Eleven people lost their lives in traffic crashes on Nebraska roadways during April, according to new data released by the Nebraska Department of Transportation.

The fatalities occurred in 10 separate crashes across the state. NDOT reported that nine of the 11 deaths happened in rural locations, while no fatalities were recorded on Nebraska interstates during the month. Seven deaths occurred on other highways and four were on local roads.

Among the victims, one was a motorcyclist. Of the 10 vehicle occupants killed, three were not wearing seatbelts, five were confirmed to be using seatbelts and two had unknown seatbelt usage.

So far in 2026, Nebraska has recorded 65 traffic fatalities in 58 fatal crashes. That is down slightly from the same period in 2025, when 68 people had been killed in 64 crashes. The 2026 total is also below the four-year average of 73 fatalities through April.

April’s toll marked a significant decrease from April 2025, when 20 people were killed on Nebraska roads.

NDOT also noted that only 22 of the 56 vehicle occupants killed in crashes during 2026 were confirmed to have been wearing seatbelts.

The Nebraska Department of Transportation updates the state’s traffic fatality count daily through its Highway Safety Section.
