The proposed tax request will&nbsp;lower the levy by $0.11.This is possible because the Nebraska State Legislature passed a school funding package that has updated how school funding is allocated for the 2023-2024 school year. Ogallala Public Schools is set to receive $1,371,322 in State Foundation Aid. With this foundation aid, Ogallala Public Schools was able to utilize the aid and reduce the levy by $0.11 and decrease our total tax asking by $304,682.

OGALLALA - The week 3 Sandhills Area Game of the Week features Cozad (1-1)&nbsp; taking on Ogallala (0-2). Ogallala is heading into their week 3 matchup looking for their first win of the season after falling in a close one last week to Broken Bow 28-22. Ogallala who started there season off as a balanced offense, has transitioned to a run heavy offense. Despite having injuries hit the team, upper and underclassmen student-athletes have stepped up. A few names to watch in tonight's football game is seniors Harry Caskey, Caden Rezac, and sophomores Edan Cain and Sawyer Smith.&nbsp;

Cozad comes into the week 3 matchup off a big win over Central City when they defeated the Bison last week 26-22. The Haymakers would score 19 points in the 4th quarter to pull away for the victory. This years Cozad team is a good mixture of upper and under classmen playing on both sides of the ball. Cozad's balanced style offense is led by junior quarterback Noah Shoemaker. Shoemaker alongside seniors Drue White, Tyree Smith, junior Lane Wright, and sophomore Olliver Davis are a few names to watch for tonight.&nbsp;

Sandhills Area Game of the Week: Ogallala Vs Cozad 

Join us at Ash Hollow Historical Park for the 3rd Annual Ash Hollow Rendezvous!

The rendezvous will allow park visitors to absorb themselves in pre-1840 history, unique culture and educate themselves of an era gone by. Rendezvous were historically held in the fall between fur traders and local Native American tribes and were a time to gather, share trade goods such as skins, furs, beads, food items, weapons, and knowledge.

There will be demonstrations of black powder shooting, tomahawk throwing, recurve bow and arrow shooting, open fire cooking, trap setting, canoeing, along with traders’ row where goods can be viewed and purchased. A living history tent, emulating the spirit of American men and women of the era will host historical re-enactors speaking on subjects such as the newest kitchen utensils, fashion, political issues, current events, a card playing table and people that lived in 1876.

Food vendors will be on location for the event. There will be a Farmers’ Market on Friday and Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. – noon.

A rotation of activities will include: History of the Rendezvous, buffalo fleshing, hawk &amp; knife, fire starting, tin smithing, black powder shooting, quilting demonstrations, and a chuck wagon history and demonstration.

3 p.m. – Raffle for black powder gun &amp; handcrafted quilt; archery demonstration and shooting

5:30 p.m. – Early Americana singer: Charity Neal

9 a.m. – Trader’s Row opens; living history demonstrations will run from 9 a.m. – noon.

3rd Annual Ash Hollow Rendezvous begins Friday in Lewellen

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/7ce1593649b94646aec0bda6fb3418d5">man who killed six</a>&nbsp;members of a Nebraska family nearly 50 years ago has died after complaining about chest pain.

<a href="https://apnews.com/60bc5d54c7484ac19a8cc03ab74906e4">Erwin Charles Simants</a>, who was 77, died Thursday at a Lincoln hospital, his attorney, Robert Lindemeier, told the&nbsp;<a href="https://journalstar.com/news/local/crime-courts/erwin-charles-simants-who-killed-6-nebraskans-in-1975-dies/article_4169f51e-4b56-11ee-9071-eb5690a5bf57.html#tracking-source=home-top-story">Lincoln Journal Star.</a>

Simants initially was sentenced to die in the electric chair for shooting Henry and Audrey Kellie, along with their son, David, and three of their grandchildren in 1975. He had been hired to do odd jobs for the family at their home in Sutherland, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) west of North Platte. Two of the victims also were sexually assaulted.

But that sentence was overturned in 1979, when the Nebraska Supreme Court ordered a new trial because the sheriff, a trial witness, played cards with some of the jurors while they were sequestered.

At retrial he was found not responsible by reason of insanity. He was diagnosed as schizophrenic and spent the rest of his life at a state psychiatric hospital.

The second insanity verdict prompted changes to Nebraska’s insanity law. The changes were part of a national movement in the legal world that gained prominence when&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/john-hinckley-jr-freed-9db1af865b01dc956cb33291438392dc">John Hinkley</a>&nbsp;was acquitted by reason of insanity for shooting President Ronald Reagan.

Those changes shifted the burden of proof from the prosecution to the defense and gave judges — not mental health boards — authority to decide when to release patients found not responsible by reason of insanity.

In Simants' last competency evaluation in December, a judge ruled that he was still considered mentally ill and dangerous.

Audrey Brown, the only surviving Kellie sibling who had moved to Colorado just weeks before Simants’ 1975 attack, died in 2018. She had driven to Lincoln for Simants’ annual review hearings each year for more than three decades.

“I think the courts need to recognize, and the public needs to recognize, there was a real family involved in this, and somebody still loves them and cares about them,” she said in 2013.

A grand jury will convene to investigate Simants' death.

Air Quality Index:&nbsp;Moderate to Unhealthy Air Quality Index (AQI)

Potential Air Quality Impacts&nbsp;from Wildfires

Smoke associated with&nbsp;Canadian wildfires&nbsp;may affect the air quality in Nebraska.

An advisory of possible&nbsp;Moderate to Unhealthy&nbsp;(yellow, orange, and red) Air Quality Index (AQI) may occur in western Nebraska, potentially affecting the cities of Alliance, Chadron, Gering, Hyannis, Kimball, Ogallala, Sidney and surrounding areas from Tuesday, Sept. 5, through Wednesday evening, Sept. 6, 2023.&nbsp;

During Moderate AQI (yellow category) conditions, those who are unusually sensitive to particle pollution may experience health effects. When conditions rise to the yellow category, those who are unusually sensitive are advised to consider shortening outdoor activities and reducing the intensity of these activities. Symptoms such as coughing or shortness of breath are signs to take it easier.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups AQI (orange)

During Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups AQI (orange category) conditions, members of sensitive groups may experience health effects. Sensitive groups include people with heart or lung disease, older adults, and children. When conditions rise to the orange category, sensitive groups are advised to reduce prolonged or heavy exertion and avoid intense outdoor activities. Everyone else can remain active and adjust activity duration and intensity as needed.

BRULE, NEB. - The Brule Gun Show is this Saturday and Sunday. The event is taking place at the Brule Activity Center which is located at 8th and Oak Street. Saturdays show will be from 9 am - 5 pm mountain time while Sunday's show is scheduled for 9 am - 3 pm mountain time.

Curtis&nbsp;– Monday, September 11th, 4:30-5:30 pm at Medicine Valley High School.

Trenton –&nbsp;Tuesday, September 19th, 3:30-4:30 pm at Hitchcock County High School Library.

Ogallala&nbsp;– every Thursday weekly, 8:00 am-4:00 pm MT, walk-in’s welcome. Also 4:00-6:00 pm MT by appointment only, at 418 N Spruce (across the street from the Methodist Church).

The real dreamers of North Platte are getting another chance to pitch their idea to a panel of judges and live audience this October, but first they must commit to submitting their idea.

It’s easy to sit back and make a wish that another business, product, or service existed within our community. The do-er’s are those to celebrate. Nebraska inventors created the NYC Subway Car, Baker’s Chocolates, Pivot Walker, Dorothy Lynch, aluminum track hurdles, and so much more.

We can also look to past winners of Big Idea North Platte for inspiration such as Bunkhouse Media, Hide Park Apparel, Fire Door Night Light, Cargo Socks, Liquid Carriage, and Entrepreneurship book, plus others.

This will be the fourth year the North Platte Young Professionals (NPYP) host the “shark-tank” inspired pitch competition, and they have brought back the Youth Category. With outstanding support of the youth in our community, the NPYP Advisory Committee decided to bring back the category. Mid Plains Community College has sponsored college scholarships, that can be used at any MPCC campus, as well as summer courses for the prize awards for those entering under 18. &nbsp;Third Place will win at $1,000 scholarship. Second Place a $1,500 scholarship. First Place will win a $2,500 scholarship.

Eagle Communications, through the Schmidt Foundation has graciously stepped up again this year to donate prize money for the Community Category. Third Place will win $3,000. Second Place will win $7,000. First Place will win $10,000.

This idea pitch competition is seeking application/ideas and the deadline is fast approaching on September 17th.&nbsp; We want to hear your ideas and with the top three ideas winning prize money and support to help bring their product, service, or enhancement to current business to fruition. Support includes but limited to help with legal questions, business development, advertising, focus group, pitch coaching and cash or scholarship awards. &nbsp;

This summer ten community swimming pools received Pool Cool certificates from Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD). The Pool Cool program works with local swimming pools to train pool staff to provide children with education about skin cancer and sun safety during their swim lessons.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Pool Cool program manager, Sarah Minnick, visited area swimming pools in June to increase awareness of sun protection practices with pool staff and pool users. Ten area swimming pools agreed to teach the Pool Cool program. Pools were asked to send pictures of lifeguards teaching the Pool Cool program and then they would qualify for the certificate and a cash incentive.&nbsp;

SWNPHD provided signage for each of the pools that was used to educate swimmers and act as a sun safety reminder. “We also provided the pools with free sunscreen so if someone forgets to apply it before arriving to the pool, they will have some readily available,” Minnick explained. “Using the Pool Cool program that the National Cancer Institute has made available for area pools is a great tool to help educate all swimmers and pool employees on sun safety and preventing skin cancer.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

In July and August Sarah Minnick visited those same pools again to present the pools with their certificate of completion and $250 dollars as a thank you for helping their communities prevent skin cancer. The pools that completed the program were Arapahoe Pool, Beaver City Pool, Benkelman Pool, Culbertson Pool, Curtis Pool, Cambridge Public Pool, Indianola Public Pool, Oxford Pool, Paxton Pool, and Wauneta Pool.&nbsp;

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer found in the United States; it accounts for nearly 1.3 million new cases of cancer each year. SWNPHD wants to remind everyone of the importance of using sunscreen every day, even in winter months, because ultraviolet or UV rays are an invisible radiation that is present all year round.&nbsp;

This years theme is "In the League of Our Own" (Baseball) &amp; Community Pride.  We are so excited to see some of the creative ideas that everyone has for their floats and/or rides!  This years theme was chosen to represent the alliance, camaraderie, fellowship, kinship, and unity that all of our communities have.  Paxton itself has a lot of history, tradition, and so many changes. 

 In the 1870's Paxton was actually called Alkali due to the soil being alkaline.  Now, I can totally get nerdy with this, but I shall digress!  But, the name didn't change until 1885 from Alkali to Paxton.  A Rancher from Omaha named William Paxton had the largest ranching operation in the area, and the town was named after him.  Also, in 1885, bridges were built for the development of young communities to grow on the other side of the river. 

 Again, this area alone (not just Paxton) is unique with a rich history! Which makes all of us "in the league of our own".  First named after the type of soil and then named after a ranching operation, Paxton continues to thrive in change, innovation, growth, and friendship.  Parade Info: -The parade starts at 10am and starts at the Paxton Consolidated Schools. 

 The parade route starts on 3rd street, heads straight East on 3rd and ends at the Paxton Ball Fields. -Registration starts at 9am at the Paxton Consolidated Schools-Categories: YOUTH- 5th graders and under, 6th graders and older (CASH ONLY). OGALLALA, NEB. - Second Chapter Brewing in Ogallala is hosting a Pop-Up Party this Sunday from 12 pm - 6 pm mountain time. The event, which is free to the public and family friend will offer vendors, brew sampling, and a food truck will be in attendance.&nbsp;

The event is a great opportunity for entrepreneurs to get together and support the community. "As entrepreneurs ourselves, we really want to support the local community and help other entrepreneurs to get there works in front of a different audience," said Lisa Kraus. "This will be a lot of fun and their will be something for everyone at the brewery and it's going to be a great day labor day weekend.

This can include shoes, clothes, household items, purses plus so much more. Bigger items like furniture, beds, TVs will not be accepted.
