LINCOLN, Neb. — Sixteen people lost their lives in traffic crashes across Nebraska during the month of March, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation.

The fatalities occurred in 15 separate crashes, with the majority taking place in rural areas. Data shows 12 of the deaths happened outside urban locations, continuing a trend of higher fatality rates on rural roadways.

Of the 13 vehicle occupants killed, four were not wearing seatbelts, six were properly restrained, and seatbelt use was unknown in three cases. Overall in 2026, only 17 of the 46 vehicle occupants killed in crashes had been wearing seatbelts.

Breaking down where the fatal crashes occurred, three deaths happened on interstate highways, nine on other highways, and four on local roads. One crash involved a train.

The March fatalities also included two motorcyclists, one bicyclist, and one farm tractor driver.

Compared to the same month last year, the number of deaths declined slightly. Nebraska recorded 17 traffic fatalities in March 2025.

So far in 2026, there have been 54 traffic deaths statewide, compared to 47 at the same point in 2025. That marks an increase of about 13 percent year over year.

State transportation officials continue to stress the importance of seatbelt use and safe driving habits, particularly on rural roads where most fatal crashes occur.
