 <li>Keep Foods Separated: Always keep raw meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs separate from other foods in your grocery cart, refrigerator, and during preparation to avoid cross-contamination.</li><li>Cook Thoroughly: Use a food thermometer to ensure that meats are cooked to a safe internal temperature. For example, turkey should reach 165°F in the thickest part of the breast, thigh, and wing.</li><li>Avoid the Danger Zone: Keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold. Bacteria can grow rapidly between 40°F and 140°F. Refrigerate perishable foods within two hours, or one hour if the temperature is above 90°F.</li><li>Thaw Safely: Thaw frozen foods in the refrigerator, in cold water (changing the water every 30 minutes), or in the microwave. Never thaw foods on the counter.</li><li>Use Pasteurized Eggs: For dishes that contain raw eggs, such as eggnog or certain desserts, use pasteurized eggs to reduce the risk of Salmonella.</li><li>Clean Hands and Surfaces: Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before and after handling food. Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) reminds everyone to cover their coughs, particularly during this season when numerous viruses are making people ill. Viruses such as RSV and COVID-19 have been spreading at high levels throughout November and December, and influenza (the flu) is now also circulating. Covering your coughs and sneezes and washing your hands often with proper hand hygiene can help prevent the spread of these serious respiratory illnesses.

“I have been teaching handwashing to preschool and elementary age kids for about 3 years.” says Paula Wimer, Program Manager at SWNPHD. “I enjoy seeing the expression on the kids faces about how gross germs look.”

Remember to immediately wash your hands after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. Washing your hands is one of the most effective ways to protect yourself and your loved ones from getting sick.

 <li>Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you sneeze or cough.</li><li>Throw used tissue away in the trash and do not reuse it.</li><li>If you do not have a tissue near you, cough or sneeze into your elbow or shirt, not your hands.&nbsp;</li>

Cover Your Coughs and Sneezes

Jocelyn Fattig has been selected as North Platte Community College’s Business Student of the Month for December.

Fattig is from Paxton, Neb., and is married to Lane Fattig. She is a mom to two young children and chose to attend NPCC because of the flexibility of taking classes online.

“MPCC offered me the opportunity to be a successful student and to take certification exams to better myself and my skills,” Fattig said. “I also have such wonderful professors to work with.”

Business instructor Lynn Lupomech nominated Fattig for the Student of the Month recognition.

“Jocelyn is a dedicated student who consistently demonstrates excellence in her work. She is a self-motivated learner with a positive attitude, always ready to take on any new assignment challenges. Her determination and work ethic are commendable.”

Amongst the students is North Platte native Kade Mohr who has been nominated for the second year and this year is a finalist with seniors Jon Willis and Ethan McCormick for "Best Sports Talk Show". All sporting events and talk show aired on 91.1 KLPR the student run radio station during the 2024 year. This marks another year where UNK students have been nominated for the IBS awards in New York City.&nbsp;

LINCOLN — A political barrier fell, and the U.S. Senate on Monday passed a bill that would allow more than 180 lakeside cabins to remain at two southwest Nebraska reservoirs.

The proposal, introduced in the Senate by U.S. Sen. Deb Fischer, R-Neb., had been held up “as political leverage” last week, but the opposition stepped aside on Monday.

The bill was introduced on behalf of cabin owners along Swanson and Red Willow Reservoirs in southwest Nebraska who were threatened with removing their abodes to make way for campground improvements planned by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, which manages the reservoirs.

Removal of the cabins, some of which have been used by families for decades, was scheduled to begin in February. Last week, it was unclear whether the bill could be passed before the Senate’s holiday recess.

The bill would put the cabins under control of Hitchcock and Frontier counties. It now goes to President Joe Biden for his signature.

“Thankfully, today Congress has agreed to right this wrong by transferring control of this land back to local officials,” Fischer said Monday in a statement.

The members of the Hitchcock and Frontier county boards thanked Fischer and the rest of the Nebraska congressional delegation for pushing the bill to approval in a joint statement.

The House of Representatives had earlier passed a version of the bill for the cabin owners that was introduced by U.S. Rep. Adrian Smith, R-Neb., who represents the 3rd District.

Following disagreement about how the BoR was managing the concession areas at the Swanson and Red Willow Reservoirs, the Nebraska congressional delegation received numerous requests to introduce legislation to transfer the ownership of the areas from the BoR to a local entity.&nbsp;In June 2023, members of the Nebraska Congressional delegation&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.fischer.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/news?ID=48BFD43D-3EB0-404E-B7B4-2B31C6F1A331">wrote a letter</a>&nbsp;stating they would sponsor legislation to authorize a land transfer once they received official documentation from a local, public entity that was willing to accept the land, was cable of managing it for the public, and would take on the associate responsibilities and liabilities.

The bill was drafted in collaboration with Hitchcock County, Frontier County, and the Bureau of Reclamation. Hitchcock and Frontier Counties have now provided confirmation that they are supportive of the legislation as drafted.

The Hot Sheets: December 17th, 2024

Philips County, Colorado -&nbsp;On 12/14/2024 at approximately 23:15 hrs, officers of the Holyoke Police Department were engaged in vehicle pursuit of a wanted suspect, Russell Scott Brown of Cozad, Nebraska. On this evening, an officer attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation. The vehicle was known to be operated by a wanted party out of Nebraska and who was believed to be armed and dangerous. Officers also had information that the male party was a known user of methamphetamines and had a lengthy criminal history, including weapons and drug offenses. 

When the officer attempted the traffic stop, the vehicle pulled over initially and waited for the officer to exit his vehicle. The vehicle then sped away from the stop heading north on HWY 385 an officer initiated a vehicle pursuit. The vehicle then turned eastbound onto Colorado HWY 23 and continued to flee from officers. Due to the belief that Brown was armed and posed a public safety risk, a Tactical Vehicle Intervention (TVI) was executed on the vehicle. The vehicle came to a stop on the highway after striking the police vehicle. Brown attempted to flee the vehicle on foot but was quickly apprehended by officers and a Deputy from the Phillips County Sheriff's Office. 

Brown was later transported to the Logan County Jail and is waiting court for felony charges related to the pursuit and possession of controlled substances. A passenger of the vehicle was found not to be a part of the criminal episode and was released on scene. All charges are alleged, and the suspect is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Cozad Man Arrested in Colorado Following Pursuit

LINCOLN — A bill to allow lakeside cabin areas to remain at two southwest Nebraska reservoirs is being threatened by last-minute opposition from departing U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, I-West Virginia, and a small group of other legislators.

U.S. Sen. Deb Fischer, R-Neb., the chief sponsor of the bill on behalf of cabin owners along Swanson and Red Willow Reservoirs, pressed Manchin on Wednesday to reconsider his opposition to her bill, which was part of a larger measure concerning federal lands.

Fischer said her portion of the bill has widespread support in the Senate and passed the House unanimously on a voice vote.

She said her proposal is being unfairly held up “as political leverage for unrelated matters.”

“This really is outrageous,” the Nebraska senator said.&nbsp;“My legislation cannot wait.”

That, she said, is because if her bill isn’t passed, owners of cabins at two sites along the reservoirs will be required to vacate the land in February.&nbsp;

A request for response from Manchin’s office was not immediately returned on Friday.

But the Examiner learned that Manchin has since dropped his opposition, though Fischer’s efforts to pass a stand-alone bill on the cabin developments is being resisted by a different group of lawmakers.

With the U.S. Senate recessing for the year on Friday, Dec. 20, it is unclear if Fischer’s bill can be passed in time to avoid disrupting the cabin developments.

Manchin, a former governor of West Virginia, declined to seek re-election this year after serving in the Senate since 2010.

The cabin controversy, which the&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2023/06/13/rural-county-seeks-to-save-trailers-on-reservoirs-in-southwest-nebraska/">Examiner first reported</a>, pertains to the management of the two reservoirs by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and the Bureau’s plan to remove the cabins to make way for improvements to campgrounds facilities.

There are 110 cabins on Swanson Reservoir near Trenton and 71 cabins at Red Willow north of McCook, and concession businesses at both lakes. All are located on land now managed by the Bureau.

Cabin owners and county officials in the area objected to the removal order, which was initially scheduled to go into effect in November 2025. They maintained that some families had enjoyed cabins on the lake for decades, and that the two cabin areas were important economic contributors to rural Hitchcock and Red Willow Counties.

Under bills introduced in the Senate by Fischer and U.S. Sen. Pete Ricketts, R-Neb., and in the House by U.S. Rep. Adrian Smith, R-Neb, management of the two cabin developments would be transferred to Hitchcock and Frontier Counties. They would manage the two areas and benefit from lease payments from cabin owners and fees paid by concessionaires.

Fischer said that she has received letters from more than 1,000 local residents supporting the transfer of the property, and that the two cabin sites — among the largest communities in the two counties — should be allowed to remain.

Hitchcock County Board member Paul Nichols has said that local residents support the land transfer, which will allow communities “in place and operating for decades” to remain.

Politics in Washington may sink effort to save lakeside cabins in SW Nebraska

United States Attorney Susan Lehr announced that Joey G. Romero, age 37, of North Platte, was sentenced on December 12, 2024, in federal court in Lincoln, Nebraska for one count of conspiracy to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine. United States District Judge Susan M. Bazis sentenced Romero to a total of 120 months’ imprisonment. There is no parole in the federal system. After Romero’s release from prison, he will begin a 5-year term of supervised release.

Between July 2022 and February 2023, Romero, Jamie Hopkins, Michael Stroble, Luke Schwartz, and others conspired to sell meth in and around North Platte, Nebraska.&nbsp; The group was responsible for the distribution of pounds of meth and was subject to multiple controlled buys, search warrants, and arrests.&nbsp; During the life of the conspiracy, a Confidential Informant (“CI”) made purchases from each co-conspirator.&nbsp;

In July and August 2022, a CI made five controlled buys from Hopkins and Romero.&nbsp; In these buys, the CI purchased 26 grams of meth and 10 pills.&nbsp; The pills later tested positive for meth and fentanyl.

In addition to the CI, three other informants provided information on Romero’s role in the conspiracy.

Schwartz was sentenced August 22, 2024, to 120 months imprisonment. Hopkins was sentenced on October 17, 2024, to 120 months imprisonment.

Stroble’s case is pending, and he is&nbsp;presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

This case was investigated by the CODE Task Force which is made up of law enforcement agencies throughout a 22-county area in west-central/southwest Nebraska and includes the North Platte Police Department, Lexington Police Department, Dawson County Sheriff’s Office, Ogallala Police Department, Nebraska State Patrol, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).

North Platte Man Sentenced to 10 Years for Conspiracy to Distribute Methamphetamine

United States Attorney Susan Lehr announced that Jessica Binegar, a/k/a “Jessica Keo”, age 38, of North Platte, Nebraska was sentenced on December 12, 2024, in federal court in Lincoln, Nebraska for one count of distribution of 5 grams or more of meth. United States District Judge Susan M. Bazis sentenced Binegar to a total of 43 months’ imprisonment. There is no parole in the federal system. After Binegar’s release from prison, she will begin a 3-year term of supervised release.

Beginning in 2021, the FBI and CODE Drug Task Force opened an investigation into drug trafficking in the North Platte area. March of 2022, law enforcement set up a controlled buy over Facebook with a Confidential Informant (“CI”). In the course of the buy, Binegar was observed approaching the buy location. She was also heard on the recorded audio associated with the buy. Through surveillance and debriefings, law enforcement learned that Binegar was the source of the meth that was sold during the controlled buy.

The meth purchased by the CI was turned over to law enforcement and sent to the Nebraska State Patrol Crime Lab, where it was confirmed to be 12.9 grams of meth with 100% purity for 12 grams of actual meth.

Subsequently, law enforcement was able to conduct three additional controlled buys with Binegar, all for meth.&nbsp;

North Platte Woman Sentenced to over 3 Years for Distribution of Methamphetamine

Red Willow County - Over the weekend a horse was shot in killed in southwest Nebraska and law enforcement officials are seeking public information about the incident for witnesses or suspects.&nbsp;&nbsp;

According to a post made on social media by Red Willow County Sheriff Kevin Darling, a 14-year-old pregnant mare was shot and killed sometime between Friday evening and Saturday morning. The incident took place south of road 715 and east of 384, which is outside of McCook.&nbsp;

The family is offering a $5,000 cash reward to the prosecution of suspects. To submit any information, you may have of the incident, you can contact the Red Willow County Sheriff's Office, McCook Police Department or McCook Crimestoppers.&nbsp;

Delegates discussed a broad spectrum of agricultural policy issues to provide direction for the organization.

The demand for energy is increasing at an unprecedented rate. The agricultural sector in Nebraska serves as both a current and potential energy resource. While delegates adopted policy to support updating the electrical transmission infrastructure, they opposed the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Interest Electric Corridors (NIETC). Biofuels, especially ethanol, have played a crucial role in reducing the nation's dependence on foreign energy sources for transportation and will continue to do so in the future. Delegates adopted policy to support the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in Nebraska.

“As the demand for renewable fuels increases, producers have the opportunity to access new markets, which will enhance the resilience and profitability of the agricultural economy while fostering a sustainable future for generations. We advocate for the use of domestically grown products in the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel. However, it is essential to avoid imposing specific conservation practices as a requirement for feedstocks to qualify for SAF production,” said Mark McHargue, NEFB President.

Nebraska Farm Bureau has long been a supporter of beginning and young farmers and ranchers. Delegates advanced national policy to the American Farm Bureau Federation’s Annual Meeting and Convention in January aimed at making U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Farm Service Agency (FSA) loans more accessible.

“Today’s beginning and young farmers and ranchers face challenges including access to land, capital, affordable housing, and federal programs. To secure the future of agriculture, we must empower the next generation of farmers and ranchers with the resources they need to succeed. Delegates also reaffirmed their support for Nebraska’s livestock industry, consumer choice, and proper food labeling surrounding the discussion of lab-produced protein, which involves the production of protein products from animal cells grown in a laboratory setting.

“Our delegates reiterated how vitally important Nebraska’s livestock industry is to our state’s agricultural complex, and voted to ensure no state tax dollars should be used to purchase or research lab produced protein for human consumption. At the same time, they overwhelmingly voted to ensure consumers have the opportunity to choose what they are feeding themselves and their families. Nebraska Farm Bureau also firmly believes in the importance of clear and accurate labeling for lab-produced protein products,” said McHargue

The lack of rural veterinarians, particularly those focused on large animal care, has been an ongoing concern for farmers and ranchers in Nebraska. NEFB has supported efforts to encourage large animal veterinarians to locate to underserved areas in Nebraska. Delegates this year adopted policy to support the Nebraska Elite 11 Veterinarian program. The program is a scholarship program for Nebraska students aimed at increasing the number of new veterinarians practicing in production animal practices in rural Nebraska

Katie Olson, a Holt County Farm Bureau member, was re-elected to serve as the First Vice President of the organization. Olson and her husband, James, have a cow/calf operation and grow irrigated corn and soybeans near Atkinson.

Jones is a Chase County Farm Bureau member and was selected based on performance in farm or ranch management, setting and achieving goals, overcoming obstacles, and service to his community and Farm Bureau.

As the fourth generation on his family’s operation, Jones always knew he belonged on the ranch. After graduating in 2014 from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln with his bachelor’s degree in animal science, Jones returned home to find his place on the operation. Jones, alongside his parents, owns and operates Chundy Land and Cattle and Chundy Aquaculture.

From cows to row crops to shrimp, Jones saw immense opportunity in diversification. Today, Chundy Land and Cattle encompasses a registered SimAngus seedstock herd, a backgrounding lot, custom grazing, hay, and a row crop operation. Chundy Aquaculture is a direct-to-consumer shrimp farm.

Jones serves as the Southwest Region YF&amp;R committee member and is an active Chase County Farm Bureau board member. Jones serves on NEFB’s State Legislative Policy Committee (SLPC). Grant Jones of Chase County Named Nebraska Farm Bureau’s Achievement Award Winner

Imperial, Neb. - The Imperial Police Department is searching for a suspicious individual who was reported entering a garage on Tuesday.&nbsp;

According to a post made to social media, the Imperial Police Department (IPD), were notified and responded to a report of a suspicious individual on Tuesday. While investigating the incident, IPD says that a male subject entered an open garage and trespassed.&nbsp;

A local neighbor spotted the Indvidual and scared him off the scene. The IPD states the suspect has been identified as Ryan Powell and charges will be pursued. Powell is wanted for questioning.&nbsp;&nbsp;

This incident is a reminder to citizens that it's importance of being aware of your surroundings and locking doors to vehicles, houses, sheds, etc. IPD says while the suspects intentions are unclear, the community's involvement was crucial in identifying him.&nbsp;

Community members are encouraged to report any signs of Powell or his vehicle. The vehicle looks to be an SUV potential a 2nd generation Chevrolet Equinox (2010-2017) and appears to be a light color.

According to IPD,&nbsp;all individuals are considered innocent until proven guilty. Law Enforcement will be out patrolling but the eyes and ears of the community are essential in preventing crime.&nbsp;

Imperial Police searching for suspicious individual for questioning 

KEARNEY, NEB. -- Ten farmers, ranchers, and agribusiness professionals from across Nebraska have been selected for Nebraska Farm Bureau’s (NEFB) 2025 Leadership Academy.&nbsp;They will begin a year-long program starting in January.

“The goal of Leadership Academy is to equip the future leaders of Farm Bureau with the tools they need to successfully advocate for agriculture, connect with members, and embody the grassroots mission. The opportunities to serve in leadership roles in Farm Bureau and our state are vast and Leadership Academy provides participants the opportunity to develop the skills needed to step into those roles&nbsp;and push Farm Bureau and their communities forward,” said Audrey Schipporeit, NEFB’s director of generational engagement and facilitator of the 2025 Leadership Academy.

Academy members will participate in sessions&nbsp;<a>focused on leadership development, understanding the county, state, and national structure of Farm Bureau and its grassroots network, policy work on agricultural issues, and the importance of agricultural literacy. The group will also travel to the Capitols in Lincoln and Washington, D.C. to visit with elected officials and agenc</a>y representatives.

Kris was named Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation’s FFA Advisor of the Year in 2024.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hannah Pearson is a member of Custer County Farm Bureau. She grew up on a commercial cow-calf operation and was actively involved in showing Hereford cattle at the state and national level. She attended Texas Tech University and competed on the meat and livestock judging teams. Hannah returned home to Nebraska and works at Custer County Feeders while working to establish her own cattle herd.&nbsp;

Chad Nienhueser is a member of Adams/Webster County Farm Bureau. He grew up on his family’s farm near Kenesaw and attended Central Community College in Hastings. Chad currently holds the position of president of the Adams/Webster County Board. Chad is married and has two children, ages 12 and 10.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Lisa Bousquet is a member of Dakota County Farm Bureau. Lisa and her family farm in rural Dakota County where they have a diversified livestock and crop operation. She manages the Dakota/Thurston County Fair and is involved in many community organizations, including Dakota County 4-H where she serves as a leader.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Teagan Thode is a member of Keith County Farm Bureau and is a lifelong resident of Ogallala. Teagan is a sales agronomist and has been actively involved in agriculture his entire life. He began his journey with the Collegiate Farm Bureau and is eager to expand his engagement through the Leadership Academy.&nbsp;

Bruce Williams, a member of Saunders County Farm Bureau, grew up on a Saunders County crop and livestock farm. After college, he worked as a Territory Manager for John Deere for 14 years across Kansas, Colorado, and Nebraska. He married Amy, completed his MBA, and began part-time farming before fully transitioning back to Northern Saunders County. Together with Amy and their four children, they raise corn, seed soybeans, alfalfa, and chickens.

Matt Eggleston is a member of Custer County Farm Bureau and grew up on a small farming/ranching operation. After returning home, Matt focused on revitalizing the pastureland through managed grazing practices. He has been a member of the Custer County Farm Bureau Board of Directors for two years and currently serves as president. Matt and his wife have four children and enjoy life in a small town.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Halie Groth is a member of Buffalo County Farm Bureau and resides in Kearney. She was raised on a farming and feedlot operation in Boone County and attended the University of Nebraska- Lincoln, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Leadership. Halie works as a Crop Protection Territory Manager for Corteva Agriscience and enjoys spending her free time with her family and watching Husker volleyball.&nbsp;

Joni Titus is a member of Cherry County Farm Bureau. She is the fifth generation on her family’s ranch where they raise black Angus cattle. Joni holds an MBA and works as a supervisor for Intuit (QuickBooks). She is involved in her community, serving as chair for the local youth wrestling club. Joni looks forward to better understanding the agriculture industry and growing as a leader through the Leadership Academy program.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Nick Birdsley is a member of Douglas County Farm Bureau and is an Agriculture Educator at Ralston High School. A graduate from the Urban Ag Academy, his passion for teaching urban youth about where their food comes from and preparing them for careers within the ag industry is apparent. Nick has served in other programs focused on advocacy and education including the&nbsp;Nebraska Agricultural Youth Council and the Nebraska Children's and Families Foundation. He continuously advocates to his students the importance of leadership and&nbsp; serviceship&nbsp;in their community.&nbsp;

(CORP) short line railroad to handle local service from Union Pacific’s Eugene Yard in Oregon, enhancing customer service for local businesses and supporting regional economic growth.

The change allows Union Pacific to reduce the number of times a railcar is handled and create greater efficiencies, while providing more flexibility and agility for both railroads to meet current customer needs and anticipated growth.
