North Platte Community College automotive instructor Bryan Herrick gives students from North Platte High School’s automotive program a tour of NPCC’s Automotive Technology department Friday morning. In addition to the tour, Herrick provided a training session on alignment, explaining basic angles and showing the students how the alignment machine works, to generate interest in the field. A racecar was used for the demonstration, which made adjustments easy to see and do.

- Hunters must wear 400 square inches of hunter orange on their head, chest and back.

- Treat every firearm as if it is loaded.

- Always point the muzzle of your firearm in a safe direction.

- Be sure of your target, what is in front of it, and what is beyond it.

- Keep your finger outside of the trigger guard until you are ready to fire.

- Never shoot at sound, movement, through thick brush, toward a roadway, at water or ice, or at a sky-lined deer.

- Never use a rifle scope to identify deer; always identify your target with binoculars or a spotting scope.

- Never cross a fence, waterway, steep embankment or other obstacle with a loaded firearm.

- Always wear a full-body harness while hunting from an elevated stand or blind.

- If you see someone who isn't following these safety guidelines, speak up.

Ogallala American Legion Post #135 serving a free dinner to any Veteran w/ID card on Friday

County wide tones for ditch fire spreading into unharvested corn field in the Ogallala district. Resources included Command from Ogallala and KL. Brush trucks and tenders from all four agencies along with LEO for traffic control responded. KCEM Kling and MAC 60 responded with FLIR drone. Private farm equipment requested to create fire line. 

Center pivot utilized to halt forward progress of fire. MA requested from Grant due to minor equipment problems with two Keith county units. Structures threatened but not damaged. No injuries reported to IC. Approximately 50 acres of standing corn destroyed. 

The photo is at the point of origin from a poorly maintained semi trailer, west bound on 80. These duals separated from the trailer, crossed the east bound, miraculously not hitting anyone or anything, and the hot metal ignited the ditch and corn field. Semi continued traveling and has not been identified at this time. All units returned to service by 1700 hrs.&nbsp; &nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - The Annual St. Patrick's Church Christmas Boutique show is going to be held this Saturday, Nov. 11th at the St. Patrick's Church in North Platte. The event runs from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm. Starting at 11:00 am, a homemade lunch will be served for $5. Lunch will only be served until 1:00pm. There will be live music and door prizes throughout the day. The event is free to attend.&nbsp;

There will be 30 local vendors selling goodies at the St. Patrick's Christmas Boutique show. As of now, there is still room for 3 more vendors. If interested in becoming a vendor at the show, you can call the church at 308-532-0942. (Audio) St. Patrick’s Church Christmas Boutique

On November 8th 2023 at 3:50 pm, officers responded to the 900 block of S Taft St for reports of an assault. When they arrived, the victim informed officers that they were attempting to move out of 60-year-old Jahi Dumisani’s residence due to him acting strange for the last several nights. As they were getting ready to leave, Dumisani accused the victim of trying to steal from him and threatened to chop off their head.

A short time later, Dumisani grabbed a large machete that was roughly a foot and a half in length and struck the victim in the throat with the blade. Thankfully, due to the condition of the blade being dull and rusted, the victim only suffered minor injury to this area.&nbsp;

While officers were speaking with the victim, they were notified that a driver had just driven into a parked car in a parking lot in the 600 block of E Francis St. Officers on scene of the accident were able to identify the driver as Dumisani, who still had the machete in his hand. The officers on scene were able to talk Dumisani into dropping the machete and took him into custody without further issue.&nbsp;

After further investigation, Dumisani was found to be under the influence of drugs and did not have a valid driver’s license. Jahi Dumisani was incarcerated at the Lincoln County Detention Center for 2nd Degree Assault, Terroristic Threats, Use of a Deadly Weapon to Commit a Felony, DUI Drugs(3rd Offense), Criminal Mischief($5,000), No Proof of Insurance, Driving While Revoked, and No Valid Registration.

Santa’s Workshop returns to North Platte Community College Dec. 5.

Festivities are planned for 5-7:30 p.m. in the activity center and cafeteria on the NPCC South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Rd.

Activities will include cookie decorating, coloring, letter writing to Santa, horse-drawn wagon rides around campus, a hot chocolate bar, games for prizes and a visit by a “special guest.”

The event, organized by NPCC’s Student Life Department, is free and open to the public. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

LCSO wants to remind drivers and passengers to buckle their seat belts for the upcoming Holiday season

North Platte, Neb - This Friday, November 10th, TD Angus at Rishel Ranch will hold a Female only cattle auction at their ranch south of North Platte. According to TD Angus' Trey Wasserburger they will sell over 200 register females, and another 800 plus commercial females.

 Wasserburger said he thinks "it could be the greatest conglomerate of commercial females in the nation this year", with a full sister of Doc Ryan, the $525,000 bull sold from TD Angus at Rishel Ranch, being sold at lot 1 to kick off the day-long sale Friday.&nbsp;

Derek Beck from Eagle Media spoke with Wasserburger in depth about the upcoming sale and also spoke about progress at the Sustainable Beef Plant in North Platte that is currently under construction. LISTEN BELOW.

North Platte Community College’s Business and Community Education department will offer “Christmas Through the Years - A North Platte History” Dec. 5.

Jim Griffin, curator of the Lincoln County Historical Museum, will give a presentation about how North Platte has celebrated Christmas from the Canteen Era of the 1940s to present day.

The program is open to the public. It will be from 7-8:30 p.m. in Room 203 of the W.W. Wood Building on the NPCC North Campus, 1101 Halligan Drive, in North Platte.

NPCC to showcase history of Christmas in North Platte

Brylee Thompson, of Hershey, has been selected as the Business Student of the Month for November at North Platte Community College.

Thompson was nominated for the recognition by Jean Condon, business instructor and chair of the college’s business and technology division.

“Brylee is an excellent student, who is committed and dedicated to her coursework and completing her business degree,” Condon said. “Brylee is great at communicating. If she happens to miss a class or assignments, she always has a plan for completion and is accountable for her homework and course exams.”

Thompson graduated from Hershey Public Schools in 2022 and is pursuing an Associate of Applied Science degree in Business with an entrepreneurship emphasis. She is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and is on track to graduate in May.

“I wanted to go to NPCC because it is close to home and has instructors that genuinely care about me as a student and person,” Thompson said. “They have encouraged me to chase my dreams and are always willing to support me in and out of the classroom.”

When not studying, Thompson keeps busy with a variety of extracurricular activities.

“I am currently the 2023 Miss Burwell Rodeo, so I enjoy going to rodeos and traveling and have plans to compete for Miss Rodeo Nebraska this coming June after I graduate,” Thompson said. “I also have a small jewelry business on social media that keeps me very busy.”

Her plans are to use the skills and experience gained through NPCC to one day expand her jewelry business into a larger boutique.

Thompson is the daughter of Mark and Hanna McConnell, of Hershey.

Thompson named NPCC Business Student of the Month

Native American dancer, singer, flute player and storyteller Garan Coons will perform for free for the public in McCook and North Platte Nov. 30.

Mid-Plains Community College’s Student Life Department will host Coons at 11 a.m. in the Weeth Theater on the McCook Campus and at 2 p.m. in the McDonald-Belton Theater on the South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Rd., in North Platte.

Coons is Oglala Lakota and Navajo. His is the founder of the Native American Many Moccasins Dance Troupe.

He tours around the world on a mission to educate the public about negative Native American stereotypes by using personal experiences, traditional songs and dance. He has performed in Germany, Denmark, Canada and Saudi Arabia among many other places.

Coons specializes in the art of Fancy Feather dancing - bringing history and tradition to life. His exquisite regalia and defined dance moves offer a magnificent educational experience for all ages.

Jacobson named Employee of the Quarter for Eagle Communications

Mid-Plains Community College Board of Governors member Cindy Duncan is the recipient of this year’s Nebraska Community College Association Governor’s Award.

Duncan, of Broken Bow, was recognized Sunday evening during the NCCA’s annual meeting in North Platte.&nbsp;Her selection was based on a variety of criteria, including service to MPCC, program development, leadership in helping to solve challenges affecting two-year postsecondary education and community involvement.

“I am completely humbled by this award,” Duncan said. “I have gained so much more from Mid-Plains and the Nebraska community college experience than I have or will ever give back. It is truly an honor to sit on the Mid-Plains Board.”

Duncan joined the MPCC Board of Governors in 2015. She began a five-year term as vice chair in 2019 and was reappointed to the position in January. Duncan currently serves on the board’s executive and legislative committees.

Her service on the MPCC Board of Governors has allowed Duncan to have an impact on community, state and global needs for skilled employees, particularly in applied technology. As an employee of BD, Duncan has watched the demand for middle-skill jobs surge.&nbsp;In response, she was part of a program that created a STEM lab to help businesses, educational platforms and the state fill the gap in applied tech jobs.&nbsp;

Duncan also used her influence on the MPCC Board of Governors to support expansion of the MPCC Broken Bow Campus shop and welding program.

Duncan has provided critical feedback in the development of new academic programs of study and was a major proponent of the implementation of MPCC’s Associate of Applied Science Degree in Agriculture with emphases in diesel and welding that began in the fall of 2022.

Additionally, Duncan was an integral part of the approval of men’s and women’s golf at North Platte Community College – an effort to increase student enrollment.

Over the years, she has led discussions about student safety, the expansion of the college’s Health and Science Center in North Platte and the redevelopment of the East Campus building for the advancement of program and community offerings in McCook.

As a mother of students who took advantage of dual credit through MPCC then transferred those credits to universities, Duncan understands the importance of early entry opportunities in the region.

Duncan is a proponent of offering unique experiences for students to become acquainted with MPCC. Fridays At the College is an example of that. The exploratory program is offered to local high school students to learn more about the institution’s applied technology programs.

She has been a strong voice in making sure that once students are enrolled at the college that they have the latest instructional technology tools and equipment available to prepare them for professional careers.

Through her employer, Duncan continues to advocate for financial contributions to provide additional opportunities for trainings at MPCC’s community campuses to better serve the entire 18-county service area.

Earlier this year, she testified at a legislative hearing regarding a dramatic shift in funding for community colleges, explaining that the shift to the originally proposed bill would have long-term and irreversible effects on technical education.

Duncan routinely attends Legislative Day in Lincoln as well as ACCT National Legislative Summits and ACCT Leadership Congress. She has addressed MPCC graduates during commencement ceremonies and offered DiSC® personality insight presentations for Millard Public Schools, Omaha law enforcement and parent teacher associations at the state level.&nbsp;

“Seeing the depth of influence the collective community college body has in the state of Nebraska is a remarkable example of what makes Nebraska and its community colleges special and some of the best in the nation,” Duncan said. “Now more than ever community colleges are needed. I know all the boards and their leadership will continue to be active participants in crucial conversations in making our students’ needs a reality. Being a board member for Mid-Plains is truly one of my greatest joys.”

Duncan is also extremely active in her hometown of Broken Bow. When COVID hit and businesses needed to be more creative and leverage intuitive growth mindset and human skill development skills, Duncan utilized her relationship with MPCC to host Leadership 360 sessions, comprehensive leadership assessments that mixed inner and outer aspects of leadership. The tool helped local leaders learn more about the dynamic world, while providing key insights about leadership that promoted action and ongoing development.

Duncan chaired the Broken Bow Public Schools All-District accreditation process and is actively involved with the Broken Bow Chamber of Commerce. She also chaired the Cattlemen’s Ball of Nebraska and the Nebraska One Box Pheasant Hunt, for which she served two five-year terms on the board.

She has dedicated additional time and energy to the following organizations:

Railroad crossings closed in Broken Bow

Kent Miller, of North Platte, has been recognized with a Friend of Community Colleges Award from the Nebraska Community College Association. He was honored Sunday night during the NCCA’s annual meeting in North Platte.

“It is an honor to be recognized as a ‘Friend of Community Colleges’ as that is what I am,” Miller said.

Miller is a 48-year veteran on the Mid-Plains Community College Board of Governors, which he joined at age 26.

A North Platte native, Miller graduated from North Platte High School in 1966. He obtained a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1971 and a Master of Science in Civil Engineering degree with a focus on structures and water from UNL in 1972.

Miller is a registered professional engineer in both Nebraska and Colorado.&nbsp;In 1973, he became the first manager of the Twin Platte Natural Resources District, which is still his title. It was around that time that he began thinking about doing some sort of public service. He chose education.

“Running for election&nbsp;for the MPCC Board of Governors was a natural choice,” said Miller. “I had watched the college become established, and I knew the value it provided for students and the community.”

He was elected to the first area wide MPCC Board of Governors in 1975. Previously, there had been separate boards for the Mid-Plains Vocational Technical College, North Platte&nbsp;Junior&nbsp;College and McCook&nbsp;Junior&nbsp;College.

“I thought the merger was good because merging brings efficiency in operation and costs,” Miller said. “That, in turn, allows for more opportunities.”

He served on the board from 1975-2007 and from 2009 to present, with the exception of a few times when he moved out of the district he was representing.

“I always came back because I like what community colleges represent,” said Miller. “We have continued to develop opportunities for education and economic prosperity of the area, and I like being part of that.”

The creation of extended campuses in Imperial, Ogallala, Broken Bow and Valentine and introduction of dual credit, online and distance learning courses are just some of the many changes he has witnessed over the years.

Miller took his experience to the state level in 1980 by serving as the MPCC Board of Governors representative for the NCCA. He was part of the NCCA from 1980-90, 1999-2003 and 2010 to present. He was president of the NCCA Board of Directors in 1983, 1984, 2002, 2013 and 2019.

Miller also served on the Board of Directors for the national Association of Community College Trustees from 1983-89 and 2014-20.

Miller was a founding member of the MPCC Foundation Board of Directors, serving as president from 1986-89. Additionally, he was appointed to Nebraska’s Coordinating Commission for Postsecondary Education in 1984 to represent community colleges until 1991 when the former commission was replaced by the&nbsp;<a>constitutional commission</a>.

He obtained a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1971 and a Master of Science in Civil Engineering degree with a focus on structures and water from UNL in 1972.Miller is a registered professional engineer in both Nebraska and Colorado.&nbsp;In 1973, he became the first manager of the Twin Platte Natural Resources District, which is still his title. It was around that time that he began thinking about doing some sort of public service. He chose education.“Running for election&nbsp;for the MPCC Board of Governors was a natural choice,” said Miller. “I had watched the college become established, and I knew the value it provided for students and the community.”He was elected to the first area wide MPCC Board of Governors in 1975. Previously, there had been separate boards for the Mid-Plains Vocational Technical College, North Platte&nbsp;Junior&nbsp;College and McCook&nbsp;Junior&nbsp;College.“I thought the merger was good because merging brings efficiency in operation and costs,” Miller said. “That, in turn, allows for more opportunities.”He served on the board from 1975-2007 and from 2009 to present, with the exception of a few times when he moved out of the district he was representing.“I always came back because I like what community colleges represent,” said Miller. “We have continued to develop opportunities for education and economic prosperity of the area, and I like being part of that.”The creation of extended campuses in Imperial, Ogallala, Broken Bow and Valentine and introduction of dual credit, online and distance learning courses are just some of the many changes he has witnessed over the years.Miller took his experience to the state level in 1980 by serving as the MPCC Board of Governors representative for the NCCA. He was part of the NCCA from 1980-90, 1999-2003 and 2010 to present. He was president of the NCCA Board of Directors in 1983, 1984, 2002, 2013 and 2019.Miller also served on the Board of Directors for the national Association of Community College Trustees from 1983-89 and 2014-20.Miller was a founding member of the MPCC Foundation Board of Directors, serving as president from 1986-89. Additionally, he was appointed to Nebraska’s Coordinating Commission for Postsecondary Education in 1984 to represent community colleges until 1991 when the former commission was replaced by the&nbsp;<a>constitutional commission</a>.

Millions of residents within underserved communities across Union Pacific’s network are poised to witness positive transformations through these grants. Union Pacific Awards Nearly $5.1 Million to 543 Organizations to Build Safe, Vibrant Communities

Daniel Manning and Olivia Guynan, both of North Platte, have been selected as North Platte Community College’s 2023 homecoming king and queen.

The students were crowned Saturday afternoon between the Knights women’s and men’s home basketball games against Eastern Wyoming College.

The public is invited to attend a free class about end-of-life planning Dec. 5 in Grant. The Mid-Plains Community College Ogallala Campus is offering the class, which will be from 5:30-8:30 p.m. in the commons area of Perkins County High School.

Jason Tickle, Tawna Holmstedt, Kevin Chavira, Michelle Ross, Dennis Demmel and Pam Abbott will lead the discussion, which will cover everything from funeral planning to legal work and how to leave a legacy.

Tickle is the owner and funeral director for Prairie Hills Funeral Home in Ogallala and Julesburg, Colo. and for Bullock-Long Funeral Home in Grant. In the workshop, he will talk about burial versus cremation, open versus closed caskets, organ donation, headstones, venues, music, scriptures, eulogies, photos, obituaries and other pre-planning topics.

Holmstedt is an attorney in the Law Office of R. Kevin O’Donnell, P.C., L.L.O. in Ogallala. She will explain legal documents such as a last will and testament, a revocable living trust, power of attorney, health care power of attorney, living wills and do-not-resuscitate orders.

Chavira is the market president, and Ross is the head teller at Pinnacle Bank in Grant. They will share their expertise about the importance of having financial papers in order. Those include the names of financial institutions, account numbers, beneficiaries, notification of beneficiaries and passwords.

Demmel is president of the Center for Rural Affairs board of directors while Abbott is chair of the Nebraska Community Foundation. They will speak about what it means to leave a legacy. They will also address values, labeling and gifting of tangible items, mentoring, leaving financial contributions to family members, charities and other organizations and the importance of transferring wealth.
