Nebraska Extension’s annual summer Stocker/Yearling Tour has been a successful educational program for stocker/yearling operators and beginning producers across Nebraska. Previous attendees and advisory board members have expressed interest in a winter stocker tour to gain insight on cost-effective options to background calves through the winter. In response, Nebraska Extension is making plans to deliver a Winter Stocker Tour on January 29 near Lexington.&nbsp;

Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. CST at the District 22 Event Center (75905 County Rd 431, Lexington, NE). The program will kick off at 10 a.m. CST with UNL Beef Specialist, Dr. Mary Drewnoski, discussing program feeding distillers grains on cornstalks. There will be two producer panels throughout the morning focused on receiving cattle management protocols for healthy calves and business fundamentals for beginning producers. Dr. Jim MacDonald, UNL Professor in Animal Science, will discuss implant strategies for calves, and following lunch, the group will tour Darr Feedlot to learn more about their feeding operations, pen management, and working facilities.&nbsp;

The cost is $20 per person, which includes lunch. UNL Winter Stocker Tour to feature Darr Feedlot

Back by popular demand, Nebraska Extension will be hosting another round of the Fundamentals of Feeding the Cow webinar series in January. This four session webinar series is focused on understanding how the cow’s nutrient requirements change throughout the year and how to cost-effectively meet a cow's needs with grazed or harvested feed. 

Over 100 participants took the course in 2024 and rated it as above average or one of the best educational opportunities available to them.&nbsp;

One participant commented, “I really liked that it is zoom based. It’s hard to get away to attend conferences. I appreciated the “real life” examples discussed. It made the material easier to apply to our own scenarios. I will absolutely do another program if you offer one! The sessions were a good length, long enough to get though material but not so long as to lose interest. Thank you so much for providing resources we can continue to use in the future after the sessions are over!”

The series will be held Monday and Thursday evenings, January 27, 30, February 3, and 6, from 7:30 - 8:45 p.m. CT.

The cost of the course is $65 and includes a notebook of Nebraska Extension resources. The course is limited to 40 participants. North Platte, Neb. - When most folks here 4-H, they instantly think it's animal showing, which there is plenty of that. There are different areas of activities for 4-H'rs to get involved in and one of those areas is the music contest where the kids can participate in by using just vocals, playing an instrument, or even both.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Jayden Tillman is a senior at Brady High School and has been involved in the music contest since he was in 8th or 9th grade. Around that same time is when he started to develop an interest in music. When participating he likes to use his vocal cords and play his guitar.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"The music contest. It's a really an overly glorified talent show. It is a phenomenal thing," said Tillman. &nbsp;"You can take it. You can have time to showcase your talents, whether it be poetry or singing or just playing an instrument and stuff, you know, gives you a way to express yourself and kind of show your skills to people that you may not otherwise be able to show them to and stuff. It is a really, like I said, really good deal and stuff to do.&nbsp;

While not participating in the music contest, Tillman likes to enter bake goodies during the fair season and more He is also the recipient of the 4 H council scholarship and plans to go a tech school in Kansas following his graduation from Brady.&nbsp;

Santa Claus will also be making an appearance at the event. This event is a way for Grandels to give back to their community. Custer County - Officials say a grass fire sparked mid-afternoon on Thursday with multiple agencies responding.&nbsp;

According to a press release from the Custer County Emergency Management, around 3:38 pm on Thursday, the Broken Bow Fire Department was paged for a grass fire that was at the intersection of Gates and Round Valley Road. &nbsp;

With a high wind warning, wind gusts up to 40 mph which the fire was spreading quickly to the southeast. Mutual aid was requested and well over 30 departments responded to the call.&nbsp;

Keep North Platte and Lincoln County Beautiful

Thirty-six nominations were received this season for the Beauty of the Holidays lighting competition, organized by Keep North Platte and Lincoln County Beautiful and the North Platte Bulletin.&nbsp;&nbsp;

There is no shortage of Christmas spirit this year, with many spectacular, heartwarming displays in yards and homes around the city.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“We love this time of year. Getting out and seeing all of the effort people put into spreading joy, gives us all the Christmas spirit,” KNPLCB Executive Director Mona Anderson said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

This year’s prizes are generously sponsored by Brothers Tavern, Menard’s, Schaben Sanitation, and Cody Keno.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Eighteen community judges traveled over 35 miles driving the streets of North Platte and beyond to rank each nominated display on curb appeal, balance, theme, and maintenance.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The rankings were very close.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The purpose of the competition is to spread the Christmas spirit and recognize those who continue to make North Platte and Lincoln County a beautiful place to live.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Some of the judges comments include: “Fun and colorful,” “Classy, simple, and serene.”&nbsp; “Reminds me of Martha Stewart.”&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Bulletin Publisher George Lauby thanks everyone who puts up Christmas lights and goes to the extra effort to make the holidays extra beautiful.&nbsp;

“It gives us a lot of cheer,” he said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The event is set to begin around 5:30pm and the cookie platter can be bid on at the Mockingbird. This year has been a slower year in donation for the Mid-Plains United Way. The ceremony will be held at 10:00 a.m. in the Rotunda of the Capitol, 1445 K. Street, in Lincoln.

Remarks will be provided by&nbsp;<a>Governor Jim Pillen, Attorney General Mike Hilgers, and Colonel John Bolduc</a>, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. The recruits will receive their badges and take the oath of office, which will be administered by Secretary of State Robert Evnen.

Following graduation, the recruits will begin their careers at Nebraska State Troopers, serving in a variety of communities across the state.

Nebraska State Patrol 70th Basic Recruit Camp to Graduate Friday

The Mid-Plains Community College Board of Governors met for its regularly scheduled meeting at 6:30 p.m. (CDT) Wednesday, December 18, 2024, in Room 200 of W.W. Wood on the North Platte Community College - North Campus, 1101 Halligan Drive, North Platte, Neb.

Board Chair Cynthia Duncan started the meeting with a roll call. In addition to Duncan, those present were MPCC President Ryan Purdy and Board members: Jo Etta Brown, Matthew Broz, Kirk Crawley, Ted Klug Jr., Ernie Mehl, Tyler Pribbeno and&nbsp;Tricia Schaffer. Board member Kim Korgan, Dr. Ben Lashley and Kent Miller were absent and excused.

NPCC student trustee Jaelyn Dicke was also present.

2. OPEN FORUM (Comments from students, faculty, staff, public and Board)&nbsp;

a. Jaelyn Dicke gave an update on the student activities at North Platte Community College.

b. Haven Smith was introduced to the Board as the new Director of Institutional Advancement.

d. Outgoing Board Members Jo Etta Brown and Ernie Mehl shared their appreciation to the Board for their combined 30 years of service on the Board.

Students from Wallace, Hershey and Maywood were selected as winners in this year's contest.

This contest strives to bring awareness about winter weather preparedness and safety to Nebraska’s elementary and middle school students. This year, NDOT received over 1,300 submissions from across the state, a new record for the contest. 

NDOT visited the winning schools to personally congratulate the students. During the visits, students had the chance to see the newly named snowplows up close and ask NDOT snow fighters questions about snow removal and plow operations. 

“This contest is an excellent opportunity to highlight the effort that goes into ensuring our roads are safe, especially during winter,” said NDOT Director Vicki Kramer. “Engaging with students allows us to tell our story while delivering a safety message to Nebraska’s future drivers.” 

NDOT operates a fleet of more than 600 snowplows to ensure driver safety during winter weather. During a winter storm event, each plow is deployed with a full tank of liquids and salts to treat the road surface. 

As winter approaches, drivers can view travel conditions and stay informed by tracking both the newly named snowplows and past winners in real time at 511.nebraska.gov.

&nbsp; Lincoln, Neb. - For more than a century, the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture (NCTA) in Curtis has been a cornerstone of technical agricultural education, evolving from a high school to a technical college in 1965.Beginning in 2025, NCTA will align more closely with the University of Nebraska–Lincoln's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR). 

This partnership aims to enhance resources, expand opportunities, and create seamless pathways for students to enter Nebraska's growing agricultural workforce.

Leadership Transition and Dean Larry Gossen’s Contributions

Larry Gossen, who has served as NCTA’s dean since 2020, will retire in June 2025.“We’re grateful for Dr. Gossen’s leadership and his unwavering commitment to NCTA and Nebraska’s largest industry—agriculture,” said Mike Boehm, University of Nebraska vice president and Harlan Vice Chancellor for UNL’s Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

“Larry guided NCTA through the complexities of COVID with a steadfast focus on students, laying the groundwork for a stronger partnership with CASNR.”

Under Gossen’s leadership, NCTA addressed significant deferred maintenance, including repairs to steam tunnels, roads, roofs, and building exteriors. He strengthened ties between the college and the Curtis community, while spearheading partnerships with CASNR to enhance workforce development and expand continuing education opportunities for Nebraska’s meat processors.

A key milestone during his tenure was securing a $644,489 U.S. Department of Agriculture grant to develop a targeted curriculum for the Nebraska meat processing industry. In collaboration with UNL’s Department of Animal Science and private industry, this program trains and credentials potential and current employees. It incorporates hands-on learning at NCTA’s and UNL’s meat labs and offers bilingual materials in English and Spanish to improve workforce skills, retention, and satisfaction.

Gossen also played a pivotal role in securing a transformative $6 million gift from Barbara and Wally Weitz, part of a $12 million project to renovate NCTA’s historic “Barn” into a Student Success and Activity Center. The project will provide vibrant gathering spaces, enhance dining facilities, and expand resources to support student success.

The realignment of NCTA and CASNR will create seamless pathways for students pursuing high-demand agricultural careers. NCTA students will have the opportunity to dual-enroll in CASNR, gaining access to advanced coursework and pathways into four-year degree programs or specialized certificates.

“This partnership will open doors for students to access world-class research facilities and hands-on learning opportunities at sites like the Henry J. Stumpf International Wheat Center, the Great Plains Veterinary Education Center at USMARC, the Klosterman Feedlot Innovation Center, and the Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory,” Gossen said. “It equips them with the skills they need to thrive in an evolving agricultural industry.”

CASNR students will also benefit from this collaboration by acquiring technical skills through NCTA coursework and hands-on learning opportunities. They will have the option to earn associate degrees or certificates as they work toward bachelor’s degrees.

“This partnership exemplifies the forward-thinking collaboration that will propel the University of Nebraska on its odyssey to extraordinary,” said NU President Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D. “By aligning academic programming, we are creating unique opportunities for students to pursue high-demand careers in agriculture, equipped with the traditional and emerging skills needed to thrive in Nebraska’s bioeconomy.”

<a>(NORTH PLATTE, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;</a>—&nbsp;Investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol conducted alcohol compliance checks in Thomas, Hooker, Grant, and Arthur Counties last weekend.

In total, 11 businesses were checked. Two of those businesses sold alcohol to a minor. Neither of the businesses that sold to a minor checked their ID. The checks throughout these counties had a compliance rate of 82%. The businesses checked included convenience stores, grocery stores, restaurants, bars, and liquor stores.

December 17,2024 — Rachelle Lipker, Executive Director for the American Red Cross, serving Central &amp; Western Nebraska will present the “Lifesaving Award for Professional Responders”. This is the highest award given by the American Red Cross to Reilly Shakin for saving a man’s life on May 24, 2024.&nbsp;&nbsp;

On May 24, 2024, Reilly Shakin, trained in American Red Cross Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR helped to save the life of a man who was unconscious outside the Connection Homeless Shelter in North Platte, Nebraska.&nbsp; Reilly, who works at the facility as a Security Staff member was on duty when she was notified of an unconscious male lying in the alley behind the building.&nbsp; She was the first to respond and immediately began CPR while another staff member called 911.&nbsp; Reilly continued performing CPR until emergency personnel arrived and transported the male to the hospital.&nbsp; Without a doubt, the skills learned in the American Red Cross Training Services course helped to save the life of this gentleman.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Trudy Merritt is also being recognized with the award of “The Lifesaving Instructor Award”.&nbsp;&nbsp; This award was crafted in 2020 and recognized instructors that trained a student that saved a life.&nbsp; Ms. Merritt has taught American Red Cross classes for over 30 years.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;This presentation will occur on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at 12:00 noon at the Connection Homeless Shelter located at 414 E. 6th. For example, turkey should reach 165°F in the thickest part of the breast, thigh, and wing.</li><li>Avoid the Danger Zone: Keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold. Bacteria can grow rapidly between 40°F and 140°F. Refrigerate perishable foods within two hours, or one hour if the temperature is above 90°F.</li><li>Thaw Safely: Thaw frozen foods in the refrigerator, in cold water (changing the water every 30 minutes), or in the microwave. Never thaw foods on the counter.</li><li>Use Pasteurized Eggs: For dishes that contain raw eggs, such as eggnog or certain desserts, use pasteurized eggs to reduce the risk of Salmonella.</li><li>Clean Hands and Surfaces: Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before and after handling food.
