NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — A 23-year-old North Platte man is facing several charges after allegedly injuring a kitten and later attacking a police officer during an attempted arrest.

Jonathan Faubel was charged last week in Lincoln County Court with intentional cruelty to an animal, assaulting a police officer in the third degree, and resisting arrest.

Police were initially called to Casey’s General Store on Rodeo Road around 10 p.m. on July 2 after a disturbance was reported. According to court documents, an employee told officers that Faubel—identified as a former worker at the store—had returned and threatened a current staff member while holding a kitten that appeared to be bleeding from the neck. Faubel reportedly claimed he had slit the animal’s throat.

The next day, officers were dispatched to an apartment complex, also on Rodeo Road, following reports of a man yelling and acting erratically in the parking lot. Officers found two kittens nearby—one of which had a deep laceration to its neck, estimated to be between 2.5 and 3 inches long.

During the encounter, authorities say Faubel struck an officer with a broomstick, knocking a flashlight out of the officer’s hand. As officers attempted to place him under arrest, he resisted, leading to a physical struggle before he was subdued and taken into custody.

Faubel is being held at the Lincoln County Jail on $25,000 bond, with 10% required for release. He is scheduled to appear in court on July 17.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — The Lincoln County Agricultural Society is renewing its call for community support as it continues efforts to fund and build a long-discussed multi-purpose facility at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds in North Platte.

Kristi Chessmore, a member of the Lincoln County Ag Society Board, said in a recent interview with The North Platte Post that despite rumors to the contrary, the board is committed to seeing the project through.

“Yes, absolutely,” Chessmore said when asked if the project was still active. “We are very dedicated to building a facility where year-round activities can happen—something North Platte doesn’t currently have.”

The proposed facility would include a large indoor arena, flexible classroom and meeting spaces, and banquet seating for up to 500 people. It would be located at the northwest corner of the fairgrounds and would not impact the existing racetrack, a concern that had circulated online. Plans show the pits may be relocated, but the track itself would remain intact.

The estimated cost of the project is around $12 million, and while the fair board has already secured some pledged donations, they are still searching for a major benefactor to help move the project forward.

“We had a $500,000 grant from the Lincoln County Visitors Bureau a few years ago,” Chessmore said. “But we had to turn it back because we didn’t break ground in time. We’re not giving up—but we need more in place before we can reapply.”

Several businesses have already stepped up with pledges, including Farm Credit Services and DaySpring Bank, which have committed $50,000 and $100,000, respectively. All donations are being kept in a separate account, Chessmore emphasized, to address concerns about past fundraising efforts.

“None of that money is mixed with our general fund,” she said. “Every dollar donated specifically for the building is accounted for and protected.”

Still, misconceptions linger. Chessmore noted public confusion around how past donations were used, as well as a general misunderstanding of the fair board's tax funding.

“We are the last line item on your tax statement,” she said. “We get about 0.0067%—we are the lowest-funded entity in the county.”

A new building committee has recently formed and plans to distribute survey table tents across the county in the coming weeks, seeking updated public input and gauging interest.

The need for such a facility, Chessmore argued, is clear. The fairgrounds receive frequent inquiries from groups looking to host large indoor events, especially in winter, but there is currently no suitable venue in North Platte.

“We’re missing out on a lot of income that could be coming into this community year-round,” she said. “We know this would benefit not just the ag community, but local hotels, restaurants, and retail, too.”

While Chessmore acknowledged the disappointment from some over the absence of a carnival this year, she said the fair continues to prioritize youth and 4-H programming, emphasizing its role as a community tradition and agricultural showcase.

“Fair is about the kids,” she said. “And our local youth are some of the most competitive in the state. They work hard—and they deserve a facility that reflects that.”

Lincoln County Fair Board Still Pursuing Multi-Purpose Building at Fairgrounds

SUTHERLAND, Neb. — The countdown is over in Sutherland as the community prepares for its 88th annual 4th of July Celebration — a four-day stretch of small-town pride, rodeo action, and family fun that draws visitors from across Nebraska.

“It’s here — whether we’re ready or not,” joked Janet Mueller of the Sutherland Rodeo Committee in an interview with the North Platte Post’s Derek Beck. “The beginning of July isn’t planning time — it’s go time.”

Festivities officially begin Tuesday, July 1 with the return of the All-Girl Toughest With The Twine roping event at 4 p.m. at the Sutherland Rodeo Grounds. Mueller said the unique event challenges female ropers to head, heel, and breakaway — showcasing serious skills.

“It’s growing every year,” Mueller said. “All you have to do is come and enjoy a fun time with your family and cheer on your favorite cowgirl.”
Admission is free, with concessions and a beer garden available.

From there, the celebration only ramps up, with action-packed days and nights leading up to the 4th.

Sutherland 4th of July Celebration Schedule

This year marks the 88th celebration and approximately the 82nd year of the Rodeo Queen competition, Mueller said. The Junior Queen contest serves as a stepping stone for young girls considering the journey to Miss Rodeo Nebraska, and Sutherland has produced more than its share of past winners.

“We see it as a function for the community,” Mueller said. “It’s not just about the number of years — it’s about bringing people in, showing them what Sutherland has to offer, and keeping our community vibrant.”

OGALLALA, Neb - The Ogallala City Council met Monday night for a wide-ranging agenda that included fireworks regulations, street improvement plans, nuisance abatement updates, and progress on a historic housing redevelopment project.

The meeting’s most anticipated item was the council's decision to lift the city’s temporary fireworks ban, following improved moisture levels in the area. City Manager Kevin Wilkins said the unanimous vote was made in coordination with the fire chief and other Keith County fire officials.

“With the rain we’ve had and what’s in the forecast, we feel confident in allowing the sale and discharge of fireworks this year,” Wilkins said during a radio interview Tuesday.

Fireworks sales and use will be permitted from June 30 through midnight on July 4. Wilkins emphasized public safety, urging residents to avoid lighting fireworks in grassy areas and to refrain from launching fireworks into the city pool—a recurring issue that has damaged equipment in previous years.

In place of the traditional aerial display, Ogallala will host a drone show on Saturday, July 5 at 10 p.m., accompanied by a synchronized soundtrack airing on local radio station Flat Rock 100.7.

Beyond fireworks, the council also discussed the city’s continued collaboration with PeopleService Inc. on water and wastewater management. While no major issues were reported, Wilkins said the city is still waiting on state funds to move forward with significant upgrades to its water treatment facility.

“It would be far more efficient for the state to release the money now so we can fix it properly, instead of putting expensive band-aids on,” Wilkins said.

Mary Wilson with the Keith County Area Development also addressed the council, highlighting regional land banking efforts and small business outreach. Ogallala economic developer Molly Jeffries made nearly 600 business contacts during the last reporting period as part of the city’s retention and expansion strategy.

On the zoning front, the council approved a historic district overlay for three former school properties, including the old high school and middle school. This designation will allow developers to pursue tax incentives and grants as part of a planned redevelopment project that includes 44 units of mixed-income housing. The project is expected to be complete by early 2027.

Additionally, 17 properties were declared nuisances as part of the city’s annual abatement program. These ranged from minor yard cleanups to more serious violations, such as unlicensed vehicles. A total of 135 properties were reviewed.

Council members also approved an engineering agreement for a major street reconstruction project downtown, with estimated costs nearing $600,000. Another proposal under review includes a new EMS ambulance barn to be located on the Ogallala Community Hospital grounds. Preliminary estimates suggest a price tag of around $1.5 million.

The council wrapped the meeting with board updates and Wilkins’ report, which again emphasized responsible fireworks usage during the upcoming holiday week.

“Be courteous, be safe, and shut it down early enough at night,” Wilkins said. “That’ll go a long way in reducing complaints.”

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — Deborah’s Legacy will host its annual Landscape and Garden Tour this Friday and Saturday, June 27–28, offering residents a chance to explore four of North Platte’s most picturesque gardens while supporting a Christ-centered recovery program for women.

The self-guided tour runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. both days. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under. They can be purchased in advance at Deborah’s Legacy, located across from Huebner's Nursery Lawn &amp; Garden, or at Bible Supplies. Limited tickets may also be available the mornings of the event at the downtown pop-up shop in Blackledge Park.

Sam Elliott, one of the event organizers, said during a recent radio interview that the tour not only showcases the creativity and hard work of local gardeners but also brings the community together in a meaningful way.

“Our gardeners have been working very, very hard to create fabulous spaces,” Elliott said. “It’s a joyful event. People leave inspired — sometimes even with a new plant or two.”

This year’s tour also includes a stop at Blackledge Park, where the Deborah’s Legacy pop-up shop will feature items handmade by women in the program, including garden accessories, T-shirts, and coffee. Proceeds from the event benefit Deborah’s Legacy, a nonprofit supporting women recovering from addiction, homelessness, and crisis.

Attendees will also be entered into a prize drawing that includes gift certificates, a large handcrafted planter box, and a ticket to the Sip &amp; Savor event at Dahlia Valley Ranch in Arnold.

“This is just a great way to start your summer morning — grab your friends, take your time through each garden, and maybe go to lunch afterwards,” Elliott said. “Friends don’t let friends go to a garden tour alone.”

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (June 23, 2025) — Nebraska Congressman Adrian Smith said making key tax relief provisions permanent and curbing federal spending are top priorities as lawmakers debate what President Donald Trump has dubbed the “Big Beautiful Bill.”

Speaking to the North Platte Post over the weekend, Smith, who represents Nebraska’s 3rd Congressional District, said the sweeping economic package — formally known as the reconciliation bill — is critical for the country’s financial future.

“If we don't get our work done on this bill, that means a roughly $1,500 tax increase for your average household, and more than $5,000 for your average farming operation,” Smith said, citing figures from the American Farm Bureau.

The reconciliation process, Smith explained, allows Congress to pass budget-related legislation with a simple majority in the Senate — avoiding the usual 60-vote threshold.

“The fact of the matter is, we've gotten the bill through the House already, which I think is good. We need to get our work done,” Smith said. “Some of these tax policies are currently on the books. We want to make that permanent. We certainly don’t want taxes to go up.”

Smith pointed to the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act as a model of pro-growth policy that boosted wages and encouraged investment across agriculture, manufacturing, and other sectors.

“Sometimes you listen to folks in Washington and they demonize prosperity so much, you'd never realize that actually our tax code depends very heavily on prosperity,” he said. “Even with the tax cut, businesses paid more in taxes because they were making more money — and that’s a good thing.”

Smith, who was in North Platte for a series of local meetings and events, emphasized that he considers Nebraska’s agricultural economy to be on “the front lines” of the nation’s economic engine.

He also said trade policy remains a top issue, both for Nebraska producers and the Trump administration.

“Hopefully we’ll have some trade agreements come together very quickly,” Smith said. “And land the plane, so to speak, on trade policy so that we can really be poised well heading into next year.”

The Senate is expected to take up the reconciliation bill in the coming weeks.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (June 16, 2025) — As the 70th annual Miss Rodeo Nebraska pageant unfolds this week in North Platte, three young women from across the state are competing for the prestigious title ahead of the Buffalo Bill Rodeo's opening night Wednesday.

Contestants Brylee Thompson of Hershey, Jessica Lange of Crofton, and Maycie Johnson of Oakdale are showcasing their horsemanship, public speaking, fashion, and rodeo knowledge as they vie for the honor of becoming Miss Rodeo Nebraska 2026.

The competition began with horsemanship at the Wild West Arena and continued with impromptu interviews, a barbecue meet-and-greet, and formal speeches. Contestants will also be evaluated on their social media engagement, a modern element of the pageant that reflects the evolving role of rodeo queens as public ambassadors.

Thompson, who began competing in pageants at age 10, called it a “privilege” to be in the running for Nebraska’s top rodeo title. “You rarely bring your own horse to a rodeo as Miss Rodeo Nebraska,” she said. “It’s important to be able to ride different horses and navigate each arena confidently.”

Lange, representing northeast Nebraska, emphasized how social media has expanded the reach and impact of the role. “I don’t have a large cheering section here, but through social media, so many people back home can follow the pageant and support me,” she said.

Johnson, the third contestant, is newer to pageantry but comes from a background in barrel racing. “It’s about the bond between you and your horse,” she said. “That trust and communication is everything in barrel racing and something I’m excited to bring to this experience.”

This year’s style show, a fan-favorite event where contestants display Western fashion flair, will take place Tuesday night at Venue 304 in downtown North Platte — a new location for the occasion. Doors open at 6 p.m., followed by a fundraising auction at 6:30 and the show at 7.

The pageant will culminate Wednesday with the coronation of Miss Rodeo Nebraska 2026, just before the start of the Buffalo Bill Rodeo at the Wild West Arena.

The Miss Rodeo Nebraska Pageant Association, founded in 1955, celebrates its 70th anniversary this year. The winner will spend the next year promoting the sport of rodeo and the Western lifestyle, traveling across the country and representing Nebraska on a national stage.

OGALLALA, Neb. (June 13, 2025) — Anglers are seeing solid success on Lake McConaughy this week, with a strong night bite for walleye reported near the face of the dam, according to the latest outdoor report from Nebraska Game and Parks.

Walleye are also being caught in 8 to 20 feet of water near Lemoyne, where a good white bass bite is underway. During the day, smallmouth bass of notable size are being reeled in along the rocky points on the lake’s south side and near the dam.

Surface water temperatures near the dam are holding around 66 degrees Fahrenheit.

Lake McConaughy is currently at an elevation of 3,234.8 feet, with a storage level of 74,600 acre-feet — about 55.9% of capacity. Inflows this week are around 850 cubic feet per second, while outflows are at approximately 2,400 cfs. With Father’s Day weekend approaching, both Lake McConaughy and Lake Ogallala remain popular destinations, but campsites — including basic, electric, and primitive sites — are still available. Campfires are currently allowed at both Lake McConaughy and Lake Ogallala, but visitors are urged to follow fire safety protocols. Fires must be contained within designated fire rings no larger than 3 feet, and should never be left unattended. Always fully extinguish fires before leaving. Fireworks remain strictly prohibited at both State Recreation Areas and throughout Keith County.

OGALLALA, Neb. — For the first time ever, the skies over Ogallala will light up tonight with a high-tech twist as the city hosts an Independence Weekend drone show in place of its traditional fireworks display.

The event is set to begin around 10 p.m. Mountain Time at the Western Diamond Sports Complex — the longtime launch site for Ogallala’s July 4th celebrations. Weather permitting, the drone display will fill the night sky with colorful formations choreographed to a music soundtrack broadcast on Flatrock 100.7 FM.

The show is produced by Fantasy Drone Shows, a Nebraska-based company from Norfolk that has gained national attention for its dynamic aerial performances. Just last night, the company put on shows in Provo, Utah; St. Louis, Missouri; and Basalt, Colorado as part of Fourth of July festivities. Fantasy Drone Shows also wowed thousands at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln last year with a large-scale drone presentation.

City officials say they are excited to bring this new form of celebration to Ogallala residents and visitors, marking a move toward a more environmentally friendly and pet-safe alternative to fireworks, especially during what has been a dry summer thus far in Keith County.

Spectators, including those camping at Lake McConaughy, are encouraged to arrive early, bring lawn chairs or blankets, and tune in to the radio to enjoy the full experience.

LINCOLN, NE&nbsp;–&nbsp;Governor Jim Pillen has issued a proclamation marking Independence Day, in which he asked Nebraskans to take due notice of the federal holiday, display their American flags and reflect on the profound words of the Founding Fathers who declared:&nbsp; “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Gov. Pillen added, “By declaring our independence 249 years ago, the United States became the world’s beacon of liberty. Today, we proudly celebrate freedom, and American greatness, with family friends and of course, fireworks. Happy 4th of July!”

Next year, America will celebrate its 250th birthday, the Semiquincentennial.

Kearney, Neb. – Nebraska Kearney head football coach Ryan Held announced updates to his 2025 coaching staff today.

Earning promotions are Tim Schaffner (to head assistant coach), Tyler Harris (to offensive coordinator) and Nate Wills (from graduate assistant to full-time status) and joining the Lopers are Colten Gaines (graduate assistant) and Courtney Ledyard (part-time assistant).Schaffner is the Lopers defensive coordinator and secondary coach. His defense has ranked among the MIAA's best each of the past two years with end Quillan Felton earning 2024 All-American honors. The former Butler (Kan.) C.C. d-coordinator and head coach replaces Colby Ellis in the HAC position. Ellis left the Lopers in the spring for a position at his alma mater, Oklahoma State.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"Coach Shaffener is a great coach, and this new title will help me as a head coach in many ways continue to grow our program to new heights," said Held.Harris came to UNK last season after a successful tenure coaching receivers at his alma mater, Emporia State. He also leads the Loper receivers and saw his group have 122 catches for 1,496 yards and nine touchdowns in 2024. In 2025, he'll have room full of newcomers and led by veterans Tyler Perry (Trenton, Fla.), Zane Schawang (Waverly) and Tavis Maloy (Douglasville, Ga.). "Tyler is an up-and-coming rising star in the profession, and I felt he could to this role and help grow our offense to be much improved in 2025 and beyond," said Held.&nbsp;

Willis has spent the past two years as one of UNK's graduate assistants and leading the corner backs. He'll continue to coach a position group that had five interceptions, 10 pass breakups and 117 tackles last fall to help the Lopers rank third in the MIAA in scoring defense. In 2023, the former Kentucky Wildcat saw Armani Webster earn All-MIAA honors with Kendall Brewer being one of the MIAA's best in 2024. "Coach Willis is another rising star in the profession, and I felt we needed him to be full-time and help grow and mentor the defensive back room," said Held.

Next, Gaines comes to UNK from FCS-member Tennessee-Chattanooga where he worked in video operations and recruiting the past two seasons. At Knoxville Catholic High School, he was a quarterback for the Fighting Irish and led the team to the 2022 state Division II-AA semifinals. He'll work with the Loper tight ends; Riley Myers (running back) returns as UNK's other GA. Finally, Ledyard will be an assistant defensive line coach working under Jake Mandelko. The Cleveland, Ohio, native was a defensive lineman and both Highland (Kan.) C.C. and Division II Southwestern Oklahoma State where he played for current Loper linebackers coach Ruzell McCoy. He totaled 58 tackles (12.5 TFL's) over 21 games for the Bulldogs.

UNK will have two other part-time assistant coaches in Reagan Jones (quarterbacks) and Corey Hoelck (offensive line). Jones moved from player to coach this past winter with Hoelck, a former Loper All-American and professional player, once again a member of the staff. They work under Held (QB's &amp; TE's) and Nate Baker (offensive line).The Lopers report to fall camp on Aug. 1 with the 2025 season opener set for Aug. 28 (Thurs.) at Wayne State. It'll be the first regular season meeting with the Wildcats since 2011; the two held a spring scrimmage in 2022.&nbsp;

UNK Football: Staff Promotions & Additions Announced

Nebraska men's golf has added NCAA Division II transfer Bryson Oots to its 2025-26 roster, Head Coach Judd Cornell announced on Monday, July 1.

Oots, a two-time PING All-Midwest Region selection at William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo., produced a team-best 72.17 stroke average over 34 rounds for the Cardinals last season. He also captured four individual tournament titles in 2024-25 on his way to a second consecutive trip to the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional.

Over his three seasons at William Jewell, Oots posted a 73.22 stroke average over 86 rounds while winning six individual tournament titles. He fired career-best rounds of 66 on two occasions.

"Bryson has had an outstanding career at William Jewell and has earned the right to play at the Division I level," Cornell said. "He will be a great fit for our competitiveness and will give us a great shot in the arm. I'm extremely happy for him and excited that he's going to be a Husker."

A two-time first-team All-Great Lakes Valley Conference performer, Oots was the GLVC Player of the Year in 2024-25. He was also an Academic All-GLVC selection last season. Oots was the Missouri Class 5 state champion as a senior at Staley High School in 2021-22. A two-time all-state selection, Oots was also the Kenneth Smith Award winner, which is presented annually to the best boys high school golfer in the Kansas City area.

Huskers add Bryson Oots for 2025-26

In conjunction with the AVCA and FOX, the Nebraska volleyball program announced the start times and TV information for three more regular-season matches on Monday.&nbsp;

The Huskers will open the regular season in the AVCA First Serve at Pinnacle Bank Arena against Pittsburgh on Friday, Aug. 22 at 6 p.m. (CT) on FOX. Nebraska will also face Stanford in the AVCA First Serve on Sunday, Aug. 24 at 2:30 p.m. on ESPN. Limited tickets for all four days of the event are still available for purchase through Ticketmaster.

In addition to the release of the AVCA First Serve schedule, FOX also announced that Nebraska's match at defending national champion Penn State on Oct. 3 will air on FOX at 7 p.m. (CT).&nbsp;

The Big Red now has five nationally televised matches on the schedule. NU plays Kentucky at the Broadway Block Party in Nashville, Tenn. on Sunday, Aug. 31 at 11 a.m. (CT) on ABC. The Huskers will battle Minnesota on the road on Saturday, Nov. 8 on NBC.&nbsp;

The composite Big Ten volleyball television schedule will be announced in conjunction with Big Ten Volleyball Media Days July 28-29.&nbsp;

Volleyball selected for three more National TV Broadcasts

Former Nebraska All-American Brice Matthews was selected by Major League Baseball for the 2025 All-Star Futures Game.

Matthews will join a group of 25 prospects on the American League roster that will go against 25 prospects on the National League roster on July 12 at Atlanta’s Truist Park. The game will be televised nationally on the MLB Network at 3 p.m. CT.

A first-round pick with the No. 28 overall selection in 2023, Matthews is slashing .285/.403/.492 with 11 doubles, five triples, 10 home runs, 39 RBI and 23 stolen bases at Triple-A Sugar Land in the Houston Astros organization. He is currently tied for second in the Pacific Coast League in triples, third in stolen bases, tied for fifth in walks and 10th in OBP among qualified batters.

The Nebraska volleyball program has announced the details for its 2025 Fan Day, Red-White Scrimmage and Alumni Match.

Nebraska's Volleyball Fan Day will take place on Saturday, Aug. 9 from 9 to 11 a.m. This year's Volleyball Fan Day will be limited to 2,000 fans in order to get all fans through the autograph line. The Nebraska Athletic Department will offer 2,000 free tickets that can be claimed at Huskers.com/Tickets on Monday, July 28 at 10 a.m. Fan Day tickets will be non-transferable.&nbsp;

The Red-White Scrimmage will begin at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 9 with doors opening at 1 p.m. A tiered on-sale through the Huskers Athletic Fund Ranking System begins on Monday, July 7 at 9 a.m., general public at 3:30 p.m.&nbsp;

Nebraska's inaugural Alumni Match will begin at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16 with doors opening at 4:30 p.m. A tiered on-sale through the Huskers Athletic Fund Ranking System begins on Thursday, July 10 at 9 a.m., general public at 3:30 p.m.&nbsp;

TV information for the two preseason scrimmages, as well as which alumni will be participating in the Aug. 16 scrimmage, will be announced at a later date.&nbsp;

For Fan Day, all tickets will be mobile and must be scanned for admission. A maximum quantity of four tickets can be claimed per account. Fans will use only the North concourse doors to enter the building, and the doors will open at 9 a.m. Free parking will be available in Lots 58 and 60. All fans will be asked to exit the Devaney Center and clear their vehicles from the parking lots in between Fan Day and the Red-White Scrimmage.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Autograph tables will be set up on the concourse of the Devaney Center, and a single autograph line will extend around the concourse of the building. One item per person may be signed. Posters for the season will be available as well. In an effort to get all fans through the line, no pictures will be permitted with the coaches and players. Concessions will be open for fans to purchase drinks or candy, and the Huskers Store on the concourse will be open as well.

Volleyball announces details for Fan Day, Preseason Scrimmages

NORTH PLATTE – Lane Foote, a sophomore, and Phoenix Brown, a freshman at North Platte High School have earned positions on the Nebraska National High School rodeo team and will be traveling with fellow teammates to Rock Springs, Wyoming July 13–19 to compete at the 77th annual National High School Finals Rodeo (NHSFR). Lane will compete in Reined Cow Horse and Phoenix in the Pole Bending competition.

Featuring more than 1,800 contestants from 44 states, five Canadian Provinces, Australia, Mexico, New Zealand, and Guatemala, the NHSFR is the world’s largest rodeo. In addition to competing for more than $150,000 in prizes and over $200,000 in added money, NHSFR contestants will also be competing for more than $375,000 in college scholarships and the chance to be named an NHSFR World Champion. To earn this title, contestants must finish in the top 20 — based on their combined times/scores in the first two rounds — to advance to Saturday evening’s final round. World champions will then be determined based on their three-round combined times/scores.

Again, this year, the Saturday championship performance will be televised nationally as a part of the Cinch High School Rodeo Tour telecast series. Local Student Qualify to compete at world's largest rodeo

The Nebraska men’s basketball team will face New Mexico in the opening round of the 2025 Hall of Fame Classic, as the NABC announced the tournament pairings on Thursday.&nbsp;

The Huskers, coming off a 21-14 season and a championship in the College Basketball Crown, will face a New Mexico team that went 27-8 and reached the second round of the 2025 NCAA Tournament. Head Coach Eric Olen is in his first season after leading UC San Diego to the 2025 NCAA Tournament

This is only the second time that Nebraska and New Mexico have squared off on the hardwood and the first since the 2009 NIT, an 83-71 New Mexico win in in Albuquerque.

Nebraska returns five letterwinners from a team that went 21-14 in 2024-25. The group includes returning starters Berke Büyüktuncel and Sam Hoiberg, along with senior guard Connor Essegian, who averaged 10.7 ppg off the bench last season.&nbsp; The Huskers also regain the services of two other significant contributors to the 2024 NCAA Tournament team in All-Big Ten forward senior Rienk Mast, who averaged 12.3 points and led NU in both rebounding (7.5 rpg) and assists (3.0 apg) and Jamarques Lawrence, who played in all 34 games at NU in 2023-24 and averaged 6.9 points and 2.5 assists per game before playing at Rhode Island last season.

Lawrence (9.9 ppg at Rhode Island) is part of a six-member transfer class which includes Kendall Blue (12.3 pp, 4.4 rpg at St. Thomas), Will Cooper (5.3 ppg at Air Force) Jared Garcia (9.6 ppg, 4.2 rpg at Tulsa), Ugnius Jarusevicius (16.2 ppg, 7.3 rpg at Central Michigan) and Pryce Sandfort (8.8 ppg at Iowa). Nebraska also adds a pair of freshmen who are among the nation’s top 125 recruits in Leo Curtis (CATS Academy) and Quentin Rhymes (Hillcrest Prep).

Huskers to face Lobos in Hall of Fame Classic

Nebraska swimmers Gena Jorgenson and Beatrix Tanko will represent the Huskers and their home countries at the 2025 FISU World University Games in Berlin, Germany (July 16-27).

Jorgenson, a senior-to-be from Aberdeen, S.D., earned an invitation to represent the United States after her fifth-place finish in the 1,500-meter freestyle (16:19.28) at the Toyota USA Championships in Indianapolis. A two-time All-American in the 1,650-yard free for the Huskers at the NCAA Championships (2024, 2025), Jorgenson added a sixth-place finish in the 800-meter free (8:33.79) and a seventh-place finish in the 400-meter free (4:11.96) at the USA Championships. All three swims set school records and lifetime bests for Jorgenson. She added a fourth school record by taking 21st in the 200-meter backstroke (2:12.79) at nationals.

Tanko, a junior-to-be for the Big Red from Budapest, Hungary, earned a roster spot for the Hungarian team at the World University Games after winning gold in the 50-meter butterfly (27:04), while adding silvers in the 50-meter freestyle (25.58) and the 100 butterfly (1:00.67) at the Hungarian National Championships in mid-April.

"We are proud to have two Huskers qualify for the World University Games," Nebraska Head Coach Pablo Morales said. "It is always our goal to have our student-athletes represent Nebraska and their national teams at the highest levels. Gena and Beatrix have worked hard for this honor and have been preparing well for the Games. We are definitely looking forward to watching them compete at a global championship."

The swimming competition at the World University Games in Berlin is set to begin July 17 and continue through July 23.
