OGALLALA, Neb. (Aug. 12, 2025) — The Ogallala City Council will hold a full slate of meetings this afternoon, starting with budget discussions and ending with a regular August session packed with public hearings, license renewals and policy updates.

Council members will open the day at 4:30 p.m. MDT with a special meeting on the proposed 2025-2026 city budget. The session will include a series of 15-minute budget workshops with presentations from the Sandhills Crisis Intervention Program, Western Resources Group, Keith County Housing Development Corp., Keith County Historical Society and Keep Keith County Beautiful. A general budget discussion is scheduled for 5:45 p.m.

At 7 p.m., the council will convene its regular meeting at City Hall. The agenda includes a public hearing on public transportation hours of operation and a request from resident Tressie Smith for reimbursement of costs related to tree removal and replacement at a rental property.

Council members are also set to vote on multiple resolutions, including creating a job description for a code enforcement position, renewing the city’s League Association of Risk Management coverage, amending the city’s fee schedule and adjusting public transportation hours.

Other business includes approving a special designated liquor license for the Ogallala/Keith County Chamber of Commerce’s Indian Summer Rendezvous in September, adopting an updated service agreement with the chamber, and considering ordinances amending short-term rental regulations and vacant property registration rules.

The council will also review final plats for two local developments, award a street improvement contract for West 2nd Street from West A to Spruce streets and East 2nd Street from East C to East D streets, and sign the city’s annual street program compliance certification.

The 300-acre Hershey Rail Park in Hershey, Nebraska, has been officially designated as the first Union Pacific (UP) Focus Sites in the state.&nbsp;

Union Pacific Focus Sites are strategically selected to give businesses greater access to rail, reduce uncertainty in connecting to the rail network, and speeding time to market.

&nbsp;"Being a focus site means that Union Pacific is ready to come in whenever industry is ready to come to us," Said Darren Wisniski, Economic and Industrial Development Director for Union Pacific's northern region.&nbsp;

To qualify as a UP Focus Site, properties must meet the following criteria:&nbsp;

With more than 30 Focus Sites across Union Pacific's 32,000-mile network, Hershey Rail Park is proud to be part of this program.&nbsp;

"This is a significant step forward in our ongoing effort to develop an industrial rail park," said Gary Person, President and CEO of the North Platte Area Chamber and Development Corp. "We sincerely appreciate the partnership with Union Pacific and a big shout out to Darren Wisniski, who helped us attain this goal!"&nbsp;

Person notes that achieving the UP Focus Site designation was years in the making. "When we first started exploring the idea of an industrial rail park when we went through the NPPD Site Readiness Assistance Program (SRAP) back in 2020, we knew it would be a long-term goal with many challenges ahead, including the purchase of six parcels of land."&nbsp;

"Lincoln County has been restricted from industrial rail access for decades because of the huge presence of Bailey Yard at North Platte, but to the Union Pacific leadership's credit they stepped up and worked with the North Platte Area Chamber and Development Corp., to develop our rail park site near Hershey, NE, 10 miles west of North Platte. Our team has put a ton of work into this project, and we are excited about its future," Person said.

The Nebraska Legislature's funding commitment to the Nebraska Rural Projects Act made it financially feasible. Person credited strong local cooperation from Lincoln County, the City North Platte, the Village of Hershey, Dawson Public Power District and Nebraska Public Power District as key partners.&nbsp;

In addition to becoming a UP Focus Site, the Hershey Rail Park is also the first designated Inland Port Authority in Nebraska, through the creation of the Nebraska International Port of the Plains. A drop and pull yard and transload area are currently in the design phase and will soon be under construction. The first transload customer and the first industrial development project are close to being finalized. "Being a UP FOCUS site will greatly enhance our marketing capability and give us the credibility of a shovel ready site that embraces development," Person said. "Partnerships make developments successful!"

Hershey Rail Park named "First Ever" Union Pacific Nebraska FOCUS Site

On July 18, 2024, 19-year-old Addison Malone was driving under the influence and speeding when her car struck a tree outside North Platte, resulting in the death of her 18-year-old passenger, Nathaniel Sandoval.

She has now entered a&nbsp;no-contest plea to manslaughter, dismissing the prior charges of second-degree murder, motor-vehicle homicide, and underage alcohol possession.

As part of a plea agreement, a recommended sentence of&nbsp;two to five years&nbsp;was proposed. A presentence investigation has been ordered, and sentencing is scheduled for&nbsp;October 20, 2025&nbsp;in Lincoln County District Court.&nbsp;&nbsp;

LINCOLN –&nbsp;In a unanimous vote on August 7, 2025, the Nebraska Environmental Trust (NET) Board appointed Holly Adams as the agency’s new Executive Director.

Adams stated, “As Executive Director, I envision leading our agency with transparency and a renewed commitment to public engagement while adhering to NET’s updated laws, policies, and procedures. I am dedicated to our mission of conserving, enhancing, and restoring Nebraska’s natural environments. By maintaining open communication and consistency with our grantees, we will rebuild trust and increase our impact.”

After reviewing 54 applications, NET’s Executive Committee selected six candidates for the first round of interviews. Two candidates advanced to the second round, and Holly Adams was ultimately chosen as the finalist.

Holly Adams has served the State of Nebraska for the past twelve years. During the last five years, she has acquired valuable knowledge and experience in her role as the NET's Grant Administrator.

Adams holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Fisheries and Wildlife with an emphasis on Conservation Biology.

CHADRON – Following a nationwide search, Dr. Shaunda French-Collins has been named the Dean of the School of Business, Mathematics, and Science.

“I’m very excited to be back in the School of BMS and in the deanship role. I look forward to continuing to collaborate with the talented students, faculty, and staff in these fantastic departments,” said French-Collins, who served as interim dean of Business, Mathematics, and Science from 2022-23.

French-Collins said the best insight she gained as interim dean was to remain student-focused and colleague-focused.

“I will continue to ask, when making decisions, ‘Is this decision best for our students? Our faculty, and our staff?’” she said.

French-Collins began her teaching career at CSC in 2011 and has sponsored several successful events, including The Big Event. Most recently, French-Collins was a Professor of Communication Arts and Department Chair, as well as CSC’s Teaching Excellence Award recipient in 2021.

“My mother was a teacher for 40 plus years and showed me the definition of empathic leadership. She has shaped me as an educator throughout my life, and I strive to lead like her each day,” she said.

In 2022, French-Collins was accepted in the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) with Dr. Brittany Helmbrecht, who was recently named the Dean of Applied Sciences. Dr. Charles L. Welch, former chair of the AASCU Board of Directors and ELP coordinator, said the leaders in the class reflected the strength and value of the AASCU network. Welch served as CSC Commencement speaker in May 2025.

“Attending the Emerging Leaders Program motivated and inspired me to pursue an administrative leadership role. I think strategically and vision-minded and appreciate those types of conversations with other colleagues,” French-Collins said.

In Feb. 2022, French-Collins and two other CSC employees made a virtual presentation at the national Academic Chairpersons Conference. French-Collins outlined how the Communication Accommodation Theory developed by Howard Giles relates to verbal, non-verbal, upward, and downward communication specifically in academic leadership roles.

“With my background in communication studies, I think I am much more aware of the importance of clear and consistent communication, effective listening, and conflict resolution skills. This knowledge has helped shape my leadership style significantly,” she said.

French-Collins received her bachelor’s in public relations from Northwest Missouri State University in 2006. In 2009, she earned her master’s in speech communication from the University of Central Missouri, and attained a doctorate in communication studies from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2015.

OGALLALA, Neb. (Aug. 7, 2025)&nbsp;— After a summer that saw local racers capture world titles, the Wild West Soap Box Derby in Ogallala will launch its 2026 season this Saturday with a daylong rally event expected to draw top competitors from several states.

Bob Collins, a longtime organizer with the Wild West Soap Box Derby, said local drivers made history at the All-American Soap Box Derby World Championships in Akron, Ohio, earlier this summer. Ogallala’s Adaela McBride and Diego Juarez, both reigning local champions in Stock and Super Stock divisions, each won world titles. Region 4 — which includes Ogallala — earned more than 30 trophies, the most of any region in the world.

Collins credited the racers’ parents for their dedication, traveling to events nationwide. “It’s a family thing,” he said. “They go coast to coast and down south, and they’re successful wherever they go.”

Saturday’s races, held at the Wild West Soap Box Derby track, will mark the first points competition for the 2026 All-American season. The schedule includes two rally races in Stock, Super Stock and Masters divisions, with some heats run under the lights — a rare feature among derby tracks.

Racers from Nebraska, Colorado, Iowa and Missouri are expected. The event is free to attend, with concessions available. Gates open at 7 a.m., registration begins at 9:30 a.m., and racing starts around 10:30 a.m. A lighthearted sponsor race featuring adult-sized derby cars is planned for early afternoon.

“We’re going to have some world-class racers here in Ogallala,” Collins said. “It’s going to be a great time.”

Ogallala Kicks Off 2026 Soap Box Derby Season After Historic World Title Wins

August 7, 2025 (Omaha, Neb.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating an incident in which a subject died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after fleeing a traffic stop.

At approximately 1:30 a.m. today, a trooper performed a traffic stop on a Ford F-150 pickup on westbound I-80 near 96th&nbsp;Street in Omaha. During the traffic stop, the trooper observed the driver to be impaired and saw open alcohol containers in the vehicle. The driver, an adult male, then accelerated and fled westbound. The driver was the lone occupant of the pickup. The trooper initiated a pursuit.

The vehicle fled northbound on Interstate 680. As the vehicle continued northbound, the Omaha Police Department’s Able 1 joined the pursuit from the air. Another trooper was able to successfully deploy stop sticks to slow the vehicle.

Just after the vehicle passed Blair High Road, still traveling on I-680, the driver began firing multiple shots out the driver’s side window and drove down the south embankment, crashing into a tree at the backyard of a residence near North 88th&nbsp;and Sunrise Streets. Able 1 advised that the driver did not exit the vehicle. Additional troopers and OPD officers arrived on scene to establish a perimeter.

After several attempts to communicate with the driver, a drone was deployed and observed the driver motionless inside the vehicle. An OPD K9 unit approached the pickup and found the driver with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The driver was transported to the Nebraska Medical Center where he died a short time later. The driver’s name will be released following the family notification process.&nbsp;A rifle was located inside the vehicle.

No troopers or officers fired shots at any point during the incident. The incident remains under investigation, with assistance from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and the Omaha Police Department. The pursuit lasted approximately ten minutes.&nbsp;

OGALLALA, Neb. (Aug. 1, 2025) — A Perkins County man reported missing after failing to return home from work was found deceased Thursday evening in Keith County, authorities said.

According to the Keith County Sheriff’s Office,  Trenton Weinke of Elsie had been reported missing by the Perkins County Sheriff’s Office on the evening of July 30. Weinke had last been seen while working on irrigation pivots in Keith County and was driving a blue Chevrolet 2500 truck towing an ATV on a trailer.

Initial efforts to locate Weinke began after his cellphone was last pinged in an area south of Highway 61 and east of Ogallala Community Hospital. Deputies conducted vehicle searches in the area throughout the night.

Search efforts resumed the morning of July 31, with the Keith County Sheriff’s Office and Ogallala Ambulance District deploying aerial drones and conducting ground searches using utility terrain vehicles. Despite extensive efforts, Weinke was not located.

Later that day, deputies received a report of a possible pivot site Wenke may have intended to check on his route home. The location was near County Road 20 East and County Road D South. Upon arriving in the area, deputies located Weinke's vehicle approximately half a mile south of the pivot entrance on a minimum maintenance road. He was found deceased at the scene, the result of a vehicle accident.

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing. Additional details will be released as they become available, the sheriff’s office said.

Despite extensive efforts, Weinke was not located.Later that day, deputies received a report of a possible pivot site Wenke may have intended to check on his route home. The location was near County Road 20 East and County Road D South. Upon arriving in the area, deputies located Weinke's vehicle approximately half a mile south of the pivot entrance on a minimum maintenance road. He was found deceased at the scene, the result of a vehicle accident.The investigation into the incident remains ongoing. Additional details will be released as they become available, the sheriff’s office said.

Missing Man Found Dead in Keith County Following Overnight Search

A local chapter of the Widows Sons motorcycle organization presented a $6,000 donation to Homestead Refuge on Friday morning, offering a significant boost to the nonprofit’s mission of supporting victims of sex trafficking in rural Nebraska.

The presentation took place during a live radio interview at Eagle Media in North Platte, where representatives from both groups spoke about their shared commitment to helping vulnerable individuals rebuild their lives.

Road Runner, Guardian of Membership for District 13 and a representative of the Widows Sons’ Western Travelers Chapter, said the funds were raised during the group’s annual state rally held in June. The Widows Sons, a fraternal motorcycle group made up of Master Masons, selected Homestead Refuge as the charitable beneficiary for this year’s event.

“We’re a charitable riding organization that focuses on helping widows, orphans, and anyone in need, especially those affected by abuse or hardship,” Road Runner said. “We’re proud of what we were able to raise with the help of our brothers from across the country.”

The Western Travelers Chapter includes nine fully patched members and two journeymen currently working toward full membership. The funds were raised through raffles, auctions, and other rally activities.

Accepting the donation on behalf of Homestead Refuge was Betty Remus, a volunteer who has been instrumental in the organization’s development.

Located in rural Lincoln County, Homestead Refuge offers a safe haven for survivors of sex trafficking, providing peace, privacy, and healing in a country setting. The home features animals and quiet outdoor spaces to aid in recovery.

“We’re a place where survivors can escape the chaos and begin the long process of healing,” Remus said. “This donation means the world to us, especially as we work to sustain and grow our program with limited staff and funding.”

Homestead Refuge currently employs one paid staff member, thanks to a private donor, with the remainder of operations handled by volunteers. The organization began about four years ago, when Remus and others repurposed an old family home into a shelter after feeling called to address the growing trafficking issue in the area.

August 1, 2025 (Lexington, Neb.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating multiple crashes that left several people injured and closed parts of I-80 for several hours Thursday.

The initial crash occurred just before 1:00 p.m. Thursday near mile marker 244 on I-80 westbound. A passenger vehicle suffered a blown-out tire and lost control. A semi hauling cattle attempted to avoid the other vehicle and overturned. Neither driver was injured. There were 36 cattle in the trailer. 21 survived the crash.

As the first crash was nearing the end of clean-up at approximately 6:50 p.m., a second crash occurred approximately one mile east of the first crash. An NDOT arrow truck was parked on the shoulder of westbound I-80, directing traffic to move into the passing lane. A westbound semi then rear-ended the arrow truck.

The driver of the NDOT pickup suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. He has been with NDOT for 14 years. The driver of the semi was transported to Lexington Regional Health Center with minor injuries.

The second crash required the closure of westbound I-80. At approximately 7:40 p.m., while additional troopers were directing westbound traffic off I-80 at the Overton interchange, at mile marker 248, a Chevrolet Sonic drove around the barricade and continued westbound. Near mile marker 246, the Chevrolet rear-ended traffic that was moving slowly because of the previous crash. The vehicle hit both a Dodge 1500 pickup and a semi-trailer.

The driver of the Chevrolet and two occupants from the Dodge were all transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Chevrolet has been cited for DUI, possession of an open alcohol container, and driving on a closed roadway.

Nebraska State Patrol Investigating Three Crashes Within Two Miles in Dawson County

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (Aug. 1, 2025) — The federal building in downtown North Platte now bears a new name, honoring a historic figure in Nebraska politics — former Congresswoman Virginia Smith.

A formal ceremony held this week commemorated the renaming of the building after Smith, who represented Nebraska’s Third Congressional District from 1975 to 1991. She remains the only woman from the state to have served in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The renaming was made possible through legislation introduced in 2024 by members of Nebraska’s federal delegation.

“Her legacy is still all over this Third District,” said Anna Castner Wightman, a former congressional staffer for Smith. “To come from these small towns and help Mrs. Smith serve a district and state we love, and watch her masterfully bring home projects like the Valentine Weather Station and the Heartland Expressway — it was inspiring.”

Current Third District Congressman Adrian Smith praised his predecessor’s dedication and work ethic.

“To serve in her footsteps is an honor,” he said. “She led the way with hard work, traveling the district and really setting the example for how to best serve Nebraskans.”

Lincoln County Commissioner Micaela Wuehler, the first woman elected to the board, called Smith a trailblazer.

“Virginia Smith was more than just the first congresswoman from Nebraska; she broke barriers with grace and grit,” Wuehler said. “She elevated agriculture on the national stage and showed what strong, compassionate representation looks like.”

A similar dedication ceremony is scheduled Friday in Lexington, where the post office will be renamed in honor of William E. and Elsie L. Barrett.
