Milwaukee, Wis. -- After racing out to an early 2-0 lead in the first 18 minutes, No. 7 Creighton Men's Soccer found itself deadlocked at 2-2 by the 22nd minute. Playing on the round the Bluejay refused to fold, claiming a 3-2 road win on Saturday, September 26.
The win lifted Creighton to 9-0-2 on the season and 2-0-0 in BIG EAST action, while Marquette dropped to 6-3-1 overall and 0-2-0 in conference contests.
Creighton cracked the scoreboard in the 8th minute (7:35) and the 18th minute (17:45) as senior Matthew Reed punched in his eighth goal of the season. Reed finished a scoring chance in front of the box set in motion by freshman Carter Derksen. Just over 10 minutes later sophomore Ange Gbe punished the Golden Eagles for not stopping the ball. Gbe dribbled through the middle of the pitch, firing from 22 yards out for his first career goal.
Marquette wasted little time responding as Tomiwa Adewumi found Antonio Costabile along the right side of the box for a crossing shot that bent into the top right corner to beat Creighton's defense in the 20th minute (19:45). Moments later Joey Buchanan went back to the same spot on a corner sent in by Mateo Stoka in the 22nd minute (21:29).
The match remained deadlocked into halftime, with Creighton using a series of passes inside the eight. Senior Edward Morales sent a pass to junior Brady Bragg. The Omaha native one touched a ball in front of the net for Junior Angel Lopez to finish for his fifth goal of the season.
The chippy BIG EAST battle saw a combined seven cards displayed, including five yellow cards to Creighton as well as one yellow and a straight red to Marquette. The red card was issued at the end of regulation after the Golden Eagles VAR challenge was denied.
Creighton returns home for an intracity rivalry matchup on Tuesday, September 29 at Omaha for a matchup at Caniglia Field. The contest is slated for a 7:00 pm kickoff.
