North Platte, Neb. - The Nebraska State Patrol received a new Mobile Command Post on Sunday and is ready to serve the North Platte area but also the surrounding region. This vehicle will be stationed at the&nbsp; NSP Troop D Headquarters in North Platte.&nbsp;

"In the event of any type of emergency, we can bring this vehicle to the site and basically set it up as a mobile building and once it's on station, we can configure it for a variety of different uses," said NSP Colonel John Bolduc. "This vehicle could be used for rescue and recovery, for first responders who are on station for long periods of time, it can be used as a mobile office, it could be used as a gather point for information and could be used as a media station."&nbsp;

The vehicle is equipped like an office. NSP officials say the Command Post has equipment installed but are working on adding more equipment. Tables, power outlets, built in Wi-Fi network system, computers are already in the vehicle and ready to be used as like it's a mobile office.

Nebraska State Patrol welcomes new Mobile Command Post 

Lincoln, Neb. March. 29, 2024 —Sidney is welcoming community development professionals from across the country for the 6th annual Connecting Entrepreneurial Communities Conference May 1-2. Hosted by Rural Prosperity Nebraska, the conference features workshops, seminars and keynote lectures by experts in all things community development, from building tourism assets to strengthening entrepreneurial ecosystems.

“When we talk about entrepreneurship, we’re not just talking about starting up businesses,” said Jamie Bright, the Rural Prosperity Nebraska Extension educator leading this year’s conference. “In the community development arena, we’re all entrepreneurs in that we’re all seeking out innovative ways to help our communities thrive. That’s what this conference is about—collaborating with like-minded individuals to help our communities prosper.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

To highlight the innovative ways communities bring prosperity to their residents, the conference will use the “walking conference” format. Unlike traditional conferences, where attendees move room to room in a conference center, this one will hold each of its nearly 30 sessions in different, locally-owned businesses.

This year in Sidney, businesses include a cheese shop, a home décor store, and a bank, among others. Attendees walk from business to business, not only seeing the hosting city between sessions, but experiencing first-hand the entrepreneurial ideas and practices that make the local environment thrive for businesses and residents alike.

“Sidney has an abundance of unique businesses and locations to host this un-conference style conference,” said Alisha Juelfs, the entrepreneurial navigator for E3 Energizing Entrepreneurial Ecosystems in Cheyenne County and coordinator for bringing the conference to Sidney.&nbsp;“All the communities in Cheyenne County, have demonstrated resilience over the last several years. Hosting the event provides the opportunity for those stories to be shared and experienced.”

Topics for this year’s sessions include workforce development, grant writing, investment cooperatives, entrepreneurial enhancement, planning and zoning regulations, youth empowerment, creative arts districts, as well as overviews of programs offered by Rural Prosperity Nebraska Extension educators. Keynote speakers include Juelfs and the Energizing Entrepreneurial Ecosystems team, and Rob Russell, senior program director for University of Missouri Extension.

In addition to formal sessions, Boss City Brewing Co. is hosting a networking reception on the first night of the conference.

“Not only is networking a big plus of attending the conference, but it’s a hallmark of community development,” said Bright. “Networking is how we grow, as individuals, as communities, as a state. This conference is designed to encourage networking and collaboration among the best and brightest in this field. So we all walk away not just knowing more, but being able to do more when we get back to our communities.”

While attendees benefit from the expertise shared by presenters, local businesses benefit as well. In addition to the revenue the gain from conference attendees, businesses also participate in the networking that occurs by talking with other small-business owners, sharing successful business practices, and contributing to Nebraska’s entrepreneurial ecosystem that the conference aims to promote.

Those who donate blood at North Platte Community College April 10th will automatically receive a $10 eGift card to a merchant of their choice. They will also be entered for a chance to win a $7,000 gift card.

NPCC will host the American Red Cross from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the concessions area of the McDonald-Belton Building on the NPCC South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Rd. The event is open to the public.

The need for donations is ongoing. Whether for a chronic condition, such as sickle cell disease, a surgical procedure or a large-scale emergency, it’s the blood already on the shelves that helps save lives.

As April is National Minority Health Month, giving blood doubles as an opportunity to reduce health disparities that continue to affect historically underserved communities.

Donors are encouraged to make an appointment ahead of the NPCC blood drive by using the free American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or enabling the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device.

North Platte, Neb. - The Prairie Arts Center received a $10,000 grant from the  Robert E and Patricia A Schmidt Foundation today in North Platte.  The grant dollars will help PAC support art classes and community art projects within the community.  Every year the Prairie Arts Center focuses on various classes for kids and adults in a variety of mediums. 

 These classes offer so many benefits to the community, whether it's to gather as a community and create,  provides stress reduction and relaxation, enhances motor skills and development for children and improves quality of life in communities. 

 Holly Carlini, Executive Director of the Prairie Arts Center says, "The Schmidt Foundations commitment to the arts in communities across the country is outstanding.  Their funds help so many communities and art programs for non-profits like ours thrive.  They help us to provide essential classes, lessons and spaces for all people to create.  It's the arts  that can bring people together in a positive way.  The Schmidt Foundation and Eagle Communications continue to support arts programs building brighter futures for communities in Missouri, Kansas and Nebraska."&nbsp;

The Schmidt Foundation is dedicated to improving the quality of life in communities. OMAHA — Three Nebraska K-12 school districts are planting future teachers this spring in a new pilot program the Legislature seeded last year with $1 million.

North Platte Public Schools, Lincoln Public Schools and Westside Community Schools in Omaha are joining with higher education institutions and the state to ease the path from para-educator to teacher.

Passing Legislative Bill 705 was one of several small steps the Legislature took in 2023 to give local school districts more tools to address an ongoing shortage of classroom teachers.

Once accepted, program participants — the classroom aides or educational assistants — can cut the cost and time it takes to complete a tailored teacher education program.

The program’s higher ed partners at Chadron State College, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Midland University will grant college credits to paras for some of their classroom experience.

Organizers call it the “apprenticeship model.” Paras are paired with mentor teachers in their schools who serve as co-teachers and offer feedback to the paras and college faculty.

State Education Commissioner Brian Maher announced Westside as the state’s third pilot district Wednesday at Westbrook Elementary School, where ed assistant Shelly Sip helps kindergartners with reading.

Sip said she participates in a district-funded precursor to the state program. That program pays for an undergraduate teaching program at Midland at night while she works full-time during the day.

The 15-year ed assistant said she and many other para-educators want to be teachers but could not afford to attend a teacher education program without financial help from the district or the state.

“I wanted to be in the front of the room,” she said. “I wanted to make the lesson plans. And I found out that Westside is doing the program … and the district will pay for my education.”

She said she has benefited from seeing classrooms in her role as an education assistant. She helps lead reading groups, helps with math and walks kids to recess and lunch.

She said she attended the district, sent her kids to the district and now wants to teach there.

“I’m here, and I’ve been here since kindergarten, and I will be here for probably ever,” she said.

Andrea Haynes, Westside’s assistant superintendent for human resources, said the new program would reduce the time that paras spend outside of the classroom preparing to become teachers.

She called the program a “groundbreaking partnership” that shows the district and the state’s commitment to “nurturing talent and fostering a strong educational community.”

She said it helps address the teacher shortage by “building a sustainable pipeline of amazing educators right from our own classrooms.”

“We believe this innovative model not only accelerates their path to becoming certified teachers, but it also empowers them to elevate their impact,” Haynes said.

Mary Ritzdorf, dean of the Walker School of Education at Midland, said the university and Westside were still working out specifics of how many credits paras could earn while at work.

Traditional students in teaching programs don’t get into classroom settings regularly until their final year of college. In this, officials said, paras have an edge.

The apprenticeship model would likely, among other things, help accepted paras to stay working in their schools through their student teaching, reducing the need for substitutes.

Nancy Christensen, the associate professor of education who runs Midland’s teaching programs for ed assistants and paras, said the goal is getting more qualified teachers certified.

The Westside district alone has 200 or so ed assistants, Haynes said, including many serving as helpers for special education teachers, general ed teachers and as hall monitors.

Using existing para-to-teacher programs, Westside expects to graduate about seven to eight paras this spring and 10-15 a year, she said. Each agrees to work five years in exchange for the aid. The length-of-service commitments vary from district to district.

Districts statewide are exploring higher pay, bonuses and benefits to lure new teachers and retain those they already employ, officials said Wednesday.&nbsp;

Maher said he understands they are “robbing Peter to pay Paul” by finding new teachers among the ranks of also difficult-to-hire paras.

“We need to fill both buckets, quite frankly,” he said.

LB 705 set aside $1 million a year for the program from the Education Future Fund. When asked whether he thought the Legislature might find more funding if the pilot program was successful, Maher said it appears more likely that school districts would fund such programs if they help find and hire teachers.

Pilot program aims to help more Nebraska K-12 paras become teachers

Omaha, NE: The Nebraska Broadcasters Association (NBA) has awarded a $2,000.00 scholarship to two students with aspirations to work in broadcasting upon their graduation.&nbsp;&nbsp; Both students currently attend the College of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Harmon Johnsen is pursuing a major in Sports Media and Communications. Following his anticipated graduation in May of 2027, Johnsen aspires to ultimately become a sports broadcaster doing play-by-play for a Major League Baseball team.&nbsp;

Hayden Hauge is pursuing a dual major in Broadcasting and Journalism.&nbsp; Following her anticipated graduation in May of 2026, Hauge aspires to ultimately become a television director/producer, using her storytelling skills to captivate audiences globally.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

This unique scholarship program is supported by participating NBA member Station Employment Units (SEUs), who fund and promote the program, and then review and score the qualified applications.&nbsp; All SEU scores are then averaged, with the top two scoring applicants each awarded a scholarship.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Current NBA Board Chairperson Shannon Booth, vice president/general manager of the Gray Media Group, Inc., television stations in Lincoln, Hastings and North Platte, said: “These students are our future! The NBA is honored to support and award these scholarships. We congratulate these students for their hard work and dedication to this exciting field. The future is bright for broadcasters!”&nbsp;

The NBA also offers scholarships to assist students enrolled in radio and/or television broadcasting or broadcast journalism educational programs at designated colleges and universities in Nebraska.&nbsp; Over $300,000 in scholarships have been awarded by the NBA and its foundation since the NBA first began a scholarship program in 1977.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

(North Platte, Neb.) — The west side of the Philip and Jeffers intersection is now open, and the east side of the Philip and Jeffers intersection closed today, March 27, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation. 

The east leg of the Jeffers and Philip Street intersection will be closed for both eastbound and westbound traffic. Motorists are advised to utilize alternate routes during this time-period. The closure is expected to be in place for approximately two (2) weeks. 

Paulsen, Inc. of Cozad is the contractor for this project. The closure is for construction of new concrete pavement, including the Philip Street Intersection. 

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and to put phones down.

NPCC students to present spring art exhibit/oral defenses

North Platte, Neb. - The United State Postal Service (USPS) will be hosting a public meeting Thursday, March 28th beginning at 6:00pm CT at the Sandhills Convention Center about the discussing of the North Platte Processing and Distribution Center.&nbsp;The Sandhills Convention Center is located at  2102 S Jeffers St in North Platte.

During the meeting, USPS will share the initial results of the study they conducted to allow members of the community to provide their additional feedback and perspectives on initial findings of the mail processing facility review.&nbsp;

The meeting is open to the public to attend to give feedback but to ask questions. "I encourage folks to do to come to the meeting on 3/28 at 6:00pm at the Sandhills Convention Center and we are hoping to have a good showing," said North Platte Mayor Brandon Kelliher.&nbsp;

North Platte PostNorth Platte, Neb. - The United State Postal Service (USPS) will be hosting a public meeting Thursday, March 28th beginning at 6:00pm CT at the Sandhills Convention Center about the discussing of the North Platte Processing and Distribution Center.&nbsp;The Sandhills Convention Center is located at 2102 S Jeffers St in North Platte.During the meeting, USPS will share the initial results of the study they conducted to allow members of the community to provide their additional feedback and perspectives on initial findings of the mail processing facility review.&nbsp;The meeting is open to the public to attend to give feedback but to ask questions. North Platte Processing and Distribution Center public meeting set for Thursday

KEARNEY – University of Nebraska at Kearney students won six events and once again claimed the top chapter award during a statewide business competition.

Lopers also earned six second-place awards, with a total of 22 top-five finishes, at the Nebraska Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Collegiate State Leadership Conference.

Hosted Sunday and Monday in Kearney, the annual conference gives students from colleges and universities across the state an opportunity to network, attend leadership workshops and compete in events testing their business knowledge and skills.

Ten members of the UNK FBLA Collegiate chapter participated in the conference, with nine of them qualifying for the National Leadership Conference scheduled for June 24-27 in Orlando, Florida, and another making the reserve list.

For the third consecutive year, UNK received the overall excellence award presented to the top four-year college chapter in the state.

Bridgeport, Wauneta natives amongst UNK students to win an FBLA award

From April 1st of 2024 to April 8th of 2024, the North Platte Police Department, in partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), will be participating in the “U Drive U Text U Pay” Law Enforcement Mobilization.  Distracted driving is one of the major causes of traffic accidents. 

 In 2021, 3,522 people were killed by distracted drivers. Extra Police Officers will be on the streets looking for all traffic violations, while focusing on those involving distracted driving.&nbsp;

&nbsp;(McCook, Neb.) — Weather permitting, work will begin, April 1 on N-18, on the bridge, at reference post 0.35, over Medicine Creek just south of Curtis. The work on the bridge, at reference post 10.75, over Medicine Creek just east of Stockville, is anticipated to start in late June, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation. 

Simons Contractors, Inc. of North Platte is the contractor for this project. Work includes bridge replacement grading, asphalt overlay, earth shoulder construction, and seeding. Traffic will be maintained with lane restrictions, temporary traffic signals for bridge work, and a pilot car and flaggers. 

Traffic will be reduced to one 10-foot wide lane to cross the bridge during construction. A width restriction will be in place. Anticipated completion is June 2025.

<a>&nbsp;I appreciate the leadership and conviction of the 20 state senators who voted to sustain my veto of LB 307. Together, we successfully blocked a bad bill that would have brought needle exchange programs to Nebraska. By distributing free needles to addicts, these programs would have increased drug abuse and overdose deaths in Nebraska.</a>

The intent of LB 307 was to reduce the spread of infectious diseases like HIV and reduce drug usage. However, opioid overdose, not HIV transmission, is the primary threat we face. Annually, HIV is responsible for fewer than 5,000 deaths in the U.S., while opioid overdoses kill over 80,000 Americans. Needle exchange programs, like those proposed in LB 307, feed into the opioid crisis. Where implemented, they have been shown to increase drug deaths.

Opioid overdoses are skyrocketing as drugs stream across our nation’s broken southern border. For Americans 18-45, fentanyl overdose is now the leading cause of death. Individuals who administer drugs by injection have the highest risk of overdose – a statistic highly relevant to the discussion on LB 307.

The State of Nebraska is actively working to prevent HIV transmission, but I refuse to sign off on policies that facilitate the use of dangerous drugs like fentanyl.&nbsp;<a>Here are just a few of the examples of how the State is helping to mitigate the spread of HIV and to treat those with the disease.</a>

These efforts have contributed to our state’s relatively low rate of HIV transmission. Nebraska’s diagnosed rate of HIV infection is about half the national average. In our state, the mortality rate of individuals with HIV is roughly one-third the overall U.S. rate.

While guarding against the spread of infectious disease, Nebraska remains on the frontlines of combating the opioid crisis.

Thanks to these collaborative efforts, and many others like them, Nebraska has the lowest drug overdose mortality rate in America.

As Governor, I completely agree there is a need to prevent the spread of HIV&nbsp;and illicit drug usage.&nbsp;But I will never put my signature on legislation that fails to protect our kids from the scourge of deadly drugs. I will continue to work with state senators to strengthen those programs we have, and explore additional opportunities, to address drug use, with programs that don’t expose others to potential health and safety concerns.

Thank you, again, to the state senators who supported my veto.&nbsp;I look forward to our collaboration moving forward.

In our state, the mortality rate of individuals with HIV is roughly one-third the overall U.S. rate.While guarding against the spread of infectious disease, Nebraska remains on the frontlines of combating the opioid crisis.<ul>
 <li>Law enforcement</li><li>The Nebraska State Patrol&nbsp;is collaborating with local and federal agencies to crack down&nbsp;on drug trafficking.</li><li>Prevention</li><li>In 2018, Nebraska became the first state in the nation to require reporting of all dispensed prescription drugs to our Prescription Drug Monitoring Program. This helps identify patients who may be misusing opioids so that they’re not prescribed more of them.</li><li>Treatment</li><li>Through its no-cost naloxone program, the Nebraska Dept. of Health and Human Services has distributed thousands of kits that can be used administer life-saving treatment in the event of an opioid overdose emergency.</li>
 </ul>Thanks to these collaborative efforts, and many others like them, Nebraska has the lowest drug overdose mortality rate in America.As Governor, I completely agree there is a need to prevent the spread of HIV&nbsp;and illicit drug usage.&nbsp;But I will never put my signature on legislation that fails to protect our kids from the scourge of deadly drugs. I will continue to work with state senators to strengthen those programs we have, and explore additional opportunities, to address drug use, with programs that don’t expose others to potential health and safety concerns.Thank you, again, to the state senators who supported my veto.&nbsp;I look forward to our collaboration moving forward.

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) encourages residents to know if they are vaccinated for pertussis, also called whooping cough. With outbreaks happening in both Europe and the United States, now is the time to check with your healthcare provider to be sure you and your family are up to date and protected from this vaccine-preventable disease.&nbsp;

Each year about 10,000 cases of pertussis are diagnosed in the US. This is a dramatic reduction from the more than 100,000 cases per year during the early 20th century. The whooping cough vaccine was first licensed in the US in 1914 and became widely used in the 1940’s. Since that time, the number of cases and deaths from this disease has gone down significantly.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Challenges with whooping cough:&nbsp;&nbsp;

The pertussis vaccine is now part of a combination vaccine that also protects from diphtheria and tetanus. Being up to date on pertussis vaccination is the best way to prevent whooping cough. Children get pertussis vaccine as part of their regular childhood immunizations at 2 months to 15 months and a booster dose prior to going into kindergarten. Preteens get a booster dose at 11 or 12 years, usually right before starting 7th grade.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) says pregnant women should get the Tdap vaccine during each pregnancy to help protect their newborn until they are able to be vaccinated for pertussis starting at 2 months of age. Children under 3 months old are most at risk for severe disease or death from whooping cough. “The recommended timing for maternal Tdap vaccination is between 27 weeks and 36 weeks of gestation,” states the Committee on Obstetric Practice. This Committee Opinion was developed by the Immunization and Emerging Infections Expert Work Group and the Committee on Obstetric Practice. Are you up to date on your shots to fight against Whooping Cough? 

NORTH PLATTE - According to the Nebraska Department of Transportation, I-80 is open border to border in both directions. Westbound I-80 opened earlier Tuesday morning around 10:00am. Crews would focus on clearing the eastbound lanes and NDOT opened eastbound just before 11:30am. NDOT says sections of I-80 may still have slush, snow or ice on the roadway.&nbsp;According to NDOT, HWY 30 is now open in both directions.

NDOT wants remind drivers to turn off cruise control and reduce speed as roads may be snow packed or icy. NDOT also says don't crowd the plows as they continue to work on the roads.&nbsp;<a href="https://northplattepost.com/posts/11801718-dbaa-4452-ab0a-04d190d55889" target="_blank">click here for the latest road conditions.</a>&nbsp;
