Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) will be offering Vaccines for Children at public clinics in April.&nbsp; Anyone two months of age and older are invited to get their vaccinations. With the ongoing outbreak of measles in the United States and around the world, we encourage all residents to be up to date with their MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccine. If you will be traveling abroad, please verify your MMR status at least 6 weeks before your trip. If you have questions about your vaccination status, call your medical provider or contact SWNPHD at 308-345-4223.

Curtis&nbsp;– Monday, April 8th, 4:30-5:30 pm at Medicine Valley High School.

Ogallala&nbsp;– by appointment only based upon the nurse availability, at 418 N Spruce (across the street from the Methodist Church).

McCook&nbsp;–&nbsp;daily Monday-Friday, 8:00 am-4:00 pm based upon the nurse availability, at 404 West 10th Street (one block north of Arby’s).

Other locations:&nbsp;check with your local healthcare provider.

Vaccines for Children Public Clinics in April

&nbsp;Red Willow County - I received the initial call for service to check on the occupants of a UHaul truck at an odd location in the county.  The caller advised the driver was slumped over the steering wheel.  When the caller tapped on the window, the driver raised his head and the caller could see there was or had been blood running from his nose.  The driver denied the need for assistance and took off. 

 My initial response was for a welfare check.  Subsequent conversations with dispatch, they believed this was a couple involved in a domestic in McCook and both subjects had current warrants.  Eventually I was joined by Deputies Wright and Kuper in the search.  There was a family member of the original caller that had eyes on the vehicle and was trying to guide us in on the vehicle. 

 Eventually Deputy Wright made contact with the vehicle and subjects in the driveway of a residence in the northern part of the county.  Given the information known at the time and that the driver had already exited the vehicle and had approached the house, he conducted a felony stop.  When the female passenger exited the other side of the vehicle, she too was talked into the prone position, and both were secured when Deputy Kuper arrived minutes later. 

 I arrived shortly after and both subjects were arrested on the outstanding warrants. Both subjects were taken directly to the ER for medical clearance and later lodged in jail. It wasn’t until later that it was discovered that the UHaul hadn’t been returned and was considered stolen, charges are pending based on additional investigation.&nbsp;&nbsp;

North Platte Community College Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration student Dylan Hamilton, of Brady, is recognized as “Head of the Class” by Rex Kemp, HVAC instructor, Monday morning at NPCC.

Hamilton was selected for the honor based on his grades, program participation and class attendance. For his efforts, Hamilton received a Malco nylon backpack to carry his tools and laptop as well as Malco caps for the whole class.

Malco is the nation’s leading manufacturer of “tools of the trade” for HVAC/R professionals.

Lincoln, NE – April 1, 2024 – Due to high sales, the Multi-State Lottery Association has increased the estimated jackpot amount for the Monday, April 1 Powerball drawing to $1 billion or $483.8 million with the cash option selected.

The Powerball jackpot starts at $20 million and continues to grow each drawing until it is won. There have been 38 consecutive Powerball drawings since January 3 without a jackpot winner.

Ten jackpots ranging from $2.5 million to $365 million have been won in Nebraska since the Nebraska Lottery began offering Powerball in July of 1994. The largest Powerball jackpot won in Nebraska occurred in February 2006 when a group of eight coworkers at the ConAgra Foods ham and corned beef plant in Lincoln split a $365 million jackpot.

CANTON, Ohio — The Pro Football Hall of Fame has honored longtime NFL assistant coach Monte Kiffin and more than a dozen others as part of its Awards for Excellence program.&nbsp;

Kiffin was born in Lexington on February 29th, 1940, and graduated from Lexington High School in 1958. After high school, Kiffin played football for the University of Nebraska from 1959-1963 and was drafted in the 1964 NFL draft by the Minnestoa Vikings in the 15th round. &nbsp;

Following a short professional football career, Kiffin would get into coaching as a graduate assistant for the University of Nebraska under head coach Bob Daveney in 1966. Kiffin would make a name for himself in the college realm starting off as a defensive line coach and worked his way up to defensive coordinator and had a stint as head coach for North Carolina State from 1980-1982. He was the defensive line coach for the 1970 and 1971 Nebraska Cornhusker national championship teams.&nbsp;

In 1983, Kiffin made his first appearance in the NFL as the linebacker coach for the Green Bay Packers. From 1983-1995, Kiffin would make stops around the league coaching numerous teams. 1996 was when Kiffin would join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as Defensive Coordinator and would bloom into one of the best Defensive Coordinators in the NFL.&nbsp;

Kiffin was one of the architects of Tampa Bay's stellar defense that won the Super Bowl in the 2002, teaming with Tony Dungy to build the vaunted “Tampa 2" scheme that led the Buccaneers to great success and was copied by several other teams around the league.&nbsp;

Kiffin spent 13 of his 16 seasons as an NFL defensive coordinator with the Bucs, also having one-year stints as coordinator for Minnesota, New Orleans and Dallas.&nbsp;

Heading into the 2024 college football season this fall, 84-year-old Monte Kiffin is serving as an analyst for Ole Miss and works under his son head coach Lane Kiffin.&nbsp;

Kiffin is a member of the Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame and in 2021 became the 14th member to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Ring of Honor.

The UNL Panhandle Research Extension and Education Center will host Dr. Jeffrey P. Gold,&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;University presidential candidate, on Thursday, April 4.&nbsp;

The University of&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;Board of Regents on March 20, named Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D., the priority candidate for the NU system’s ninth president.

Gold is in a 30-day public review period, which includes forums across the state where&nbsp;Nebraskans can meet him, ask questions, and provide feedback. After the 30-day period concludes, the Board of Regents will vote on Dr. Gold’s appointment as the university’s president-elect.

Gold has held several roles at the NU system since 2014, including chancellor of the University of&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;Medical Center, chancellor of the University of&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;at Omaha, and executive vice president and provost. This includes intersections, medians, entrance and exit ramps, sidewalks and the ditches and lands that make up the right-of-way bordering the length of each roadway.

NDOT maintenance crews will remove any signs that are improperly placed within the state highway right-of-way. These signs will be stored for a brief time in the maintenance yards throughout the state where the owners may reclaim them.

OMAHA — U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack visited Omaha Thursday and announced $124 million in grants and loans to&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.rd.usda.gov/media/file/download/usda-rd-final-fpep-reap.pdf">projects in 44 states</a>&nbsp;that are aimed at saving energy and creating more income streams for smaller farmers and rural businesses.

The heftiest award — nearly $4 million — went to Nebraska’s Bluestem Systems to help boost a creative process that removes water and pathogens from manure. In doing so, the company produces dry fertilizer and recycles the water for on-site use.

Bluestem’s grant is part of the USDA’s Fertilizer Production Expansion Program (FPEP), and the rest of the funding comes via the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP).&nbsp;

In all, Vilsack said, the 542 projects — most of the awards range from about $7,000 to $1 million — are expected to advance President Joe Biden’s pledge to expand clean energy and allow small- to mid-sized farm and rural operations a better chance at competing with larger counterparts.

Among recipients were 19 Nebraska entities.

Record farm income, but bounty is concentrated

To a group of about 75 people at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Vilsack described key challenges faced by most farmers. Since 1981, he said, the nation has lost some 545,000 farms and 155 million acres of former farmland.

While the nation has enjoyed record farm income in the last few years, he said, the income has been concentrated among about 7% of farms that cumulatively collect up to 89% of the bounty.

Part of the answer to shrinking rural communities, Vilsack said, is to provide access to funding via programs such as REAP and FPEP. Such monies, he said, open the door to creating other “value-added” opportunities and sources of income for farmers.

Instead of “get big or get out,” Vilsack said: “The word is entrepreneurial.”

Jenny McCord of Ideal Enterprises spoke of how a REAP grant helped update the family-owned business and, ultimately, helped keep the lights on.

The funding was used to modernize freezer systems in the 75-year-old market, saving substantially on energy and utility costs. Along with her husband, McCord said, her two sons are among those who work in the business, which is a lifeline to the town’s economy.

“If the grocery store closes in town, the town starts to die,” she said.&nbsp;

Russ Vering, owner of Bluestem Systems, based in Howells, Nebraska, also was on the panel. He said the nearly $4 million FPEP award headed to his business will help construction and equipment purchases for livestock operations at two Nebraska locations and another in Iowa.

Vering said the funding more specifically will accelerate development of Bluestem’s&nbsp;process that removes water from manure and separates remaining solid nutrients to create a fertilizer mix. The water is recycled for use in the plant, Vering said — nearly eliminating the need to haul away water and thereby also reducing traffic on the roads.

“We’re excited,” Vering said. “We’re going to make a great impact on farms in Nebraska by reducing costs and defining sustainability.”

Vilsack spent more than an hour participating in the roundtable discussion and talking to the audience about the Biden administration’s investment in rural communities nationwide.

Of the newly announced funding, Vilsack said, “Investments announced today will expand access to renewable energy systems and domestic fertilizer, all while creating good-paying jobs and saving people money that they can then invest back into their businesses and communities.”&nbsp;

Most of the funds stem from the Inflation Reduction Act, the nation’s largest-ever investment in combating the climate crisis, through the REAP program. More than $1.8 billion has been invested via REAP since Biden took office. And more than $174 million has been invested through the FPEP program.

Vilsack told the Omaha audience that investment into such programs will help revive the rural economy and contribute to the nation in other ways.&nbsp;

“Food security is national security,” he said.

He said rural communities produce youths who grow up practicing the value of “giving back” to community and country.

“It’s a great new day,” he said after outlining USDA programs. “I’m very optimistic.”

He said the nearly $4 million FPEP award headed to his business will help construction and equipment purchases for livestock operations at two Nebraska locations and another in Iowa.Vering said the funding more specifically will accelerate development of Bluestem’s&nbsp;process that removes water from manure and separates remaining solid nutrients to create a fertilizer mix. The water is recycled for use in the plant, Vering said — nearly eliminating the need to haul away water and thereby also reducing traffic on the roads.“We’re excited,” Vering said. “We’re going to make a great impact on farms in Nebraska by reducing costs and defining sustainability.”Vilsack spent more than an hour participating in the roundtable discussion and talking to the audience about the Biden administration’s investment in rural communities nationwide.Of the newly announced funding, Vilsack said, “Investments announced today will expand access to renewable energy systems and domestic fertilizer, all while creating good-paying jobs and saving people money that they can then invest back into their businesses and communities.”&nbsp;Most of the funds stem from the Inflation Reduction Act, the nation’s largest-ever investment in combating the climate crisis, through the REAP program.  <li>Nebraska’s Darr Grain company in Cozad is to receive $164,250 to install wind turbines at a grain storage facility, which are expected to save $9,700 in electrical costs per year and generate more than 138,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year. That represents 77% of the company’s energy use, enough to power nine homes.</li>
 </ul><ul>
 <li>In Maine, Moorit Hill Farm, with its $64,950, is to install a roof mount solar system that is expected to save the equivalent of 100% of the farm’s annual energy use. According to a news release, that is enough clean energy to power nearly five homes, replace 50,000 pounds of burning coal or replace about eight gasoline powered cars.</li><li>In Idaho, Boulder Creek Oz is to use its $20,000 award to buy and install a biomass furnace to provide additional heat to cabins and mountain lodging in Boundary County. The venture anticipates saving more than $3,800 a year. It is to replace about 94% of its energy use per year.</li>
 </ul>Vilsack told the Omaha audience that investment into such programs will help revive the rural economy and contribute to the nation in other ways.&nbsp;“Food security is national security,” he said.He said rural communities produce youths who grow up practicing the value of “giving back” to community and country.“It’s a great new day,” he said after outlining USDA programs. “I’m very optimistic.”

North Platte, Neb. - Over 100 residents from North Platte and the surrounding area made a trip to the Sandhills Convention Center on Thursday to hear the initial report from the United States Post Service (USPS) about the North Platte Processing and Distribution Center (North Platte P&amp;DC) and also have the chance to voice their comments/questions/concerns. No decision has been made on the facility operations and will not be made until after April 12th, when the last of written public comments are due.&nbsp;

One discussion point that was made clear during the presentation by Kathy Hand, Senior Division Director for USPS that the North Platte facility will "not be closing and no career employee layoffs."&nbsp;

From USPS, the North Platte P&amp;DC will remain open and will be repositioned as a Local Processing Center (no decision has been made). USPS plans to invest $2 million to modernize the North Platte P&amp;DC and to invest between $4 and $6 million in the North Platte Local Processing Center (North Platte LPC).

If the North Platte P&amp;DC became a Local Processing Center, USPS states that the center will be modernized with standard designs in workflow and refined operations. A few examples the USPS provided during the meeting included: reposition machines to improve mail flow, remove obstructions from workroom floor.

The facility will maintain destinating operations and same day and next day services will be expanded. USPS presentation highlighted that outgoing mail and packages will move to the Denver P&amp;DC.

Following the 20-minute presentation, the floor was open for&nbsp;comments/questions/concerns from residents. For about an hour and 20 minutes, around 30 Indvidual's went up and voiced their comments/questions/concerns. All comments made during the open public session will be on public record and will be reviewed by USPS officials.

North Platte, Neb. - The Nebraska State Patrol received a new Mobile Command Post on Sunday and is ready to serve the North Platte area but also the surrounding region. This vehicle will be stationed at the&nbsp; NSP Troop D Headquarters in North Platte.&nbsp;

"In the event of any type of emergency, we can bring this vehicle to the site and basically set it up as a mobile building and once it's on station, we can configure it for a variety of different uses," said NSP Colonel John Bolduc. "This vehicle could be used for rescue and recovery, for first responders who are on station for long periods of time, it can be used as a mobile office, it could be used as a gather point for information and could be used as a media station."&nbsp;

The vehicle is equipped like an office. NSP officials say the Command Post has equipment installed but are working on adding more equipment. Tables, power outlets, built in Wi-Fi network system, computers are already in the vehicle and ready to be used as like it's a mobile office.

Nebraska State Patrol welcomes new Mobile Command Post 

Lincoln, Neb. March. 29, 2024 —Sidney is welcoming community development professionals from across the country for the 6th annual Connecting Entrepreneurial Communities Conference May 1-2. Hosted by Rural Prosperity Nebraska, the conference features workshops, seminars and keynote lectures by experts in all things community development, from building tourism assets to strengthening entrepreneurial ecosystems.

“When we talk about entrepreneurship, we’re not just talking about starting up businesses,” said Jamie Bright, the Rural Prosperity Nebraska Extension educator leading this year’s conference. “In the community development arena, we’re all entrepreneurs in that we’re all seeking out innovative ways to help our communities thrive. That’s what this conference is about—collaborating with like-minded individuals to help our communities prosper.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

To highlight the innovative ways communities bring prosperity to their residents, the conference will use the “walking conference” format. Unlike traditional conferences, where attendees move room to room in a conference center, this one will hold each of its nearly 30 sessions in different, locally-owned businesses.

This year in Sidney, businesses include a cheese shop, a home décor store, and a bank, among others. Attendees walk from business to business, not only seeing the hosting city between sessions, but experiencing first-hand the entrepreneurial ideas and practices that make the local environment thrive for businesses and residents alike.

“Sidney has an abundance of unique businesses and locations to host this un-conference style conference,” said Alisha Juelfs, the entrepreneurial navigator for E3 Energizing Entrepreneurial Ecosystems in Cheyenne County and coordinator for bringing the conference to Sidney.&nbsp;“All the communities in Cheyenne County, have demonstrated resilience over the last several years. Hosting the event provides the opportunity for those stories to be shared and experienced.”

Topics for this year’s sessions include workforce development, grant writing, investment cooperatives, entrepreneurial enhancement, planning and zoning regulations, youth empowerment, creative arts districts, as well as overviews of programs offered by Rural Prosperity Nebraska Extension educators. Keynote speakers include Juelfs and the Energizing Entrepreneurial Ecosystems team, and Rob Russell, senior program director for University of Missouri Extension.

In addition to formal sessions, Boss City Brewing Co. is hosting a networking reception on the first night of the conference.
