NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (June 16, 2025) — As the 70th annual Miss Rodeo Nebraska pageant unfolds this week in North Platte, three young women from across the state are competing for the prestigious title ahead of the Buffalo Bill Rodeo's opening night Wednesday.

Contestants Brylee Thompson of Hershey, Jessica Lange of Crofton, and Maycie Johnson of Oakdale are showcasing their horsemanship, public speaking, fashion, and rodeo knowledge as they vie for the honor of becoming Miss Rodeo Nebraska 2026.

The competition began with horsemanship at the Wild West Arena and continued with impromptu interviews, a barbecue meet-and-greet, and formal speeches. Contestants will also be evaluated on their social media engagement, a modern element of the pageant that reflects the evolving role of rodeo queens as public ambassadors.

Thompson, who began competing in pageants at age 10, called it a “privilege” to be in the running for Nebraska’s top rodeo title. “You rarely bring your own horse to a rodeo as Miss Rodeo Nebraska,” she said. “It’s important to be able to ride different horses and navigate each arena confidently.”

Lange, representing northeast Nebraska, emphasized how social media has expanded the reach and impact of the role. “I don’t have a large cheering section here, but through social media, so many people back home can follow the pageant and support me,” she said.

Johnson, the third contestant, is newer to pageantry but comes from a background in barrel racing. “It’s about the bond between you and your horse,” she said. “That trust and communication is everything in barrel racing and something I’m excited to bring to this experience.”

This year’s style show, a fan-favorite event where contestants display Western fashion flair, will take place Tuesday night at Venue 304 in downtown North Platte — a new location for the occasion. Doors open at 6 p.m., followed by a fundraising auction at 6:30 and the show at 7.

The pageant will culminate Wednesday with the coronation of Miss Rodeo Nebraska 2026, just before the start of the Buffalo Bill Rodeo at the Wild West Arena.

OGALLALA, Neb. (June 13, 2025) — Anglers are seeing solid success on Lake McConaughy this week, with a strong night bite for walleye reported near the face of the dam, according to the latest outdoor report from Nebraska Game and Parks.

Walleye are also being caught in 8 to 20 feet of water near Lemoyne, where a good white bass bite is underway. During the day, smallmouth bass of notable size are being reeled in along the rocky points on the lake’s south side and near the dam.

Surface water temperatures near the dam are holding around 66 degrees Fahrenheit.

Lake McConaughy is currently at an elevation of 3,234.8 feet, with a storage level of 74,600 acre-feet — about 55.9% of capacity. Inflows this week are around 850 cubic feet per second, while outflows are at approximately 2,400 cfs. With Father’s Day weekend approaching, both Lake McConaughy and Lake Ogallala remain popular destinations, but campsites — including basic, electric, and primitive sites — are still available. “Understanding Your Dog,” a two-hour class led by dog trainer Kaitlyn Garro, will be held Wednesday, June 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the college’s Ogallala campus. The course costs $20 and is open to anyone interested in learning more about canine psychology and training techniques.

Garro, a former Illinois-based trainer, said the class aims to help people “see inside their dog’s head” and understand what truly motivates their behavior.

“A lot of people think a Chihuahua doesn’t really need that much training, but believe me, they do,” Garro said. “Same with any other dog. They all need a little shaping.”

Participants will explore everyday tools and approaches to reinforce positive behavior and decode common canine quirks.

OGALLALA, Neb. — As summer begins to heat up, the Ogallala City Council faced a packed agenda Tuesday night, with discussion spanning fireworks restrictions, a new drone show, street repairs, and public transit funding.

City Manager Kevin Wilkins recapped the meeting Wednesday morning in an interview with the Sandhills Post, highlighting the council’s efforts to balance public safety, fiscal responsibility, and community engagement amid a summer season already shaped by drought concerns and budgetary challenges.

One of the most emotionally charged topics of the night was the city’s ongoing fireworks ban. With a fire ban in place for several months and Keith County maintaining restrictions due to dry conditions, Wilkins said city leaders weighed the risks against the public’s desire for tradition.

“There’s a general understanding that within city limits, where you’ve got irrigated lawns, concrete streets, and garden hoses, the risk of wildfires is much lower,” Wilkins said. “But staying in harmony with the county is important, especially when many don’t recognize the boundary between the two jurisdictions.”

Despite some community support for limited fireworks within the city, the council voted 3-2 to remain aligned with the county’s ban—at least for now. A review is scheduled for June 24. If the county lifts its ban and conditions improve, the city may follow suit.

“The public discussion was courteous and respectful,” Wilkins added. “It worked the way government should.”

With traditional fireworks off the table, Ogallala will light up the sky with a modern twist: a drone light show on Saturday, July 5.

The city secured a 200-drone performance at a discounted rate of $25,000—the same amount it had budgeted for fireworks.

However, Wilkins noted that fundraising fell $6,000 short this year, with taxpayers ultimately covering more than $12,000 of the event’s cost. As a result, the city is stepping away from organizing future July 4th celebrations, encouraging civic groups to take the lead.

“In years past, it was local organizations like the Chamber putting on these shows,” Wilkins said. “Now it’s time to return that responsibility to the community.”

The council confirmed that while the city won’t manage future events, it remains open to financially supporting qualified civic or private efforts.

In other business, the council approved a contract for federally mandated public transit scheduling software, despite concerns over upcoming state budget cuts that may slash funding by as much as 30%.

“We don’t like the software, and it will disrupt how we currently manage transit,” Wilkins said. “But we’re mandated to have it, so we went ahead with the purchase this year to avoid further complications down the road.”

The council also passed a resolution enabling Ogallala to enter into the 5311 Federal Transit Administration program for ongoing funding, despite the uncertainty surrounding future allocations.

An item brought forward by Police Chief James Herman and Wilkins aimed to allow for negotiation of vehicle impound fees under extenuating circumstances. The council, however, rejected the proposal.

“Our current laws don’t allow for fee negotiation unless explicitly stated,” Wilkins said. “The council was not comfortable giving that authority to the police chief and city manager.”

Until a formal policy is developed, all impound fee disputes will be directed to the council on a case-by-case basis.

A paving project near City Hall and the Fire Hall is moving forward, but not without procedural hiccups. The council will consider an engineering agreement at its June 24 meeting, with hopes to seek bids in early July.

The city also discussed potential solutions to its aging curb stop infrastructure. Wilkins reported that approximately 30 curb stops—underground valves that control water flow—are in need of repair.

While no action was taken, the council is exploring whether to budget $100,000 annually for repairs or offer incentives to property owners. Since 2018, the city has not enforced mandatory repairs for failing curb stops.

“We’re trying to determine how much of that responsibility the city wants to take on,” Wilkins said. “But any decision will have a direct impact on water rates, as the water and sewer funds must remain self-sufficient.”

The next Ogallala City Council meeting is scheduled for June 24. At that time, the council is expected to revisit the fireworks ban and formalize plans for the paving project.

As Wilkins noted, the goal remains to keep the city informed and responsive, even during a summer season filled with uncertainty.

“Our community shows up. Whether it’s for fireworks, street repairs, or civic discussions,” he said. “That’s what keeps Ogallala moving forward.”

Ogallala City Council Recap: Fireworks, Funding, and Infrastructure: Ogallala City Council Meeting Tackles Summer Priorities

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — The historic Buffalo Bill Rodeo, now recognized as Nebraska’s largest rodeo and a PRCA Hall of Fame event, kicks off its four-night run next Wednesday, June 18, in North Platte.

Levi Fisher, chairman of the Buffalo Bill Rodeo Committee, and Justin Thompson, co-chair, joined Derek Beck of the North Platte Post this week to preview the annual event, which runs through June 21 as part of NebraskaLand Days.

“We’re now the largest rodeo in Nebraska with what we’ve increased our purse to,” said Fisher. “It’s all about trying to up ourselves every year. Everybody knows about NebraskaLand Days and the Buffalo Bill Rodeo—we just want to keep building on that legacy.”

Organizers credit community support, longstanding sponsorships and a deep roster of volunteers for the rodeo’s continued success and national reputation. Fisher noted that North Platte’s pride in hosting the event fuels its growth and helps attract top-tier rodeo athletes.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (June 10, 2025)&nbsp;— The Miss Rodeo Nebraska Organization is preparing to launch its 70th anniversary celebration this Sunday, June 15, with a full week of events in North Platte, coinciding with the start of NebraskaLand Days.

The festivities begin at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Wild West Arena with the horsemanship competition, a public event showcasing contestants’ riding skills. Miss contestants will ride horses not their own, while teen contestants will compete on their personal mounts. A community barbecue and raffle will follow at the pavilion, and the speech competition will take place at 5 p.m. at North Platte Community College.

“This is such a great opportunity for the public to come out and see what these young women are capable of,” said Charlotte Wagner, a board member with the Miss Rodeo Nebraska Organization. “Horsemanship is a huge part of what we do, and it’s really exciting to watch.”

This year’s competition features three Miss contestants and two Teen contestants. The organization is also welcoming back former titleholders as part of its 70th anniversary celebration.

On Monday, June 16, the annual Miss Rodeo Nebraska Style Show will be held at Venue 304, beginning with a social hour at 6 p.m. The event will include a fashion show and vendor booths, offering a more intimate and formal setting than in previous years.

The Miss Teen Rodeo Nebraska Coronation is scheduled for Tuesday evening at the college, moved from its traditional midday slot to allow more community members to attend after work.

The new Miss Rodeo Nebraska will be crowned Wednesday night during the rodeo at 7:30 p.m. at the Wild West Arena. Visiting royalty, including Miss Rodeo America and five state queens, will be in attendance throughout the week.

“Even after the coronation, the work isn’t done,” Wagner said. “There’s still paperwork, appearances, and a lot of behind-the-scenes effort that continues through Thursday.”

Baseball's Last Frontier: Stories from the Pecos League - Pat Jordan Joins Us This Week!

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — David P. Huebner, a North Platte native, former Border Patrol agent, and agricultural producer, has officially announced his candidacy for Nebraska’s 3rd Congressional District. He will run as a conservative Republican, challenging longtime incumbent Rep. Adrian Smith of Gering, who has held the seat since 2007.

In an interview on Sandhills Spotlight On Eagle Media's <a href="http://www.z935country.com">Z 93.5 Country</a> with Derek Beck this week, Huebner emphasized his deep local roots and hands-on experience in farming, law enforcement, and small business ownership as key qualifications for the role.

“I want someone in Congress who has skin in the game,” Huebner said. “Someone who knows what it’s like to get up in a snowstorm to check on calves or to put on a badge and a gun and serve on the southern border.”

Huebner, 38, returned to western Nebraska five years ago to raise his family and operate a small ag business. He believes his background gives him a direct connection to issues central to the district, including agriculture and border security.

“Border security is national security,” he said, recounting his years of service under Presidents George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump. “We need to codify policies that protect our borders and our citizens. That’s not partisan—it’s common sense.”

The 3rd Congressional District covers most of western and central Nebraska and is among the largest districts geographically in the country, with 80 counties. Huebner said he’s already begun a grassroots campaign, attending events in York and Buffalo counties in the days following his May 30 announcement.

“I’ve got 46 weeks to cover 80 counties before the primary. We’re hitting the road hard. Voters deserve to meet the person asking for their support,” he said.

In addition to agricultural and security issues, Huebner voiced concern about how undocumented immigration may impact future U.S. Census counts and congressional representation for Nebraska.

“If we don’t fix how illegal aliens are counted, we risk losing a House seat. That could mean losing the 3rd District entirely. We have to get ahead of that now,” he said.

Huebner said his campaign will be grounded in bold conservative values, including support for law enforcement, border security, Christian principles, and rural America.

We’re hitting the road hard. OGALLALA, Neb. — The Wild West Soap Box Derby is back in high gear this Saturday, June 7, as racers from across the region compete in the prestigious FirstEnergy All-American Championship Race and the Super Kids Classic at the derby track in Ogallala.

Local Director Dave Barrett joined Sandhills Post this week to preview the big event, which will determine which young drivers advance to the world championships in Akron, Ohio, July 13–19. Ogallala’s race is one of about 100 nationwide where champions automatically qualify for the global showdown.

“This is the one race each year that earns automatic bids to Akron,” said Barrett. “It’s really special — it’s free to attend, family-friendly, and the racing is incredibly competitive.”

The Super Kids Classic kicks off at 1 p.m., followed by stock, super stock, and masters division races starting around 1:45 p.m. Spectators can expect three to four hours of action, including the drivers’ parade and opening ceremonies. The race follows a double-elimination format.

Unique to soap box derby racing, competitors draw from a “wheel bank” to ensure fairness, swapping wheels and lanes with each opponent. “It’s about as even as it gets,” Barrett said. “You can’t win with tricked-out wheels — the racing is decided by skill.”

Last year, Ogallala celebrated a world champion when local racer Ethan Auwerda won the Super Kids title in Akron. Another local, Diego Juarez, finished as runner-up in the Super Stock Rally division. Region 4, which includes Nebraska and surrounding states, remains one of the most competitive in the nation.

Barrett credited the Ogallala Optimist Club and Pinnacle Bank — sponsors since the track opened 19 years ago — as key partners in making the event possible. Eichner’s Sales and Service also donated a $2,000 grill to support the derby’s fundraising efforts.

“Without sponsors and volunteers, we couldn’t put on an event like this,” said Barrett, noting the loss of fireworks sales this year left a funding gap.

Spectators are encouraged to bring the whole family to enjoy racing, food from the Derby Diner, and community fun. The event is free to attend, and raffle tickets are available to support the program.

Keith County Big Give's Caitlin Fuller talks about how local non-profits score with Big Give

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — The crown may be changing heads this week, but Miss Nebraska 2024 Raechel Warren and Miss Nebraska’s Teen 2024 Janae Harris are savoring every final moment of their reign as the next generation of competitors arrive in North Platte.

<a href="https://www.missnebraska.org/miss-nebraska#titleholders">Twelve young women will vie for the title of Miss Nebraska 2025</a>, and another <a href="https://www.missnebraska.org/outstanding-teen#mnotlocals">twelve for Miss Nebraska’s Teen 2025</a>, during a weeklong celebration of talent, service, scholarship, and style. Events begin Wednesday, June 4, with a Red Carpet Welcome Ceremony at Venue 304 and culminate with the final night of competition Saturday, June 7, at North Platte High School.

Warren and Harris joined the North Platte Post to reflect on their journeys, share advice for this year’s candidates, and spotlight a packed week of pageant festivities.

“This time last year, I had no idea how much this role would change my life,” said Warren, who competed in her final year of eligibility in 2024. “My goal was to go in, be 100% Raechel, and give it everything. Winning was just the cherry on top of the most fulfilling year.”

For Harris, her journey began with a bit of pre-pageant coaching at a family gathering. “Derek, you sat me down and gave me interview questions. I was so nervous, but it helped so much,” she laughed. “This has been the most incredible year, and I hope to compete at Miss Nebraska in the future.”

Miss Nebraska Week is more than just a competition. It’s a celebration of tradition and mentorship that sets the program apart. One such tradition: each contestant is hosted by a local family—something unique to Nebraska.

“Our host families make this week unforgettable,” Warren said. “It’s a hallmark of the program and part of what makes North Platte feel like home.”

The Sparkler program, previously known as “Little Sisters,” pairs young girls aged 6–12 with delegates. For Harris, the bond she formed with her sparkler last year—sealed with a friendship necklace—remains one of her favorite memories.

“This year I get to see her again,” Harris said. “Mentorship is what my platform is all about, and this week is a chance to pour into the next generation.”

Warren added, “These little girls come back year after year. Some even grow up to compete. It shows just how lasting the impact is.”

This week offers the public multiple chances to meet the delegates. In addition to Wednesday’s Red Carpet Welcome, preliminary competitions will be held Thursday and Friday at 6:30 p.m. at North Platte High School. Saturday’s final begins at 6:00 p.m., followed by a post-pageant celebration at Venue 304.

Additional events include the Forever Red Celebration on Saturday afternoon, autograph signings, and visits to local businesses throughout the week.

“Our board and volunteers have done a phenomenal job,” Warren said. “The events are bigger, the marketing’s stronger, and the community support continues to grow. We’re grateful for all of it.”

Though neither will compete this week, both reigning titleholders plan to be a constant presence throughout the festivities—encouraging contestants and celebrating the sisterhood.

“This week is so different, not having the pressure of competition,” said Warren, who will perform with her mother Friday night. “My job now is to remind the girls to just enjoy it. They’ve done the work—now it’s time to shine.”

Warren plans to marry in September and continue her full-time career at Scoular, a commodities trading company. She and Harris also plan to expand their platforms into businesses, offering mentorship and outreach beyond the stage.

For Harris, who has aged out of the teen division, her sights are now set on Miss.

“This is a sisterhood that changes lives,” she said. “To everyone competing: soak it all in, make friends, and know that this is just the beginning.”

The public is encouraged to attend and support these ambitious young women. As Warren put it, “This is more than a competition—it’s a launchpad for what’s next.”

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — One of Lincoln County’s most anticipated annual fundraisers is back. The Grape &amp; Sizzle event, organized by the Lincoln County Cattle Women's Association, will take place Friday, June 6, at Venue 304 in downtown North Platte. The evening combines gourmet food, wine tasting, and lively auctions to raise funds for local nonprofits.

Tracy Olson, president of Grape &amp; Sizzle, and board secretary Amanda White joined the Sandhills Post this week to share details about the event, which has supported Lincoln County for over two decades.

“Our slogan is ‘Beef for a Cause,’ and our mission is to promote the beef industry while giving back to local nonprofits,” Olson said.

This year, three nonprofit recipients were selected through a competitive process:

“We’re thrilled to support organizations doing such meaningful work in our community,” White said.

Guests can expect a gourmet lineup featuring steak and feta salad, sweet and spicy meatballs in puff pastry, Parmesan-rimmed sliders, a cheese and olive station, a dessert bar, and an extensive wine selection.

“Our food and wine offerings are always a hit — people look forward to indulging and enjoying the atmosphere,” White added.

The Grape &amp; Sizzle event, organized by the Lincoln County Cattle Women's Association, will take place Friday, June 6, at Venue 304 in downtown North Platte. The evening combines gourmet food, wine tasting, and lively auctions to raise funds for local nonprofits.</p><p>Tracy Olson, president of Grape &amp; Sizzle, and board secretary Amanda White joined the Sandhills Post this week to share details about the event, which has supported Lincoln County for over two decades.</p><p>“Our slogan is ‘Beef for a Cause,’ and our mission is to promote the beef industry while giving back to local nonprofits,” Olson said.</p><p>This year, three nonprofit recipients were selected through a competitive process:</p><ul>
                        <li>The Connection, a shelter in North Platte that supports homeless individuals and families on their path to permanent housing.
</li><li>CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), which aids children in the juvenile court system, particularly those in foster care. Funds will help expand their Kids' Closet, which provides essential items for youth.
</li><li>Lincoln County 4-H Council, which serves children ages 5 to 18. This year’s funds will go toward agricultural literacy displays on corn, beef, pollinators, and pork.
</li>

Tom, a former state senator and past president of the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Association, launched the fundraiser as part of his mid-year convention. OGALLALA, Neb. — The Ogallala City Council met on May 27 to address a variety of topics, from nuisance abatement efforts and utility maintenance to community event funding and public works updates.

City Manager Kevin Wilkins joined Sandhills Post's Derek Beck to recap the meeting, highlighting several key actions and discussions that took place during the evening session.

The meeting began with a light consent agenda, which included approval of claims, a gas sitter’s license for Adrian Urich, and renewal of the master plumber’s license for Dan Heble.

During the public comment portion, Ed McLaughlin addressed the council with concerns about the appearance of properties across Ogallala, particularly emphasizing the issue of non-functioning or unlicensed vehicles. Wilkins said the discussion was respectful and informative.

“We talked about our nuisance abatement process, which we’re currently working on with the West Central Nebraska Development District,” Wilkins said. “The city is divided into 18 zones, and we’re actively assessing one of those areas now.”

Representatives from PeopleService also provided updates, including progress on the city’s meter replacement program and a surge in utility location requests, which have exceeded 500 this month. Wilkins noted that high locate volumes indicate active construction and community improvements.

A revised agreement with the Keith County Chamber of Commerce was also approved. The chamber manages Rendezvous Square, a downtown event space, and requested a reallocation of its $20,000 budget—increasing its management fee from $2,000 to $4,000 and reducing event programming funds to $16,000.

The council also approved a sewer disposal fee amendment, reducing the rate structure to $40 per 500 gallons dumped at the wastewater treatment facility, down from the previous 1,000-gallon threshold.

In another significant item, the council approved a five-year, $275,000 contract with Viking Industrial Painting to maintain the city’s water storage tanks.

“These tanks are critical infrastructure, and routine inspection and maintenance help us avoid major failures,” Wilkins explained.

The final item of the evening involved a $634 settlement to resident Michael Maxey for a curb stop repair dispute. While property owners are typically responsible for utility lines from the curb inward, Wilkins noted that this case involved extenuating circumstances. The council's decision may set a precedent for future utility-related claims.

Looking ahead, Wilkins mentioned that recent rains have led Keith County Commissioners to lift the burn ban, although the fireworks ban remains in place. He cautioned residents to remain vigilant despite the moisture.

“We’ve had just enough rain to make the grass grow—which means it could burn well in July,” Wilkins said.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — The Hall of Fame PRCA Buffalo Bill Rodeo is set to return to North Platte from June 18 through June 21, bringing four nights of high-level rodeo action — and a few key changes fans need to know.

This year, the rodeo will start at 7:30 p.m. each night, a shift from the long-standing 8:00 p.m. tradition. Buffalo Bill Rodeo Committee members Justin Thompson and Levi Fisher told Derek Beck of the North Platte Post that the earlier start is aimed at making the event more convenient and family-friendly.

“Pushing the start time up just a bit helps get folks home earlier and might help us avoid some of that late-night weather,” Thompson said. “We don’t like to talk about rain, but you know it can happen.”

The rodeo, a staple of Nebraskan tradition and part of Nebraskaland Days, is also upping the stakes in 2025. This year, the added purse money has increased from $6,000 to $10,000 per event, a significant jump aimed at attracting top-tier talent.

“That’s one of the biggest changes,” said Fisher. “It helps bring in some of the bigger names and just elevates the overall competition.”

Cowboys and cowgirls participating in the PRCA-sanctioned event are already taking note. While the exact performance schedules for top-ranked athletes aren’t set, fans can expect to see nationally known names like Stetson Wright, Coleman Proctor, and Rocker Steiner throughout the week.

“Every night is going to have someone in the top five or top 10,” Thompson said. “There’s no bad night at this rodeo.”

While Saturday night sold out last year, Fisher encouraged fans to take advantage of Wednesday and Thursday nights, which often feature high-caliber performances as athletes route through multiple national events.

“If you're looking for great competition without the weekend crowds, Wednesday and Thursday are hidden gems,” he said.

For early risers and die-hard rodeo fans, slack events begin at 8 a.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, offering even more opportunities to see top-tier rodeo action.
