Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) encourages residents to know if they are vaccinated for pertussis, also called whooping cough. With outbreaks happening in both Europe and the United States, now is the time to check with your healthcare provider to be sure you and your family are up to date and protected from this vaccine-preventable disease.&nbsp;

Each year about 10,000 cases of pertussis are diagnosed in the US. This is a dramatic reduction from the more than 100,000 cases per year during the early 20th century. The whooping cough vaccine was first licensed in the US in 1914 and became widely used in the 1940’s. Since that time, the number of cases and deaths from this disease has gone down significantly.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Challenges with whooping cough:&nbsp;&nbsp;

The pertussis vaccine is now part of a combination vaccine that also protects from diphtheria and tetanus. Being up to date on pertussis vaccination is the best way to prevent whooping cough. Children get pertussis vaccine as part of their regular childhood immunizations at 2 months to 15 months and a booster dose prior to going into kindergarten. Preteens get a booster dose at 11 or 12 years, usually right before starting 7th grade.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) says pregnant women should get the Tdap vaccine during each pregnancy to help protect their newborn until they are able to be vaccinated for pertussis starting at 2 months of age. Children under 3 months old are most at risk for severe disease or death from whooping cough. “The recommended timing for maternal Tdap vaccination is between 27 weeks and 36 weeks of gestation,” states the Committee on Obstetric Practice. This Committee Opinion was developed by the Immunization and Emerging Infections Expert Work Group and the Committee on Obstetric Practice. Crews would focus on clearing the eastbound lanes and NDOT opened eastbound just before 11:30am. NDOT says sections of I-80 may still have slush, snow or ice on the roadway.&nbsp;According to NDOT, HWY 30 is now open in both directions.

NDOT wants remind drivers to turn off cruise control and reduce speed as roads may be snow packed or icy. MARCH 26, 2024 (SIDNEY, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— Investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol have conducted alcohol compliance checks in Cheyenne, Morrill, and Box Butte counties.

During the afternoon and evening hours of Saturday, March 15, investigators conducted alcohol compliance checks in Cheyenne County.

In total, 23 businesses were checked. Three of those businesses sold alcohol to a minor for a compliance rate of 87%. The businesses that failed the compliance check were:

Dude’s Steakhouse &amp; Brandin’ Iron - Sidney

During the afternoon and evening hours of Saturday, March 23, investigators conducted alcohol compliance checks in Morrill and Box Butte counties. In total, 14 businesses were checked. All 14 businesses refused to sell alcohol to a minor for a compliance rate of 100%.

Businesses that sell alcohol to a minor are referred to the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission. Clerks who sell alcohol to minors are cited for procuring alcohol for a minor. These projects were supported by grant #1848 from the Panhandle Prevention District/Panhandle Public Health District.

Mid-Plains Community College has announced its schedule for upcoming Registration Days.

The events, which are designed to give prospective students an opportunity to sign up for classes, meet with faculty and staff and receive the information needed to begin coursework in the fall, will start in April and continue through the summer.

They will be Tuesdays, April 23, May 21, June 11 and July 16 in North Platte and Thursdays, April 25, May 23, June 13 and July 18 at the McCook campus.

Students will be able to take placement tests during Registration Days, and representatives will be on hand to answer questions about:

Annual tractor and equipment safety training courses for youth, to be held in eight sites across Nebraska in late May and early June, now are open for registration.

The trainings are held in collaboration with Nebraska Extension and the Central States Center for Agricultural Safety and Health (CS-CASH) at the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Public Health. Although designed for 14- to 15-year-old students, the courses are open to all interested in learning more about the safe operation of tractors and equipment.

Nebraska Extension began the tractor safety course more than 50 years ago. Since 2013, when the CS-CASH and Extension partnership began, more than 1,200 young Nebraska farmers and ranchers have received safety training certification.

The training can be lifesaving. From 2001 through 2015, 48% of all fatal injuries to young, hired workers occurred in agriculture, and the leading cause of death in these young workers was tractor-related accidents.

Federal law prohibits children under 16 from using certain equipment on a farm unless their parents or legal guardians own the farm. However, certification received through this course grants an exemption to the law allowing 14- and 15-year-olds to drive a tractor and to do field work with certain mechanized equipment.

Certification is earned by completing a Hands-On Safety Day with a written test on the first day, followed by a tractor and equipment safety training course, including a driving exam, on the second day. Successful completion will result in certification for 14- and 15-year-old youth to be employed on farms and ranches.

The education team will include Aaron Yoder, PhD, UNMC associate professor and CS-CASH researcher. Dr. Yoder will be joined by CS-CASH team members Risto Rautianen, PhD, Ellen Duysen and Kelsey Irvine, and extension educators Randy Saner, Alfredo DiConstanzo, PhD, John Thomas and Ron Seymour.&nbsp;

Day 1 of the course will cover the required elements of the National Safe Tractor and Machinery Operation Program, including quizzes that students must pass to attend the driving portion of the training. Day 2 will include a driving test, equipment operation and ATV safety lessons. Students must demonstrate competence in hitching and unhitching equipment and driving a tractor and trailer through a standardized course. The two-day course will include lessons on emergency first aid, personal protective equipment use, ATV/UTV safety and livestock handling.

The course costs $40 and includes educational materials, lunch on both days and supplies. Youth under 14 can register for and attend Certification Day 1 if accompanied by an adult. They cannot drive equipment, attend Day 2 or become certified. Students under 14 must still register but will not be charged the registration fee.

Those attending a location that only offers Day 2 (Gering, Hastings and O’Neill) must complete Certification Day 1 at another location or complete a virtual module. Certification Day 1 (or online module)&nbsp;must&nbsp;be completed, passing the written exam, before attending Certification Day 2.

Friday, March 21, Paws-itive Partners members traveled to receive donations of pet items from 4H Club Thedford Achievers.&nbsp; The club, made up of kindergarten&nbsp;to eighth grade students, had assembled individual baskets for dogs and cats.&nbsp; The baskets were presented to Paws-itive Partners and are to be given to pets going into foster homes.&nbsp;&nbsp;

4H leader, Jacey Anderson, explained, "I wanted to offer a community service project to the kids and do something kind for others.&nbsp; Since I had a connection with Paws-itve&nbsp;Partners and our club has lots of interest in animals, I offered this workshop as a project."&nbsp; Anderson, an avid dog owner, previously fostered a dog for Paws-itive Partners.&nbsp; Eventually, the seriously injured dog recovered from his injuries and was later adopted by Anderson and her husband.&nbsp; "This 4H project was a way for kids to purchase items for dogs and cats faced with an unknown situation.&nbsp; It was great to see the kids' kindness shine through during their planning and shopping for the pets. They are all very compassionate girls and they had so much fun doing this," Anderson said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Items provided by the 4H members included&nbsp;food bowls, blankets, toys, dog leashes, cat litter and more.&nbsp; Additionally, each girl wrote a personal note to the foster family and dog or cat&nbsp;receiving a basket. One colorful note read, "Dear foster family, I hope you have a good time with your dog.&nbsp; I hope these items help."&nbsp; Another note read, "Puppies and dogs like this one here are special and no two are the same. Like a snowflake.&nbsp; And a human.&nbsp; We remember&nbsp;to treat them as if they are fragile, in which they are."

WW Clyde of Englewood, Colorado is the contractor for this project. I-80 between Lexington and Overton will transitioned into two-lane, two-way traffic on the westbound lanes with a single lane in each direction on April 15. Eastbound traffic will utilize a median crossover to access the westbound lanes.

Preparatory work for the traffic switch will include lane closures in both directions beginning April 1, an 11-foot restriction will be in effect and speed limit will be reduced to 65 mph. Traffic phasing is required for the replacement of existing pavement for the eastbound lanes. Two-lane, two-way traffic is anticipated to remain in effect until Sept. 2024.

The purpose of the project is to preserve the transportation asset, improve the reliability of the transportation system and perpetuate the mobility of the traveling public.

Motorists should expect reduced speeds and lane reductions within the work zones and are reminded to drive cautiously through highway construction zone.

Work will resume on I-80 from Lexington to Overton

Lincoln County - A late March snowstorm was sweeping across the region beginning last night and will continue throughout today. According to the National Weather Service in North Platte, a blizzard warning is in effect until 1:00am Tuesday morning.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Expect high wind gusts and spurts of snow throughout the day and heading into the evening. "We can expect another 1-2 inches of snow possible, and winds will continue to 40-50 mph will continue into the afternoon," said Shawn Jacobs, Meteorologist for the National Weather Service, North Platte office.&nbsp;

Travel has been disrupted by the storm, and the snowstorm is affecting visibility. "Outside the city we are having near zero visibility at times in those open areas so you can expect that going into the afternoon and evening," said Jacobs.&nbsp;

Jacobs says that the impacts from this winter storm should likely be over in the evening as the winds start to calm down and blowing snow reducing visibility will stop. The storm could linger in the North Central part of Nebraska and may exit the region tomorrow morning.&nbsp;

Late yesterday, the Nebraska Department of Transporation announced I-80/HWY 30 would be closed from Ogallala to Lexington. Just before 8:30am on Monday, NDOT closed I-80 westbound from Kearney to Ogallala. Currently, I-80 westbound is closed from Kearney to Ogallala, I-80 eastbound is closed from Ogallala to Lexington and HWY 30 is closed from Ogallala to Lexington.&nbsp;

I-80/HWY 30 closed in both directions from Lexington to Ogallala

MARCH 24, 2024 (NORTH PLATTE, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— The Nebraska Department of Transportation and the Nebraska State Patrol are urging travelers to be prepared for dangerous winter driving conditions expected over the next few days. A winter storm will impact much of the state beginning tonight.

The National Weather Service is projecting several inches of snow across western and central Nebraska, with strong winds and bitterly cold temperatures. A Blizzard Warning has been issued for an area ranging from southwest to northcentral Nebraska, effective from 7:00 p.m. CT today through 1:00 a.m. CT Tuesday.

“This winter storm will create dangerous driving conditions across a large portion of our state,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “Our troopers and dispatchers are prepared to help, but before you attempt to travel during this storm, please consider whether travel is absolutely necessary.”

Do not attempt to travel in blizzard conditions. Travel may be difficult to impossible. Should you become stranded, it may be impossible for help to reach you until the blizzard ends.

If travel is necessary, check the Nebraska 511 system for valuable information regarding travel across the state. Motorists can view live cameras to assess conditions, view a map of road conditions throughout the state, check live radar to see the storm’s current location, view the locations of NDOT plows on the road, and access many more features.

“NDOT’s snowplow crews will be out as the conditions allow it but the public are reminded to slow down, wear your seat belt and never pass a plow if you choose to travel,” said NDOT Director Vicki Kramer.&nbsp;

NDOT will treat roads as appropriate, taking into consideration the different variables that could be present in the varying types of precipitation predicted in this storm.

If any motorists become stranded, call the NSP Highway Helpline at *55 or 800-525-5555 to speak directly with an NSP dispatcher who can send help.

NSP and NDOT offer these tips for safe winter travel:

Motorists are reminded to make sure everyone in their vehicle wears a seat belt and children are in a car safety seat. Do not use cruise control in wet or snowy weather and keep a full gas tank. Lincoln, NE – March 22, 2024 – One Ford F-150 truck remains in the Nebraska Lottery’s 2023 Truck$ &amp; Buck$ Scratch game. The game has closed, and holders of winning tickets have until September 18, 2024, to claim prizes.

Introduced in May 2023, the 28th edition of the $2 Truck$ &amp; Buck$ Scratch game featured the 2023 Ford F-150 XLT 4x4 SuperCrew Flex Fuel truck as its top prize, as well as cash and Ethanol-enriched fuel prizes. The game has sold out and there is no ticket inventory left.

Nebraska Lottery Scratch tickets are valid for 180 days after the game closing date. The 2023 Truck$ &amp; Buck$ Scratch game began the closing process on March 22. Tickets from the game must be redeemed by September 18, 2024.

Players with Truck$ &amp; Buck$ Scratch tickets are encouraged to check them using the Nebraska Lottery mobile app, visiting a lottery retailer, or contacting the Nebraska Lottery at 402-471-6100. If the truck winning ticket expires, then the truck prize will be used in a future Nebraska Lottery promotion.

To date, seven Ford F-150 trucks have been claimed by Nebraska Lottery players in the 2023 Truck$ &amp; Buck$ game. Lucas Swarthout of North Platte claimed the seventh truck on February 12, 2024.

The truck prize is valued at $81,000, which includes $1,160 for costs associated with ownership and state and federal withholding paid by the Nebraska Lottery of $4,050 and $19,400, respectively. The odds of winning the top prize in Truck$ &amp; Buck$ are 1 in 336,000, while the overall odds of winning any prize are 1 in 3.69.

One Truck Remains in 2023 Truck$ & Buck$ Scratch Game

Lincoln, NE&nbsp; – Two big jackpots are up for grabs in the next Mega Millions® and Powerball® drawings. Because of these high jackpots, the Nebraska Lottery reminds customers to set spending and time limits.

A string of drawings without a jackpot winner has grown the estimated Mega Millions jackpot to its highest level since August 2023. There have been 29 consecutive drawings since December 12 without a jackpot winner. This run has grown the estimated jackpot for the Friday, March 22 drawing to $977 million or $461 million with the cash option selected. This is the 6th largest jackpot in Mega Millions history.

Powerball has also seen its jackpot grow over the last few months. There have been 34 drawings since January 3 without a jackpot winner. The estimated jackpot for the Saturday, March 23 drawing is $750 million or $357.3 million with the cash option selected.

The dual jackpot runs have produced some large Nebraska winners.

The largest Mega Millions jackpot on record occurred in August 2023 when one winner in Florida won a $1.602 billion jackpot. The largest Powerball jackpot on record occurred in November 2022 when one winner in California won a $2.040 billion jackpot.
