers can participate in during their time in the program including livestock projects which can feature many animals.&nbsp;

Sam Sachtjen, a student from Hershey High School, has experience showing off many different animals at the fair. He had two older brothers who were in 4-H, so Sachtjen has been around 4-H for a long time. Sachtjen, being one of the older 4-H participants, has gained many life lessons and created many memories while in 4-H.&nbsp;

North Platte, NE – Mayor Brandon Kelliher announced a significant decision regarding a possible Enhanced Employment Area (EEA) change at District 177. After thorough deliberations and consultations with various stakeholders, the changes to the EEA have been removed from the upcoming City Council agenda. REV Development, the District 177 development company, had planned to request an increase in the amount of funds that could be raised using the EEA if the City Council approved changes to the existing ordinance.&nbsp;

“After receiving input from several local subcontractors who have worked on the District 177 development and discussions with both the general contractors and the developer, I have decided to remove the Enhanced Employment Area discussion from the City Council agenda,” stated Mayor Kelliher.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Mayor Kelliher emphasized the importance of collaboration and open communication in ensuring the success of all development activities in the community.&nbsp; "The EEA ordinance changes may return to the City Council agenda only after District 177 developers largely resolve the financial disputes," Kelliher added. This approach aims to ensure that financial issues are addressed satisfactorily before further council action is considered, thereby protecting the interests of local subcontractors and the broader community.&nbsp;

“I am opposed to the idea that city government should become involved in the day-to-day transactions of private businesses however in this case city council is able to assist local businesses by creating the opportunity to clear up the financial issues,” Kelliher stated.&nbsp;

Mayor Kelliher extends his gratitude to the local subcontractors, general contractors, and developers for their ongoing contributions and input. Their feedback has been invaluable in making informed decisions that align with the best interests of North Platte’s residents and businesses.&nbsp;

 She was located dehydrated but otherwise in good health and is currently receiving the medical care she needs. We expect her to make a full recovery. A heartfelt thank you to everyone involved in the search and rescue mission. Your support and efforts have been invaluable. 

Special thanks to the citizens of Alliance who aided in the search, the businesses that helped comb through security footage, and our brothers and sisters with the Nebraska State Patrol and the Box Butte County Sheriff's Office.

Grape and Sizzle Fundrasier event set for June 7th

Hemophilus Influenza B, also known as HIB, can be a very serious disease for children younger than 5 or people 65 years and older. Although influenza is in the name, this virus is not related to the respiratory influenza virus or flu. Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) encourages residents to learn about vaccine-preventable diseases like HIB that used to affect many children in our communities.

Symptoms of HIB vary based on the type of infection but the most common are fever, chills, excessive tiredness, headaches, and muscle aches.

HIB is spread by direct contact with someone who has the disease, usually through coughing or sneezing. Some people who have this virus in their nose or throats can still spread the disease even if they are not feeling sick.

Some HIB infections are mild, like ear infections, while other times the infection may be more severe and lead to serious illness such as pneumonia (lung infection), blood infections, or meningitis (swelling of the brain and spinal cord).

Contact your medical provider right away if you or your child has chest pain, shortness of breath, poor feeding, abnormal reflexes, slowness, inactivity, or confusion.

“HIB is a potentially serious infection that can be prevented with vaccines,” states Melissa Propp RN, Clinic Manager at SWNPHD. “HIB shots are given to babies during their Well Child checkups with their doctor. Staying up to date on the recommended vaccines is important for helping to protect your child’s health.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) children need vaccines for HIB at 2, 4 and 6 months with a booster dose at 12 to 15 months of age.

Blood pressure is the pressure of blood pushing against the walls of your arteries. Arteries carry blood from your heart to other parts of your body. Blood pressure normally rises and falls throughout the day, but it can damage your heart and cause health problems if it stays high for a long time.

“You can beat high blood pressure,” states Lori Rowley RN, Public Health Nurse for SWNPHD. “Knowing your risk and following a good plan will go a long way toward lowering your chances of having a serious problem like a heart attack or stroke.” Earlier and better treatment of high blood pressure has helped lower death rates from heart disease in the United States, although heart disease is still the number one cause of death in the US and in Nebraska.

Hypertension, also called high blood pressure, is blood pressure that is higher than normal. In most cases, damage done from high blood pressure (HBP) occurs slowly over time. High blood pressure usually has no warning signs or symptoms, and many people do not know they have it. Left undetected or uncontrolled, high blood pressure can lead to serious health issues such as:

•&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Heart attack — High blood pressure damages arteries that can become blocked and prevent blood flow to the heart muscle.

•&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Stroke — High blood pressure can cause blood vessels that supply blood and oxygen to the brain to become blocked or burst.

•&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Heart failure — The increased workload from high blood pressure can cause the heart to enlarge and fail to supply blood to the body.

•&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Kidney disease — High blood pressure can damage the arteries around the kidneys and interfere with their ability to filter blood effectively.

•&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Vision loss — High blood pressure can strain or damage blood vessels in the eyes.

•&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Sexual dysfunction — High blood pressure can lead to erectile dysfunction in men and may contribute to lower libido in women.

•&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Angina — Over time, high blood pressure can lead to heart disease. Angina, or chest pain, is a common symptom.

•&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Peripheral artery disease (PAD) — High blood pressure can lead to narrowed arteries in the legs, arms, stomach, and head, causing pain or fatigue.

The only way to know if you have high blood pressure is to have your blood pressure tested. All adults should check their blood pressure every few years, and people over 40 should start checking it at least once a year. Understanding the numbers in your test results is important. You can learn what healthy numbers look like, as recommended by the American Heart Association. Following are the healthy and unhealthy blood pressure ranges:

North Platte, Neb. - A 1945 TMB Avenger Torpedo Bomber is hanging out at North Platte Regional Airport needing repairs before flying back home to Colorado.&nbsp;

The plane which is a part of the Commemorative Air Force Rocky Mountain Wing based out of Grand Junction, Colorado was flying back to its home base after an air show in Peru, Illinois when it made a quick stop in North Platte to refuel. During the service inspection, crews quickly found an issue with the magneto, and it needed to be replaced before takeoff.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The airplane magneto is described in a simple way as an ignition system. "An airplane needs two magnetos. on the left and right side and we need both to fly across the mountains," said Bill Shepard, the pilot of the plane. "For safety purposes, the left side of our magneto system has gone out on the fritz, and we air awaiting a new replacement part to have a field repair done."&nbsp;

The part is being flown into North Platte and crews will be working on getting the part replaced on the aircraft and Shepard says hopefully have the plane ready to take off around noon on Friday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) is an organization that restores and flies old aircraft to educate current and future generations. The organization is based out of Dallas, Texas. "We have 178 aircraft across the country in 25 states and 78 units," said Shepard.&nbsp;
