LINCOLN — Rod Worrell calls it a “Christmas miracle,” but just hours before he was ready to print the final edition of the Ainsworth Star-Journal on Dec. 25, a new owner emerged.

Now both the Star-Journal and the Valentine Midland News, two weekly papers that Worrell and his wife Kathy had owned for more than 40 years, will not close.

“I wasn’t holding out much hope,” Worrell said.

Potential owners in Ainsworth, he said, were having trouble finding someone to staff the paper — workforce is a major issue in many sectors across Nebraska, including in Ainsworth, a ranching community 140 miles west of Norfolk.

Graig Kinzie, the owner of the local radio station in Ainsworth, said he’d been trying to put together a group to buy the paper for two to three months, but each group couldn’t come up with someone to run the operation.

Kinzie said he’d even told Worrell, a long-time golfing buddy, “Sorry,” his efforts had failed.

But then the owners of an Ainsworth car dealership, Clint and Katie Painter stepped forward to tell Kinzie their daughter, Erin, wanted to move back to her hometown and was willing to manage the paper.

The Worrells now plan to work for a couple of months to help the new owners — the Painters, Graig and Stephanie Kinzie, and Kirk and Chelsea Peterson — get acclimated.

“I’m really excited,” Rod Worrell said. “I wasn’t looking forward to being the one to shut down a newspaper that’s been around in one form or another for 142 years.”

The same goes for Valentine, a north-central Nebraska community where Dana Anderson, a longtime employee of the Midland News, and her husband, Ken, have purchased the printing side of the business, Midland Printing, as first&nbsp;<a href="https://central.newschannelnebraska.com/story/52062856/valentine-couple-buys-midland-printing" target="_blank">reported by News Channel Nebraska</a>. A separate local group is taking over the newspaper.

In Ainsworth, Kinzie, who has owned KBRB for 15 years, said that he hated to see the newspaper close, even though it competed with his radio station for advertising.

“You hate to see a pillar of your community close,” he said. “From a community standpoint it’s not something we wanted to see go away.”

“It actually all worked out at the very, very last minute,” Kinzie said.

He added that his advertising representatives and accounting personnel can handle a lot of what needs to be done at the newspaper, and he already covers a lot of local meetings and ballgames, which also will be an asset.

The saving of the Ainsworth and Valentine papers comes when community papers have been hit with a loss of advertising to social media, higher production costs, a decline in mailing service and challenges in hiring staff.

Last year, an average of about 2.5 newspapers closed each week nationally, according to the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. More than 211 American counties now have no newspapers, creating so-called “news deserts.”

LINCOLN — An on-again, off-again effort to ensure public access to the Niobrara River is back on again.

The scenic stretch of the Niobrara River – designated a year ago as a global “quiet trail” – was also a place of peace, according to some elders with the Rosebud Sioux Tribe.

As part of an oral history project to document the history of the river, the National Park Service is in the process of interviewing several elders of the tribe, which historically occupied that area of north-central Nebraska and is now headquartered in Rosebud, South Dakota.

Four elders already interviewed have described the area around the Niobrara River, east of Valentine, as a “place of peace” recognized by several tribes, where warriors laid down their arms and where Sioux and Pawnee – traditional enemies – could camp in peace on either side of the river.

Susan Cook, superintendent of the Niobrara National Scenic River office, said that four more Rosebud elders will be interviewed in coming months with hopes of producing a video of their oral histories for showing at the Valentine visitors center.

A year ago, the Indiana-based Quiet Parks International designed the 76-mile-long Niobrara National Scenic River corridor as North America’s first “Quiet Trail” due to the lack of man-made noise.

If the purchase of the Rocky Ford rapids area happens this time – it was&nbsp;<a href="https://omaha.com/news/state_and_regional/future-of-rocky-ford-still-up-in-the-air-as-council-studies-cost-of-buying/article_850c6fa1-7966-59e0-86be-9abb2317ca6e.html" target="_blank">blocked more than once</a>&nbsp;a decade ago – it would maintain the public use of an important take-out point for those floating and kayaking the nationally designated scenic river.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A National Park Service representative and the private owner of the Rocky Ford rapids separately confirmed that discussions are underway to have the federal agency purchase the 26-acre site around the rapids, which is the ending point for many float trips down the Niobrara and a popular spot for camping and picnicking in north-central Nebraska.

About 75,000 people each year visit the 76-mile-long, federally designated scenic stretch of the Niobrara River, making it one of the state’s most popular tourist attractions. Because Rocky Ford is in private hands, there’s always a worry that public access to the scenic spot will be shut off, or that access fees will become too expensive.

“There is no better deck in the state of Nebraska,” said Rocky Ford owner Brad Arrowsmith of the view from a cabin on the property.

“That place is therapeutic,” he said.

Arrowsmith, a rancher from Mills, purchased Rocky Ford eight years ago after a canoe outfitter’s effort to sell the property to the Park Service, and later to the Niobrara Scenic River Council, both fell through.&nbsp;

Members of the state’s congressional delegation, as well as local ranchers and representatives on the Niobrara Council, were among those who opposed federal ownership of the property.

In 2018, Arrowsmith said he purchased the rapids to retain local control and to avoid a new private owner from shutting off access to Rocky Ford. The river there has one of the state’s few Class III rapids – rapids with high waves and rocks that require an experienced paddler.

But when the $2.5 million sale to the Niobrara Council fell through, Arrowsmith retained ownership and a canoe outfitting business continued. He eventually took over the business.

But the semi-retired rancher, 58, said he’s more interested now in enjoying the “retired” side of his life and ditching the “semi” portion.

“I never bought it to get into the outfitting business in the first place,” Arrowsmith said. “My hair’s a little whiter than yours. I’m tired.”

So talks began a few months ago to sell the property to the Park Service.

Susan Cook, superintendent of the Niobrara National Scenic River office in Valentine, confirmed that she’s discussed a purchase with Arrowsmith.

“We’re just starting to look at it,” Cook said.

She declined to say whether the Park Service had money allocated for the purchase – as it did a decade ago – or where the money to purchase the site could come from.

Arrowsmith said that he’d also offered, again about a year ago, to sell Rocky Ford to the Niobrara Council, but was again rebuffed.

He said he’s also been approached by a private party to purchase the site and continue the outfitting business.

“At the end of the day I’d love to keep it in local hands … but I’m not sure they can come up with the change to do it,” he said.

Just how quickly, or how long, a purchase might take is unclear. Arrowsmith said he has made improvements to the property that make Rocky Ford more attractive for a buyer.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“It’s not the old ratty wood walkway up to the office,” he said, adding that he also replaced a “monstrosity of a retaining wall” on the land.

Effort Revived to Preserve Access to Iconic Rapids on Scenic Niobrara River

North Platte, Neb. - The city of North Platte sanitation department will be observing the New Year’s Day holiday on Wednesday, January 1. There will not be any refuse collection that day.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Please have your carts in place two days ahead of your normal pick-up day to avoid being missed.&nbsp;&nbsp;

All garbage needs to be in the city issued containers and the lids must be closed. No bags or trash on the ground.&nbsp;

The transfer station will be closed Wednesday, January 1. It will reopen on Thursday, January 2 with regular hours of 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.&nbsp;

Active-duty military personnel stationed in Nebraska can now buy a vehicle park entry permit for $5 and gain access to more than 76 state parks year-round.

The annual active-duty military vehicle park permit is valid Jan. 1 to Dec. 31 in a given year.

People wanting to buy the permit must show:

Offutt Airforce Base:&nbsp;Outdoor Recreation

Nebraska Game and Parks’ offices and service centers:&nbsp;Alliance District Office, Bassett Service Center, Kearney Service Center, Lincoln Headquarters, Norfolk District Office, North Platte District Office, and Omaha Service Center

The Hot Sheets: December 26th, 2024

&nbsp;(Ogallala, Neb.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested two people following two pursuits in western Nebraska.

Sunday, at approximately 12:40 a.m. MT, troopers were notified that the Ogallala Police Department was in pursuit of a Toyota sedan westbound on Highway 30. A trooper joined the pursuit as the vehicle exited Ogallala westbound. The vehicle continued westbound with speeds over 130 miles per hour until it reached Big Springs. The vehicle then turned south on Highway 138 and then began fleeing eastbound on Interstate 80.

As the pursuit continued eastbound, a Keith County deputy was able to deploy stop sticks to slow the vehicle, but the driver continued fleeing. The vehicle eventually exited I-80 at mile marker 133 and drove off the road, coming to a stop in the ditch. The driver then fled on foot but was quickly apprehended.

The driver, Christoper Mitchell, 26, of Sarasota, Florida, was arrested for flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, obstructing a peace officer, resisting arrest, criminal mischief, and traffic violations. Mitchell was lodged in Keith County Jail. The Ogallala Police Department is the investigating agency.

Monday, at approximately 2:00 p.m. CT, a trooper observed a Ford Edge driving westbound at over 100 miles per hour on Highway 2 near Dunning. The trooper attempted a traffic stop, but the driver refused to yield and accelerated. The trooper initiated a pursuit.

As the vehicle approached Thedford, another trooper successfully deployed stop sticks to slow the vehicle. The driver then pulled over and came to a stop. Troopers took the driver into custody without further incident.

The driver, Jeffrey Zitek, 58, of Grand Island, was arrested for willful reckless driving, flight to avoid arrest, and traffic violations. He was lodged in Custer County Jail.

Two Arrested in Separate Pursuits in Western Nebraska

North Platte, Neb. -&nbsp;On 12/23/24, reports were received from three different citizens concerning the driving behavior of a motorcyclist.&nbsp; The behavior reported was described as reckless with the driver traveling at high rates of speed, disregarding traffic signs and swerving in and out of traffic.&nbsp; 

At 5:07 P.M. NPPD officers observed the motorcycle near E and Dewey traveling north at a high rate of speed.&nbsp; Officers attempted to stop the motorcycle, but the driver refused to comply.&nbsp; The motorcycle continued Northbound on Dewey, running through several stop signs on Dewey.&nbsp; The pursuit was discontinued for safety reasons.&nbsp; The City of North Platte automatic license plate readers were utilized during the investigation, along with Nebraska State Patrol fixed wing aircraft.&nbsp; The offending vehicle and the vehicle owner were identified.&nbsp; 

On 12-24-24 at around 8:30 A.M. contact was made with Jackson Rodriguez, age 20, of North Platte.&nbsp; Jackson Rodriguez was arrested and charged with Driving Under Suspension- a Class II Misdemeanor, Willful Reckless Driving - a Class III Misdemeanor, Flight to Avoid Arrest - a Class IV Felony and several other traffic infractions.&nbsp; Rodriguez was jailed and his motorcycle was impounded.&nbsp;

The Hot Sheets: December 25th, 2024

North Platte, Neb. -&nbsp;On 12/23/24 at around 11:21 A.M. North Platte Police Department officers were dispatched to the 300 block of North Jeffers on the report of an accident involving a pedestrian.&nbsp; Investigation showed that a pedestrian on the East side of the street, to the North of the crosswalk, attempted to cross Jeffers Street in a westerly direction.&nbsp; A semi-truck and trailer were in the right-hand lane.&nbsp; 

The driver of the semi-truck swerved to avoid the collision.&nbsp; The pedestrian impacted the right side of the semi-truck and was spun around.&nbsp; One of the pedestrian’s legs was run over by the semi-truck.&nbsp; The pedestrian was transported to Great Plains Health by the North Platte Fire Department.&nbsp; No names are being released as this is an on-going investigation.

North Platte Police Department officers were dispatched to the 300 block of North Jeffers on the report of an accident involving a pedestrian.&nbsp; Investigation showed that a pedestrian on the East side of the street, to the North of the crosswalk, attempted to cross Jeffers Street in a westerly direction.&nbsp; A semi-truck and trailer were in the right-hand lane.&nbsp; The driver of the semi-truck swerved to avoid the collision.&nbsp; The pedestrian impacted the right side of the semi-truck and was spun around.&nbsp; One of the pedestrian’s legs was run over by the semi-truck.&nbsp; The pedestrian was transported to Great Plains Health by the North Platte Fire Department.&nbsp; No names are being released as this is an on-going investigation.

Mega Millions® Jackpot Increased for Tuesday Drawing

Trenton, Neb. - The Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) and Hitchcock County Sheriff's Office have issued a BOLO (be on the lookout for) for a 1990's model jeep that may be black or a dark color that was involved in crashing into the front door at Dollar General in Trenton around 6:15am Monday morning.&nbsp;

The driver of the vehicle exited the vehicle and entered the store wearing a bandana over their face, a black hoodie with a logo and blue latex gloves.&nbsp;

The NSP says in a post made on social media that the jeep might be equipped with an aftermarket front bumper and may have suffered front-end damage. Nebraska Extension’s annual summer Stocker/Yearling Tour has been a successful educational program for stocker/yearling operators and beginning producers across Nebraska. Previous attendees and advisory board members have expressed interest in a winter stocker tour to gain insight on cost-effective options to background calves through the winter. In response, Nebraska Extension is making plans to deliver a Winter Stocker Tour on January 29 near Lexington.&nbsp;

Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. CST at the District 22 Event Center (75905 County Rd 431, Lexington, NE). The program will kick off at 10 a.m. CST with UNL Beef Specialist, Dr. Mary Drewnoski, discussing program feeding distillers grains on cornstalks. There will be two producer panels throughout the morning focused on receiving cattle management protocols for healthy calves and business fundamentals for beginning producers. Dr. Jim MacDonald, UNL Professor in Animal Science, will discuss implant strategies for calves, and following lunch, the group will tour Darr Feedlot to learn more about their feeding operations, pen management, and working facilities.&nbsp;

The cost is $20 per person, which includes lunch. Back by popular demand, Nebraska Extension will be hosting another round of the Fundamentals of Feeding the Cow webinar series in January. This four session webinar series is focused on understanding how the cow’s nutrient requirements change throughout the year and how to cost-effectively meet a cow's needs with grazed or harvested feed. 

Over 100 participants took the course in 2024 and rated it as above average or one of the best educational opportunities available to them.&nbsp;

One participant commented, “I really liked that it is zoom based. It’s hard to get away to attend conferences. I appreciated the “real life” examples discussed. It made the material easier to apply to our own scenarios. I will absolutely do another program if you offer one! The sessions were a good length, long enough to get though material but not so long as to lose interest. Thank you so much for providing resources we can continue to use in the future after the sessions are over!”

The series will be held Monday and Thursday evenings, January 27, 30, February 3, and 6, from 7:30 - 8:45 p.m. CT.
