Ogallala, Neb. - On April 9, 2024, Ogallala Police Department were called to 411 West 6th Street regarding a young man who had been shot and unconscious. After arriving, Officers were able to determine that Jeremiah VanLinda appeared to have been shot by Chet Stenzel with a Mossberg International 715T semi-automatic rifle. Keith County EMS responded to the scene and informed officers there was no sign of life. The Ogallala Police Department is being assisted by the Nebraska State Patrol Investigative Team.

Union Pacific's famed&nbsp;<a href="http://www.up.com/up/heritage/steam/4014/index.htm" target="_blank">Big Boy No. 4014,</a>&nbsp;the world's largest steam locomotive, will return to the rails this summer with a scenic tour across mountain ranges and high desert vistas in four western states: Wyoming, Utah, Nevada and California.

The monthlong “Big Boy Westward Bound” tour, which starts June 30, will honor Union Pacific's rich railroad legacy and celebrate the railroad's employees and communities it serves. For part of its journey, the Big Boy's consist will include an assortment of rail cars giving spectators a glimpse into what the locomotive looked like pulling freight in its heyday.

“The Big Boy locomotive symbolizes the pivotal role railroads played in shaping our nation's history, and the technological advances we have witnessed within our industry,” said Union Pacific CEO Jim Vena. “We are thrilled to share this living piece of history with our employees and the public, and we love seeing the enthusiasm this locomotive generates wherever its whistle blows.”

Big Boy will journey from its home base in Cheyenne, Wyoming, en route to Roseville, California, before returning to Wyoming by the end of July. It will make numerous whistle-stops in communities along the way, with public display stops scheduled in:

Gothenburg, Neb. - High speed chase in Dawson County ends near Gothenburg according to the Dawson County Sheriffs Office.

According to officials, on April 8th, 2024, at approximately&nbsp;8:47 pm the Dawson County Sheriff's Office was advised of a vehicle driven by a male subject that was possibly armed with a firearm and had an active out-of-state warrant for a felony offense. Deputies located the vehicle near Gothenburg on Interstate 80, and attempted contact with the subject.

After a brief verbal exchange, the male subject fled in the vehicle where it came to a stop in the Gothenburg area. Deputies approached the vehicle where it then fled and struck a tree. The name of the individual involved is being withheld at this time due to an ongoing investigation by South Central Law Enforcement Services.

The Dawson County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Nebraska State Patrol, Gothenburg Police Department, Gothenburg Fire Department and Dawson County Emergency Management.

Nearly 400 high school seniors to receive honor cords from MPCC

Kristine Henningsen has been selected as Mid-Plains Community College’s Business Student of the Month for April.

Henningsen is from North Platte. She graduated from North Platte High School in 1993 and returned to MPCC as a non-traditional student. She was motivated by the convenience of having the college close to home and her familiarity with it.

“I had previously taken classes from Mid Plains following high school and felt comfortable with the campus,” Henningsen said. “I have really appreciated the support and advice that I have received numerous times from my instructors. Their guidance and help has made going back to school much easier.”

Henningsen is currently pursuing an Associate of Applied Science degree in Business with an emphasis in entrepreneurship through MPCC’s online offerings. She is on track to graduate in May of 2025, and after that, hopes to obtain a grant writing certificate.

“My heart and passion is in small business, as I am an owner of a small business already,” Henningsen said. “I’d like to help small businesses and non-profits grow and thrive in our community.”

Henningsen was chosen for the Business Student of the Month recognition by all of MPCC’s business faculty.

“Returning to school as an adult, Kristine has exemplified the ideal student through her dedication, insightful contributions and professionalism in the business program,” her nomination letter reads. “Her outstanding academic performance, coupled with her ability to balance work, family and school obligations, makes Kristine truly deserving of this recognition.”

Outside of school and work, Henningsen enjoys spending time with family, including husband Brandon Raby, and their three French bulldogs.

LINCOLN — Seven Nebraska cities will share $4 million in state grants to help develop recreation and civic improvement projects in their communities.

Selected and announced by the Nebraska Department of Economic Development, the recipients’ awards come from the state&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://opportunity.nebraska.gov/programs/community/cccff/">Civic and Community Center Financing Fund</a>, which was created from a turnback of 30% of state sales tax generated by arenas and nearby retailers.&nbsp;

Revenues to the fund are rebounding since the pandemic, but the amount available for rural cities and villages and tribal governments this year was less than typical for the fourth straight year, according to the DED.

“People attraction is a top priority for Nebraska, and these awards are helping communities strengthen their appeal,” DED director K.C. Belitz said in a news release. “We’re investing funds to support the development of state-of-the-art recreation.”

Belitz said the projects help create gathering places that enhance local quality of life and pride.

The fund is designed to help plan or build civic, community and recreation centers or to convert and rehabilitate historic structures.

Such grants cannot account for more than half of the project’s total cost.

This year’s awards include a $100,000 planning grant to the City of McCook for its creative district.

Other cities poised to receive funds for capital construction projects:

From Red Cloud to Fremont, seven NE towns share $4M in awards to perk up community appeal

North Platte, Neb. - The North Platte Police Department is investigating a death of a man that was found Sunday morning in North Platte.

At approximately 7:13 AM, police officers responded to a report of a deceased male found outside in the 1100 block of Linda Ct. The victim has been identified as a 45-year-old male but next of kin have not been notified. 

The investigation is being conducted by members of the North Platte Police Department Criminal Investigation Division. The victim has some injuries that are concerning. No conclusions can be made until an autopsy has been conducted. 

An autopsy is scheduled for early this week. No further information will be released until the results of the autopsy have been received.

Chancellor Rodney D. Bennett expressed strong support for the program, highlighting its alignment with UNL's strategic goals. "The Nebraska Elite 11 Veterinarian Program aligns with two key aims of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln — attracting, retaining, and graduating Nebraska’s best and brightest students, and contributing to resolving pressing issues within the state of Nebraska," Chancellor Bennett said.

The scholarship initiative aims to address the shortage of food animal veterinarians, particularly in rural areas, where the livestock industry is a significant contributor to the economy. By providing financial assistance, the Elite 11 Program aims to remove barriers to veterinary training and encourage more students to pursue careers in food animal veterinary medicine.

Under the revised application timeline, up to 25 first-time freshmen will receive the Nebraska Aspiring Animal Production Veterinarians Program Scholarship, covering 50% of their tuition for the first two years. After the second year, up to 13 scholarship recipients will be awarded a continuation scholarship, covering 100% of tuition for the third and fourth years of study. Ultimately, 11 students will be selected as part of the Elite 11, receiving full tuition and fees for UNL’s professional program in veterinary medicine.

Dean Tiffany Heng-Moss expressed gratitude for the support from the state of Nebraska in making this program possible. "This is an important program that will have a big impact on our state, our agriculture industry, and on the students who take part in it," Dean Heng-Moss remarked.

It provides substantial financial support to Nebraska students pursuing degrees in animal science or veterinary science at UNL’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.Governor Pillen emphasized the critical need for production animal veterinarians, not only in Nebraska but across the nation. "Through this collaboration with UNL, Nebraska will be a leader in boosting the number of graduates in this field," Governor Pillen stated.Chancellor Rodney D. Bennett expressed strong support for the program, highlighting its alignment with UNL's strategic goals. "The Nebraska Elite 11 Veterinarian Program aligns with two key aims of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln — attracting, retaining, and graduating Nebraska’s best and brightest students, and contributing to resolving pressing issues within the state of Nebraska," Chancellor Bennett said.The scholarship initiative aims to address the shortage of food animal veterinarians, particularly in rural areas, where the livestock industry is a significant contributor to the economy. By providing financial assistance, the Elite 11 Program aims to remove barriers to veterinary training and encourage more students to pursue careers in food animal veterinary medicine.Under the revised application timeline, up to 25 first-time freshmen will receive the Nebraska Aspiring Animal Production Veterinarians Program Scholarship, covering 50% of their tuition for the first two years. After the second year, up to 13 scholarship recipients will be awarded a continuation scholarship, covering 100% of tuition for the third and fourth years of study. The event was a huge success in the kid's egg hunt but also the adult hunt, as over $3,000 was raised. Mid-Plains United Way is also getting ready for Giving Day on May 8th. The organization also recently introduced a monthly donation online from the organization's website if you would like to give a recurring donation.&nbsp;

North Platte, Neb. - NPIce concluded their second year with great successful. NPIce offered public skating, hockey lessons, drop-in hockey, learn to skate and residents and surrounding communities took notice and made the trip out to the rink in North Platte.&nbsp;&nbsp;

NPIce is already looking ahead for the 2023-2024 winter season and has sponsorships and project goals ready to go. A goal project goal that NPIce has been thinking about is adding a cover over the rink. During Feb. we seen a few days where the warm weather caused the ice to melt. NPIce will be a part of Giving Day on May 8th, planning on doing more dine out days and also having a glo ball golf tournament in North Platte.&nbsp;

Lincoln, NE – April 5, 2024 – Due to high sales, the Multi-State Lottery Association has increased the estimated jackpot amount for the Saturday, April 6 Powerball drawing to $1.3 billion or $608.9 million with the cash option selected.

The Powerball jackpot starts at $20 million and continues to grow each drawing until it is won. There have been 40 consecutive Powerball drawings since January 3 without a jackpot winner.

Ten jackpots ranging from $2.5 million to $365 million have been won in Nebraska since the Nebraska Lottery began offering Powerball in July of 1994. The largest Powerball jackpot won in Nebraska occurred in February 2006 when a group of eight coworkers at the ConAgra Foods ham and corned beef plant in Lincoln split a $365 million jackpot.

If you want to watch birds during your trek, visit Wildcat Hills State Recreation Area in western Nebraska, which boasts a diverse range of species. The park also has a nature center perfect for a break after your walk.

Other parks with beautiful trails in spring include Chadron State Park, with its ponderosa pine scenery, and Niobrara State Park in northeastern Nebraska, where you can catch stunning sunset views on the bluffs overlooking the river. You can also hear frogs calling statewide anywhere there is water, and many snake species will begin emerging from their dens in April, as well. Bring some binoculars, keep a healthy distance, be patient and you might see some amazing sights.

While you can find good fishing for just about any species, crappie and walleye will be especially favorable. Crappie can be found statewide in shallow water where they’re easy to access. As for walleye, they’re “king” in May and June, said fisheries biologist Daryl Bauer. Seek out large reservoirs, like those in the central and western part of the state, for the best walleye fishing.

Camping in spring allows you to beat the summer rush and avoid the heat. While you can find great camping at many Nebraska state parks, division administrator Bob Hanover pointed out a few that are particularly good this time of year.

One is Memphis State Recreation Area, located between Lincoln and Omaha. This small, lesser-known park offers a quiet atmosphere to relax in, a recently renovated lake, and a large campground with dozens of mature shade trees.

Hanover also recommended parks located by Nebraska’s southwestern reservoirs, such as Medicine Creek, Enders and Swanson state recreation areas, for a back-to-nature atmosphere. Louisville State Recreation Area in the east is another good pick in the spring, before summer crowds arrive.

If you’re looking to unwind for an afternoon lunch with friends or family, look no farther than your closest state park. By May, you can enjoy great picnicking in every park area; all have picnic tables, and most have shade and picnic shelters.
