At approximately 8:03 PM, the North Platte 911 Center received a report of a person being shot at a residence in the 300 block of S. Silber.&nbsp; The suspect was reportedly outside of the house with a handgun.&nbsp; The suspect left the house in a vehicle and was spotted by law enforcement a short time later.&nbsp; Near B St. and Lincoln Ave, the male suspect exited his vehicle and fired several shots at law enforcement.&nbsp; The suspect fled in his vehicle and was pursued.&nbsp; The suspect has wrecked his vehicle north of North Platte.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The shooting victim on S. Silber suffered injuries that were not life threatening.

Additional details will be released as the investigation continues.

The North Platte Police Department in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA), is participating in the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” DUI enforcement campaign.&nbsp; 

Drivers will see officers working on a special high-visibility enforcement campaign to spread the message about the dangers of drunk driving from December 15, 2023, through January 1, 2024.&nbsp; Their primary focus will be on taking impaired drivers off the road.&nbsp;

According to NHTSA, during the 2017-2021 December months, more than 4,500 people were killed in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes nationwide.&nbsp; Added parties and festivities during the Holiday season bring out more impaired drivers. &nbsp; 

NHTSA and the North Platte Police Department ask drivers to make a plan before taking part in festivities by designating a sober driver or using ride share.

There are more than 400 services in the new price estimator, presenting patients with&nbsp; estimates of out-of-pocket expenses based on services and health insurance coverage.&nbsp;

"This price estimator gives patients more control over their care, and leverages&nbsp; technology to help patients understand health care costs,” said Ivan Mitchell, Great&nbsp; Plains Health Chief Executive Officer. “Seeking health care services can be stressful.&nbsp; We want to eliminate some of that stress by providing patients with another tool to explore information on costs.”&nbsp;

With the click of a button, My Chart also allows patients to securely communicate with providers, access test results and health records, request prescription refills, manage appointments and more. Great Plains Health launches price estimator tool

Lincoln, Nebraska, Dec. 11, 2023 —&nbsp;The 2023 Nebraska Cattlemen Annual Convention and Trade Show honored Scottsbluff cattleman Ivan Rush with the "Friend of the Nebraska Cattlemen Foundation Award" on Dec. 7. For a man who prides himself on knowing what’s going on around him, "I was absolutely surprised. When they were ready to give the next award, I thought they had the wrong slide (on the screen). I was actually quite surprised," said Rush.

Rush has been in agriculture all his life, having grown up on a small grain, beef, and dairy operation in Missouri. He was the Beef Extension Specialist at the UNL Panhandle Research Extension and Education Center and has presented at countless cattlemen’s events ranging from local, area and regional to national and international in their scope.

He was one of the original organizers of the Range Beef Cow Symposium (RBCS), a respected production-level beef cow/calf educational meeting. The first one was held in Chadron in 1969. Rush was on the committee to organize the Symposium, served on the planning committees, and continues to contribute through his retirement years.

He retired from the UNL Panhandle Research Extension and Education Center in 2008 and remained active in the beef industry. Rush became part of the Nebraska Cattlemen.

"I was enthused to be part of the Nebraska Cattlemen, supporting youth scholarships and judging," he said. "It wasn’t easy to start the scholarships, but with support from the cattle producers and the industry, we are successfully seeing youth get scholarships."

The Nebraska Cattlemen’s work aligns with Rush’s to see beef kept in a positive light. "We know people love beef. We continue to get education out there and make it profitable for the cow-calf producers." He added how they also fund projects like, the "Ag Sack Lunch Program of Nebraska," "Nebraska Youth Beef Leadership Symposium (NYBLS)," and Nebraska Agriculture in the Classroom.

Rush has served as the chair of the Cattlemen’s Ball of Nebraska committee and is thrilled the Ball will be in the Panhandle in June 2024. The Ball’s goal is to raise funds for cancer research, something Rush said his family has a personal stake in.

"Doris (wife) is recovering from cancer. We were fortunate to get her to the Buffett Center (Nebraska Medicine Fred and Pamela Buffett Cancer Center). I’m so thankful she’s healthy and living an active life again." Millions of dollars have been donated to the UNL Medical Center through the Cattlemen’s Ball.

"I’m very honored to receive the award. My career has been wonderful and enjoyable. I’ve learned a lot from the cattlemen and women I’ve met and will continue to do what I can to help the cattle industry."&nbsp;&nbsp;

Scottsbluff cattleman receives award for commitment to beef industry

OMAHA, NEB. - The University of Nebraska at Omaha will be hosting graduation this Friday at Baxter Arena. UNO will host two different ceremonies during the day. The 9:00am ceremony will feature College Arts and Sciences, College of Education, Health and Human Services and College of Engineering (UNL).&nbsp;

The second ceremony starts at 2:00pm and will feature College of Business Administration, College of Public Affairs and Community Service, College of Information Science &amp; Technology and College of Communication, Fine Arts and Media.

(Lexington, Neb.)&nbsp;– Dawson Public Power District reports that the 2023 irrigation season was the second highest revenue year in the past decade. That was noted at Dawson PPD’s Board of Directors meeting held December 6.

Irrigation revenue is at $26.6 million compared to $29 million in 2022. Customers used about 179.5 million kilowatt hours of electricity over the 2023 growing season compared to 215.8 million kWh in 2022. Dawson PPD’s net margin is currently $4.3 million over budget through October 31, however, present mild temperatures may reduce the net margin by year end.

“We expect to finish the year strong,” said Carmen Ackerman, Dawson PPD Manager of Finance and Administration.

As a not-for-profit, publicly owned electric utility, Dawson PPD reinvests its revenue into its electric grid to provide safe, reliable and affordable power to its customers. The excess funds will be used to fulfill the District’s mission and help finance 2024 construction projects.

Many respiratory illnesses go around in the fall and winter in southwest Nebraska. During the month of November, cases of RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) and COVID-19 spiked, with an average of 30 to 60 cases of COVID per week reported to Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD). 

Flu (influenza) rates were still low. Colds, flu, RSV, and COVID-19 can all have similar symptoms so it can be very challenging to know when it is serious or when to get medical care. For those more at risk of getting very sick, it is important to get tested so the right treatments can be given.&nbsp;

COLDS: Mild illness with symptoms usually starting 1 to 3 days after exposure. Symptoms include cough, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, watery eyes, and sneezing.&nbsp; Colds may last up to 10 days. Younger children are more likely to have colds, often 3 or more per season. There is no vaccine or treatment that can combat a cold, though rest and over-the-counter medicines can help with symptoms.&nbsp;

INFLUENZA (flu): Mild to severe illness with symptoms usually starting 2 to 4 days after exposure. Symptoms come on suddenly and include fever (not everyone will experience a fever), chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, and fatigue (tiredness). Some people have stomach issues, though this is more common in children. Symptoms may last 5 to 7 days with a shorter time for people who got a flu shot.&nbsp; Flu shots are available every year and help decrease the severity of symptoms as well as how long it lasts. Influenza is treatable with antiviral medication if identified within 48 hours after symptoms start, so check with your medical provider.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Symptoms of RSV in children are fever, runny nose, loss of appetite, coughing, sneezing, and wheezing. If you get COVID-19 and are at risk of getting very sick, treatments are available that can reduce your chances of needing to be hospitalized, so check with your medical provider or local pharmacy. COVID-19 vaccines are available that help decrease the severity of the symptoms as well as how long symptoms will last.&nbsp;

As with any illness, seek immediate medical attention if you or someone else is having trouble breathing, chest pain or pressure that is not going away, confusion, trouble waking up or staying awake, bluish lips or face, or an uncontrolled fever after taking fever reducing medication.&nbsp;&nbsp;

 Fever and Cough – When is it serious? 

LINCOLN, Neb. -&nbsp;The No. 1 Nebraska volleyball team advanced to the NCAA Semifinals with a hard-fought 3-1 victory over third-seeded Arkansas Saturday evening in front of 8,713 fans at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

Nebraska erased a late five-point deficit to rally and win set one, 26-24. The Huskers then cruised to a 25-14 victory in set two but Arkansas (28-6) battled over the next two sets. The Razorbacks won set three, 25-21, handing the Huskers their first set loss of the NCAA Tournament. Arkansas then led 19-17 in set four before NU rallied for a 25-23 victory.

Nebraska (32-1) will head to the NCAA Semifinals for the 17th time in program history and the sixth time in the last nine years. The Huskers will face No. 4 Pittsburgh on Thursday at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Fla. The match is set for 6:00 pm CST, followed by Wisconsin vs. Texas.

The Huskers, who finished 21-0 at home this season, hit just .194 in the match, but Nebraska held Arkansas to a .100 attack percentage. The Huskers had the advantage in kills (57-47), blocks (17-9) and digs (78-62), but the Razorbacks served up eight aces while Nebraska's lone ace came on the first point of the match.

Merritt Beason, the NCAA Lincoln Regional Most Outstanding Player, finished with a match-high 19 kills. She recorded a double-double by adding 11 digs and nearly posted a triple-double after finishing with eight blocks, tying her career high. Harper Murray had 15 kills and 12 digs for the Big Red. Bergen Reilly also had a double-double with 40 assists and 16 digs.

Defensively, Bekka Allick had a career-high 12 blocks. Her 12 stuffs were the most ever by a Husker in an NCAA Tournament match during the rally-scoring era and were just one shy of the program record for any postseason match. Lexi Rodriguez had a match-high 20 digs to lead the Nebraska floor defense, as five Huskers finished with double-digit digs.

Beason terminated a kill for the Huskers' first lead since 2-1 and set point, 24-23. An Arkansas kill tied it 24-24, but Beason once again put down a kill to earn a second chance at set point. The Razorbacks answered with a 4-1 run to win the set, 25-21.&nbsp;

Reilly and Allick had a block in that run, and Reilly dumped a kill. A kill by Murray put the Huskers ahead 14-10, but two straight hitting errors and a net violation allowed the Razorbacks within 14-13. Arkansas tied the score at 16-16, but Beason hit off the block and out to put NU back on top. But a service error and hitting error put Arkansas in front, 18-17, and an ace made it 19-17 Arkansas. Batenhorst terminated after a timeout, and a kill by Beason tied the score at 19-19. Arkansas regained a 20-19 lead but the committed a service error and attacking error to give the Huskers a 21-20 lead. Gillen answered with a kill, but the Huskers won the next three points on a pair of blocks and a third Arkansas attack error. The Razorbacks then fought off two match points before a service error sent Nebraska into the NCAA Semifinals.

LINCOLN, Neb. -&nbsp;The No. 1 Nebraska volleyball team advanced to the NCAA Semifinals with a hard-fought 3-1 victory over third-seeded Arkansas Saturday evening in front of 8,713 fans at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.<figure>

Arkansas then led 19-17 in set four before NU rallied for a 25-23 victory.Nebraska (32-1) will head to the NCAA Semifinals for the 17th time in program history and the sixth time in the last nine years. The Huskers will face No. 4 Pittsburgh on Thursday at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Fla. The match is set for 6:00 pm CST, followed by Wisconsin vs. Texas.The Huskers, who finished 21-0 at home this season, hit just .194 in the match, but Nebraska held Arkansas to a .100 attack percentage. The Huskers had the advantage in kills (57-47), blocks (17-9) and digs (78-62), but the Razorbacks served up eight aces while Nebraska's lone ace came on the first point of the match.Merritt Beason, the NCAA Lincoln Regional Most Outstanding Player, finished with a match-high 19 kills. U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Nebraska

Acting United States Attorney Susan Lehr announced that Christopher P. Twohig, 45, of Cozad, Nebraska, was sentenced on December 1, 2023, in federal court in Lincoln, Nebraska for possession with intent to distribute 5 grams or more methamphetamine (actual) and carrying a firearm during and in relation to a drug trafficking crime. Senior United States District Judge John M. Gerrard sentenced Twohig to 120 months’ imprisonment. There is no parole in the federal system. After Twohig’s release from prison, he will begin a 5-year term of supervised release.

On March 22, 2023, officers in Cozad, Nebraska, attempted to arrest Twohig on a state arrest warrant.&nbsp; Twohig was located and apprehended in a parking lot at a convenience store.&nbsp; Approximately 47 grams of meth was found in Twohig’s coat, along with multiple empty baggies.&nbsp; A firearm was also found in his vehicle with over 100 rounds of ammunition.&nbsp; The suspected meth was sent to the lab, and the lab determined that there was about 45.24 grams of meth, of which at least 41 grams was actual meth.

This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Nebraska State Patrol, and Dawson County Sheriff’s Office.

Cozad Man Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison for Methamphetamine and Gun Charges

Jamie Tobey, of North Platte, has been named the December Business Student of the Month at North Platte Community College.

“Jamie consistently demonstrates a passion for learning,” said Jimi Cole, the business instructor who nominated Jamie for the recognition. “She exhibits exceptional work ethic, goes above and beyond on every assignment and is always prepared. It has been a pleasure working with her.”&nbsp;

Tobey graduated from Maxwell High School in 2022 and is currently studying business administration at NPCC. She chose the college because it’s close to home and flexible.

“The instructors have all been very genuine,” Tobey said. “They have been helpful and really had my best interest in mind.”

Tobey is on track to graduate in the spring. When not in the classroom, she is involved with the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and The National Society of Leadership and Success.

Outside of college, she enjoys traveling to new places, going to the gym and spending time with family and friends.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - Communty member are gearing up for a fundraiser event involving Christmas caroling to raise funds to purchase 6 sewing machines to send to Kenya. The group is looking to raise $1,400 to purchase the 6 machines with. The machines will be used to create new uniforms for school children who attend Overcoming Faith Schools. The school has over 900 students.&nbsp;

The group will be caroling from 6:00pm - 9:00pm on December 22nd in North Platte. The club says for a suggested $50 donation, you can have the carolers come to your home or send the group to someone else's home. If you would like to donate, you can send checks to North Platte Rotary PO Box 2313, North Platte, NE 69103.
