The Nebraska track and field team concluded the first day of competition at the NCAA Outdoor National Championships, highlighted by Dyson Wicker claiming the men’s pole vault title and a total of three podium finishes.
Wicker broke the all-time conditions school record, clearing 5.85m (19-2 ¼) to secure his first national championship in the final field event of the day. The sophomore from Heath, Texas, improved on his fourth-place finish at indoor nationals.
Keyshawn Strachan launched a throw of 80.65m (264-7) in the men’s javelin to earn a silver medal and First-Team All-America honors.
Cade Moran was the first Husker on the podium, claiming a bronze medal in the men’s shot put with a personal best-tying throw of 20.21m (66-3 ¾). The junior from Murrieta, Calif., also claimed bronze at indoor nationals in March.
Hencu Lamberts added a fifth-place finish in the shot put, throwing 19.71m (64-8) in his first NCAA Championship appearance.
James Ledbetter concluded his sophomore season with a 15th-place finish in the men’s 400mH, running 50.16. Ledbetter scaled the school record book this year, running 50.00 at regionals to climb to fifth all-time for the Big Red.
Hannes Fahl ran 1:48.24 in the men’s 800m prelim, earning a 20th-place finish and an All-America honorable mention.
The Huskers are back in action tomorrow with the women’s 4x100m relay at 5:05 p.m. (CT). All events are streamed on ESPN2.
