DCSO investigating reports of diesel theft, seeking information 

Lincoln, Neb. —An upcoming four-part extension workshop for women in agriculture will focus on emergency preparedness for rural families.

The program will be a four-part series, held at numerous locations across Nebraska and Indiana. The series will focus on farm and ranch emergency management, first aid, fire protection and hazardous materials. Workshops will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Central time on March 5, 7, 12 and 14.

The program is a collaboration between extension women in agriculture programs at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Purdue University.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, agricultural occupations have high rates of work-related injuries and deaths. While not all emergencies result in bodily injury or death, they also may cost rural families in other ways.

“Women play a critical role in ensuring the safety of their homes and rural communities,” said Jessica Groskopf, director of the Nebraska Women in Agriculture program. “In many farm and ranch families, safety is an important topic, but it sometimes gets overlooked because it does not directly impact profitability.”

Each state’s workshop sites will be hosted by local extension personnel. Keynote speakers will be simulcast to each location, and each site will provide additional speakers and hands-on activities. Dinner will be included.

Groskopf said the program’s structure is intended to strengthen networks of women in rural areas, which can provide opportunities for building trust and sharing information. “Connections are so important to rural women,” she said. “We have seen the benefits that come from knowing your peers, having a place to share difficulties, and mitigate the isolation that so many of us in agriculture often feel.”

The workshops seek to help participants initiate preventative practices, set up a plan to deal with emergencies before they occur and be more comfortable reacting to emergency situations.

There is a registration fee of $50 per person before Feb. 20. The fee increases to $60 per person after Feb. 20. Participants should&nbsp; lan to attend each session. A virtual option is available for those unable to attend a workshop site, although in-person attendance is highly encouraged to better network with other attendees and interact with speakers. The virtual registration fee is $75 before Feb. 20 and $80 after Feb. 20. Registration may be completed on the Nebraska Women in Agriculture website, https://wia.unl.edu/prep.

Emergency Snow Route Proposed Additions

Sometime between December 27th, 2023 and January 3rd, 2024, a suspect entered onto the property at 2nd and Buffalo Bill Avenue, North Platte, and removed a PJ tandem axle car trailer from the property.  The trailer was valued at $4,500. 

Between January 1st and January 3rd, 2024 a suspect discarded the above trailer on a property at South Buffalo and West State Farm Road.  The suspect unhooked from the PJ trailer and pulled the license plates (Nebraska Trailer 15X4497) from the trailer.  The suspect then hooked onto a brand new 2024 H&amp;H tandem aluminum car trailer with electric tilt.  The trailer is valued at over $18,000.

The Sidney Police Department is investigating the theft of this 8-foot pickup box trailer, from the 2200 block of Hickory Street sometime between Friday, December 29th and Sunday December 30th. Trailer had a load of lumber on it. If you have information, you can provide it to an Officer by calling 308-254-5515.

Scottsbluff Police Department arrested 7 impaired drivers during the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over Campaign

North Platte, Ne - As of 2pm CST, Interstate 80 eastbound has reopened. The Nebraska Department of Transportation closed the interstate Monday between Grand Island and Lexington, eventually closing it all the way to Ogallala Tuesday morning.

NDOT says I-80 is now OPEN in BOTH eastbound and westbound directions. Exercise extreme caution and adjust your driving speed accordingly. Highway 30 is open both directions.

One driver heading to Minnesota said he rolled into town around 4:30pm yesterday and decided to wait out the storm. Another truck driver from Utah told the POST he was heading eastbound on I-80 when the interstate closed in Ogallala but was told to drive to North Platte. He said he pulled off the interstate around 11:30 this morning.

01/09 City of Grant City Council Meeting Agenda

As winter weather is still looming in the area, The Nebraska Department of Transportation says I-80 eastbound and westbound is now closed from Ogallala to Grand Island.

According to NDOT, HWY 30 is now open in both directions. Different sections of HWY 30 are considered partial with snow and completely covered with ice and snow. NDOT recommends highway 30 to be used for local traffic.

Travel is not advised as NDOT crews are working hard to get the roads cleared. If traveling, travel at a slow speed and distance between cars.&nbsp; The Nebraska State Patrol announced today that they have responded to over 200 weather-related incidents. I-80 eastbound and westbound now closed from Ogallala to Grand Island

LINCOLN, NE&nbsp;- Governor Jim Pillen called for a 40% reduction in state property taxes in 2024. He is asking the Nebraska Legislature as well as chambers of commerce to partner in achieving that goal, stating it is a necessity for all Nebraskans.

“Property taxes are so out of whack, you don’t even need to own property to be adversely affected,” said Gov. Pillen. “We need to do this for the countless Nebraskans who have worked, raised a family, and educated their kids here, by giving them the opportunity to retire in Nebraska. Our current property tax structure is taxing lifelong Nebraskans out of their homes – it is unacceptable.”

Addressing high property taxes is the Governor’s top priority during the current legislative session.

“In 2023, state property taxes exceeded $5 billion. In the last six years alone, property tax collections skyrocketed $1.3 billion. We need transformational property tax reform to get us down to around $3 billion annually,” said Gov. Pillen.

The Governor convened a 40-person workgroup in July to study the issue of property taxes and home valuations. The group, made up of state senators, representatives from the Nebraska State Chamber of Commerce, the Lincoln and Omaha chambers of commerce, agriculture industry groups and others, all agreed it was not enough to keep property taxes level. A significant reduction was required.

“Nebraska is already the best place to live, work, and raise a family,” said Gov. Pillen. “In order to stay competitive with other low tax states, we need to reduce property taxes by 40%. This reduction will drive economic growth through workforce and new business development.”

Gov. Pillen wants to work with the Legislature to determine the right path forward. He made clear that any plan would incorporate a hard cap on county and city spending. The state, he said, would be leading by example.

“We will reduce state spending by 3% this fiscal year, followed by another 6% in fiscal year 2025, while ensuring that state services improve through efficiencies and technology,” said Gov. Pillen.

Proposals also include front-loading property tax credits instead of requiring taxpayers to claim them, to further provide state aid to schools and reduce state spending. It would also require expanding the state’s tax base.

Dawson PPD’s board voted to retain the same officers for 2024. At the January 4 meeting, Dan Muhlbach of Kearney was voted President of the board. Craig Wietjes of Riverdale is the Vice President. The Treasurer is Page Peterson of Gothenburg. Legal Counsel Bronson Malcom will continue as Secretary.

Irrigation customer meetings will be held in North Platte on January 23, Kearney on January 25, and Lexington on January 30. Agenda items include policies, incentive programs and the load management program. Meeting details are available on the District’s website. Customers are asked to RSVP by January 16 if they plan to attend.

While the District’s operating expenses are about four percent higher than budget, revenues also exceed the November budget projection by $5.1 million. To date, Dawson PPD has added $8.25 million net to the district’s 2023 plant value without adding to long-term debt.

Dawson PPD’s metering system will need to be replaced within the next five years. The current system, which has been in place for over 10 years, will be phased out by the manufacturer as they change to new technology. The staff is considering several solutions and will report their findings to the board. Because this will be a major purchase, a Request for Proposal or RFP will be issued, asking vendors for information and pricing.

The board went into executive session to discuss a potential agreement with The Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District for the purchase of power from the Jeffrey Hydro.Board members discussed the process to hire a general manager to succeed Gwen Kautz, who has announced plans to retire at the end of the year.

Dawson PPD directors participate in many industry organizations. Craig Wietjes was recently elected to serve as the Secretary/Treasurer for the Mid-West Electric Consumers Association. Mid-West promotes and protects the interest of federal power customers and consumers within the Missouri River Basin. Dawson PPD customers benefit from low-cost, federally generated hydropower during irrigation season. Midwest’s directors represent utilities in Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming and Nebraska.

I-80 EB Closed from North Platte to Grand Island

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission’s changes to 2024 fishing rules are:

Archery Paddlefish – Archery paddlefish permit holders may harvest paddlefish in the spillway below Gavins Point Dam. The north wall and discharge canal remain closed to archery paddlefish fishing.

Archery Fishing – Only the north wall of the spillway and immediately below the Gavins Point Dam powerhouse downstream to a line extending from the east end of the south cement wall of the discharge canal northwest to the east end of the north wall of the discharge canal will be closed to archery fishing during archery paddlefish season.

Channel Catfish – The statewide bag and length restriction on channel catfish is changed to one fish greater than 30 inches in length.

Yellow Perch – The daily bag limit for yellow perch shall include only five fish 10 inches or longer, of which only one fish may be 12 inches or longer, at Home Valley Lake (Cherry County), Rat and Beaver Wildlife Management Area (Cherry County), Blue Lake (Garden County), Island Lake (Garden County), Smith Lake, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Garden County), Frye Lake WMA (Grant County), and Smith Lake WMA (Sheridan County).

Bluegill – The daily bag limit for bluegill shall include only one fish nine inches or longer at Duck Lake (Cherry County), Pelican Lake (Cherry Lake), Blue Lake (Garden County), Island Lake (Garden County), Smith Lake, FWS (Garden County), Frye Lake WMA (Grant County), and Smith Lake WMA (Sheridan County).

Keith County Chamber Annual Banquet rescheduled for Jan. 29th

I-80 is currently closed from Lexington to Grand Island, and Hwy 30 is impassable both directions between Lexington and Grand Island according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation. Weather conditions are expected to deteriorate throughout the evening across the state.&nbsp;

Closures began on I-80 a little after 3:00pm when the Nebraska State Patrol announced that eastbound and westbound would be closed from Lexington to Kearney. Highway 30 was originally closed from Lexington to Elm Creek. 

Troopers have responded to over 50 weather related incidents throughout the day. As night fall is rolling in,&nbsp;travel is not advised as roadways are covered in ice, reduced visibility according to NDOT.&nbsp;

I-80/HWY 30 closed in both directions from Lexington to Grand Island due to whiteout conditions

The Nebraska Department of Transportation has announced that I-80 from Grand Island to Lexington is now closed in both directions.&nbsp;Weather conditions are expected to deteriorate throughout the evening across the state.

The Nebraska Department of Transportation and the Nebraska State Patrol have announced that I-80 from Kearney to Lexington is closed in both directions. The closure is due to white out conditions and ask travelers to park and wait out the dangerous weather.

Troopers have responded to over 50 weather related incidents today. At this time, HWY 30 between Kearney and Lexington is open but travel is not advised as the roadway is covered in ice, reduced visibility according to NDOT.

I-80 Grand Island to Lexington closed in both directions due to white out conditions

The 2024 mountain lion hunting season in Nebraska’s Niobrara Unit closed Jan. 7 when the harvest sublimit of one female was met.

A 6-year-old collared female lion was shot north of Long Pine. The season opened Jan. 2.

In accordance with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission’s management objectives, the harvest of mountain lions allows the population to remain resilient and healthy, while slowing growth in the Niobrara Unit, and halting growth or moderately reducing the population size in the Pine Ridge Unit.

The Niobrara Unit was added to the Pine Ridge Unit for mountain lion hunting for the first time for the 2024 season. The Niobrara Unit encompasses parts of Brown, Cherry, Keya Paha, Rock and Sheridan counties.

Mountain lion presence has been documented in the Niobrara River Valley of north-central Nebraska since 2001. There has been a resident reproducing population there since 2013 and information gathered through research suggests a population that is growing and will be resilient to harvest.

This is the state’s seventh mountain lion harvest season; the first was in 2014. No mountain lions have been harvested in the Pine Ridge Unit this season as of Jan. 7.

Season 1 in the Pine Ridge Unit will continue through the end of February. The season will end immediately if the annual harvest limit of four mountain lions or sub-limit of two females are reached. An auxiliary season would be held March 16 through the end of March if the annual harvest limit or female sub-limit are not reached during Season 1.

Mountain lion season ends in Niobrara Unit

At approximately 9:26 a.m. on Monday, January 8th, a westbound Mercury Sedan traveling on HWY 30 near road 438 was driven by Miquel Zamudio-Ceballos of Lexington, age 46. The sedan reportedly lost control and collided with an eastbound Cheverolet pickup driven by Darin Park age 52 of Kearney. 

Mr. Zamudio-Ceballos was declared deceased at the scene. Mr. Park was transported by Lexington Volunteer fire and rescue to Lexington Regional Hospital with serious non-life-threatening injuries. Weather and road conditions are believed to be contributing factors leading up to the crash. 

Restraints were in use. Dawson County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Nebraska State Patrol and the Lexington volunteer Fire Department. Next of kin has been notified.

Lexington man killed in crash on HWY 30

Columbus, Neb.&nbsp;– Much of Nebraska got its first taste of snow over the holidays and Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) wants to remind customers of the importance of safety during severe winter weather.

Severe winter storms with heavy amounts of snow, wind, or ice can impact powerlines and result in downed powerlines, downed power poles, and can cause power outages.

“If anyone were to come upon a downed powerline, they should stay clear of the area. Getting too close or touching a downed line could result in serious or fatal injuries,” says NPPD Vice-President of Energy Delivery Scott Walz. “Our crews are prepared and ready to respond to power outages during winter storms and will work to restore power to customers as quickly and as safely as possible.”

NPPD encourages customers to assemble a few items including a flashlight, extra batteries, a portable radio, at least one gallon of water, and a small supply of food, to access in case of a winter outage. It is also suggested that the refrigerator and freezer doors should be kept closed during an outage to keep food cold.

Customers with access to a generator that can be used during an outage, should make sure they are never used indoors and are installed by a licensed electrician. “Generators and grills should not be used in areas that don’t have sufficient ventilation, such as a garage,” adds NPPD Corporate Safety Manager Brad Palu. “It’s also important to make sure indoor fireplaces are properly maintained and ventilated to ensure no one in the home breathes in dangerous fumes or that the fire spreads outside the fireplace.”
