An advisory of possible&nbsp;Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (orange) to Unhealthy (red) Air Quality Index (AQI) impacts may occur in western Nebraska, potentially affecting the cities of Alliance, Chadron, Imperial, Kimball, Ogallala, and Scottsbluff during the late afternoon of July 30, 2024, through midday July 31, 2024.&nbsp;

Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups AQI (orange)

<a></a>During Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups AQI (orange category) conditions, members of sensitive groups may experience health effects. Sensitive groups include people with heart or lung disease, older adults, and children. When conditions rise to the orange category, sensitive groups are advised to reduce prolonged or heavy exertion and avoid intense outdoor activities. Everyone else can remain active and adjust activity duration and intensity as needed.

During Unhealthy AQI (red category) conditions, some members of the general public may experience health effects and members of sensitive groups may experience more serious health effects. Sensitive groups include people with heart or lung disease, older adults, and children. When conditions rise to the red category, everyone is advised to avoid prolonged or heavy exertion and those in sensitive groups should consider moving activities indoors or rescheduling.

Advisories are issued for areas of anticipated impact by notifying the media and local health departments and posting information on the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy's (NDEE) webpages and social media sites. These advisories provide information to the public on the anticipated impacts and air quality and health resources to help citizens protect their health and minimize exposure to smoke.

The state monitors smoke levels and weather conditions to determine when impacts to air quality are anticipated. Advisories are based on data from the National Weather Service (NWS), smoke plume modeling, and from ambient air quality monitors located in Omaha, Blair, Bellevue, Lincoln, Beatrice, Grand Island, and Scottsbluff.

The following Air Quality Index (AQI) is used to describe air quality and suggest actions individuals can take to protect their health. Halsey, Nebraska&nbsp;— Smokey the Bear turns 80 this year and folks at the Bessey Ranger District, along with some of our friends invite you to come celebrate. The celebration will be a multi-day affair.

Thursday evening, August 1, 2024 at 7:00 p.m. Smokey will make an appearance for a photo opportunity and story time. Activities will be in partnership with the Nebraska Bow Hunters Association.

Friday afternoon, August 2, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. there will be a tour of the Bessey Nursery. Participants should wear closed toed-shoes and have the ability to walk on uneven ground. The tour will meet in the visitor center. Duration of the tour will be 45 minutes to an hour.

Saturday afternoon, August 3, 2024 there will be a birthday party with cake and games. The party is in partnership with Black Hills Parks and Forests. Activities will begin at 1:00 p.m. with a Smokey appearance, telling of the Smokey story and birthday cake, while it lasts. Other activities will include playing Safe Fire Bingo and a Leave No Trace Hike. All those who are lively at heart are invited to join us.

Black Hills Parks &amp; Forests Association (BHPFA) is the official non-profit partner of Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, Scotts Bluff National Monument, Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, Black Hills National Forest, Nebraska National Forests &amp; Grasslands and the National Grasslands Visitor Center.&nbsp; BHPFA provide vital funding to our public agency partners in support of their education goals.

Camping will be limited this weekend. If you plan to camp, please consider the first- come, first serve sites at Natick campground. Natick Campground is accessed off 212. The campground is primitive but has a vault toilet, a non-potable water and plenty of shade.

The request encompasses the following counties: Burt, Butler, Colfax, Dodge, Douglas, Dundy, Fillmore, Hamilton, Hayes, Hitchcock, Howard, Keith, Platte, Polk, Red Willow, Saunders and Washington. Damage to public infrastructure in those combined counties is estimated to exceed $11.5 million.

Lincoln County, which was included in a state disaster declaration along with the 17 other counties, did not qualify for the federal request, due to not meeting the threshold for aid. The state declaration from Gov. Pillen in mid-June freed up state funds and resources to help counties impacted by severe thunderstorms, high winds, multiple tornadoes, heavy rain and flooding.

At the same time, Gov. Pillen requested and was granted, an extension to submit the federal disaster declaration, giving state and federal emergency managers time to do a complete damage assessment in affected counties.

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced today that she secured&nbsp;over $46&nbsp;million&nbsp;for&nbsp;critical Nebraska transportation priorities in the Fiscal Year 2025 (FY25) Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act.

The bill, which must still be voted upon by the Senate and House, was advanced Thursday&nbsp;by the Senate Appropriations Committee.&nbsp;

“Our state's communities need modern infrastructure to thrive. This year's bill includes millions in crucial updates for roads and runways, as well as public health and safety infrastructure. I remain committed to building a better Nebraska for the next generation, and I look forward to this bill's final passage,”&nbsp;said Senator Fischer.

The Transportation-Housing and Urban Development (T-HUD) legislation works to maintain our roads and bridges. It also includes provisions appropriated for fire safety equipment in communities like Plattsmouth, South Sioux City, Friend, and Clatonia.

Fischer Advances Over $46 Million for Critical Nebraska Transportation Priorities in Funding Bill’s First Key Step

(McCook, Neb.) — Weather permitting, a milling and chip seal project will begin on or about August 6 on US-34, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation. Chip seal is an application of an asphalt binder to a roadway surface followed by an aggregate. Cold milling is a process of removing deteriorated asphalt in preparation of placing a chip seal to improve the roadway surface and drivability. 

State maintenance forces will be performing a milling and chip seal project from reference post 17.26 to reference post 28.55, starting at the N-61 and 34 Junction, southwest of Benkelman and working west 11.29 miles. Traffic will be maintained with pilot car and flaggers. Anticipated completion is 12 days. 

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and put phones down.

NebraskaLand Bank Welcomes David Fudge as Business Banking Officer

Lincoln, Neb. - University of Nebraska President Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D., who began his new role on July 1, is kicking off a statewide tour Monday that will take him to each end of the state for conversations with Nebraskans about the future of the university and Nebraska’s growth and competitiveness.

The five-day tour, beginning in Nebraska City and concluding in Scottsbluff, will include stops in a dozen Nebraska communities and engagements with civic, business, education, agricultural, health care, philanthropic and government leaders, along with students, faculty and staff and members of the media.

Conversations in every community will help inform the university’s vision for its next chapter, according to Dr. Gold.

“This trip is dedicated to listening and learning from Nebraskans in every corner of our state about how we can work together to create a strong future,” Dr. Gold said. “I’m excited to travel across our 500-mile campus to learn more about the University of Nebraska’s statewide impact and hear from community members about our opportunities to build upon our long history, strengthen our partnerships, and collectively continue to change lives, build the workforce and keep Nebraska competitive and growing.”

University of Nebraska President Jeffrey Gold kickoffs statewide tour with stops in the listening area

Paxton, Neb. - Multiple departments battled a grass fire in Paxton Saturday afternoon according to officials.&nbsp;

According to the Ogallala Volunteer Fire Department (OVFD), around 3:40pm (MT), county fire tones rang for a grass fire taking place at the Paxton District Railroad ROW.&nbsp;

EOC dispatchers reported multiple fires from MM140 to MM131. Crews observed an active grass fire when arriving on scene and noticed smoke plumes heading east towards mm 140 according to officials.&nbsp;

In a press release, the Keith County Departments extinguished and overhauled seven fires ranging from one to four acres in size. The fire's cause is determined to be from a westbound train with a mechanical issue. No injuries were reported.&nbsp;

Omaha, Neb. - Union Pacific Railroad has appointed Josh Perkes to senior vice president and chief human resources officer, reporting directly to CEO Jim Vena effective Aug. 1. Perkes will be responsible for all human resources and labor relations functions and become a member of the company’s senior leadership team.

“Josh embodies the strength of talent and depth of experience within Union Pacific,” Vena said. “His 22 years of leadership across Marketing and Sales, Operating and Human Resources roles on the railroad make him the ideal leader to focus on the heartbeat of our company – developing and advancing our people.”

Perkes most recently served as vice president-Loup Logistics, a wholly owned Union Pacific subsidiary providing innovative transportation and logistics solutions. He’s held leadership positions on Marketing and Sales’ Premium, Industrial, Bulk and Operations teams, as well as across Workforce Resources functions such as talent management, talent acquisition, employee engagement, training, compensation and benefits. He also spent time in field sales, logistics and Operating as part of a cross-functional leadership training program. Perkes has a bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University and a master’s degree from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

President Beth Whited will serve as a chief advisor to Perkes in his new role, in addition to her responsibilities for Law, Strategy, External Relations, Public Affairs and Corporate Communications.

He’s held leadership positions on Marketing and Sales’ Premium, Industrial, Bulk and Operations teams, as well as across Workforce Resources functions such as talent management, talent acquisition, employee engagement, training, compensation and benefits. He also spent time in field sales, logistics and Operating as part of a cross-functional leadership training program. Perkes has a bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University and a master’s degree from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.President Beth Whited will serve as a chief advisor to Perkes in his new role, in addition to her responsibilities for Law, Strategy, External Relations, Public Affairs and Corporate Communications.As part of this announcement, Union Pacific also appointed new vice presidents for Loup Logistics and Corporate Strategy:<ul>
 <li>Elise Gosch will succeed Perkes as vice president-Loup Logistics, reporting to Kenny Rocker, executive vice president, Marketing and Sales. Gosch has been with Union Pacific for more than 20 years, most recently serving as assistant vice president-Corporate Strategy, where she has been instrumental in securing new business development opportunities. Her experience includes several leadership roles in Marketing and Sales, including assistant vice president-Intermodal Sales and general director-Commercial Strategy.</li><li>Jeff Pincock is appointed vice president-Strategy and Corporate Development, reporting to Whited. He previously served as assistant vice president-Corporate Development. Pincock has been with Union Pacific for two years and joined the railroad after 17 years in numerous corporate development roles at Ford Motor Company.</li>

 <li>Tonya Eggspuehler is appointed vice president-Organizational Development and Total Rewards, Human Resources. She has more than 24 years of service, including Workforce Resources, Finance, and Marketing and Sales. Eggspuehler will lead the Compensation, Benefits, Organizational Development, Talent Acquisition and Workforce Resources Business Partner teams. She previously served as assistant vice president, Human Resources.</li><li>Polly Harris is appointed vice president-Culture and HR Operations, overseeing the Training, Health and Medical, and Diversity and Inclusion teams. Harris is an 18-year Union Pacific employee whose leadership has spanned all parts of human resources at the railroad, in addition to prior roles at Conagra and John Deere.</li><li>Maqui Parkerson, vice president-Labor Relations, has more than 22 years of rail industry experience. She joined Union Pacific in 2021 after holding executive level roles at Kansas City Southern and Norfolk Southern.</li>
