North Platte, Neb. – Great Plains Health is proud to announce its participation in the upcoming Stop the Bleed training day, a statewide event aimed at empowering individuals with life-saving skills to intervene during emergency situations involving severe bleeding. This community event will take place at the North Platte Recreation Center, 1300 McDonald Rd. North Platte, Neb., on May 8, from 7 to 9 a.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Stop the Bleed is an initiative designed to educate communities on the immediate steps&nbsp; to take when faced with traumatic injuries. By teaching basic bleeding control&nbsp; techniques, the program equips participants with the knowledge and tools necessary to&nbsp; potentially save lives before professional help arrives.&nbsp;

"We are excited to be part of the Stop the Bleed training day," said Kellie Mahanes,&nbsp; Great Plains Health trauma coordinator. "Empowering our community with these skills&nbsp; can make a substantial difference in emergency situations.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

During the event, attendees will have the opportunity to learn from certified instructors&nbsp; proper bleeding control techniques, including how to apply pressure, use tourniquets&nbsp; effectively, and keep the injured person alert and calm until emergency responders&nbsp; arrive. The&nbsp;Nebraska Library Commission&nbsp;recently awarded&nbsp;Nebraska Library Internship Grants&nbsp;totaling $21,000 to eighteen Nebraska public libraries. These internship grants will support public library interns who will contribute to the scope and value of the diverse programs and activities in Nebraska’s public libraries.

“The internships are a great opportunity for students to get involved in library work. Beyond earning money and gaining valuable work experience, the student is exposed to the broad range of library services and programming. Internships provide an opportunity for the student to view the library as a viable and satisfying career choice. In addition, interns bring a fresh perspective and their own unique talents to the library,” said Nebraska Library Commission Director Rod Wagner.

Student interns will learn about library work as they shadow staff, assist with day-to-day library operations, and implement special projects. Some of the activities that students will participate in include:

•&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Summer Reading Programs for youth, teens, and adults

Union Pacific Reports First Quarter 2024 Results

LINCOLN, NE –&nbsp;Governor Jim Pillen has signed 10 bills into law and announced his veto of a bill he says would harm Nebraska taxpayers.&nbsp;

Legislative Bill 25 would make taxpayers financially liable for lawsuits filed against towns, cities, school districts, public power districts and other local government units. Taxpayers would also be liable for broad claims of abuse committed by employees and non-employees of those public entities.

“We must hold perpetrators accountable and protect children from abuse by enforcing criminal laws that exist and by targeting wrong-doers, not taxpayers,” said Gov. Pillen. “There are civil remedies already available to children and their families that allow for compensation when harm results from abuse.”

Bills signed by the Governor include:&nbsp;LB126, LB126a, LB937, LB937a, LB1023, LB1023a, LB1317, LB1317a, LB1402, 1402a.&nbsp;

LB1317 and 1402 both have emergency clauses and are effective immediately.

North Platte joins the celebration for Nebraska Public Transit Week

McCook, Neb. - One man arrested after leading McCook PD, Nebraska State Patrol and Red Willow County Sherriff's office on a high speed chase with his motorcycle on Tuesday evening.

On April 23, 2024, at approximately 8:13 pm, McCook Police attempted to initate a traffic stop of a motorist on a motorcycle. The motorist failed to yield and attempted to elude the office by fleeing at a high rate of speed. McCook Police initiated a pursuit which headed east out of McCook.

McCook Police called for assistance from the Nebraska State Patrol and the Red Willow County Sherriff's Office to assist in the pursuit. The motorist continued east passing through Indianola, NE. At mile marker 103 on US Highway 6 &amp; 34, the motorist turned around and headed west traveling back through Indianola.&nbsp;

The motorist, all the while, continued to travel at a very high rate of speed. The motorist continued to travel west until the motorcycle experienced a blown rear tire and came to a stop at approximately mile marker 91 on US Highway 6&nbsp; &amp; 34 where the motorist surrendered to police. Neither the motorist nor the officers reported any injuries.

The motorist, Alcide Baudlon, was arrested on suspicion of several charges including willful reckless driving, felony flight to avoid arrest and an outstanding warrant for his arrest. He was lodged in Red Willow County jail pending an initial court appearance.

LINCOLN —&nbsp;The University of Nebraska Board of Regents is poised to meet Friday and could consider the final candidacy of Dr. Jeffrey Gold as NU’s ninth system president.

Phil Bakken, the board’s corporation secretary, announced late Sunday that Gold’s appointment could be considered this week at a 1 p.m. meeting Friday, if all feedback is reviewed in time. The announcement comes just in time for regents to meet under the Nebraska Open Meetings Act, which requires five days’ public notice.

Last week, Gold visited&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2024/04/17/you-can-make-magic-happen-university-of-nebraska-presidential-finalist-makes-pitch-to-campuses/">each of NU’s campuses across nine forums</a>&nbsp;and will visit Curtis, North Platte and Scottsbluff for three more forums this Wednesday as follows:

“While today’s notice allows for the consideration of the President Priority Candidate’s appointment, no action will be taken until all feedback received (has) been reviewed,” Bakken wrote Sunday.

The review must include the Wednesday forums and online comments at&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://nebraska.edu/president-search">nebraska.edu/president-search</a>. Feedback can be submitted through Thursday.

Friday’s meeting agenda includes Gold’s proposed contract of employment. A university spokesperson said the contract might not be available until Thursday.&nbsp;

(Lincoln, NE) Today, Nebraska Treasurer Tom Briese announced the winners in the 2024 “Why I Want to Go to College” contest, sponsored jointly by the Nebraska State Treasurer’s Office and the Omaha Storm Chasers. The winners will be recognized&nbsp;before the beginning of the April 28th Omaha Storm Chasers game at Werner Park in Papillion.

“I’m looking forward to meeting with these talented students and celebrating their commitment to their education and their future,” said Treasurer Briese, Trustee of NEST. “I can’t think of a better way to celebrate young students than a day at the ballpark.”

Briese also thanked the parents, instructors, and educators who encouraged students to submit essays. “This is such a great celebration of students, their families, and the educators who encourage the participation in activities such as these. Enthusiasm for higher education is contagious. The efforts by educators and parents do not go unnoticed, so a big ‘thank you’ to everyone who encourages a young student to think about the future.”

Winners receive contributions to NEST 529 college savings plans, ranging in value from $2,000 for first place, $1,000 for second place, and $500 for third place.

Three winners were chosen in each of Nebraska’s three U.S. congressional districts. Three winners from outside Nebraska were also chosen.

The Hot Sheets: April 23rd, 2024

That’s the mantra Seth Brown has repeated over and over to himself the past few years, and it’s one the father of five hopes his children remember.

A former high school dropout, he knows a thing or two about conquering obstacles. He plans to share his story as this year’s student commencement speaker for North Platte Community College.

Brown was 16 when he dropped out of Shelton High School in 1996.&nbsp;

“At the time, I was a stupid teenager,”’ Brown said. “I thought money was more important than an education. I had been working for a meat locker, and I decided I wanted to work full time.”

He left home a couple years later and moved back to McCook where he was originally from. Eventually, he ended up in North Platte, where he met his wife, Ashley Brown.

Seth took a job working for Ashley’s dad, who owned the Sears store in town. He also partnered with his father-in-law as co-owner of a security company, which got him thinking about a career in law enforcement.

“I really wanted to be a police officer,” Seth said. “As a security guard, you are only responsible for watching over a premises. I wanted to do more to help people and protect my community, but I couldn’t be a police officer without at least a GED.”

He enrolled in the Adult Education classes through NPCC in November of 2021 – partly for the opportunity to be in law enforcement and partly to set an example for his children.

“I’m not going to say it wasn’t a challenge,” Seth said. “There I was, in my 40s, looking at stuff I hadn’t looked at in over 20 years. My kids probably get sick of me saying it, but I tell them every day, ‘You will finish high school.’ It’s 10 times harder to try to do it later on.”

Going back to school gave him confidence – enough to consider pursuing an associate degree.

“It was during the time that riots were happening, and police departments were being defunded,” Seth said. “So, I was starting to rethink whether or not that was the field I wanted to go into.”

He was just getting ready to take his last test for the GED when he toured the college’s Electrical Technology department.

“When I walked in there, I asked myself, ‘What am I doing here? I’m afraid of electricity.’ But, as soon as I met Jake [Elmshaeuser], the instructor, I knew that’s where I needed to be,” Seth said. “We clicked right away.”

He immediately appreciated how relatable and professional Jake was.

“Jake is a lot like me. He’s up front and hands-on, and that’s how I learn,” Seth said. “He takes a lot of pride in what he does, and so do I, which is probably what I love the most about his program. If you fail, it’s because you aren’t putting the work in. Jake knows his stuff, and he expects you to know it, too. I go to class every day excited about what I’m going to do next.”

Seth earned his GED in the spring of 2023 then jumped right into three online summer classes. That left him with only two classes when he started in the electrical program last fall.

“Probably one of the biggest accomplishments for me came when we did the mock-ups and had to learn how to wire a room and put in the devices and lights,” Seth said. “When I got done, there was this proud feeling of ‘I did this, and it looks good.’ I want to be able to do that in the field, so when someone walks into a new building and sees all the conduit, they can say, ‘Wow. That’s some good work.’ That brings joy and pride to me.”

Commencement isn’t the end for Seth. He will have eight weeks of extra motor control classes this summer, and after that, will go to work for Snell Services.

He’s grateful for the opportunities NPCC offered him and is hopeful that his kids can take something away from watching his journey.

“The biggest thing that I hope, and know, they should get out of this is that if you want to do something, the only person stopping you is you,” Seth said. “If you put your mind to it and do the work, you can complete and achieve anything.”

Non-traditional student overcomes the odds, sets example for family

Donations to the North Platte Community College Foundation on Giving Day will be put toward a new building for the college’s Electrical Technology program.

North Platte Giving Day is a 24-hour fundraising event that encourages charitable contributions to local nonprofits, one of which is the NPCC Foundation. It happens every year, and this year, falls on May 8. Gifts can be prescheduled beginning Thursday.

“The electrical technology program has seen full enrollments with occasional waitlists of students over the last several years,” said Ryan Purdy, college president. “That, coupled with the large demand from employers for residential and commercial electricians as well as electrical automation engineers, led us to pursue the expansion of our electrical technology building. The expectation is to increase enrollment significantly to meet workforce demands. I would like to thank those who have already committed to helping make this project a reality.”

The total cost of the project is estimated to be about $5 million. Of that, $3 million will come from the college’s capital levy, and the remaining $2 million will be privately raised through the NPCC Foundation.

As an incentive, the NPCC Foundation&nbsp;announced&nbsp;a match for&nbsp;all Giving Day donations to the Electrical Technology program up to $25,000.

“The North Platte Community College Foundation Board is honored to be a part of making this capital campaign a reality,” said NPCC Foundation Board Chair, Daren Wilkinson. “As a professional in the construction industry, I see the demand every day for quality electricians. Encouraging NPCC electrical program alumni, industry partners and other interested donors to help get this project to the finish line through a matching grant was an easy decision for the board. I would like to say thanks in advance to those considering a donation to such a worthwhile project.”

NPCC Electrical Technology program to benefit from North Platte Giving Day

Kimball, Neb. - No serious injuries were reported after the Kimball Sherrif's Office responded to a one vehicle accident on Saturday, April 20th.

According to officials, the department responded to a one vehicle rollover on South 71 Highway. There were no serious injuries. Kimball EMS also responded to the scene. Winter weather conditions were in the area at the time of the accident.
