The ceremony will be held at 10:00 a.m. in the Rotunda of the Capitol, 1445 K. Street, in Lincoln.

Remarks will be provided by Governor Jim Pillen, Attorney General Mike Hilgers, and Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. The recruits will receive their badges and take the oath of office, which will be administered by Secretary of State Robert Evnen.

Following graduation, the recruits will begin their careers at Nebraska State Troopers, serving in a variety of communities across the state.

Nebraska State Patrol 68th Basic Recruit Camp to Graduate Friday

At approximately 10:27 AM, police officers responded to a report of gunshots in the 700 block of west 8th St.&nbsp; Upon arrival, the officers located five 9mm casings at the scene.&nbsp; An unoccupied van parked nearby appeared to have been struck by two of the 9mm rounds.&nbsp; An occupied home was in the line of site of the shooter.&nbsp; Witnesses reported a male subject knocked on the door of a nearby house before the shots were fired.&nbsp; The van is owned by the resident of the home.&nbsp; The suspect walked about two blocks after the shooting and entered a home located in the 700 block of west 10th St.

Officers contacted the residents of the home the suspect entered after the shooting.&nbsp; The officers located a man matching the description of the suspect and took 20-year-old Kage J. Anthony into custody.&nbsp; A 9mm semi-automatic pistol was located and later found to have been stolen during a 2021 burglary.&nbsp; Anthony did not wish to add any clarity to the event.&nbsp; Police learned that the victim and suspect were familiar with each other.

Anthony was arrested for discharging a firearm at a person, building or vehicle; possession of a stolen firearm; and use of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

&nbsp; County wide page for structure fire in Ogallala city limits. Agency responded with command, engine31, Rescue1, and Tower50. KC EMS responded with MAC60, MAC1, and MAC3. KCEM Kling responded to provide support resources (Red Cross) for affected residents. Paxton cancelled enroute. KLFD engine cancelled enroute. Brule FD responded with command and engine. OPD responded for traffic/scene control. 

OVFD FF entered and extinguished the basement fire in approx 15 minutes. Salvage, overhaul and extension/hot spot search took approximately an hour. EMS evaluated occupants but did not transport. Ne SFM investigating incident. No smoke detectors were sounding inside the structure. No civilian or FF injuries reported to command. Structure currently not habitable.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dunkin’ Unveils Newly Remodeled Next Generation Restaurant of the Future in North Platte, NE   

Mid-Plains Community College nursing students spent Wednesday wrapping gifts for the North Platte Police Department’s Santa Cop program.

The program provides Christmas presents to children in need who are identified through The Salvation Army of North Platte. The nursing students have helped wrap the gifts every year since the program’s inception in 1985.

The police department is responsible for organizing the event and distributing the gifts. A total of 86 children in Lincoln County will benefit from the program this year.

Post News Director Canon Rath chatted with Prairie Arts Center Executive Holly Carlini about what's going on at the Prairie Arts Center. The duo chatted about the Statewide Holiday Passport, ladies night out and classes the PAC is offering.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - &nbsp;The 2023 Holiday Passport is officially underway and the PAC is one of 20 attractions on this years passport. All four floors at the PAC is full decked out in holiday decorations and will be on display until January 7th. The floors are decorated in different themes.&nbsp;

Ladies night out is going on tomorrow in downtown North Platte and the PAC will be providing games and activities. This years theme is Willy Wonka. Even thought you have to sign up, for folks who did not get signed up are still invited to come shop and check out the discounts.&nbsp;

Lastly, the PAC is offering different classes for anyone to enjoy. A fun one going on tomorrow is a beer tasting with Pal's Brewing Company and you get to paint with beer. Ogallala BBB post-game interview with Ogallala assistant coach Jeremy Smith vs NPSP (12/12)

KEARNEY, NEB. - Ten farmers, ranchers, and agribusiness professionals from across Nebraska have been selected for Nebraska Farm Bureau’s (NEFB) 2024 Leadership Academy.&nbsp;They will begin a year-long program starting Feb. 15-16 in Kearney.

“The goal of leadership academy is to equip the future leaders of Farm Bureau with the tools they need to successfully advocate for agriculture, connect with members and embody the grassroots mission.&nbsp;The opportunities to serve in leadership roles in Farm Bureau and our state are vast and Leadership Academy provides participants the opportunity to develop the skills needed to step into those roles&nbsp;and positively impact their local communities,” said Audrey Schipporeit, NEFB’s director of generational engagement and facilitator of the 2024 Leadership Academy.

Academy members will participate in sessions&nbsp;<a>focused on leadership development, understanding the county, state, and national structure of Farm Bureau and its grassroots network, policy work on agricultural issues, and the importance of agricultural literacy. The group will also travel to the Capitols in Lincoln and Washington, D.C. to visit with elected officials and agenc</a>y representatives.

“We congratulate this group of diverse individuals and are excited to support their passion, ambition, and dedication to agriculture. We can't wait to see the positive impact they will have on their communities, state, and world,”&nbsp;said Schipporeit.

The 2024 Nebraska Farm Bureau Leadership Academy members are:

James McArtor, a member of Keith County Farm Bureau, graduated from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln with a bachelor’s degree in Mechanized Systems Management-Production Option and a minor in the Engler Agribusiness Entrepreneurship Program. He works with his father as an owner/operator of McArtor Family Farms near Grant, where they farm in Perkins County. James is a partner of McArtor Trucking, LLC, and contracts with local COOPs to transport grain primarily during the winter season. He additionally hires out as a custom sprayer applicator to area farmers.

Robert Stuart is a member of Dawson County Farm Bureau and a fifth-generation farmer from Lexington. The Stuart family has been farming the same land since 1888. Robert is married to Megan Stuart, and they have two children, Harrison age four and Eleanor age two. Robert grows corn and soybeans with his parents and brother and operates a small-scale feedlot.

Clade Anderson, a member of Sherman/Valley County Farm Bureau, lives near Ord. He grew up on a diversified farm in central Kansas and attended&nbsp;Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture (NCTA) earning an associate degree in agronomy before continuing his education at Fort Hayes State university earning bachelor's degrees in agronomy and agricultural business.&nbsp;Clade is currently employed as a sales agronomist for Country Partners Cooperative.

Sam Gifford is a member of the Lancaster County Farm Bureau and now resides in Kearney. He graduated from the University of Nebraska - Lincoln with a bachelor's degree in Agricultural Economics and is currently attending the University of Nebraska - Kearney pursuing his master’s in business administration while working as an agribusiness professional. He was born and raised in the Cornhusker State and has a passion for agriculture that stems from his third-generation family farm and ranch. In his free time, Sam enjoys working on the ranch, golfing, and cheering on the Huskers.

Katie Nolles, a member of Boyd County Farm Bureau, is a sixth-generation rancher and an agricultural education teacher. She graduated from the University of Nebraska - Lincoln with a degree in Agricultural Education and will graduate with her master’s degree in School Counseling from Chadron State College in May of 2024. Katie enjoys raising cattle alongside her family on the ranch where they have a Hereford seedstock and commercial recip operation. In her spare time, Katie enjoys being involved in her church, judging livestock shows, and reading.

Christopher Kuehn is a member of Kearney/Franklin County Farm Bureau and is a fourth generation farmer and rancher. He runs his operation with his father, where they raise mostly irrigated corn, soybeans, and wheat along with a calving herd of about 200 Hereford cows. Christopher has served as president of the County Farm Bureau board for 10 years.&nbsp; He is also very active as an elder in his church, in the community on the County Extension board, and is a director with the Nebraska Association of County Extension Boards. Chris and his wife Tessa raised their two children across the road from the original Kuehn homestead near Heartwell, Nebraska.

Daniel Kristensen, a member of Kearney/Franklin County Farm Bureau, has been involved in agriculture his entire life. He is a fourth-generation corn and soybean farmer that just finished his tenth year managing his family's operation. He has developed leadership skills by being involved with Franklin/Kearney County Corn Growers, Franklin/Kearney County Cattleman's Association, and other agricultural affiliated organizations. Besides farming, Daniel enjoys politics and agricultural economics as well as coaching junior high basketball for Minden Public Schools.

Jordon Harms is a member of Clay County Farm Bureau and is a fourth-generation farmer near Glenvil. He’s passionate about technology and isn’t afraid to bring new ideas and strategies to his family’s operation. Jordon also sells seed for Beck’s Hybrids which allows him to share the latest seed and agronomy advancements with his customers. Off the farm, Jordon enjoys spending time with his family and friends and drumming on the praise team at church.

Chris Popken, a member of Dodge County Farm Bureau, lives near Hooper. Chris graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a Mechanical Engineering degree and went on to work for Deere &amp; Co in Nebraska and Eastern Washington in a variety of roles. Chris moved back to Nebraska when an opportunity to start farming arose. He raises corn and soybeans, has a Channel Seedsman dealership, and tunes off-highway equipment. Chris enjoys spending time traveling with his wife Nichole and passing along his love for farming to his three daughters.

Kellie Kennedy is a member of Nemaha County Farm Bureau and is a fifth-generation farmer with her husband Steve near Nemaha.&nbsp; Along with her husband and son, they operate a rotational row crop farm of soybeans, yellow and white corn, and alfalfa, plus raise a cow/calf herd and background heifers.&nbsp; Kellie and her daughter also raise pumpkins and other fall produce for retail sale.&nbsp; She is involved with her community in various causes and is a grandmother of six. Kellie currently holds the position of the OA/PKR of the Nemaha County Farm Bureau.

Bob Lantis named next NEBRASKAland Days Executive Director

UNMC will honor the inaugural director of the new White House Office of Pandemic Preparedness and Response Policy Dec. 15 at its Winter Commencement Ceremony. Degrees will be conferred upon approximately 400 students at the 7 p.m. ceremony at the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Baxter Arena.

Maj. Gen. (ret.) Paul Friedrichs, MD, will be awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree for high distinction in his service to our nation through the areas of science and medicine.

Dr. Friedrichs currently serves as Deputy Assistant to the President in addition to his role as pandemic preparedness and response policy director. He is tasked with advising the President and coordinating federal government efforts to enhance the United States and its partners’ ability to prepare for and respond to pandemics and other emergency biologic events.

He previously served as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Global Health Security and Biodefense at the White House National Security Council.

This followed a decades-long career in the U.S. Air Force which culminated in serving as the Joint Staff Surgeon at the Pentagon. Dr. Friedrichs provided medical advice for the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on Department of Defense (DOD) operations and served as medical advisor to the DOD COVID-19 Task Force. In this role he coordinated all issues related to health services to include operational medicine, force health protection and readiness among the combatant commands, the Office of the Secretary of Defense and the services. He also served as U.S. representative to the NATO Committee of the Chiefs of Military Medical Services.

Dr. Friedrichs is an expert on major domestic and international responses to natural disasters and biologic outbreaks, on global health diplomacy, and on health systems. As a clinician, he has cared for patients in combat and under austere conditions, including in Antarctica.

Dr. Friedrichs is an alumnus of Tulane University and of the National War College. He earned his MD from the Uniformed Services University and has earned numerous honors and medals, including the Bronze Star.

Dr. Friedrichs will conduct a Breakthrough Thinking Conference presentation entitled “Rethinking Biopreparedness” at the medical center earlier in the day on Dec. 15.

Yuri Cole Wins Kawasaki Mule

NORTH PLATTE, Nebraska (Dec. 12, 2023) – This holiday season, UScellular will give back to the local community by donating needed items to the North Platte Public Schools Foundation. With its “Gift of Connection” program, UScellular donated $5,000 worth of musical instruments to support the North Platte Public Schools Foundation’s mission to enhance educational opportunities for the community’s public-school students.    

The Tuesday morning donation at Madison Middle School included alto saxophones, flutes and general music supplies. 

“The North Platte Public Schools Foundation does so much for the community, so we want to help them deliver the much-needed support they provide with a donation of musical equipment,” said Eric Puryear, UScellular’s area sales manager for Nebraska and western Iowa. “At UScellular, we strive to unleash the power of our communities and are excited to help connect people to what matters most this holiday season.”

UScellular Supports North Platte Public Schools Foundation with Music

At approximately 8:03 PM, on December 11th, 2023, the North Platte 911 Center received two reports of a shooting at a residence located in the 300 block of S. Silber.&nbsp; The suspect was reportedly outside of the house with a handgun and left in a vehicle, with another person, prior to police arrival.&nbsp; North Platte police officers and North Platte rescue were dispatched to the residence and a description of the suspect’s vehicle was broadcast to all Lincoln County law enforcement agencies.&nbsp; 

Shortly after the broadcast, a Lincoln County deputy sheriff located the suspect’s vehicle and initiated a traffic stop.&nbsp; The suspect fled and eventually came to a stop in the 300 block of W. B St.&nbsp; The suspect exited his vehicle with a handgun, reportedly fired the gun at the deputy, and the deputy returned fire. &nbsp; After an exchange of gun fire, the suspect fled westbound on B St. in his vehicle.&nbsp; The deputy resumed his pursuit of the suspect until he came to a stop at a residence located in the 1100 block of W. B St.&nbsp; It was later determined that the residence on W. B St. was the suspect’s home.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The pursuing deputy received assistance from members of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Nebraska State Patrol, and the North Platte Police Department.&nbsp; The suspect shot several times at the law enforcement officers before fleeing in another vehicle.&nbsp; The officers experienced visibility issues with the suspect and there were no gunshots fired by law enforcement officers on W. B St.

Officers pursued the suspect as he fled from the 1100 block of W. B St. in a different vehicle.&nbsp; Officers temporarily lost sight of the fleeing suspect, but a trooper with the Nebraska State Patrol located the suspect vehicle in the 200 block of W. Leota.&nbsp; The trooper made a U-turn and followed the vehicle as the suspect came to a stop at the traffic light at Leota and Jeffers.&nbsp; At that location, the suspect reportedly shot at the trooper who returned gunfire.&nbsp; The suspect fled and was pursued north on HW83 leaving North Platte.&nbsp; Additional gunshots were fired during the pursuit.

The suspect came to a stop after leaving the roadway near mile marker 94.5 on HW83.&nbsp; Due to safety concerns, a drone pilot from the North Platte Police Department was sent to the scene.&nbsp; Using the drone, the officers determined that there was one person in the vehicle who appeared injured and a firearm was not visible.&nbsp; Officers made a tactical approach, removed the suspect from the vehicle and transported him to an awaiting ambulance.&nbsp; A .22 caliber semi-automatic pistol was found in the suspect’s vehicle.

The suspect was identified as 38-year-old Brandon R Girkin Sr.&nbsp; He was transported to Great Plains Health, with at least two gunshot wounds, and later transferred to a Lincoln area hospital for a higher level of care.&nbsp; Girkin was last known to be in critical but stable condition.

The victim in the initial shooting in the 300 block of S. Silber was a 12-year-old boy.&nbsp; He was taken to Great Plains Health where he was treated and released.

When the suspect stopped in the 300 block of W. B St. and exchanged gunfire with the deputy sheriff, the suspect’s 14-year-old son was in the vehicle with him.&nbsp; His son was not injured.

No law enforcement officers were injured.

The North Platte Police Department is the lead investigating agency and has received full cooperation and assistance from the Nebraska State Patrol and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.

The investigation involved a moving crime scene and will take a considerable amount of time to complete.&nbsp; Once the investigation has been completed, the case will be referred to the Lincoln County Attorney’s Office for prosecution.

The Ogallala Indians girl's and boy's teams are making a trip east tonight to take on the North Platte St. Patricks. The girls are 3-1 on the season and will take on a 1-4 St. Pats team. The boy's matchup features the #4 team in C-1, the Indians taking on the #2 in D-1, St. Pats.

Tip off for the girl's game is set to tip off at 5:00pm MT/6:00pm CT with the boy to follow roughly 20 minutes after the conclusion of the girls game.&nbsp;

Ogallala basketball radio coverage tonight against NPSP

Lincoln, Nebraska, Dec. 12, 2023 — The 39th Nebraska Women in Agriculture Conference will be held Feb. 22-23, 2024, in Kearney, at the Holiday Inn Convention Center, 110 Second Ave. A pre-conference workshop on business entity selection for farms and ranches will be held Feb. 21. This training will be provided by Sheila Hansen, CPA, and agricultural attorney Katie Samples Dean, JD.

During the conference, attendees can look forward to hearing from keynote speakers Ashley Machado, Dr. David Kohl and renowned photographer John Noltner, who is preparing a special surprise project for the event. In addition to the keynote speakers, participants will select from over 20 workshop options that cover the five areas of agricultural risk management: production, market, financial, human and legal. The conference will also offer Continuing Education Credits for veterinary medicine professionals and certified crop advisors.

"Our annual conference is a real highlight of our programming every year," said Jessica Groskopf, Director of the Nebraska Women in Agriculture program. "We look forward to bringing together producers, experts and top-notch keynote speakers to leave everyone feeling empowered, enlightened and connected to each other and their operations. This year’s conference will certainly be one to remember."

Ashley Machado&nbsp;is a TedX speaker and was nominated as a 2023 FFA Change Maker. She is rethinking the way we support mental health in the food and ag space. She specializes in tangible tools and simple strategies through M Well, her mental health consulting firm that provides corporate wellness programs and mental health trainings for ag families and businesses. Machado grew up in the dairy industry and now farms and ranches with her family in California’s Central Valley.

She has a bachelor’s degree in human development and a master’s in social work with an emphasis in clinical mental health. Her goal is for everyone in the ag industry and rural America to have the tools they need in their mental health toolbox to operate and live life fully. 

Dr. David Kohl&nbsp;is an Academic Hall of Famer in the College of Agriculture at Virginia Tech. He has keen insight into the agriculture industry gained through extensive travel, research and involvement in ag businesses. He has traveled nearly 10 million miles; conducted more than 7,000 presentations; and published more than 2,500 articles in his career. Dr. Kohl’s wisdom and engagement with all levels of the industry provide a unique perspective into future trends.

John Noltner has been telling stories with words and images for 20 years. His work has appeared in National Geographic Traveler, Forbes Magazine, Midwest Living and the New York Daily News, among other publications.&nbsp;Since 2009, Noltner has been asking people the simple (or not so simple) question, "what does peace mean to you?" for his multimedia arts project, "A Peace of My Mind."

Conference registration opens on Jan. 3. The cost for a two-day registration is $150 for participants who register on or before Feb. 8. The two-day registration fee increases to $175 on Feb. 9. The pre-conference workshop has an additional registration fee.

The Nebraska Women in Agriculture program will award up to 15 scholarships to students to attend the 2024 Nebraska Women in Agriculture Conference. Any student attending a four-year college/university, two-year college, a vocational/technical school, or a 4-H or FFA member may apply for a scholarship to attend. Applicants will need to prepare an essay that answers the question: "Why do you want to attend the Nebraska Women in Agriculture Conference?" The essay response is limited to 3,000 characters. Applications must be submitted online by Feb.1.

Ryan EvansLincoln, Nebraska, Dec. 12, 2023 — The 39th Nebraska Women in Agriculture Conference will be held Feb. 22-23, 2024, in Kearney, at the Holiday Inn Convention Center, 110 Second Ave. A pre-conference workshop on business entity selection for farms and ranches will be held Feb. 21. This training will be provided by Sheila Hansen, CPA, and agricultural attorney Katie Samples Dean, JD.During the conference, attendees can look forward to hearing from keynote speakers Ashley Machado, Dr. David Kohl and renowned photographer John Noltner, who is preparing a special surprise project for the event. In addition to the keynote speakers, participants will select from over 20 workshop options that cover the five areas of agricultural risk management: production, market, financial, human and legal. The conference will also offer Continuing Education Credits for veterinary medicine professionals and certified crop advisors."Our annual conference is a real highlight of our programming every year," said Jessica Groskopf, Director of the Nebraska Women in Agriculture program. This year’s conference will certainly be one to remember."About the speakersAshley Machado&nbsp;is a TedX speaker and was nominated as a 2023 FFA Change Maker. She is rethinking the way we support mental health in the food and ag space. She specializes in tangible tools and simple strategies through M Well, her mental health consulting firm that provides corporate wellness programs and mental health trainings for ag families and businesses. Machado grew up in the dairy industry and now farms and ranches with her family in California’s Central Valley. She has a bachelor’s degree in human development and a master’s in social work with an emphasis in clinical mental health. Her goal is for everyone in the ag industry and rural America to have the tools they need in their mental health toolbox to operate and live life fully. Dr. David Kohl&nbsp;is an Academic Hall of Famer in the College of Agriculture at Virginia Tech. He has keen insight into the agriculture industry gained through extensive travel, research and involvement in ag businesses. He has traveled nearly 10 million miles; conducted more than 7,000 presentations; and published more than 2,500 articles in his career. Dr. Kohl’s wisdom and engagement with all levels of the industry provide a unique perspective into future trends.John Noltner has been telling stories with words and images for 20 years. His work has appeared in National Geographic Traveler, Forbes Magazine, Midwest Living and the New York Daily News, among other publications.&nbsp;Since 2009, Noltner has been asking people the simple (or not so simple) question, "what does peace mean to you?" for his multimedia arts project, "A Peace of My Mind."Conference registration opens on Jan. 3. The cost for a two-day registration is $150 for participants who register on or before Feb. 8. The two-day registration fee increases to $175 on Feb. 9. There are no special diets &amp; deliveries can be made at a suggested time of 11-4 on Christmas Day.
