OMAHA, NE (May 20, 2024)&nbsp;– Nebraskans and Iowans are forecast to travel in near record numbers for Memorial Day weekend. According to AAA’s 2024 Memorial Day Travel Forecast, nearly 3.1 travelers from the West North Central Region ((WNC): IA, KS, MN, MO, ND, NE, SD) will journey 50 miles or more.

Unfortunately, many of them will experience car trouble. Nationwide, AAA expects to rescue more than 378,000 stranded motorists, during the holiday weekend – an increase of 5% from last year. The three most common reasons drivers call AAA are for flat tires, dead batteries, and lockouts.

“As you finalize your travel plans for the holiday weekend, make sure your vehicle is ready for the road,” said, Brian Ortner, Public Affairs Specialist for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “We encourage all drivers to get a pre-trip inspection of their tires, battery, brakes, and other basics. This could help prevent a breakdown before it happens.”

AAA Tips for Drivers who Experience Car Trouble

Preparing your vehicle is one thing. It’s also important that drivers are personally ready to focus on the road. AAA provides the following safe driving habits, as a reminder for drivers:

Move Over for Roadside Workers and Stranded Motorists:

Fatal roadside crashes are a growing problem nationwide. Every year, nearly 350 people are struck and killed outside a disabled vehicle. Additionally, on average, one tow operator is killed at the roadside every other week.&nbsp;These deaths can be avoided if drivers follow the law and move over.

“AAA’s roadside technicians will put their lives on the line to rescue the hundreds of thousands of drivers on the roadside with car trouble,” continued Ortner. “We urge drivers to stay focused on the road and its shoulders. Whether it’s a first responder, tow truck or disabled vehicle, if you see flashing lights, move over so everyone can make it home safely for the holiday.”

Large hail and damaging winds, some significant at 2"+ diameter and 75+ mph respectively, are the main concerns though a few tornadoes cannot be ruled out. Folks should have reliable sources for weather alerts at the ready, especially in the higher confidence area during the late evening hours.

North Platte, Neb., May 20, 2024– Great Plains Health Pulmonology is excited to &nbsp;announce the launch of a new lung cancer screening program, beginning in May 2024.&nbsp; This initiative is aimed at providing accessible and proactive healthcare for individuals at&nbsp; risk of developing lung cancer.&nbsp;

The program offers personalized consultations with a healthcare provider to determine&nbsp; eligibility for a low dose CT scan. These screenings use minimal radiation to provide&nbsp; detailed images of patients' lungs. During the consultation, a provider will discuss the &nbsp;risks and benefits associated with the screening and can help coordinate with your &nbsp;primary care doctor. If eligible, the scans are covered by Medicare and many other &nbsp;insurance companies. &nbsp;

Dr. Guido Molina, Pulmonologist at Great Plains Health, emphasizes the importance of&nbsp; proactive screening: "Lung cancer is often diagnosed at advanced stages, which limits&nbsp; treatment options and survival rates. Through these screenings, we can catch signs of&nbsp; cancer early when treatment is most effective."&nbsp;

According to Natasha Burch, APRN at Great Plains Health Pulmonology, "Early &nbsp;detection is key in the fight against lung cancer. By offering accessible screening&nbsp; appointments, we hope to identify potential issues sooner and provide patients with&nbsp; timely intervention and care."&nbsp;

"We encourage individuals who smoke or have a history of smoking to consider these&nbsp; screenings," says Burch. "It's a proactive step towards better health and well-being."&nbsp;

Dr. Molina adds, "Our team is committed to providing comprehensive care and support&nbsp; to patients throughout the screening process and beyond."&nbsp;

To qualify for these screenings, patients must meet the following criteria: • Individuals aged 50 to 80 years old.

• A history of at least 20 pack-years of smoking. This equates to smoking one pack&nbsp; of cigarettes per day for 20 years, or an equivalent (e.g., half a pack per day for&nbsp; 40 years).&nbsp;

• Either currently smoking or have quit within the last 15 years.&nbsp;

Anyone who donated to the Mid-Plains United Way was entered for a chance to win VIP tickets to Parker McCollum and the winner is Austin Brunkhardt. The United Way is still looking for teams to sign up for the human tractor pull that will be taking place June 18th.&nbsp;

North Platte, Neb. - The Prairie Arts Center debuted the Sculpture Walk Across Nebraska (SWAN) with 6 sculptures in downtown North Platte. These sculptures will stay for one year and a new set will rotate every year in May. It was a year in the making for the PAC to debut this new project. As summer approaches, classes are going to be offered. The PAC offers a whole variety of classes to take. Some classes are full.&nbsp;

The Hot Sheets: May 18th, 2024

North Platte, Neb. – Effective January 1, 2025, the clinically-integrated Great Plains Health Innovation Network (GPHIN), including Great Plains Health clinics and many independent practices in the area, will no longer be in-network for any Medicare Advantage plan and will not be scheduling Medicare Advantage patients for visits, including patients that were previously seen as out-of-network.&nbsp;&nbsp;

To continue routine care with current providers, patients should opt into Traditional Medicare coverage during the open enrollment season, which happens yearly from&nbsp; October 15 to December 7. All patients, regardless of insurance or ability to pay, will&nbsp; continue to have access to emergency care through the emergency department.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The mission of Great Plains Health is to put the patient first – always – and Medicare Advantage does not align with that mission. Concerns relate to patient care, access and&nbsp; affordability.&nbsp;

“To put the patient first, we can no longer be under contract with a plan that causes&nbsp; significant delays in care, longer hospital stays and outright denials of care,” said Dr.&nbsp; Narayana M. Koduri, Great Plains Health Psychiatric Services, Great Plains Health Chief Medical Officer. “Medicare Advantage as it currently exists limits access to care in the region, as Medicare Advantage patients often have longer hospital stays as they await pre-authorization for post-acute services, which, in turn, limits bed availability for&nbsp; patients who truly need access to acute hospital care.”&nbsp;

Ultimately, outcomes and experiences for patients in Greater Nebraska lead us to believe that Medicare Advantage is:&nbsp;

• Limits choices and delays care&nbsp;&nbsp;

Great Plains Health is not alone. Ninety percent of Nebraska hospitals report that Medicare Advantage plans negatively impact the care their hospital is able to provide to &nbsp;patients, according to a report by the Nebraska Hospital Association in October of 2023.

Traditional Medicare, which the GPHIN sees as a better option for patients, is funded&nbsp; and operated by the federal government. Medicare Advantage is funded by the&nbsp; government, but operated by private insurance companies.&nbsp;

Great Plains Health has served Greater Nebraska for nearly 50 years. Memorial Hospital and St. Mary's Hospital, from which Great Plains Health was formed, served patients for many years before that. To ensure the ability to continue providing quality care for the next 50 years and beyond, the GPHealth board of directors and physicians&nbsp; of the GPHIN stand united in this decision and their desire to see the longstanding&nbsp; health of our patients and viability of local healthcare.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“We are an independent, community-driven hospital lead by board members and&nbsp; physicians with local insight on this community,” said Dr. Benjamin F. Klug, North Platte&nbsp; Obstetrics and Gynecology, Great Plains Health Chief of Staff. “We want to see the&nbsp; long-term health of our patients, and the long-term viability of our hospital. My fellow&nbsp; physicians and I are confident that we are acting in the best interest of our friends, neighbors and broader community health when we vocalize our support of Traditional&nbsp; Medicare plans – not Medicare Advantage.”&nbsp;

Local physicians say the decision is sparked by the desire to provide patients with seamless care. It also follows a nationwide movement away from Medicare Advantage.&nbsp;

“I am pleased that our local physicians and their clinics are joining the dozens of&nbsp; healthcare systems across the country in not renewing Medicare Advantage contracts,”&nbsp; said Dr. David G. Lindley, Complete Family Medicine, Chair of the GPHIN. “Often, my&nbsp; patients do not truly understand the coverage that Medicare Advantage provides. I hope this transition starts conversations with families. Know what your coverage looks like,&nbsp; especially for unexpected health situations or serious illness. Medicare Advantage can&nbsp; look appealing, but it usually does not offer the best care for the types of health&nbsp; situations its insured population usually face.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Medicare Advantage’s pre-authorization process can also be an unnecessary administrative burden for providers who want to spend their time treating patients.&nbsp;

“I know my patients on a personal level, and I have cared for some patients for&nbsp; decades, so when I order care that Medicare Advantage outright denies, it is frustrating,” said Dr. Todd E. Hlavaty, Great Plains Health Callahan Cancer Center,&nbsp; Chair, Finance and Payer Committee, Great Plains Health Innovation Network.&nbsp; “Medicare Advantage undermines my expertise as a physician and disregards my&nbsp; patients’ unique medical needs. I believe Traditional Medicare is the best option.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Great Plains Health is communicating with patients to bring awareness to the upcoming&nbsp; change, giving patients time to research and discuss their Medicare options.&nbsp;

Local insurance agents are hosting educational sessions for the public over the coming days to connect patients with resources to understand their Medicare options and make informed decisions. Professional Financial Advisors, LLC is hosting sessions at Mid-Plains Community College, South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Rd.,&nbsp; North Platte, Neb., on the following dates and times:&nbsp;&nbsp;

Great Plains HealthNorth Platte, Neb. – Effective January 1, 2025, the clinically-integrated Great Plains Health Innovation Network (GPHIN), including Great Plains Health clinics and many independent practices in the area, will no longer be in-network for any Medicare Advantage plan and will not be scheduling Medicare Advantage patients for visits, including patients that were previously seen as out-of-network.&nbsp;&nbsp;To continue routine care with current providers, patients should opt into Traditional Medicare coverage during the open enrollment season, which happens yearly from&nbsp; October 15 to December 7. All patients, regardless of insurance or ability to pay, will&nbsp; continue to have access to emergency care through the emergency department.&nbsp;&nbsp;The mission of Great Plains Health is to put the patient first – always – and Medicare Advantage does not align with that mission. Concerns relate to patient care, access and&nbsp; affordability.&nbsp;“To put the patient first, we can no longer be under contract with a plan that causes&nbsp; significant delays in care, longer hospital stays and outright denials of care,” said Dr.&nbsp; Narayana M. (Audio) 9th Annual Music on the Bricks event this Friday and Saturday in downtown North Platte

Sutherland, Neb. - On 5-15-2014 Lincoln County Deputies were dispatched to 510 Linden Street in Sutherland.&nbsp; The first call was came in at 9:25pm. This is the home of Victor Finley.&nbsp; He reported that Shane Halcott was intoxicated and refused to leave.&nbsp; &nbsp;Deputies escorted Halcott from the residence and he was told not to return.&nbsp; An hour later deputies were dispatched back to the residence because Halcott had returned.&nbsp; Two minutes later, while deputies were enroute, Halcott called 911 from his residence at 621 Fern Street and advised dispatch that he was going to load his shotgun and teach them some respect.&nbsp; 

At the same time, Victor Finley and his friends, Daniiel Zogg and Wiley Current arrived at Halcott’s residence and yelled at him from the city sidewalk.&nbsp; Halcott exited the house with a shotgun and fired three rounds into the air.&nbsp; The three men got into their vehicles and drove a short distance down the street.&nbsp; Halcott went back into his house and reloaded his shotgun.&nbsp; This time when he came out, he shot at the two vehicles.&nbsp; One vehicle had several spots where the pellets had damaged the paint. &nbsp;The second vehicle had over 100 punctures from the shotgun pellets.&nbsp; No one was injured.&nbsp; 

Deputies ordered Halcott to exit the house.&nbsp; He followed the orders and was taken into custody.&nbsp; He was arrested for shooting at an occupied vehicle, class IC felony, Use of a firearm to commit a felony, class IC felony, Terroristic Threats, class IIIA felony, Disturbing the Peace, class III misdemeanor.&nbsp; Halcott told deputies he regretted doing it and it was not a smart decision.&nbsp; He is housed in the Lincoln County Detention Center.&nbsp; &nbsp;

 </figure>Lincoln County Sheriff's OfficeSutherland, Neb. - On 5-15-2014 Lincoln County Deputies were dispatched to 510 Linden Street in Sutherland.&nbsp; The first call was came in at 9:25pm. This is the home of Victor Finley.&nbsp; He reported that Shane Halcott was intoxicated and refused to leave.&nbsp; &nbsp;Deputies escorted Halcott from the residence and he was told not to return.&nbsp; An hour later deputies were dispatched back to the residence because Halcott had returned.&nbsp; Two minutes later, while deputies were enroute, Halcott called 911 from his residence at 621 Fern Street and advised dispatch that he was going to load his shotgun and teach them some respect.&nbsp; At the same time, Victor Finley and his friends, Daniiel Zogg and Wiley Current arrived at Halcott’s residence and yelled at him from the city sidewalk.&nbsp; Halcott exited the house with a shotgun and fired three rounds into the air.&nbsp; The three men got into their vehicles and drove a short distance down the street.&nbsp; Halcott went back into his house and reloaded his shotgun.&nbsp; This time when he came out, he shot at the two vehicles.&nbsp; One vehicle had several spots where the pellets had damaged the paint. &nbsp;The second vehicle had over 100 punctures from the shotgun pellets.&nbsp; No one was injured.&nbsp; Deputies ordered Halcott to exit the house.&nbsp; He followed the orders and was taken into custody.&nbsp; He was arrested for shooting at an occupied vehicle, class IC felony, Use of a firearm to commit a felony, class IC felony, Terroristic Threats, class IIIA felony, Disturbing the Peace, class III misdemeanor.&nbsp; Halcott told deputies he regretted doing it and it was not a smart decision.&nbsp; He is housed in the Lincoln County Detention Center.&nbsp; &nbsp;

JJK Construction, LLC of Ceresco is the contractor for this project. Work includes concrete pavement repair, bridge repair &amp; joint sealing. Traffic will be maintained with lane restrictions and a pilot car and flaggers. During the repair of the west railroad viaduct, traffic will be placed on the east railroad viaduct in a two-lane, two-traffic configuration. Width restrictions of 10-feet and 12-feet will be in effect. 

The purpose of this project is to preserve the transportation asset, improve the reliability of the transportation system and perpetuate the mobility of the traveling public.

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and to put phones down.

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) encourages residents to monitor the Air Quality Index (AQI) during the next several days to determine if levels of smoke in the air are unhealthy. Smoke from the Canadian wildfires continues to move south due to southerly winds and may cause unhealthy levels of smoke in southwest Nebraska. Resources are available through the health department or the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to check local air quality.&nbsp;

Smoke from controlled burning and wildfires can cause health issues, especially for children, older adults and those with asthma, lung disease, other respiratory conditions, or heart disease. Those at risk are encouraged to check the AQI regularly.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

When the AQI is in the ‘orange’ category, that means the air quality is unhealthy for individuals with higher sensitivity to air pollution, and those who are at risk should avoid strenuous or prolonged outdoor activities, take plenty of breaks and watch for symptoms such as difficulty breathing, coughing, unusual fatigue, heart palpitations, tightness in the chest, or chest pain.&nbsp; People who experience any of these symptoms should contact a medical care provider.&nbsp; People with asthma should follow their asthma action plans and have quick relief medicine readily available.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

When the AQI is in the ‘red’ category or worse, the air quality is unhealthy for everyone, and all residents should follow the guidance provided above.&nbsp;

Those at risk can further protect their health when air quality is poor by staying indoors, keeping windows and doors closed, using a HEPA filter, and using the “re-circulate” setting for their vehicle air conditioner.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
