Hosted by Nebraska Extension and Nebraska Women in Agriculture in partnership with the Audubon Center at Rowe Sanctuary, this hands-on workshop will highlight how Nebraska’s working lands can create additional revenue streams through agri-tourism while preserving agricultural heritage and natural resources.

Participants will hear from local experts about business planning, marketing, liability considerations, and practical steps for developing successful agri-tourism ventures. The program will also feature a conservation-focused tour and guided crane viewing experience along the Platte River at sunset, offering attendees firsthand insight into how conservation and tourism can work hand-in-hand.

“Nebraska farms and ranches have unique stories and landscapes that attract visitors from across the country,” organizers said. “This workshop is designed to provide practical tools and inspiration to help producers open their gates and welcome guests in a way that strengthens both their operations and rural communities.”

Agri-Tourism Workshop to show Farmers and Ranchers Available Opportunities

Putting up hay is really a way of preserving forage by limiting moisture. As long as hay stays dry, it stays stable. While we often assume older hay means lower quality, losses are usually less about age and more about storage — once moisture shows up, quality begins to slip.

And we actually have proof of that. There are documented bales put up in the Sandhills in the late 1940s that were stored dry for decades, and even when tested in 2024, quality wasn’t nearly as poor as you’d expect. That tells us age alone isn’t driving quality loss — storage conditions are.

In real-world conditions, anytime a bale gets warm and wet enough, microbes become active again. As they grow, they use the bale itself for energy, which means we’re losing dry matter — that feed is literally disappearing.

That dry matter loss usually shows up first as a decline in TDN. Microbes go after the most digestible, high-energy parts of the plant, leaving behind more fiber and less usable energy.

Crude protein is more complicated. We can lose protein through leaf shatter or weathering, but because protein is measured as a percentage of dry matter, it doesn’t always decline the same way energy does. Moisture and heating can also damage protein and reduce availability.

Finally, a lot of quality loss in outside-stored hay is concentrated on the outside of the bale — &nbsp;especially round bales, where a major portion of the total bale resides. Cows often sort and refuse the more highly weathered material, so actual intake can be much lower than a forage test suggests.

Despite that issue, forage testing older hay is critical — it’s the best way to get an accurate picture of what your cattle are actually consuming and to make sound feeding decisions.

Alfalfa weevil is a serious pest of alfalfa and can cause significant damage, usually in April and May before the first cutting. Reports of reduced efficacy of pyrethroids in Nebraska as well as confirmed resistance to pyrethroids in several western states led to a project in 2025 to determine if Nebraska weevil populations are developing resistance.

During the 2025 season, alfalfa weevil larvae were collected from 12 counties across the state including the panhandle, southwest, south central, and eastern Nebraska. The larvae were shipped live to the PHREEC Entomology Lab in Scottsbluff where they were exposed to the label rate of two types of pyrethroid insecticides: lambda-cyhalothrin and permethrin. The study found that 5 of the 12 weevil populations had 90% or less mortality when exposed to lambda-cyhalothrin. This indicates that some Nebraska weevil populations may be losing susceptibility to lambda-cyhalothrin. In contrast, all 12 weevil populations had a 100% mortality rate when exposed to permethrin.

What does this mean for alfalfa weevil management? Currently there are only two insecticide modes of action available for chemical control of this insect, pyrethroids and indoxacarb (Steward). Because of this, resistance management and the use of alternative control methods is critical. Make sure to scout and only spray when thresholds are reached; use the highest labeled rates; rotate control measures to delay resistance development. Traditionally, summer pasture leases are for 5 or 6 months from May &nbsp;or June to October or November. &nbsp;Specific starting and ending dates can be used, but there could be exceptions based on spring weather conditions or if there were drought conditions the previous year that might warrant delaying turn-out to allow some recovery of grasses.

A lease clause that provides details on what would happen if drought occurs during the season is a must. &nbsp;Most often, this is handled by reduced stocking rates or a shorter grazing period. Other situations that could affect the amount of pasture available includes severe hail, grasshoppers, or wildfire. &nbsp;In fairness of course, pasture rent owed should also be adjusted accordingly if the grazing period is shortened. &nbsp;Consider pricing leases based on grazing animal unit months (AUM’s) rather than a flat rate per acre or cow-calf pair. &nbsp;This can make it easier when adjustments are made to the length of time grazing occurs. &nbsp;In some cases, an abundance of pasture growth might result in extra grazing.

If you’re planning to seed alfalfa this year, one of the most important decisions you’ll make happens before the planter ever rolls—and that’s variety selection. Disease resistance should be part of that decision, especially when it comes to Phytophthora root rot and anthracnose.

Start by thinking about the fields you’re planting. Heavier soils, poor drainage, or areas that stay wet after rains increase the risk of Phytophthora root rot. In new seedings, it can cause rapid seedling death under wet conditions. In established stands, it damages the taproot, leading to yield loss, thinning stands, and a higher risk of winterkill.

Now look at fields with a history of stem disease, frequent harvest traffic, or past stand decline. Those conditions increase the risk of anthracnose. This disease attacks stems and crowns, spreads easily through rain, wind, and harvesting equipment, and can significantly reduce production within a few growing seasons.

Mark and Robyn Jones hope to invest and build ‘world-class cattle operation’

LINCOLN — In what appears to be a record-high buy for a Nebraska ranch, a roughly 40,000-acre Sandhills property with a history of prominent owners has shifted hands to a self-made billionaire insurance couple with a vision to build a “world-class cattle operation.”

Sold for $56 million, Lincoln County’s Pawnee Springs Ranch on Tuesday became the latest investment for Mark and Robyn Jones of Westlake, Texas. The high school sweethearts with a growing family of six kids and 20 grandchildren said they were seeking to diversify their business ventures.

Among other key holdings is part ownership of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.goosehead.com/about/" target="_blank">Goosehead Insurance</a>, a public company the Joneses founded and grew, and a sprawling forested timberland ranch the pair bought a few years ago in Montana.&nbsp;

“What we wanted to do is have a sizable operation that focuses on actual agricultural production,” Mark Jones said in an interview days ago on his 64th birthday. “The Sandhills quickly jumped to the top of the list.”

Mark Johnson of Hall and Hall, which handles ag real estate in nine states, said Pawnee Springs Ranch “exemplifies the top qualities of a Nebraska Sandhills river ranch.”

Drawn by the property’s 2,500 mother cows, wildlife habitat, native range, river corridors and other ag benefits of the Ogallala Aquifer, Jones said the search led them to the Nebraska ranchland east of North Platte, whose name harkens to the area’s original Native American inhabitants.

Hall and Hall, an ag focused multi-state real estate company based in Valentine, represented both the buyer and seller in the private listing deal, with local agent Mark Johnson serving as listing broker.&nbsp;

When Hall and Hall represented owners of the Nebraska Metzger ranch last year, the asking price for that 55,136-acre property was $50 million, an amount brokers described then as possible state record for a ranch sale. Johnson said the Metzger family ultimately decided to keep the Cherry County multigenerational ranch and work through the family dynamics.

Publicly available documents show that the Gottsch Feeding Corp. sold Pawnee Springs Land and Cattle LLC Tuesday for $56 million.

“It’s the largest total dollar ranch sale we’ve been able to determine from any records we could find,” Johnson said.

Among past owners of the Pawnee Springs property, which dates back to 1918, are names that ring familiar to Nebraska business and social circles. A former Nebraska governor, Keith Neville, was a previous owner. Construction titan Peter Kiewit bought the operation in 1949. He once told the North Platte Telegraph that the ranch derived its name from the natural springs that flowed.

The family behind Gottsch Feeding Corp. started leasing in 1985 and eventually purchased the ranch. In a statement regarding Tuesday’s sale, the Gottsches said “with a heavy heart” it agreed to sell a ranch that has been part of their family for 41 years.

“With three generations being a part of the spring brandings, summer grass and fall/winter backgroundings, Pawnee has shaped many lives,” the Gottsches said, offering special thanks to the Boeshart family caretakers and to neighbors who pitched in to help during branding season. “Those memories will always be cherished.”

The Gottsch statement said its family business footprint spans Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri and Texas, and its commitment stretches seven decades of “bridging the gap between ranching, high-tech feedlot management and sustainable farming.”

Under the new ownership, Pawnee Springs for the most part will maintain current operations, said Ryan Langston, son-in-law to Jones and new CEO of the ranch. That includes raising calves from birth to weaning and returning them to grass as yearlings, as well as running ag pivots.

Three cowboys who now live and work on the ranch will stay, Langston said, and a new manager is to be hired to replace the current one who he said is moving on with the Gottsches.

“We are making a long-term commitment to the area,” Langston said. “We intend to hire local talent where possible, partner with our neighbors and make meaningful contributions to the local community.”

Known also for philanthropy, the Joneses in 2021 donated $101 million to the Montana State University nursing program — the home state of the scenic Flathead Ridge Ranch they bought that year. The couple&nbsp;<a href="https://www.montana.edu/news/21412/a-day-of-new-beginnings-msu-nursing-college-receives-101-million-gift-from-founders-of-goosehead-insurance" target="_blank">told the university</a>&nbsp;news service their intention was to help address one of the most defining challenges of the time: access to health care, particularly for residents of rural and remote areas.

The university at the time called it the largest ever donation to a college of nursing and the largest private gift in the state’s history.

Regarding the Nebraska purchase, Jones told the Examiner he and his wife hope it is the first of more acquisitions in the region. He said they were eager to invest in and build a “large-scale, truly world-class beef production operation … that in its most fundamental form is converting grass to protein.”&nbsp;

He sees the family’s focus being in Nebraska, Kansas, Wyoming and Montana. The Pawnee Springs operation, he said, “will be a platform we can build onto.”

As a commercial enterprise, the Nebraska tract differs from the Jones’ 125,000-acre alpine ranch in Montana, which they refer to as a&nbsp;<a href="https://flatheadbeacon.com/2021/02/08/texas-power-couple-acquires-125800-acres-of-timberland-west-of-kalispell/" target="_blank">“family legacy investment.</a>” Jones said he and his wife have tried to continue that property’s historical use by keeping the vast majority open to public recreation.

There, he said, “our objective is really to&nbsp;<a href="https://flatheadbeacon.com/2021/06/09/meet-the-joneses/" target="_blank">conserve the land</a>. It’s been fairly heavily logged … So we’re very focused on nursing the forest back to optimal health.”&nbsp;

The Joneses are not planning to live in Nebraska, but hope to be “active participants” in the local community.

Said Jones: “You should expect us to have a very real and ongoing presence and engagement with the community.”

The couple’s fortune is built upon a relationship that started as teens in Alberta, Canada. Married young and with their first few kids, Jones said he enrolled in college in the mid-1980s. In 1989, the family moved to Boston so he could attend Harvard Business School.

“Robyn was pregnant at that time with our fifth daughter. I believe that we still hold the record for the greatest number of kids for any Harvard Business School student,” Jones said with a chuckle.

He worked several years at Bain global management consulting firm. Robyn went from stay-at-home mom to work that led her to establish the insurance company the couple continued to grow together, after her husband made a job switch.

“When I told my partners (at Bain) I was leaving, they all laughed,” Jones recalled. “They thought, ‘This Jones has lost his mind.’ But you know, we’re very comfortable with people laughing at us.”

The Joneses remain chair and vice chair of Goosehead, a large national insurance broker that connects people with various home, auto, flood and other insurance carriers. Forbes estimates the couple’s combined net worth at $2 billion, and included Robyn on a 2025 list of America’s richest “self-made” women entrepreneurs, noting a net worth for her of $1.2 billion.

An appealing part of the Nebraska ranch purchase, said Jones, whose early jobs included laying pipe and driving a truck, was the opportunity to have their grandkids work there.&nbsp;

“We want our grandkids to learn and see the value of hard work,” he said.

He said his dealings with the sellers reflected an integrity he equates to the ranching operation.

“These are the kind of people we love to do business with,” he said.

While we are still early in the new year, it is time to start thinking about any spring annual forages that we might plant. &nbsp;Part of the process may be anticipating a need for extra feed or booking seed early for possible discounts.

For spring or cool-season annual forages, the planting period is typically mid to late March to early April, or when soil temperatures are in the 42 to 45 degree range. &nbsp;Oats is probably the most common cool-season annual forage planted in Nebraska. &nbsp;However, spring triticale or spring barley are two other small grain options that have been found to perform similarly to oats in terms of forage yield and quality. &nbsp;

Also similar is the number of days until ready to begin grazing or hay; so, the different species could be mixed if desired. &nbsp;One could look at seed cost of the different species before making a decision. &nbsp; With the early spring planting date of the cool-season annuals, grazing can typically begin around the 3rd or 4th week of May and last into early July. &nbsp;Haying usually take place around the 3rd week of June.

If grazing is a primary goal, Italian ryegrass could be included in a mix with the cereal grains and this will result in a longer grazing period. &nbsp;Field peas are another species that could be included to enhance forage quality and provide some nitrogen fixation. &nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE, NEB.–– Nebraska Extension will offer commercial pesticide training for initial certification and recertification at the West Central Research, Extension and Education Center in North Platte.

The training program will offer multiple dates for initial training and recertification. All sessions will begin at 8:30 a.m., and participants are encouraged to arrive early for check-in. 

Understanding the difference between commercial and noncommercial applicators is important when considering commercial pesticide training.

A noncommercial applicator is a licensed applicator who applies restricted-use pesticides only on land owned or controlled by their employer or for a governmental agency or political subdivision of the state. This category also includes individuals using restricted or general-use pesticides for communitywide outdoor vector control on behalf of a political subdivision of the state.

Nebraska Extension commercial pesticide training dates set for North Platte

With leaves off and grasses dormant, late fall and winter can be an effective time to get ahead of brush in pasture and rangeland. However, it’s important to recognize that control options are more limited right with plants not actively growing. That means foliar herbicide treatments aren’t an option.

For evergreens like eastern red cedar, mechanical control is one of the best options right now. Cutting trees off at ground level is highly effective, and once a cedar is cut, it will not regrow. With grasses dormant, it’s easier to spot small trees and access infested areas before they become bigger problems.

For woody shrubs like buckbrush and smooth sumac, winter basal bark treatments can still be effective. Applying a labeled herbicide mixed with oil around the lower portion of the stem targets the plant directly and avoids damage to surrounding forage. This works best on individual plants or smaller patches, and good coverage is critical.

Yucca can be more challenging. Mowing alone usually doesn’t solve the problem, but targeted herbicide treatments or repeated pressure can help. In some cases, winter grazing can reduce patches over time, especially where cattle have learned to disturb and uproot plants.

Even when treatment options are limited, winter is a valuable time to identify and map problem patches, flag areas for future treatment, and think through which tools—mechanical control, grazing, fire, or herbicide—will fit best once plants are actively growing again.

A little planning now can save grazing acres, time, and money down the road.

Cutting trees off at ground level is highly effective, and once a cedar is cut, it will not regrow. With grasses dormant, it’s easier to spot small trees and access infested areas before they become bigger problems.For woody shrubs like buckbrush and smooth sumac, winter basal bark treatments can still be effective. Applying a labeled herbicide mixed with oil around the lower portion of the stem targets the plant directly and avoids damage to surrounding forage. This works best on individual plants or smaller patches, and good coverage is critical.Yucca can be more challenging. Mowing alone usually doesn’t solve the problem, but targeted herbicide treatments or repeated pressure can help. In some cases, winter grazing can reduce patches over time, especially where cattle have learned to disturb and uproot plants.Even when treatment options are limited, winter is a valuable time to identify and map problem patches, flag areas for future treatment, and think through which tools—mechanical control, grazing, fire, or herbicide—will fit best once plants are actively growing again.A little planning now can save grazing acres, time, and money down the road.

If it has been several years since your last soil test, consider sampling this spring to fine-tune where fertility dollars work best.

Registration will run from 9:30 to 10 a.m. Mountain Time, followed by morning presentations from Nebraska Extension specialists and producer speakers. Lunch will be served at noon, with the on-site tour taking place in the afternoon.

The meeting will be held at Crossroads Wesleyan Church, 220 W. 17th St. in Imperial.

Winter stocker tour at Maddux Cattle Company set for Jan. 21

A Logan County sixth grader is gaining hands-on farming experience through 4-H, using a wheat agronomy project to learn both the fieldwork and business side of agriculture.

Leo Walz, a fifth-year 4-H member, joined Nebraska Extension Educator Kaitlin Jacobson in the studio to talk about his project and what 4-H has meant to him so far.

Walz said joining 4-H felt natural, as it’s long been part of his family. “That’s where my mom and dad met,” he said. “So it kind of just came naturally. It’s a family thing.”

Over the years, Walz has explored a variety of projects. “My first two years, I showed cattle and then I did some shooting sports,” he said. “This last year, I did some baking projects and then this agronomy.”

When asked what he’s enjoyed most, Walz didn’t hesitate. “I liked showing cattle,” he said, adding that shooting sports has also been a favorite.

His current wheat agronomy project focuses on his family’s farm and a push toward more natural farming practices. “It involves our farm and everything we’re trying to do to get our farm back to not trying to use herbicides and chemicals,” Walz explained. “Kind of go in the natural route.”

That approach has come with challenges. “In today’s world, killing weeds is harder without chemicals,” Walz said. “So trying to keep the weeds down without chemicals is hard.”

Jacobson said projects like agronomy showcase 4-H’s “learn by doing” philosophy. “Agronomy is really just a prime example of the 4-H model,” she said. “4-Hers learn by doing.”

She explained that the project goes beyond fieldwork and includes detailed record-keeping. “He has a red binder with him, and that’s the record-keeping aspect,” Jacobson said. “You document all your expenses, what you make — all those things.”

Walz said much of that information came directly from his family’s farming operation. “Pretty much everything that my dad already has written down in the computers,” he said. “He was able to just give me that information right from his phone.”

Jacobson said that experience gives youth a realistic look at farming. “These are things that farmers have to do,” she said. “If a youth finds their spark in agriculture and wants to pursue being a farmer, this is great experience.”

Walz said the financial side of the project taught him a lot. “When we were doing the money aspect, like the breaking even stuff, I learned a lot about that,” he said.

Looking ahead, Walz plans to continue in 4-H. “This next year, I hope to do a couple more agronomy projects and some more wood and baking projects,” he said.

For youth thinking about joining 4-H, Walz offered simple advice: “Follow what you want to do and try your hardest.”

Jacobson said agronomy is just one of many project areas available. “The bottom line is you learn by doing,” she said. “It’s fun, and 4-Hers get life skills they can take with them into their adult life.”

Fall rain and snow are good for wheat and next year’s crops, but it does have its drawbacks.&nbsp;&nbsp; One challenge is its impact on corn stalk feed quality.

While some parts of Nebraska have been dry&nbsp;this fall, other areas of the state have received some rain and consistent snow over the past several weeks.&nbsp; Rain reduces corn stalk quality several ways.&nbsp; Most easily noticed is&nbsp;how fast stalks can get soiled or trampled into the ground if the fields become muddy.

Less noticeable are nutritional changes.&nbsp; Rain or melting snow soaks into dry corn stalk residue and leaches out some of the soluble nutrients.&nbsp; Most serious is the loss of sugars and other energy-dense nutrients, which lowers the TDN or energy value of the stalks.&nbsp; These same nutrients also disappear if stalks begin to mold or rot in the field.&nbsp; Then palatability and intake also decline.

Another factor that affects cornstalk grazing is wind.&nbsp; Throughout the fall, there always seems to be those days where excessively high winds will easily blow corn leaves and husks off the field.&nbsp; This of course, can impact the amount of feed, and after grain, those leaves and husks contain the highest nutritional quality.

There is little you can do to prevent these losses.&nbsp; What you can do, though, is to closely monitor cow and field conditions while adjusting your supplementation program accordingly.&nbsp; Since weathering by rain reduces TDN more than it reduces protein, consider the energy value of your supplements as well as its protein content.

Your records can help you identify the source of receipts, and this information is important to help separate farm and nonfarm receipts and taxable from nontaxable incomes. For example, buying fuel for a vehicle that is used to check pasture is tax deductible, as well as things like fencing materials, net wrap, and repairs to equipment to name a few.

Preparing now can help speed up the tax preparation process. All this information is used to help prepare tax returns and just as important can help producers monitor the progress of the operation. Records can show if the business is improving and can help us identify potential changes to make.

Hay is expensive and many long hours go into harvesting, storing, and feeding it.&nbsp; Don’t waste up to a third of it by using poor feeding practices.

Believe it or not, cattle can trample, over consume, manure on, and use for bedding up to 25 to 45 percent of your hay when it is fed with no restrictions.&nbsp; Extra control in feeding can pay off big time with that expensive hay.

For starters, don’t provide more than one day’s supply at a time.&nbsp; Research has shown that when cows are fed a four-day supply, they will overeat and waste 20 to 30 percent more hay than when they are fed one day at a time.&nbsp; This adds up to $50 to $75 more per cow over a four-month feeding period.&nbsp; Best of all is to feed only what the livestock will clean up in one meal, so nothing is left over to be wasted.&nbsp; Be sure to provide sufficient space, though, for all animals to eat at once so boss cows don’t stop timid cows from getting their fair share.

Another thing you can do is restrict access to hay.&nbsp; Use bale racks or rings to keep animals off the hay.&nbsp; Especially useful are racks with barriers around the bottom that prevent livestock from pulling hay loose with their feet and dragging it out to be stepped on. If you unroll bales or grind and feed on the ground, position an electric fence alongside or above the hay to keep cows from trampling or bedding down on the hay.

As always, feed a balanced ration that provides sufficient energy and protein, but not too much.&nbsp; Animals that eat more protein than they need will simply excrete it as extra nitrogen in their urine.&nbsp; This is just as wasteful as directly trampling it into the ground.&nbsp;

To lighten the workload when feeding hay, we often take short cuts and leave some twine or net wrap on the bales.&nbsp; And whether we want them to or not, animals eat some of that twine.

There is the potential for twine to accumulate in the rumen of cattle and cause obstruction.&nbsp; Research at North Dakota State University has confirmed this risk and provided further information on what happens to twine when cattle eat it.

In a series of experiments, the North Dakota research first showed that neither plastic net wrap nor biodegradable twine get digested by rumen microbes.&nbsp; The old-fashioned sisal twine, however, does get digested, although quite a bit more slowly than hay.

In another study net wrap was included in the ration fed to steers for an extended period of time.&nbsp; Then, 14 days before the steers were harvested, the net wrap was removed from the feed to learn if the net wrap eaten earlier might get cleared out of the rumen and digestive system.&nbsp; Turns out it was still in the rumen even after 14 days.

So, what should you do?&nbsp; First, remember that it doesn’t appear to be a health concern very often.&nbsp; And cows obviously are more at risk than feedlot animals.&nbsp; So, it might be wise to remove as much twine, especially plastic twine, as can be removed easily from bales before feeding.&nbsp; Twine in ground hay may be less of a problem since more of it is likely to pass completely through the animal.

Think about how shortcuts and work-reducing actions you take this winter might affect your animals.&nbsp; Then act accordingly.&nbsp;

Some North Dakota farmers are owed money after a large bankruptcy filing by a Nebraska-based grain dealer.&nbsp;

The North Dakota Department of Agriculture says farmers in the state are owed more than $900,000 by the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.hansenmueller.com/" target="_blank">Hansen-Mueller Co</a>.&nbsp;

The bankruptcy affects creditors in multiple states, including South Dakota and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.mda.state.mn.us/mda-advises-farmers-ties-hansen-mueller-co-file-claims" target="_blank">Minnesota</a>. Creditors also include a trucking company in North Dakota.

Creditors also include a trucking company in North Dakota.David Barrett is a Bismarck ag law attorney with clients that include some of the North Dakota farmers who will be filing claims.&nbsp;He has clients in other states, too, and has already filed a $1.2 million claim for a grain elevator in Mississippi.“There’s creditors everywhere,” Barrett said, with more filings to come.&nbsp;Hansen-Mueller leases a grain storage facility in Grand Forks and has a roving grain buyers license in the state. As part of being licensed in the state, it also would have to secure a bond to help ensure it can pay for grain it has purchased.&nbsp;However, the company filed for bankruptcy Nov. 17, before the Department of Agriculture could begin insolvency proceedings. Those proceedings could have allowed the state to access the company’s bond to help repay farmers.Shaun Quissell, director of the Grain and Livestock Division for the state Ag Department, said Hansen-Mueller was bonded for about $778,000 — less than what is owed.&nbsp;The state also has a credit sales indemnity fund, which helps protect farmers from fraudulent buyers.&nbsp;Quissell also said the grain purchase agreements between Hansen-Mueller and the farmers were not credit sales contracts and would not have been covered by that fund.&nbsp;Because the company declared bankruptcy, the bond money could become part of the bankruptcy proceeding, Quissell said.&nbsp;Most of the North Dakota transactions involved oats, Quissell said.
