The North Platte Community College “Knightengales” are offering singing telegrams for Valentine’s Day.

Student members of the music club will sing to your loved ones on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday Feb. 12-14 between 12:00-2:00 p.m. on a first come, first served basis.

The cost is $20 for community telegrams, or $5 for on campus telegrams. This is a fundraiser for the NPCC chapter of the National Association for Music Education.

The river antlerless season was shortened due to reduced deer numbers across much of the state. That season now aligns with the rest of the antlerless seasons, and all of them closed Jan. 15.

Lincoln County Board of Commissioners 01-21 Agenda

Holbrook, Neb.- A man was found deceased in a ditch outside of Holbrook, according to officials.&nbsp;

According to the Furnas County Sheriff's Office (FCSO), around 1:15pm on Friday, FCSO were dispatched to a report of a man lying in a ditch northwest of Holbrook.&nbsp;

The FCSO states the caller reported to the 911 dispatch that the male subject was deceased. Law enforcement on scene searched the surrounding area and found the man had stranded his car in a stubble field, about one mile from the location he was found.&nbsp;

The initial investigation indicates no foul play was involved. An autopsy has been ordered. The identification of the man is being withheld pending notification of family, according to a FCSO press release.&nbsp;

Ainsworth, Neb. - Law enforcement, first responders were dispatched to the Grand Theatre in Ainsworth over the weekend for a bomb threat which turned out to be a hoax.

According to the Brown County Sheriff's Office (BCSO), The BCSO, Rock Co Sheriff’s Office, Ainsworth Volunteer Firemen, and numerous NSP officers responded to a report of a bomb that was placed in the Ainsworth Grand Theater Saturday evening.&nbsp;

The BCSO states the incident was the result of a false swatting call.&nbsp;

The BCSO would like to thank the volunteers of the  Ainsworth Grand Theater for their quick action to call 911 with details of what the caller reported.  As well as thank all agencies who responded to the call.

The event runs from 11:00am - 2:00pm and costs $5 at the door to get in. That $5 paid will let you taste all the chili/meats being served. The event is in honor of Ed "Caller" Clafin. The Lil' Guardians will be on location selling drinks and cinnamon rolls. Attendees will have the chance to vote on the best chili/soup, rib/meat and best decorated booth.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Two new members were sworn onto the Mid-Plains Community College Board of Governors Wednesday evening.

Molly Jeffres, of Ogallala, and&nbsp;Megan McGown, of Brady, both newly elected ran unopposed in the November General Election.

They join nine other members on the board including reelected members Matthew Broz, Kirk Crawley, Ted Klug, Jr. and Kent Miller who are continuing in their service. Among other things, they will be responsible for leading the college through policy creation and initiation and through articulation and evaluation of the college’s scope, mission, values and legislated priorities.

Jeffres replaces Jo Etta Brown, of Ogallala, in representing District 2.

Jeffres is the Community Development Coordinator for Keith County Area Development.

In her role at KCAD she works to enhance economic opportunities and strengthen community connections throughout Keith County fostering growth and collaboration.

Jeffres is an Ogallala native and graduated from the University of Nebraska at Omaha with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, specializing in management.

With a passion for creative placemaking and sustainable development, she works to shape projects that celebrate the region's cultural and historical assets.

Her community work includes leading the Keith County First Impressions committee and the Western Trails Creative District committee.&nbsp; Jeffres is also co-host of the regional Community Catalyst program.&nbsp;

As a new board member Jeffres said, “I am most looking forward to contributing to the success and growth of Mid-Plains Community College by supporting its mission to provide accessible, high-quality education and opportunities for students.”

McGown takes over the District 5 seat for Ernie Mehl.

McGown serves as the Chief Development Officer for Great Plains Health.

There she oversees strategic planning, the Health Care Foundation, marketing/public relations, outreach and initiatives to enhance access at consumer entrance points.

In her role, she also leads business development and service line growth efforts, driving the hospital's commitment to meeting the evolving healthcare needs of the region.

McGown, a Nebraska Sandhills native, spent 15 years in community and economic development. Her efforts focused on business recruitment, retention and downtown redevelopment, reflecting her dedication to fostering economic growth and vitality in the region.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Nebraska-Kearney and a graduate degree in organizational management with an emphasis in economic development from Peru State College.

McGown serves as the chair of the North Platte Area Chamber and Development Board of Directors and chairs the North Platte Community Recreation Foundation.

She is eager to contribute to advancing education and opportunity for the area.

“As someone deeply invested in the success of our communities, I look forward to collaborating with my fellow board members to support innovative education and workforce development opportunities that drive growth and create lasting impact for the region,” McGown said.

The North Platte Water Department would like to remind its customers that when the outside temperature is below zero, as it is forecasted to be, to leave their water running to prevent the water service and interior plumbing from freezing up.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp; Just a 1/8th inch stream of water running will prevent the main water service from freezing.&nbsp; This will save costly repair bills and the inconvenience of being without water.&nbsp; We have a device available at our office you can install in your toilet tank that will keep the water running constantly.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Please check your foundation vents to ensure they are closed.&nbsp; Check for cracks or openings that would allow the wind to blow under or into your crawlspace.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

North Platte Water Department releases Freezing Weather PSA

North Platte Community College will host a blood drive Jan.23. The event is open to the public.

The American Red Cross will be set up from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the concession area of the McDonald-Belton Building on the NPCC South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Rd.

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission seeking public assistance in the shooting of a juvenile bald eagle in Western Nebraska

The Mid-Plains Community College Board of Governors met for its regularly scheduled meeting at 6:30 p.m. (CDT) Wednesday, January 15, 2025, in the McCook Community College East Campus conference room, 905 E. 7th&nbsp;St., McCook, Neb.

Board Chair Cynthia Duncan started the meeting with a roll call. In addition to Duncan, those present were MPCC President Ryan Purdy and Board members: Matthew Broz, Kirk Crawley, Molly Jeffres, Ted Klug Jr., Kim Korgan, Megan McGown, Kent Miller and&nbsp;Tricia Schaffer. Board members Dr. Ben Lashley and Tyler Pribbeno were absent and excused.

NPCC student trustee EmiLee Walnofer and MCC student trustee Kendree Kern were also present.

a. Newly elected Board members Molly Jeffres and Megan McGown were sworn into office along with reelected Board members Matthew Broz, Kirk Crawley, Kent Miller and Ted Klug, Jr.

a. The Board reelected the following officers: Cynthia Duncan as board chair; Kim Korgan as vice chair; Kirk Crawley as secretary/treasurer and Matthew Broz as assistant secretary/treasurer. Kent Miller and Tyler Pribbeno will be the Board’s Nebraska Community College Association (NCCA) representatives.

a. MPCC board members completed a form indicating any potential conflicts of interest that could affect decisions regarding college matters.

5. OPEN FORUM (Comments from students, faculty, staff, public and Board)&nbsp;

a. Kendree Kern provided a review of student activities in McCook and EmiLee Walnofer updated the Board on the student activities in North Platte.

b. Dr. David Potter, speech instructor, shared a prepared statement on behalf of the MPCC faculty with the Board.

c. Dillon Hargrove, MCC basketball coach, and his wife Brooke were introduced to the Board.

d. The MCC Volleyball Team was introduced to the Board.&nbsp;

e. The MPCC Rodeo Team was introduced to the Board.

6. CONSENT ITEMS.&nbsp;On a single consent motion, the board approved:&nbsp;

a. Minutes from December 18th Board Work Session &amp; Regular Meeting&nbsp;

a. The Board approved bills for December in the amount of $1,640,227.28.

b. The Board approved the second and final reading of Policy 5210, Scholarships/Tuition Waivers.

c. The Board approved furniture updates for NPCC North Campus.

d. The Board approved change in Board meetings for 2025.

e. The Board approved replacement of the HVAC system in the W.W. Wood Building on the North Campus of NPCC.

Cabinet Reports: The Board heard reports from MPCC President Ryan Purdy, Vice President of Academic Affairs and NPCC Dr. Jody Tomanek, Vice President of Student Affairs and MCC Kelly Rippen, Vice President of Administrative Services Mike Steele, Director of Human Resources Rebecca Wrage, Director of Institutional Effectiveness Tad Pfeifer, Director of Institutional Advancement Haven Smith and Director of Marketing &amp; Public Information Daniel Stinman.

a. The Board went into closed session at 7:29 p.m. to discuss negotiations and real estate. The Board reconvened in open session at 8:42 p.m. No action was taken.&nbsp;

Radon Action Month, observed in January each year, is an initiative aimed at raising awareness about radon gas and its associated health risks. Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) works to educate the public about radon, how it is formed, where it can be found, and the health risks associated with the exposure. Many people are unaware of radon and its dangers, so this month provides an opportunity to share important information.

“Radon is present in every building. The only way to determine the radon levels in each home and building is through testing,” states Hunter York, Senior Program Manager at SWNPHD. “Nebraska has a very high incidence of radon in homes. More than half the homes in Nebraska that test for radon produce a result of more than 4.0 pCi/L.”

Homes are more at risk for radon exposure when:

· They are closer to the ground, such as basements or underground mines.

· There are cracks or fissures in the concrete foundations of buildings and houses.

· There are open spaces around sump pumps or other pipes.

The Nebraska Radon Resistant New Construction Act was passed in 2019, mandating that all new constructions incorporate radon-resistant features, which has contributed to lower radon exposure in homes. For homes that register elevated radon levels, a licensed radon professional can help with the mitigation process. Radon mitigation employs various strategies to decrease radon levels within a home.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends testing homes for radon every two years. By adhering to these guidelines, individuals can make informed choices about when to implement radon reduction strategies, thereby enhancing the health and safety of their families and homes.

Food safety is in the news! Numerous food borne illnesses have occurred during the last few years. Most of the reported food borne illness outbreaks have occurred from food eaten away from home. ServSafe programs are developed by the National Restaurant Association to address the growing food safety concerns of consumers. In Nebraska, the program is being implemented in cooperation with the Agriculture and Health Departments, the Nebraska Restaurant Association and Nebraska Extension.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

The ServSafe Food Handler program is designed for kitchen employees including but not limited to cooks, dish machine operators, shipment receivers and employees who handle and prepare food in restaurants and other food service establishments. The training provides information on food safety; personal hygiene; using thermometers; preparation, cooking, serving, receiving and storing food safely; and cleaning and sanitizing.

ServSafe Manager Course is designed for restaurant owners and managers, food service handlers, dieticians and dietary managers. The training provides information on sanitation regulations and standards, training employees in sanitation, safe food handling, food microbiology, contamination, food borne illness and setting up a food safety system.

Ogallala, Ne - Ogallala City Manager Kevin Wilkins joined Derek Beck in our Ogallala Eagle Media Studio on Wednesday morning during "Sandhills Spotlight" on <a href="http://www.z935country.com">Z 93.5 Country</a> to recap Tuesday's (January 14, 2025) City Council meeting.

Among topics dicussed were the appointments to the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, who report to the board. Karen Bowlin and Maria Parker were appointed to three year terms. Also there were new appointments to the Board of Health. Jessica Liebhart, Lori Rowley and Richard VanRotz were all appointed to three year terms.

Wilkins also spoke in depth about the construction at the corner of Highway 30 and A streets where GenGen LLC is constructing a building. They were awarded $12,000 for utilities etc. to complete the project. Wilkens said "people need to be aware that these economic development incentives come with strings attached for whatever you need to get your project done; in this case the best way to hook up the utilities was to go into the street to avoid a dead end utility hook up, so we're gonna pay them $6,000 upon connection once it's inspected and then we'll give them another $6,000 at certificate of occupancy when the building is occupied with the stipulation that there is the creation of three additional jobs. So you have a taxable investment which is gonna be about $300,000 for the building and then in addition they're gonna need to create three jobs by June 2027."

North Platte, NE – January 15, 2025 – Community Connections’ Drug Take-Back events,&nbsp; formerly known as Prescription Drug Collections, resulted in the safe and proper disposal of 169&nbsp; pounds of medications, including 5.6 pounds of controlled substances. Within the last decade,&nbsp; Community Connections has removed 2,491.81 pounds of medication (including 91.56 pounds&nbsp; of controlled substances) from our community.&nbsp;

The Drug Take-Back events are essential to the community and play a key role in preventing&nbsp; pharmaceutical drugs from falling into the wrong hands or polluting our water systems. Safe and&nbsp; responsible disposal of unused or expired medications is vital to the health and safety of the&nbsp; Lincoln County community, helping to reduce the risk of accidental poisoning, misuse, and&nbsp; environmental contamination.&nbsp;&nbsp;

These events were made possible through the ongoing partnerships with Region II Human&nbsp; Services, West Central District Health Department, Great Plains Health, Ready to Serve&nbsp; Volunteer Program (RSVP), Keep North Platte and Lincoln County Beautiful, Bomgaars, the&nbsp; North Platte Police Department, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, and the Nebraska State&nbsp; Patrol.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"By offering a safe, accessible way for community members to dispose of their medications, we&nbsp; continue to protect public health and safeguard our local environment,” said Erin Bone,&nbsp; Substance Abuse Prevention System Coordinator of Community Connections. “The ongoing&nbsp; support of our local partners is instrumental in ensuring these events reach as many people as&nbsp; possible.”&nbsp;

Lincoln County residents are encouraged to participate in future Drug Take-Back events to&nbsp; ensure the safe disposal of unused or expired medications.
