DECEMBER 8, 2023 (NORTH PLATTE, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— Investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested the former Dundy County Sheriff as part of an investigation into firearms missing from the sheriff’s office.

An inventory conducted by the sheriff’s office identified that four department-owned handguns were missing. This morning, NSP investigators served a search warrant at the residence of Clinton Smith, 42, of Benkelman, and located one of the four missing firearms.

Smith was arrested for theft by unlawful taking and possession of a stolen firearm. He was lodged in Dundy County Jail.

This investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with additional information that could assist in this investigation is asked to contact Nebraska Crime Stoppers. During the holidays the Nebraska Lottery will work to promote awareness about the risks of underage lottery play using social media and in-store signage.

Rockey noted that each ticket, whether Scratch or Lotto, carries the minimum age (19) reminder, and the same message appears on in-store signage. “No matter how clever or attractive a game may be, it should always be played in moderation and only be given to individuals who are of legal age to play,” said Rockey.

Nearly one in every five Nebraskans has some sort of unclaimed property, which could be financial accounts or items of value in which the owner has not initiated any activity for several years. When that happens the money or properties are submitted to the state. Common examples include unpaid life insurance benefits, forgotten bank accounts, and uncashed checks.

State maintenance forces will be performing a crack seal from reference post 84.05 to reference post 91.65, from Maywood to Curtis. The work is anticipated to take 15 days. Traffic will be maintained witha pilot car and flaggers. 

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and put phones down.

People are encouraged to donate lightly used coats of all sizes and colors. Donations can be placed in the big box located in the concession stand area of the McDonald-Belton Building.

The coat drive will conclude Dec. 16. All donated coats will be distributed to The Connection homeless shelter and the Rape/Domestic Abuse Program of North Platte.

North Platte Chamber & Development Corporation Selects White River Soy Processing to  Develop Oilseed Processing Plant 



A panel of head coaches from around the country selects the squad. A player first must be named all-region to be up for All-American status. Neff (North Platte) was first-team All-Central this fall with Ferguson (Lincoln SW) receiving honorable mention accolades.

Ferguson and Neff are the 30th and 31st All-Americans in UNK volleyball history. This is Neff's first such honor while Ferguson was a 2022 third-team pick playing for Northwest Missouri.I n the recently completed season, Ferguson led the&nbsp;Lopers&nbsp;in kills (328), was tied for the lead in service aces (35), ranked third in both kills per set (2.83) and blocks (75) and posted a .944 serve receiving percentage. Reaching the 1,000 career kill mark, she also hit .273, averaged 3.03 digs per set had 10 double doubles.

Neff had the same number of double doubles while directing an offense that hit .264 and averaged 14.2 kps. In her second year as a starter, she came in at 11.4 assists, 2.4 digs, 0.8 kills, 0.6 blocks and 0.3 aces per set. Hitting a team-best .308, Neff was the only&nbsp;Loper&nbsp;to appear in all 117 sets and is now up to 2,666 career assists.

UNK went 29-6 (16-4 MIAA), reaching the NCAA Tournament for a 24th&nbsp;consecutive year and posting a perfect 12-0 home record.

Right Side & Setter Tabbed by the AVCA, includes North Platte native Peyton Neff

&nbsp; On Wednesday 12/06/2023 @ 5:52 PM Scottsbluff Police responded to a traffic crash at the intersection of Hwy 26 and 5TH Ave. Investigation revealed that a red 2003 Infiniti G35 driven by Johnathan Dykes, age 44 of Douglas, Wyoming, was west bound making a left turn to go south on 5TH Ave. At the same time a silver 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Marco Martinez-Hernandez, age 29 of Terrytown, was east bound on Hwy 26 at 5TH Ave. 

The Chevrolet crashed into the side of the Infiniti as the Infiniti turned. A passenger in the Chevrolet was identified as Mario Martinez-Cano, age 29 of Terrytown. Both occupants of the Chevrolet had to be extricated from the vehicle. The passenger did not have a seat belt on. Marco and Mario were transported to Regional West Medical Center by Valley Ambulance. 

Dykes refused treatment at the scene. Valley Ambulance and Scottsbluff Fire Dept assisted at the scene. Citations are pending the completion of the investigation.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Scottsbluff Police Department responds two vehicle accident

The Alliance Police Department issued a statement on Wednesday afternoon about a lockdown at Alliance High School due to an incident at AHS.

APD received a report of a student with a gun at Alliance High School at 1:36 p.m. MT and the school immediately went into lockdown.

Alliance Police Officers with the assistance of Box Butte County Sheriff's Office Deputies made contact with the teenager and the student was placed into custody.

The weapon was recovered without incident and the entire situation remains under investigation.

NORTH PLATTE - This Sunday, is the Worldwide Candle Lighting for The Friends Compassionate Group as chapters will light off their candle at 7:00pm as the candles will stay lit for an hour in honor of a child who has passed away. The Compassionate Friends Group North Platte Chapter invites members from the public to arrive at the First Lutheran Church at 6:30pm to participate in the 7:00pm candle lighting event. Guests are asked to bring a candle, a picture if they choose too and the group ask guests if they can bring a votive candle.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Compassionate Friends Group is a worldwide group of people who have lost their children, grandchildren or lost someone and need folks to talk with. Members in this group meet once a month and will learn from one another. The group was founded over 50 years ago. NebraskaLand Bank Named Best Bank to Work For Five Years in a Row

KEARNEY – University of Nebraska at Kearney students continue to receive national recognition for their&nbsp;<a href="https://www.unk.edu/academics/communications/index.php">excellence in broadcasting</a>.

Lopers are finalists in seven categories for the 2023-24 Intercollegiate Broadcasting System Media Awards competition, which includes campus radio and television stations from across the country.

The sports broadcasting team for KLPR 91.1 FM received multiple nods, including best football play-by-play (Jon Willis of Omaha and Kade Mohr of North Platte), best sports update (“Loper Update” with Willis, Ethan McCormick of Bennington, Traeton Harimon of Bayard and Alex Hammeke of Ellinwood, Kansas) and best sports director (Willis).

Hammeke is also a finalist for best news promotion and Rhiannon Painter of Valentine, Seth Heikes of Bennington, Paige Steinman of Emerson and Morgan Semm of Dannebrog teamed up to create a best public service announcement nominee.

On the video side, recent UNK graduate Grace McDonald of Rockville is a finalist for best news report and “Talking UNK” featuring Logan Grose of Lawrence, Kansas, and the Video @ The Antelope production team received a nomination for best talk program.

The IBS Media Awards will be presented March 2 during the organization’s annual conference in New York City.

UNK students were also recognized during the recent International Student Broadcasting Championship, a global competition launched this year by Australia-based Ramp Media.

Harimon won the best sports play-by-play category with Hammeke as color commentator. Willis was also a finalist in that category with Alexis Sander of Gothenburg as color commentator.

The International Student Broadcasting Championship includes radio, podcast, video and digital content creation and e-sports broadcasting. It’s judged by industry professionals representing leading companies worldwide.

Update:&nbsp;Scotts Bluff County Attorney Dave Eubanks provided an update on Tuesday on the identity of the man that passed away on Friday night at the Scotts Bluff County Detention Center.

46-year-old David C. Roberts passed away Friday night after he was found unresponsive at the detention center. Foul play is not suspected, and his death is under investigation.

This week, Habitat for Humanity and the North Platte Rotary club are doing a match day with the Salvation Army. The Salvation Army is anywhere between 30-32% of their goal for the end of the campaign.

This Friday will be the community dinner. The free event is open to everyone who wants to enjoy a meal with the community. Turkey, mash potatoes are just a few of the items that will be available. Kiersten Black of Sidney certainly isn’t the only Nebraska teenager to hunt big game this fall. She has, however, harvested an animal in the state that none of the others can claim — a bighorn sheep.

Black, 15, shot the world-class trophy-caliber ram Saturday, Dec. 2, on private land in the Pine Ridge escarpments southwest of Chadron. She won the permit when her name was the only one drawn from a pool of 3,524 applicants in a lottery for Nebraska residents, which requires just a $29 application fee.

Black took to the field Saturday morning with father Trevor, younger brother Reed and family friend Tate Pieper.

They caught sight of the big ram with a group of ewes first thing that morning, but the sheep slipped into the trees and wasn’t spotted again until after about seven hours of searching the area and its steep canyons.

With her father’s coaching, Kiersten made a successful stalk and shot on the huge ram at sundown with just 25 minutes of legal shooting light to spare.

Todd Nordeen, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission research and disease program manager who oversees the state’s bighorn sheep program, said the ram was 10½ years old — in the final stages of an average lifespan of 9-12 years.

Kiersten has developed an impressive hunting resume at a young age. The first of the five deer she has harvested was a whitetail buck with antlers of 150 inches – a size considered a once-in-a-lifetime achievement for most deer hunters. Earlier this year she shot a big mule deer in Colorado.

The teen said the bighorn sheep hunt was a thrilling experience, including the moment she learned her name was drawn.

“I was just so excited. I couldn’t believe it,” she said.

Trevor said he entered Kiersten’s name in the drawing, but made sure she knew of the commitment beforehand.

“You know what you’re signing up for if you draw? She said, ‘Oh, yeah, that sounds like fun.’ And here we are.

“You’ll be one of the only people eating bighorn sheep for Christmas dinner this year,” the father told his daughter as they sat near the ram.

Kiersten is a sophomore at Sidney High School. As a convenient coincidence, her Sidney Red Raider basketball team played at Chadron on the eve of the hunt. Had it been any other location, she surely would have sacrificed basketball for the once-in-a-lifetime hunt.

Kiersten’s harvest closes Nebraska’s 2023 season for bighorn sheep, in which just two permits were issued. The other hunter, who won his permit by auction, shot an impressive ram in the Wildcat Hills of Banner County earlier in the week.

The sheep mark the 33rd and 34th harvested in Nebraska since the Game and Parks’ hunting program began in 1998. Kiersten is just the second female and second teenager to harvest one in the state.

The number of Nebraska bighorn sheep permits available each year is based on the state’s population of the species, especially mature rams, as determined during monitoring by Game and Parks staff. To date, permits have been limited to one or two hunters in most years, with several years not permitting any harvests.

Nebraska has developed a reputation for producing trophy-caliber rams for those fortunate to win a permit. Not only do the hunts provide a rare experience and uncommon table fare, they have been vital to bighorn sheep conservation in Nebraska. About $2.5 million has been raised through the lottery applications and auctions to fund research and reintroduction efforts of the species.

Permit winners are assisted by Game and Parks staff and treated to meals and lodging at Fort Robinson State Park.

Nebraska’s reintroduction efforts for bighorn sheep began in the 1980s, an attempt to remedy the unregulated hunting, habitat loss and disease that led to their extirpation from the state in the late 1800s. Nebraska’s population of bighorns stands at approximately more than 250 rams, ewes and lambs in both the Wildcat Hills and Pine Ridge.

Sidney teen bags trophy bighorn

Acting United States Attorney Susan Lehr announced that Jonathan Beale, 23, of Lexington, Nebraska, was sentenced November 20, 2023, in federal court in Lincoln, Nebraska for conspiracy to distribute and possession with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of methamphetamine. 

The Honorable John M. Gerrard, Senior United States District Judge, sentenced Beale to 120 months’ imprisonment. There is no parole in the federal system. After Beale’s release from prison, he will begin a 5-year term of supervised release.

Operating from at least June 2021 until October 2022, Beale and others were responsible for trafficking in meth brought into the state. Officers from a variety of local, state, and federal agencies pieced the conspiracy together using eyewitness information, electronic evidence, surveillance, and search warrants.

On February 23, 2022, officers obtained a search warrant for Beale’s residence in Lexington. Located in the search was another co-defendant, who appeared to be living in Beale’s basement. In addition, the search located nearly eleven ounces of meth, items consistent with narcotic packaging, and over two thousand dollars. Searches at additional locations in the Lexington area netted additional meth and currency from other co-defendants.&nbsp;

This case was investigated by the CODE Drug Task Force, Lexington Police Department, Dawson County Sheriff’s Office, the Nebraska State Patrol, &nbsp;&nbsp;the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Lexington Man Sentenced to Ten Years in Prison for Role in Methamphetamine Conspiracy

Henning will be joining the Cross Country team. USD head coach Nolan Fife was announced as the Summits League Women's Cross County Coach of the Year. Fife is only his second year with the program.

WASHINGTON, D.C. –&nbsp;Today, U.S. Senator Pete Ricketts announced his constituent casework team has held Mobile Office Hours in all 93 Nebraska counties. Ricketts is also launching a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ricketts.senate.gov/mobileofficehours/">new website feature</a>&nbsp;that allows Nebraskans to request a Mobile Office Hours event in their county, city, or town.

“I’m proud the Mobile Office Hours program has provided Nebraskans in all 93 counties a chance to meet with our team in locations where we don’t have a permanent office,”&nbsp;said Senator Ricketts. “When the federal government fails to fulfill essential services, our constituent casework staff is here to help. I promised to ensure taxpayers would receive the kind of effective and responsive service they deserve from my team. Mobile Office Hours is one way we are fulfilling that commitment, and we look forward to continuing the events next year.”

At Mobile Office Hours, Ricketts’ staff are on-site to assist Nebraskans with their casework needs. If Nebraskans can’t get an answer from the federal bureaucracy in a timely manner or feel they have been treated unfairly, Ricketts and his staff may be able to help resolve the issue or help them contact the correct officials.

For example, a Nebraska veteran who attended our Adams County Mobile Office Hours needed assistance appealing his Department of Veterans Affairs disability rating. After meeting with our team, we were able to connect him with three different Service Officers who could help. Our office tracked the progress of his case and ensured he was able to successfully appeal his rating to get the benefits he needed.

After meeting with our team, we were able to connect him with three different Service Officers who could help. If Nebraskans can’t get an answer from a federal agency in a timely fashion, or if they feel they have been treated unfairly, Ricketts and his staff may be able to help resolve a problem or get information Nebraskans need.Ricketts has staff specially trained and located in offices throughout the state to assist any individual or group with a concern, complaint, or question of eligibility or benefit as it relates to a federal agency. Ricketts staff can act as a liaison for Nebraskans that have an issue pending before a federal agency. While the office cannot guarantee a favorable outcome, staff will do their best to help Nebraskans receive a fair and timely response to their problem. Common issues include, but are not limited to, passport and visa assistance, IRS and tax return issues, military assistance, FEMA disaster relief, and benefits from Veterans Affairs, Social Security, and Medicare.Nebraskans can receive assistance via phone and email, or at any of the offices located throughout the state.
