The Hot Sheets: May 26th, 2024

&nbsp; Lemoyne, Neb. - KLFD was advised at 1751 of downed powerlines and damage structures at Lakeview Estates subdivision. KLFD responded and found numerous homes and outbuildings destroyed by a tornado. During size-up, it was determined that people were trapped in the rubble. 

A Mutual Aid call went out to Ogallala, Brule, Imperial, Grant, Paxton, Arthur, Keith County EMS, NSP, KCSO, and Emergency Management for help. Once everyone arrived on-scene assignments were given to conduct primary and secondary searches of all buildings affected. The trapped people were removed and only one injury occurred. 

Hazards included downed power lines, and hazard trees. Once Lakeview Estates was cleared, efforts were then undertaken in the North Shore and Lemoyne areas for damage as well as the beaches with assistance from the Game &amp; Parks crew. 2 campers were blown over one at Beach access 14 and the other at 17. Total buildings destroyed at Lakeview Estates was 22. Total damaged at North Shore was 39. Other buildings further east of that area also received major damage. Thank you to all that assisted us through the night and again this morning. Couldn't have done it without you&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Hot Sheets: May 25th, 2024

Ogallala, Neb. - Lake McConaughy, just north of Ogallala was hit with severe weather late Thursday afternoon resulting in the loss of a few homes and damage to numerous homes and buildings.&nbsp;

At this time, it has been confirmed that three houses were destroyed due to the severe weather that hit the area. Sandy Beach Paradise located on the north side of Lake McConaughy was hit hard. Numerous houses and buildings in this area were damaged. 

After the storm hit Thursday, Keith County Emergency Management announced the closure of Highway 92 so fire crews can work on getting citizens who were trapped from the storm. As of now, no injuries have been reported.&nbsp;

On the other side of Lake McConaughy, Bayside Golf Course clubhouse roof took some damage from the storm. Friday morning, crews were working on the roof and the course was open to golfers.

The Nebraska Game and Parks has announced that Lake McConaughy and Lake Ogallala State Recreation Areas will remain open with campsites available. <a href="https://northplattepost.com/posts/5014374e-dc23-49ae-834b-c7bf81ee7328">Click here</a> to learn more.

Chief Sign Company out of Ogallala were on the north side of the lake near&nbsp;North Shore and the Lemoyne area cutting down tree branches.&nbsp;

In total, it has been confirmed that three tornados hit Keith County and nine total tornados hit the listening area. Severe Weather hits Lake McConaughy ahead of busy weekend

Despite high winds that tore through the north side of Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area May 23, the park remains open, with all campsites available.

Visitors should be aware trees are down across the entire north shore and crews will be working all weekend to remove them. Power is currently out at Lone Eagle and Sandy Beach campgrounds, but power is expected to be restored by midday Friday.

Some beach access is limited as a few areas washed out in the storm. The fish-cleaning station at Cedar View was damaged and is out of order.

The adjacent Lake Ogalla SRA also is open despite having downed tree limbs.

The highways to both state recreation areas were temporarily closed Thursday night, but have since reopened.

Visitors to both SRAs are encouraged to mindful of the weather forecast as well as clean-up crews as they enjoy their stay.

According to officials, on Saturday, May 18, Officers with the North Platte Police Department executed a search warrant at a residence located in the 600 block of South Walnut Street.&nbsp; The search warrant was executed after an investigation into a report of narcotic violations at the residence.&nbsp; 

While performing the search of the residence officers seized approximately 4.8 ounces of methamphetamine and 463 pills containing fentanyl.&nbsp;

According to officials, the occupants of the residence were identified as Terry Barthel (23), Adrian Kuhlmann (20), Armani Vieyra (30), and Twila Hamilton (44).&nbsp;

Terry Barthel, Adrian Kuhlman, Armani Vieyra and Twila Hamilton were arrested and charged with distribution or possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine (Class IC Felony), distribute or possession with intent to distribute a schedule I, II, or III controlled substance – fentanyl (Class IIA Felony), and child abuse (Class IIIA Felony).

Officials stated a minor child was found inside the home and has been&nbsp;placed into safe living conditions.

Ogallala, Ne - Multiple reports of tornadoes in Garden, Keith, Perkins and Lincoln counties Thursday began to come in from weather spotters and National Weather Service personell as early as 5pm MDT. Reports came in from Brule, Lemoyne, just west of Ogallala, south of Roscoe and northeast of Grant.

There were reports from the Nebraska State Patrol of damage from debris on railroad tracks near Lemoyne and Sandy Beach Road. In fact it was reported that Sandy Beach was closed due to search and rescue attempts although the POST has not confirmed that as of this story.

Sirens began to sound around 8:30pm local time in North Platte. The tornado in question was south of North Platte, southwest of Lake Maloney.&nbsp;

Multiple tornados rip through area Thursday night; damage near Lake McConaughy

North Platte, Neb. - The North Platte Public Schools Foundation announces its Distinguished Alumni group for 2024. Traci Dugan, 1981; Ryan Mueller, 2001; and Dr. William “Bill” Palmer, 1966 (posthumously), have been selected for their outstanding accomplishments.

The North Platte Public School Foundation and North Platte High School honor a group of Distinguished Alumni each year. These awards recognize the accomplishments of North Platte High School's most notable graduates.

A committee of Foundation directors, NPHS administrators, alumni and community review applications that are good for three years. Nominations are accepted year-round.

The “Flappers &amp; Gents, A Night at the Speakeasy”&nbsp; will take place on July 26 at Venue 304 in North Platte. Tickets are available on the Foundation website at&nbsp;<a href="http://nppsf.org/alumni/education-after-hours.html" target="_blank">nppsf.org/alumni/education-after-hours.html</a>

Dugan began her aviation career as a young girl. She accomplished her first solo flight at 16 years of age, before receiving her driver’s license. Her father, Gary Trego, a flight instructor, taught her and others how to pilot an aircraft at the family cattle ranch.

In an industry with primarily male jet pilots, Dugan earned her Airline Transport Pilot license and made a name for herself in the business. In her letter of recommendation, Jane Wilkinson said Dugan is respected by her colleagues as one of the best in the business.

Dugan helped grow the family’s company, Trego Dugan Aviation, into a business with aviation services, including private jet charters, airline ground handling on nationwide airlines, airline maintenance and avionics services at their fixed base operations.

The company has grown from a group of eight employees to thousands of team members across the country. Trego Dugan Aviation Cargo handles over 80 million packages a year, TDA Ground Handling manages 50,000 commercial flights, and TDA Charter handles thousands of private jets.

Dugan and her husband Vince joined Trego Dugan Aviation in 1996 and returned to North Platte. They have two children, Mathew and Mia.

Mueller received the 2022&nbsp; Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History Award for the state of Utah for his work at Mount Logan Middle School.

In a nomination letter, Larry Lang, Pastor, mentor and friend, said Mueller strives to make an impact in the lives of the students he teaches. Ellie McClymont, former North Platte Public Schools teacher and school board member said she has fond memories of Mueller’s wit and sense of humor.&nbsp;

Mueller graduated as a valedictorian from North Platte High School in 2001. After high school, he attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. In 2006, he graduated from UNL with distinction, earning a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education Social Sciences. Mueller also earned his master’s degree in educational administration from UNL in 2012.

His father, Al Mueller, introduced his son to Boy Scouts and was his Scoutmaster for eight years with Troop 291. Mueller earned 31 Merit Badges and held several leadership positions including Senior Patrol Leader and Order of the Arrow.

He received his Eagle Scout award in 1998 and told his dad that the lessons he learned in Scouting helped in his leadership roles.

Mueller graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and worked for four years at the State Attorney General’s Office while a student.

He began his teaching career at Wahoo, Nebraska, before taking the job in Logan, Utah. Mueller lives in Smithfield, Utah with his wife, Jessica Rivera-Mueller, an English professor at Utah State University, and their two sons, Luke and Ethan.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Paul Wagner, principal at Mount Logan Middle Schools, said Mueller is a “master teacher who is passionate about his craft, his influence among the students and helping young people understand the importance of American history.

“(He) has a natural presence and ethos that students respect and respond to from the first day that they enter his class.”

Susan M. Heine, director of learning at Wahoo Public Schools wrote, “Mr. Mueller facilitates students in their journey toward seeing themselves as a continual part of history and further conceptualizes that what they learn in the classroom will help them develop into engaged citizens capable of participating fully in the world as 21st&nbsp;Century citizens.”

Dr. William “Bill” Palmer (posthumously)

Palmer graduated as a valedictorian at North Platte High School in 1966. He then graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1969 and then from medical school at the University of Nebraska-Omaha in 1973.

He completed his Internal Medicine Residency with Board Certification in 1976 and his Rheumatology Fellowship with Board Certification in 1978 at the Albany, New York, Medical Center, where he met his wife, Leslie.

Palmer was the first board-certified rheumatologist in Omaha and was in private practice for over 43 years. He actively participated with the University of Nebraska Department of Internal Medicine for 25 years in the education of medical residents.

Marge Beatty wrote in her letter of recommendation that Palmer was supported and nurtured in a loving, Christian home during his childhood. His father was a state patrolman and his mother was the church organist at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in North Platte.

She said “His positive attitude toward life, his commitment to others and his leadership abilities were very apparent from a young age.”

Childhood friend Gary Westphal said his friendship with Palmer “deepened through the years” and “he was a warm, thoughtful and dependable person who remembered birthdays, anniversaries and everything else.”

Colleague and friend Joel M. Kremer, MD, said in an article written for the publication&nbsp;Rheumatologist&nbsp;in 2021, that Palmer was respected, admired and loved by all who knew him. “He was the genuine article, unencumbered and undiluted by what really doesn’t matter in this life.”

Palmer received numerous awards over his lifetime and in 2014 was awarded the American College of Rheumatology Masters Awards of Distinction Presidential Gold Medal. It is the highest award the ACR can bestow and is awarded in recognition of outstanding achievements in rheumatology over an entire career.

He is survived by his wife, Leslie, and their three children; daughters, Lindsey (Marc) Milanowski, Lauren Palmer, and son David (Maggie) Palmer.

Ellie McClymont, former North Platte Public Schools teacher and school board member said she has fond memories of Mueller’s wit and sense of humor.&nbsp;Mueller graduated as a valedictorian from North Platte High School in 2001. After high school, he attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. In 2006, he graduated from UNL with distinction, earning a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education Social Sciences. Mueller also earned his master’s degree in educational administration from UNL in 2012.His father, Al Mueller, introduced his son to Boy Scouts and was his Scoutmaster for eight years with Troop 291. Mueller earned 31 Merit Badges and held several leadership positions including Senior Patrol Leader and Order of the Arrow.He received his Eagle Scout award in 1998 and told his dad that the lessons he learned in Scouting helped in his leadership roles.Mueller graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and worked for four years at the State Attorney General’s Office while a student.He began his teaching career at Wahoo, Nebraska, before taking the job in Logan, Utah. Mueller lives in Smithfield, Utah with his wife, Jessica Rivera-Mueller, an English professor at Utah State University, and their two sons, Luke and Ethan.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Paul Wagner, principal at Mount Logan Middle Schools, said Mueller is a “master teacher who is passionate about his craft, his influence among the students and helping young people understand the importance of American history.“(He) has a natural presence and ethos that students respect and respond to from the first day that they enter his class.”Susan M. Heine, director of learning at Wahoo Public Schools wrote, “Mr. Mueller facilitates students in their journey toward seeing themselves as a continual part of history and further conceptualizes that what they learn in the classroom will help them develop into engaged citizens capable of participating fully in the world as 21st&nbsp;Century citizens.”<figure>

He then graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1969 and then from medical school at the University of Nebraska-Omaha in 1973.He completed his Internal Medicine Residency with Board Certification in 1976 and his Rheumatology Fellowship with Board Certification in 1978 at the Albany, New York, Medical Center, where he met his wife, Leslie.Palmer died on Aug. 5, 2021.Palmer was the first board-certified rheumatologist in Omaha and was in private practice for over 43 years. He actively participated with the University of Nebraska Department of Internal Medicine for 25 years in the education of medical residents.Marge Beatty wrote in her letter of recommendation that Palmer was supported and nurtured in a loving, Christian home during his childhood. His father was a state patrolman and his mother was the church organist at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in North Platte.She said “His positive attitude toward life, his commitment to others and his leadership abilities were very apparent from a young age.”Childhood friend Gary Westphal said his friendship with Palmer “deepened through the years” and “he was a warm, thoughtful and dependable person who remembered birthdays, anniversaries and everything else.”Colleague and friend Joel M. Kremer, MD, said in an article written for the publication&nbsp;Rheumatologist&nbsp;in 2021, that Palmer was respected, admired and loved by all who knew him. “He was the genuine article, unencumbered and undiluted by what really doesn’t matter in this life.”Palmer received numerous awards over his lifetime and in 2014 was awarded the American College of Rheumatology Masters Awards of Distinction Presidential Gold Medal. It is the highest award the ACR can bestow and is awarded in recognition of outstanding achievements in rheumatology over an entire career.He is survived by his wife, Leslie, and their three children; daughters, Lindsey (Marc) Milanowski, Lauren Palmer, and son David (Maggie) Palmer.<figure>

MAY 22, 2024 (LINCOLN, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— Summer is right around the corner! The Nebraska State Patrol is kicking off the summer travel season with the&nbsp;Make It Click&nbsp;statewide campaign.

"Summer means road trips, vacations, community events, family gatherings, and much more," said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “For all those trips, we want Nebraskans and our visitors to be safe on the road. That starts by making your seat belt click before every trip.”

Troopers, deputies, and officers from police agencies across the state are partnering for the&nbsp;Make It Click&nbsp;effort. The campaign began on Monday, May 20, and runs through Sunday, June 2, covering the weeks around Memorial Day, which marks the start of the summer travel season.

Troopers will be performing high-visibility patrols across the state, monitoring for dangerous driving behavior. During traffic stops, troopers will be looking for seat belt violations and thanking motorists who are already wearing their seat belt.

NSP was joined in a&nbsp;Make It Click&nbsp;kickoff event today by the Nebraska Department of Transportation, Kearney Police Department, Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office, Nebraska Safety Council, and Chris Haag, who told his personal story of surviving a crash because he was wearing his seat belt.

“I’m very, very fortunate to be here. I know without a doubt if I would not have had a seat belt on, I wouldn’t be standing here talking to you today,” said Chris Haag. “I would strongly advise everybody out there. You don’t know when it’s going to happen. It happened to me twice. Put a seatbelt on. It’s pretty simple.”

Troopers and NSP dispatchers will be working overtime to provide additional coverage during the busy start to the summer travel season. NSP's portion of this campaign is made possible thanks in part to a grant from the Nebraska Department of Transportation - Highway Safety Office. Any motorist who observes a dangerous driver can report it to the NSP Highway Helpline by calling *55 to reach an NSP dispatcher.

Sidney Neb. - The Sidney Police Department were investigating activity involving damage at Legion Park and Memorial Gardens.

According to the police department,&nbsp;The Sidney Police Department has identified the individuals responsible for the damages to the Memorial Gardens and Legion Park. The case has been forwarded for to the County Attorney's Office.&nbsp;

Sidney, Neb. - The Sidney Police Department has an ongoing investigation involving a rash of damage at Legion Park and the Memorial Gardens. The Sidney Police has collected several videos, witness statements and are currently working to resolve this matter as soon as possible.

Until this matter is resolved extra patrols will continue in the area. If anyone has any information, please contact the Sidney Police Department at 308-254-5515. Thank you to those who have already provided statements and information.&nbsp;

Sidney Police says individuals responsible for damage at Legion Park and Memorial Gardens have been identified

(LINCOLN, NEB.)&nbsp;—&nbsp;Twenty Nebraska State Troopers were honored Tuesday for their work to keep Nebraska roadways safe from impaired drivers. The troopers received the “Heroes Award” from Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).

“Every DUI arrest has the potential of saving lives,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “These troopers represent great examples of that life-saving mission. We’d like to thank MADD for their tireless advocacy to keep Nebraska roadways safe.”

Each year, MADD honors troopers, officers, deputies, and advocates from across Nebraska for their work to prevent drunk driving. Those honorees work in areas of enforcement, education and awareness, and advocacy. In total, 20 troopers were honored. Those troopers include:

In 2023, troopers arrested 1,187 people for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. So far in 2024, troopers have made 483 DUI arrests.

“As the summer months approach with family gatherings and community events, it’s critical that we all do our part to keep Nebraska roads safe,” said Colonel Bolduc. “If any of your summer celebrations involve alcohol, plan ahead and have a sober driver ready.”

20 Troopers Honored by MADD For Impaired Driving Enforcement

Lincoln County - One dead after Monday's head on collision with a semi-truck about 20 miles north of North Platte.&nbsp;

According to the Lincoln County Sheriff's office, on Monday, May 21st, deputies and North Platte rescue were dispatched to MM 104 on U.S. Highway 83.&nbsp; As deputies arrived on scene, EMS told deputies the driver of the silver Toyota was deceased.&nbsp;

The sheriff department also said deputies interviewed 2 witnesses. Both reported that as they followed the northbound silver Toyota, they noticed it was swerving in its lane and onto the shoulder for a few miles. The witnesses reported to deputies that there was a semi-truck and trailer that was southbound. As the two vehicles got closer, the silver car crossed the center line and struck the semi-truck head on.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The driver of the silver Toyota 4 door was 80-year-old Lloyd Gill of Stapleton NE, and the driver of the Kenworth truck was 67-year-old Robert Sailor of Curtis NE. Sailor was transported to the hospital to be examined and was released. &nbsp;

Officials say there is no suspicion that either driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.&nbsp;

Officer Parker was awarded the award for his contributions to&nbsp;traffic enforcement and community safety. Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) was created to end drunk driving effectively. Nominations open in January and MADD wants to find individuals who have gone above and beyond on focusing to end impaired driving and keep Nebraska safe.&nbsp;

Officer Parker was one of many individuals that were recognized by MADD that focused on getting impaired drivers off the road.

Sidney, Neb. - The Sidney Police department is investigating a burglary that occurred at the Rock in Sidney.&nbsp;

According to the police department, the incident occurred in the early morning of Saturday, May 11th, and the police department was contacted approximately at 5:30 am (MT) that same morning.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Sidney Police says it has performed numerous neighborhood canvases and have looked at several security cameras in the area to help with the case. Investigators are pursuing several strong leads.&nbsp;

Lincoln County - The City of North Platte and Keep North Platte and Lincoln County Beautiful would like to invite everyone to the Grand Opening and “Christening” of the new North Platte community recycling bins. Vessel christening has long been a symbol of bringing good luck to the team members or crew aboard the vessel. 

This has been one of the many traditions passed down from generation to generation, with the main message of the christening being to protect the “ship” and its crew from harm and to ensure safe voyages. 

Mayor Kelliher will be on hand to offer his well wishes to the bins and crew for many safe travels as they serve our community.&nbsp; Join the mayor and other stakeholders in toasting the bins for future good luck.&nbsp;

The event will take place on Wednesday, May 29th&nbsp;at 3:00 PM at 1st&nbsp;Christian Church parking area which is located at 220 North Vine Street.&nbsp; The location is across the street from City Hall.&nbsp; This informal affair will include a few words of wisdom, a toast, and a ceremonial first contribution to the bins.

The items received in the bins will not change. Each is equipped with 8 compartments holding tin, aluminum, mixed paper, newspapers/magazines and plastic #1 &amp; #2.&nbsp; Larger cardboard receptacles will be available at each location.&nbsp; You can visit the website&nbsp;<a href="http://www.keepnorthplattebeautiful.org/recycling" target="_blank">www.keepnorthplattebeautiful.org/recycling</a>&nbsp;for information on items accepted. A QR code is also printed on each bin that directs you to the website.&nbsp;

The engineering, fabrication and graphics were all done locally.&nbsp; The upgraded features include lower to the ground openings, doors that are easy to operate, graphics that promote North Platte, and clear concise labeling on items accepted in each compartment.&nbsp; Bin labels are created by Recycle Across America which convey a clear message about recyclables accepted. The overall goal is to increase recycling rates and decrease contamination of recyclable materials.&nbsp;

Official Grand Opening “Christening” for Recycle Bins set for May 29th

The state parks department is offering prizes for hikers who trek down 45 designated trails across Nebraska as part of a “Trail Trek” competition that begins Wednesday.

Participants must snap a picture of a Trail Trek sign on the designated trails, then submit the photograph online to&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://outdoornebraska.gov/about/press-events/events/your-parks-adventure/">YourParksAdventure.com</a>.

The more trails trekked, the more chances to win prizes that will be awarded after the hiking program ends Oct. 31.

The prizes vary from outdoor gear and a two-night cabin stay at a Nebraska state park, to an annual subscription to Nebraskaland Magazine.

Hiking and spending time outdoors is not only good for your physical health, but also your mental well-being, according to Bob Hanover, parks division assistant administrator for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

“Trail Trek encourages people of all abilities to join us outdoors to explore trails, see new sights, and explore healthy ways to spend time together or get away from it all,” Hanover said. “Nebraska has many great trails to discover.”

Several of the designated trails are at state parks, but others are at city, county and federal parks or those maintained by the Papio Missouri River Natural Resources District.

The Trail Trek signs, which feature the mascot Kit the Raccoon, are typically within a half mile of the trailhead. About half of the trails are handicapped accessible.
