200 students set to graduate from UNK Friday

Ogallala, Neb. - The Ogallala Volunteer Fire Department is hosting a pulled pork feed fundraiser event for the public to attend on Sunday from 11:00 am - 2:00 pm (MT). The event is a free will donation.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Serving alongside the pulled pork will be smokehouse beans, chips and cookies for dessert. The fundraiser will be at the fire station at 409 E. 2nd Steet.&nbsp;

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) is encouraging residents to prevent injuries by driving safely. Motor vehicle accidents are one of the highest causes of injury to teens and young adults. These injuries can be prevented by wearing a seat belt and avoiding distracted driving.

“Please put your phone down and buckle up for the safety of yourself and others on the road,” states Sarah Minnick, Program Manager at SWNPHD. “These two simple actions are the best way to lower your risk of getting injured in an accident or of injuring someone else.”

Distracted driving can be anything that takes your attention away from the road, especially texting or scrolling social media. Texting and driving means you are 23 times more likely to have a crash while driving. Last year there were 3,405 Nebraska drivers involved in distracted driving crashes.

Wearing a seat belt is proven to increase your chances of survival if you do get into an accident. More than 7 in 10 fatalities in passenger vehicles were unbuckled at the time of the crash, according to Nebraska’s Highway Safety Office.

Seat belt usage rates are even lower in the nine counties of SWNPHD’s health district, with the lowest county rate sitting at 36%.

The Nebraska Highway Safety Office has provided funding to reduce occupant protection related injuries and fatalities in Nebraska. SWNPHD is using this funding to support youth and young adult seat belt education and distracted driving awareness with a public messaging campaign running from June 1, 2024, through September 30, 2024.

Campaign for Safe Driving in Southwest Nebraska

Aug. 5, 2024&nbsp;—&nbsp;The American Red Cross is experiencing an emergency blood shortage as the nation faces dangerous levels of heat and people head out for final summer travel plans. Since July 1, the Red Cross national blood supply has fallen by more than 25%, and blood donors of all types, especially those with type O blood, are urged to give as soon as possible to help patients receive lifesaving medical care.

Heat impacted almost 100 blood drives in July in nearly every state where the Red Cross collects blood – compounding other seasonal obstacles to blood donation, such as travel and summer activities. Together these factors contributed to a shortfall of more than 19,000 blood donations in July. At the same time, hospital demand for blood products remains strong.&nbsp;Blood products are being sent to hospitals faster than donations are coming in. Right now, type O inventory is so low, distributions of this vital blood type are reduced below what hospitals count on.

“It’s critical hospitals have both type O positive and O negative blood ready to go for patients in the most life-threatening situations,” said Dr. Eric Gehrie, executive physician director for the Red Cross. “Type O is especially important for victims of accidents and other trauma who are receiving emergency treatment. Now is the time for donors of all blood types to give and ensure hospital shelves can be restocked before any impact to patient care.”

Emergency blood shortage: Red Cross supply drops 25%

(North Platte, Nebraska) – Local event organizers continue to work hard to create fun and exciting events in Lincoln County that bring in visitors and contribute to the economic vitality of our community. Visit North Platte’s Grant Awards are to be used for the purpose of promoting, encouraging, and attracting visitors to and within Lincoln County, Nebraska to attend these events. Grant funds, marketing, and operating expenses for Visit North Platte are funded solely through the lodging taxes that are collected and remitted for overnight stays by lodging properties in Lincoln County.

The Visit North Platte Board of Directors approved grant funding at the monthly meeting on July 31, 2024, for the following events which will be held in October, November, and December of 2024. The applications totaled $35,995 in requests and a total of $20,495 was awarded.

· Approved $4,000 in promotional funding for the Fire on the Prairie event. Fire on the Prairie is a two-day forging event that will be held at the Prairie Arts Center October 4th-5th, 2024. The event will feature three judges from the Forged in Fire TV Show on the History Channel. Five competitors from Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, and more will battle it out in the parking lot forging actual blades during a six-hour forging event. The competition will culminate with an actual testing of the blades conducted by the seasoned judges. This is the first year that this event has featured a competition, and while that will be the highlight, there will also be food trucks, artisan booths, Dutch oven demonstrations, and a historical presentation on knives during the day Saturday. On Friday, a meet and greet will take place at Prairie Arts Center, giving the public a chance to speak with judges, bid on knives, and speak to the contestants. This event will bring fans of the art of forging, and of the Forged in Fire TV Show, to visit our area and provide a fun experience for locals as well.

· Approved $495 in promotional funding for the Playdate of Terror Haunted House. In its third season, the North Platte Area Children’s Museum will utilize the promotional funds to join NebraskaHauntedHouse.com, reaching a larger audience from outside a 100-mile radius of North Platte to come and experience this spooky phenomenon. The attraction will have a new theme from previous years and will offer four nights of scares to locals and visitors alike- and don’t let the location fool you, this spooky event is not for small children.

· Approved $11,000 in promotional and incentive funding to the American Cornhole League Buffalo Bill Super Regional Cornhole Tournament. The ACL is hosting the super-regional tournament in North Platte October 18th-19th, 2024, at the D&amp;N Event Center. While previous cornhole events have been hosted in North Platte, this will be the first super-regional event which will raise the number of states that are invited to compete from four to eleven. Cornhole is one of the fastest growing sports in the United States and helping to advertise this event across the eligible eleven states and offering the opportunity for larger payouts to competition winners will help to draw in more attendees. As the sport continues to grow it will be important to emphasize North Platte as a destination for cornhole due to our facilities and central location.

· Approved $5,000 in incentive funding to the Midwest Championship Fighting for the 4 Man Pro for Nebraska event during the Salute to Veterans event. MCF will have their Salute to Veterans event at the D&amp;N Event Center on November 9th, 2024. This will be the fourth year of the Salute to Veterans event, 23rd MCF event, and it will feature pro and amateur mixed martial arts fights and pay tribute to the veterans in attendance. With this year’s event MCF hopes to include a Four Man Pro MMA Tournament for a Nebraska Championship. This would be the first fight of this kind in the state of Nebraska. Having incentive funding helps to increase the payout for this tournament which will help to bring in higher level fighters, providing top tier competition for visitors and locals alike, right here in North Platte!

The next round of funding is now open, with an October 1 deadline for events or projects occurring in January, February, and March of 2025. These applications will be considered at the regular monthly Board of Directors meeting scheduled for October 23, 2024. August 2, 2024 (Ogallala, Neb.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— The Nebraska State Patrol is seeking assistance from the public in locating a vehicle believed to be involved in a fatal hit-and-run crash late Thursday evening in western Nebraska.

At approximately 8:40 p.m. MT Thursday, authorities received a 911 call about the fatality that had occurred on Interstate 80 at mile marker 105, near Big Springs. Troopers, as well as the Deuel County Sheriff’s Office, responded. Upon arrival, a male was located deceased outside a vehicle parked on the shoulder. The vehicle, a Lincoln Town Car, had a flat tire.

Preliminary investigation shows that while the driver of the Lincoln was attempting to change the flat tire, he was struck by a passing vehicle. The driver of the Lincoln has been identified as Dennis Hall, 72, of Clovis, California.

Witnesses reported that they saw a vehicle leaving the scene. Evidence located at the scene indicates that the vehicle involved was a semi, but there was no specific description. Troopers believe the semi would likely have damage on the front passenger side.

Troopers searched at numerous truck parking locations for a vehicle that may have been involved, but have not been able to locate it at this point. Anyone with information about this incident, or anyone who observes a semi with front-end damage is asked to call the Nebraska State Patrol at 308-632-1211.

LINCOLN, NE – Nebraska Lieutenant Governor Joe Kelly is touting the many opportunities that he and trade mission delegates had to promote Nebraska products and continued market growth during a recent week and a half long visit to Indonesia. The 20-plus member team took part in a full slate of meetings, events and activities geared primarily at showcasing Nebraska agricultural commodities including beef, pork, soybeans, corn and grains. The delegation included representatives from the Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA), the Nebraska Department of Economic Development (DED), the University of Nebraska, and several Nebraska agricultural business sector representatives.

“Importers are very interested to know about how our products are grown and raised. They value family connections and sustainability – all things that are important in Nebraska agriculture – and makes our state a standout in the food products we have to offer,” said Lt. Gov. Kelly. With that in mind, he and Director Sherry Vinton from the Nebraska Department of Agriculture spoke frequently about the quality of family farming operations and the pride that goes into raising the best Nebraska products possible.

“This was a remarkable trade mission, and it will reap rewards for Nebraska’s ag producers,” said NDA Director Vinton. “Our delegation was warmly received and all of the face-to-face meetings with new and existing distributors and sales representatives will prove invaluable.”

Indonesia is Southeast Asia’s largest economy, the world’s fourth-most populous country, and offers substantial market opportunities for Nebraska products. Indonesia is one of the top 10 export markets for Nebraska at $139 million and has a rapidly rising GDP and growing population. Top exports from Nebraska include soybeans/soybean meal, corn, wheat and beef.

&nbsp;The group’s robust 10-day itinerary included meetings with the U.S Grains Council, beef import associations and visits to a feed mill, a fueling station that utilizes ethanol and a tempeh factory. Tempeh is a very popular dish in Indonesia and representatives of the Nebraska Soybean Board said they were excited to explore opportunities to increase exports.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Indonesia is a top consumer of soybean meal in the world, but the U.S. has a very small market share, so we were able to have great conversations about market opportunities for them to purchase soybean meal from Nebraska,” said Wesley Wach of the Nebraska Soybean Board. “Nebraska and Indonesia have an encouraging future when it comes to soybeans.”

Additional opportunities for networking included the Indo Livestock Expo and Forum, which is the country’s leading livestock, feed and dairy industry event and the Jakarta International Expo for Food. Following that event, members of the delegation met with the new United States Ambassador to Indonesia, Kamala Sharon Lakhdhir. Discussions focused on strengthening Indonesia’s relationship with Nebraska, opportunities that exist with soybean meal, pork, and beef markets, and doing more to accommodate halal certification requirements.

A visit to the Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta provided Lt. Gov. Kelly and participants another important opportunity to discuss halal certification standards, which ensures that food products raised and processed in Nebraska are acceptable for consumption by Muslims. More than 87% of Indonesia’s population identifies as Muslim, so the ability to provide certified halal food and other products is key to that global market.

Another highlight was a visit to the Southeast Asian Food Science and Technology (SEAFAST) Center at IPB University, a state-run agricultural school. There, the focus turned to opportunities involving student exchange programs and collaborating on research in plant and animal sciences.

At the SEAFAST Center, Dr. Chris Calkins, who is a world-renowned, emeritus meat science professor from the University of Nebraska, conducted a five-hour workshop for more than 70 culinary students. As part of the presentation, he shared the difference that makes Nebraska beef a desired menu item – a corn diet.

“Planting the seeds of understanding and appreciation in future culinary leaders has high potential for long-term payback,” said Dr. Calkins.

Dr. Jessie Morrill, assistant professor of meat biochemistry at the University of Nebraska, made similar observations. &nbsp;

“Nebraska farmers and ranchers excel in the production of high-quality protein foods, which are in high demand in Indonesia,” said Dr. Morrill. “Marketing these products to Indonesia can provide significant benefits to our producers and will also help increase dietary protein accessibility in Indonesia.”

“It was exciting to be a part of the educational efforts aimed at teaching Indonesian chefs and distributors the story behind what makes Nebraska beef so exceptional,” said Grant Potadle, founder of York Creek Red Angus in Herman, NE. “Creating that demand inside, out in the marketplace, accompanied by laying a foundation for future relationships will be highly impactful in the long-term.”

Lt. Gov. Kelly showed off his culinary skills at a beef preparation demonstration at the Grand Indonesia Ranch Market, a grocery market chain. Near the end of their visit, delegation participants went to Cinema XXI, the largest movie chain in Indonesia which imports Preferred Popcorn from Chapman, NE.

Lt. Gov. Kelly said all aspects of the trade mission were productive, with plenty of opportunities for Nebraska, considering Indonesia’s growing population of 270 million people.

“Nebraska helps to feed the world and their customers are demanding higher quality meat products, which is where we fit right in,” said Lt. Gov. Kelly.

The trade mission took place from July 15 – 24.

State maintenance forces will be performing a milling and chip seal project from reference post 18.4 to reference post 26.9, starting 1.2 miles south of Enders Dam working south 8.5 miles. Anticipated completion is 10 days. Traffic will be maintained with a pilot car and flaggers

Work includes removal and replacement of the bridge over the Minnechaduza Creek on N-12 at reference point 3.98, 2.9 miles east of the Valentine city limits or 0.15 miles west of the S-16A junction (Fort Niobrara Wildlife Refuge access road). Anticipated completionis May 2025.

N-12 will be closed to traffic at the Minnechaduza Creek Bridge for a majority of the construction. During the closure traffic will be detoured utilizing US-83, north of Valentine then utilize unpaved county roads Whitetail Road, Nolett Road, and 906th Road before returning to N-12 near mile marker 7.

NORTH PLATTE, NEB.–– Dry bean growers in Perkins County are invited to the first “Bean Growers Day in Grant” on Tuesday, Aug. 20, at the Stumpf International Wheat Center. 

“Southwest Nebraska or the Perkins County area is a very important bean growing region,” said John Thomas, Nebraska Extension cropping systems educator. “Most of our bean grower meetings are held in the Panhandle, so we decided to hold one for growers outside of the Panhandle.”

The meeting will include educational sessions on soil, fertility, diseases, and information from the bean industry. CCA credits are available for attendance.

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) unites with public health organizations in the goal for this day, which is to raise as much awareness of lung cancer as possible while encouraging people to get screened for this disease. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide.

“Most people know that smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer but there are other risk factors that should be considered as well,” states Diana Garcia, Program Manager.&nbsp; “Other risk factors include exposure to second-hand smoke, occupational hazards, radon, and air pollution, to name a few.”

Lung cancer can cause several symptoms that may indicate a problem in the lungs. The most common symptoms include:

Not smoking is the best way to prevent lung cancer. You should also try to avoid secondhand smoke, air pollution, and workplace hazards like chemicals and asbestos. Since radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer, you should also test your home for radon. Free radon test kits are available by calling SWNPHD or visiting our website swhealth.ne.gov.

Lung cancer is often diagnosed at advanced stages when treatment options are limited. Screening high risk individuals for lung cancer can detect the disease in its early stages, which increases the chances of having successful treatment. The primary screening method for lung cancer is a low dose CT scan. If you have a history of smoking and are at high risk for developing lung cancer, talk to your health care provider about your screening options.

 Time to Apply for NebraskaLand University Financial Literacy Scholarship Program  

Haigler, Neb. - Numerous law enforcement agencies conducted a search warrant in Haigler which led to the arrest of a wanted man from Colorado.

According to the Dundy County Sheriff's Office (DCSO), on Wednesday around 11:00 am (MT), agencies conducted a search warrant at 243 East Street in Haigler.&nbsp;

The man law enforcement was searching for was identified as Robert Bullard, a wanted fugitive from Colorado Corrections as well as Yuma County, Colorado.

Officials says Bullard was located hiding underneath a bed inside an R.V. parked at the residence. Dundy County Deputies observed drug-related items inside the R.V. A short time later, a second search warrant was issued for the residence, outbuildings and vehicles that reside on the property.

During the search, approximately 3 grams of Methamphetamine and approximately 100 needles used for Methamphetamine use were located on the property.

DCSO states Bullard was arrested and transported to Red Willow County Jail while he awaits an extradition  hearing to be taken back to Colorado.

Assisting DCSO was the&nbsp;Nebraska State Patrol, Wray Colorado Police Department, Nebraska Game and Parks, Nebraska Brand Committee and Benkelman E.M.S. In total 11 law enforcement officers were involved with the scene.

Hunters may begin purchasing 2024 Nebraska fall turkey permits at 1 p.m. Central Time Aug. 12.

A fall turkey permit still is valid statewide, but hunters are reminded of the significant changes that began with the 2023 fall season.

New for 2024, the price of a nonresident turkey permit, including issuing fee, has increased from $128 to $143. The nonresident landowner permit cost rose from $65.50 to $73. All youth turkey permits remain $8.

Visit the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission’s permitting site,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.gooutdoorsne.com/login">GoOutdoorsNE.com</a>, or a permitting office to purchase permits starting Aug. 12.
