United States Attorney Lesley A. Woods announced that Mark Cooper, 73, of North Platte, Nebraska, was sentenced on September 11, 2025, in federal court in Lincoln, Nebraska, for violating the Lacey Act. United States District Judge Susan M. Bazis sentenced Cooper to two years’ probation, a $5,000 fine, and $15,000 restitution. In addition to the sentence imposed, Cooper abandoned a 5 X 5 mule deer taxidermy mount originating from the illegal 2019 mule deer hunt associated with the conviction, three additional mule deer taxidermy mounts and antler sets, and several white-tailed deer antlers.&nbsp; Judge Bazis also ordered that Cooper shall not hunt, fish, trap, guide, outfit, or otherwise associate or be in the field with anyone engaged in those activities for a period of two years.

Enacted 125 years ago, the Lacey Act protects the nation’s wildlife resources by prohibiting wildlife violations that cross state or international borders. A joint investigation conducted by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, Office of Law Enforcement and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, Law Enforcement Division determined that Dustin Noble operated a big game guiding and outfitting business from his North Platte residence and provided illegal hunting and guiding services to paying clients, family, and other associates, many from outside the state of Nebraska, between 2015 and 2021. Noble also operated a commercial taxidermy business providing services of converting hides, skins, antlers, and other trophy parts of wildlife into taxidermy mounts. Some of Noble’s taxidermy clients included hunters unlawfully guided by Noble.&nbsp; During those hunts Noble’s friends, associates and clients agreed with Noble to violate Nebraska hunting laws to take wildlife including mule deer and wild turkeys.

The investigation determined that on numerous occasions Cooper, a close associate of Noble, hunted with and on various occasions accompanied Noble while providing guiding services to hunting clients, and assisted Noble transporting raw hides for the Noble Outdoors taxidermy business. On October 31, 2019, Cooper illegally killed an approximately 172-inch 5 X 5 mule deer during the archery deer season in Lincoln County, Nebraska, while accompanied by Noble and two Noble Outdoors clients.&nbsp; Cooper killed the mule deer from a seated position within Noble’s pickup while parked on a public roadway with a center-fire rifle.&nbsp;&nbsp;Under Nebraska state law, hunters are prohibited from possessing firearms or using firearms to hunt deer during the archery season and from shooting from or over a roadway.&nbsp; On November 7, 2019, Cooper delivered a shipment of raw wildlife skins on behalf of Noble Outdoors to a commercial carrier.&nbsp; Cooper delivered the shipment containing numerous wildlife skins knowing the shipment was destined for a fur dressing company in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, and knowing it contained illegally taken wildlife including at least Cooper’s 172-inch mule deer and another trophy-sized mule deer Cooper knew was&nbsp;taken illegally by Noble on October 28, 2019.

The investigation substantiated 114 unlawful hunts conducted and provided by Noble during the course of the conspiracy. Noble’s unlawful activities primarily targeted trophy-sized mule deer, including early season mule deer in velvet antlers. As revealed by extensive evidence obtained during this investigation, Noble’s illegal hunts included the taking of more than 12 species of wildlife, including most notably: 61 mule deer, 33 wild turkeys, 4 pronghorn, 3 white-tailed deer, an American alligator, a timber rattlesnake, and approximately 12 upland game birds, migratory non-game birds, game fish, and furbearing or non-game animals.

This sentencing completes the final prosecution of numerous defendants related to violations committed by Dustin Noble and Noble Outdoors associates and clients between 2015 and 2021. Twenty defendants have been collectively sentenced to 22 months’ imprisonment, 15 years’ probation, 32 years’ hunt/fish/trap restrictions, and ordered to pay more than $275,000 in fines and restitution for state and federal convictions related to this case. The investigation included the seizure and subsequent forfeiture or abandonment of more than 50 trophy wildlife antlers or taxidermy mounts from 27 Noble Outdoors clients or associates.

The operation was a joint investigation conducted by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, Office of Law Enforcement, and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, Law Enforcement Division.

Noble Outdoors Associate Sentenced for Lacey Act Violation for 2019 Mule Deer Hunt

United States Attorney Lesley A. Woods announced that Michael W. Stroble, 32, of North Platte, Nebraska, was sentenced on September 11, 2025, in federal court in Lincoln for one count of conspiracy to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine actual. United States District Judge Susan M. Bazis sentenced Stroble to 138 months’ imprisonment. There is no parole in the federal system. After Stroble’s release from prison, he will begin a 5-year term of supervised release.

Between July 2022 and February 2023, Joey Romero, Jamie Hopkins, Michael Stroble, Luke Schwartz, and others conspired to sell methamphetamine in and around North Platte.&nbsp; The group was responsible for the distribution of pounds of methamphetamine and was subject to multiple controlled buys, search warrants, and arrests.&nbsp;

By January 2023, Stroble and Hopkins were dating, living together, and selling methamphetamine together.&nbsp; On January 17, 2023, a controlled buy of 48 grams of methamphetamine from Schwartz and Stroble occurred less than half a mile from Hopkin’s home.&nbsp; On January 30, 2023, another controlled buy of 36 grams of methamphetamine from Hopkins and Stroble occurred at Hopkins’s home.&nbsp;

A search warrant was served on Hopkins’s residence in North Platte on February 7, 2023.&nbsp; During the search, law enforcement found multiple baggies of methamphetamine to include on a nightstand, a bed, Hopkins’s purse, on the floor, and in the toilet.&nbsp; Law enforcement also found two bongs, 29 pills, owe notes, three scales, spoons with residue, 224 rounds of 9mm ammunition, a box of Winchester .380 ammunition with 23 rounds in it, and empty baggies in the house.&nbsp;

Stroble’s co-defendants were sentenced in 2024. Schwartz was sentenced on September 5, 2024, to 120 months’ imprisonment; Hopkins was sentenced on October 17, 2024, to 120 months’ imprisonment; and Romero was sentenced on December 12, 2024, to 120 months’ imprisonment.

This case was investigated by the CODE Task Force which is made up of law enforcement agencies throughout a 22-county area in west-central/southwest Nebraska and includes the North Platte Police Department, Lexington Police Department, Dawson County Sheriff’s Office, Ogallala Police Department, Nebraska State Patrol, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Homeland Security Investigations.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — Fight fans in North Platte are in for an exciting night as Midwest Championship Fighting (MCF) 29 at the D&amp;N Event Center on Saturday, November 8, 2025, with a card full of local and regional talent and new updates to the evening.&nbsp;

Headlining the evening will be the Nebraska Pro Welterweight Championship, as Austin Jones faces Ryan Leininger in what promises to be a thrilling showdown. Also featured is the North Platte Street Fighter Championship, with Don Bristol taking on Matt Seamann.

Beyond the action inside the cage, MCF is introducing several fan-focused updates to enhance the event experience:

“It’s great to spend time with my fellow veterans in a fun, happy setting rather than at a funeral or on the street,” said Daren Rowlette, USMC.

“The beer garden idea has been in the hopper for years. It’ll be a great addition!” said Heather Slaght, MCF Operations Manager.
“We hope the city council sees the value and security these changes provide,” added MCF President Russ Jones.

Midwest Championship Fighting Announces Big Changes for Nov. 8 Event at D&N Event Center

SEPTEMBER 16, 2025 (ALLIANCE, NEB.) — Investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol believe that the deceased person found last week in rural Box Butte County is Ebram Sifuentes, 32. An autopsy was conducted on Monday, but additional testing is being done to provide 100% confirmation.

Sifuentes had been reported missing and was the subject of a missing person investigation. He was reportedly last seen on August 27. Investigators believe Sifuentes was the victim of a homicide.

Last week, NSP arrested Tamara Bingham, 26, of Alliance, for first degree murder. Investigators also arrested Matthew Landreth, 36, of Alliance, as an accessory to a felony.

This is an active investigation and remains ongoing. NSP has been assisted by the Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office, Alliance Police Department, Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office, WING Task Force, the Sheridan and Box Butte County Attorneys, and the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office.

On Sunday, September 14, 2025, at 6:51 p.m., Lincoln County deputies were dispatched to Highway 30 in Brady for a report of an injury accident.

According to investigators, the driver of a passenger car was transported to Great Plains Health by the Brady Fire Department with minor injuries. During the incident, Brady Johnson of Brady was struck in the lower leg by the vehicle as it rolled while he was washing his windshield. Johnson was not seriously injured, though he later reported pain once the adrenaline had worn off. His truck and a nearby streetlight pole were also damaged in the crash.

September is National Preparedness Month and Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) reminds residents to use safe, approved methods when preserving food. Proper food preservation is an excellent way to build emergency food supplies, since preserved food lasts longer and helps reduce waste. Safe methods protect against foodborne illnesses that can result from improperly preserved food.

“Food preservation is more than just a way to save your garden produce,” said Kay Schmidt, Emergency Response Coordinator at SWNPHD. “When done safely, canning and freezing are practical tools for emergency preparedness.”

Several preservation methods can be used to build a safe and reliable food supply, including canning, freezing, drying, curing, smoking, pickling, and fermenting. Of these, canning and freezing are the most common.

Done correctly, canning destroys enzymes and removes oxygen, which prevents the growth of bacteria, mold, and yeast.

• Low-acid foods (most vegetables, meats, fish, seafood, milk, and some fruits) must be pressure-canned for safety.

• High-acid foods (pickles, salsa, jams, jellies, tomatoes, and some fruits) can be preserved with a water bath canner. Beginners are encouraged to start here before moving on to pressure canning.

Freezing is a quick and simple way to preserve the flavor and nutrients of fresh foods. It is especially useful for fruits, vegetables, and meats. To maintain food quality and safety:

• Use freezer-safe packaging (moisture- and vapor-resistant containers or bags).

• Remove excess air from bags or containers before sealing to reduce freezer burn.

• Blanch most vegetables before freezing to stop enzyme activity and preserve color, flavor, and texture.

• Keep the freezer at 0°F or lower for best quality.

• Label and date all items. Most frozen foods maintain quality for 8–12 months if stored properly.

• Avoid overloading the freezer; allow air to circulate for consistent freezing.

Proper storage is just as important as safe preservation. Keep these tips in mind:

• Clearly label and date each jar or package.

• Store canned goods in a clean, cool, dark, and dry place between 50–70°F.

• Do not stack jars more than two high to avoid damaging seals.

• Store water in food-grade containers that have been cleaned and sanitized and replace stored water every six months.

Emergency Preparedness and Food Preservation: Fall Canning and Freezing

Gift of Hope Cancer Foundation to host 22nd annual fundraiser Sept. 16

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — A steak dinner, auctions, and live music will all be part of the 22nd annual Gift of Hope Cancer Foundation fundraiser Tuesday, Sept. 16, at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds.

The evening begins with a social hour at 5 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 p.m. Guests will enjoy a New York strip steak with baked potato, salad, dessert bar, and two complimentary drinks. Entertainment will be provided by the Flat Rock Irregulars, with a silent auction running from 5 to 7 p.m. and a live auction to follow.

Organizers Janet Cox and Kathy Hahn said the fundraiser plays a vital role in helping local cancer patients. The Gift of Hope provides financial assistance to families across western Nebraska — stretching as far as Lexington to the east, the Wyoming border to the west, and into South Dakota and Kansas. Support can include help with gas, utilities, and rent.

“All of our funding comes from donations and events like this banquet,” Hahn said. “Your donation means hope, relief, and strength for someone facing the fight of their life. No one should battle cancer alone.”

The foundation assists as many as 80 people each year, and every dollar raised stays in the region. Cox called the banquet “a really, really fun evening” and “a rewarding evening because we feel like we can help a lot of people.” She added that the community has been supportive across generations throughout the fundraiser’s 22-year history.

Organizers say the night promises not only good food and community spirit but also big-ticket auction items, including Husker volleyball tickets and Husker football tickets — with one package offering 50-yard line seats in the clubhouse.

🎙️Serving Hope: Inside the Gift of Hope’s 22nd Annual Fundraiser

Nearly a quarter century has passed since the attacks of September 11th, 2001. That day’s tragic events, the heroic acts of so many Americans, and the extraordinary shows of patriotism and national unity which followed are forever etched in our national memory. We will always remember the courage and sacrifice of those who passed and those whose lives were forever changed 24 years ago.

Just as the anniversary of 9/11 was reminding Americans to commemorate the endurance and aspirations which bring us together, sadly, our country was shocked by the assassination of Charlie Kirk. Kirk was a patriot, husband, and father who lived his conservative values by championing free speech for all. Regardless of viewpoint, political violence is never acceptable. I am glad law enforcement quickly identified and apprehended the suspect and is preparing to obtain justice for Kirk’s murder.&nbsp;

The future of our shared values, protection of civil society, and guarantee of the rights and freedoms given by God and recognized by our Declaration of Independence and Constitution are not passively attained. While the sacrifice of countless Americans who have answered the call of duty demonstrate the cost of freedom, the task of promoting the safety of every American falls on each generation. Unlike the past administration, President Trump has made national security and law enforcement efforts top priorities. We recognized our nation’s security need when we enacted $175 billion in border enforcement funding in July alongside our working families tax cut, and we recognized it again this week when House Republicans advanced legislation to provide the administration with the resources needed to meet this mission through the passage of the Fiscal Year 2026 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

The many threats to peace around the globe demand sustained attention to national security. Several of our allies face the reality of war every day while our enemies in Tehran, Beijing, Moscow, and Pyongyang conspire against us. Threats multiply and evolve constantly, whether on the battlefield or in cyberspace. The robust funding in the NDAA allows our military to stand ready with effective deterrence against any and all threats. In the words of Ronald Reagan, “War will not come again...if we will speak honestly of the dangers that confront us and remain strong enough to meet those dangers.”

Recent events have shown both the importance of and fragility of our constitutional rights. While the First Amendment is foundational to the fabric of our communities and public discourse, freedom of speech and other basic human rights remain under threat by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and other nations around the world. Because of this, I supported measures in the NDAA to counter China’s malign influence. I am also a cosponsor of the Protect America’s Innovation and Economic Security from CCP Act. This bill would reestablish the initiative to curb theft of American intellectual property and spying on our academic institutions perpetrated by the CCP.

Our adversaries profit from dividing us, and political polarization only makes it more difficult to protect our country from enemies, both foreign and domestic. As we remember the victims of terrorism perpetrated by these enemies, as well as honor the legacies of those who risked everything to protect our rights and liberties, let us not forget strength ultimately comes from unity.

The Hot Sheets: September 15, 2025

SUTHERLAND, Neb. — Fall is officially in the air, and Sutherland is ready to celebrate with one of its most anticipated events of the season! The 5th Annual Sutherland Makers Market Craft and Vendor Fair returns on Saturday, September 27, bringing a full day of shopping, family fun, and community excitement to downtown Sutherland.

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Walnut Street will be closed to traffic and transformed into a bustling festival featuring nearly 70 vendor booths. Visitors can browse handcrafted goods, boutique items, homemade treats, refurbished finds, baked goods, and other unique products from vendors across Nebraska and neighboring states. Late entries are still being accepted, though space is limited.

Families are in for a treat with the KidZone in front of the Maxine White Public Library. Kids can enjoy bounce houses, games, and interactive art activities hosted by local businesses and organizations. Proceeds from the KidZone will benefit Christian’s Cause, an initiative dedicated to promoting life jacket safety for children.

Hungry shoppers can refuel at the event’s Food Court, where a variety of food trucks will serve everything from street tacos to sweet treats. Plus, the vendor raffle is back with prizes generously donated by the makers themselves. Stop by the Chamber booth to enter and see what treasures you could take home.

The highlight of the day? The Grand Prize Raffle, where one lucky winner will take home a brand-new 2023 John Deere Gator, courtesy of the Sutherland Chamber of Commerce. The Hot Sheets: September 13, 2025

SEPTEMBER 12, 2025 (ALLIANCE, NEB.)  — Investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested multiple people in connection with a suspected homicide in western Nebraska.  

Thursday, investigators located human remains in rural Box Butte County. Investigators are working to positively identify the person. The person is believed to be the victim of a homicide. 

Investigators have arrested Tamara Bingham, 26, of Alliance, for first degree murder. Investigators have also arrested Matthew Landreth, 36, as an accessory to a felony. This is an active investigation and remains ongoing. 

NSP has been assisted by the Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office, Alliance Police Department, Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office, WING Task Force, the Sheridan and Box Butte County Attorneys, and the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office.  

NSP continues investigating a missing person case involving Ebram Anthony Sifuentes, 32, who is missing from Alliance. He had reportedly last been seen on August 27.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — Standing on the corner of D and Dewey streets Friday morning, Brian Harris waved American flags and displayed signs in memory of Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated Thursday.

“I just felt compelled to do something for the people,” Harris said. “I know some people are afraid to actually put their face in public, and I just felt the need that I had to do this.”

Harris described feeling “shock, devastated, angry, sad” when he first heard the news. He said Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, was more than a political figure — he was a husband, father and advocate for free speech.

“He was the biggest advocate for our young folks,” Harris said. “Our kids are being indoctrinated into this brainwashing at the colleges and being educated in a way that is not good with God or good with people.”

Harris said he has followed Kirk since he launched Turning Point at age 18. He pointed to former President Donald Trump’s praise of Kirk and said even some who disagreed with him respected him as a person.

“Even had a John McClever that didn’t like what Charlie Kirk said, but he still understood that he was a man, he is a person, and he was sorry that he got killed,” Harris said.

As drivers passed, several honked their horns in support. Harris said he hopes the display reminds people that the issue goes beyond politics.

“This is a human issue where we should all believe that no life should be taken,” Harris said.

LINCOLN, Nebraska&nbsp;– During Husker Harvest Days Sept. 10, Nebraska’s Natural Resources Districts (NRDs) recognized three individuals, who will be inducted into the NRD Hall of Fame later this month.

“Nebraska’s Natural Resources Districts involve many dedicated individuals working to protect our natural resources,” said Martin Graff, president of the Nebraska Association of Resources Districts (NARD). “We’re proud to recognize these outstanding individuals for the significant improvements they’ve made to our natural resources, and the NRD Hall of Fame is one small way to thank them.”

Annually, Nebraska’s NRDs nominate and vote for individuals who have made significant contributions to improving the state’s natural resources. Hall of Fame categories include an NRD Director, NRD Employee and NRD Supporter. The NRD Supporter includes an individual outside the NRD system who has shown tremendous care and leadership in Nebraska’s ongoing conservation efforts.

<a>James Meismer served 34 years on the Twin Platte NRD Board. His impact extends statewide through his 28 years on the Nebraska Association of Resources Districts Board, where he chaired the Legislative Committee.</a>

A strong advocate for sound water policy, Meismer served on the Water Policy Task Force, whose work helped establish integrated management of groundwater and surface water in Nebraska. He also contributed to conservation at the federal level as an advisor to the Platte River Whooping Crane Maintenance Trust now the Crane Trust.

A respected farmer, rancher, and veterinarian, Meismer is known for his commitment to protecting Nebraska’s natural resources.

<a>With 33 years of service, John Miyoshi is recognized for his leadership and dedication to conservation. As the Lower Platte North NRD general manager, Miyoshi oversaw multi-million-dollar budgets and led major projects in soil conservation, water quality and quantity, and flood control. He was instrumental in securing federal funding for the Upper Wahoo Creek Watershed flood reduction dams, that began construction this year.</a>

Miyoshi championed innovation, especially in GIS and data management, helping NRD and NRCS staff work more efficiently. He played a key role in projects like the Sand Creek Environmental Restoration Project (Lake Wanahoo), the Western Sarpy/Clear Creek Levee Project, and rural water systems for Bruno and Colon, Nebraska.

Known for building strong partnerships across all levels of government, Miyoshi brought people together around shared goals—even on controversial efforts. His legacy includes the establishment of the Lower Platte North NRD’s Ground Water Quality and Quantity Management Area, reflecting his commitment to protecting Nebraska’s resources.

Martha “Marty” Link – NRD Supporter

With a 32-year career at the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy, Marty Link is known for leadership, technical expertise, and enduring partnership with Nebraska’s NRDs. A professional geologist and Buffalo County native, Link played a pivotal role in groundwater protection, beginning with the Groundwater Management Area Program and later supervising the groundwater, wellhead protection, and nonpoint source programs.

Link championed collaboration with NRDs, mentored staff, and helped shape local groundwater management plans. Known for her approachability and ability to translate complex science into plain language, Link built trust across all 23 NRDs. She was a regular presence at NRD board and manager meetings, the Water Programs Conference, and NARD events.

Her legacy reflects a deep passion for natural resources and a unique ability to connect with everyone—from farmers to EPA officials.

Paxton Native Among NRD Hall of Fame Inductees Announced at Husker Harvest Days

OGALLALA, Neb. — Downtown Ogallala is set to come alive with laughter, music, and 70s flair as the first-ever Mrs. Roper Romp &amp; Pub Crawl takes over the streets on Saturday, September 20, from 4 to 8 p.m.

The event promises a non-traditional way to support the local American Legion Post 135 while embracing a spirit of fun and community. Attendees — from Helens and Stanleys to Jacks, Chrissys, and even Mr. Furleys — are encouraged to channel their inner 70s personas with kaftans and groovy vibes. For those who need a costume, Helen’s Boutique will be open to help participants get into character.

The romp will have participants hopping between “Romp Stomp” locations across downtown, including the Legion, Second Chapter, Little Jerry’s, Underpass, and Driftwood. Along the way, attendees will enjoy raffle baskets, groovy 70s music, food, drinks, and plenty of silliness. The fun continues at Rendezvous Square, where participants can join in the Indian Summer Rendezvous concerts happening that night.

All funds raised will directly benefit the Legion, supporting its ongoing efforts and programs for veterans and the local community. Inspired by a similar romp held in Columbus this summer, the Ogallala event promises to combine nostalgia, entertainment, and charity in one unique package.

 </figure>OGALLALA, Neb. — Downtown Ogallala is set to come alive with laughter, music, and 70s flair as the first-ever Mrs. Roper Romp &amp; Pub Crawl takes over the streets on Saturday, September 20, from 4 to 8 p.m.The event promises a non-traditional way to support the local American Legion Post 135 while embracing a spirit of fun and community. Attendees — from Helens and Stanleys to Jacks, Chrissys, and even Mr. Furleys — are encouraged to channel their inner 70s personas with kaftans and groovy vibes. For those who need a costume, Helen’s Boutique will be open to help participants get into character.The romp will have participants hopping between “Romp Stomp” locations across downtown, including the Legion, Second Chapter, Little Jerry’s, Underpass, and Driftwood. Along the way, attendees will enjoy raffle baskets, groovy 70s music, food, drinks, and plenty of silliness. The fun continues at Rendezvous Square, where participants can join in the Indian Summer Rendezvous concerts happening that night.All funds raised will directly benefit the Legion, supporting its ongoing efforts and programs for veterans and the local community. LINCOLN, Neb. — The&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;Leadership Education/Action Development (LEAD) Program is pleased to announce the selection of 27 exceptional individuals as Fellows of&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;LEAD Class 44. Chosen for their leadership potential, commitment to agriculture and dedication to their communities, these Fellows represent a wide range of backgrounds within&nbsp;Nebraska’s agricultural industry.

Starting this September and over the next two years, Class 44 Fellows will engage in a comprehensive curriculum designed to strengthen their leadership skills, expand their knowledge of state, national and global agricultural issues, all&nbsp;while preparing them to serve as leaders in their communities and industries.

“I am thrilled to welcome this outstanding group of individuals to&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;LEAD Class 44,” said Kurtis Harms, Director of the&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;LEAD Program. “Nebraska&nbsp;LEAD Class 44 represents the next generation of leaders who will help guide our state forward. These individuals bring unique experiences, perspectives and energy to the program. I’m eager to see how they will grow through this journey and the positive impact they’ll make in their communities and across&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;agriculture.”

The&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;LEAD Program, now in its 44th year, has a long-standing mission of developing agricultural leaders who are equipped to address the challenges and opportunities facing&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;and beyond. Through in-state seminars, a national study experience and an&nbsp;international study/travel seminar, the program provides Fellows with the skills and experiences necessary to lead effectively in an ever-changing agricultural landscape.

Nebraska LEAD Program Announces Class 44 Fellows; One North Platte Native in Class

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — Get ready, North Platte! St. Patrick’s Church is rolling out two full days of food, games, music, and family fun for its annual Block Party this weekend.

The celebration kicks off Saturday, Sept. 13, from 6:30 to 11 p.m. with an evening designed for adults. Guests can enjoy live music from Kim Baxter, a free-will donation nacho bar prepared by parish volunteers, and a beer garden featuring local craft brews from Ape Ship. The party takes over the parking lot at 5th and Walnut streets, and everyone is welcome — no church membership required.

Sunday, Sept. 14, from noon to 3 p.m., shifts the spotlight to families. Kids can jump into bounce houses, play cornhole and pickleball, or join games run by local sports teams, while parents enjoy a barbecue luncheon featuring shredded beef, scalloped potatoes, green beans, and pies for $12 per plate or $40 per family. The street north of the church will be blocked off to create a safe, festive space for everyone.

Raffles add extra excitement this year. Prizes include $500 cash, gift cards, and coveted reserved pews for Christmas Mass. A special $50 raffle offers one lucky winner a full year of tuition at North Platte Catholic Schools — only 200 tickets will be sold.

“Part of our faith is where God makes us part of His family. And what do families do? They get together,” said Father Johnathan Sorensen. “This block party is a big old family party.”

Maddy Krebs, a member of the organizing committee, said, “We wanted to create something for everyone — adults, kids, families, and anyone in the community who wants to come out. Seeing people connect and have fun is what makes it all worth it.”

She added, “It takes a lot of planning and support from local businesses and volunteers, but the smiles on people’s faces make it all worth it. I love watching kids play and families enjoy the day together.”

The weekend format, introduced three years ago, gives adults a night out while keeping Sunday fun for families and children. Volunteers and parishioners spend months preparing, with support from local businesses that donate meals, prizes, and other essentials.

“Community is at the heart of this event,” Father Sorensen said. “Whether it’s sharing a meal, winning a raffle, or just laughing together, it’s about building relationships and celebrating together.”
