North Platte, NE- NebraskaLand University is proud to announce the acceptance of thirty-seven area high school seniors into its program. On Monday, October 7, 2024, these students will begin their journey of financial education.

NebraskaLand University is committed to helping students make informed financial decisions in their future. With the help of&nbsp;Senior and Executive Officers at NebraskaLand Bank, these high school seniors will be well-equipped to make the best decisions for their future.

NebraskaLand University consists of six courses covering important topics such as budgeting, savings, credit, loans, career and wealth development, and identity theft protection. Upon completion of the program and meeting all requirements, graduates will be awarded a $250.00 academic scholarship.&nbsp;Additionally, graduates will participate in an essay contest where they compete for larger scholarships. The first-place winner will receive a total of $1,000 in scholarships, the second-place winner will earn $750, and the third-place winner will receive $500. This initiative not only provides valuable financial education but also rewards academic excellence and encourages further advancement in students.

Nebraska Department of Transportation

(North Platte, Neb.) — Work underway on N-25, from reference post 92.6 to reference post 104.75, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation. 

Werner Construction, LLC of Hastings is the contractor for this project. Work includes bridge repairs, guardrail remodel, asphalt overlay, and earth shoulder construction. Traffic will be maintained with lane restrictions and a pilot car with flaggers or temporary traffic signals. A 12-foot width restriction will be in effect. Anticipated completion is Nov. 2025. 

The purpose of these projects is to preserve the transportation asset, improve the reliability of the transportation system, and perpetuate the mobility of the traveling public. 

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and to put phones down.

Work Underway on N-25, South of Sutherland

United States Attorney Susan Lehr announced that John Hernandez, a/k/a “Hboy,” age 36, last of Lincoln, Nebraska, but formerly of North Platte, Nebraska, was sentenced September 26, 2024, in federal court in Lincoln for distribution of 5 grams or more of actual methamphetamine. United States District Judge Susan M. Bazis sentenced Hernandez to a total of 145 months’ imprisonment. There is no parole in the federal system. After Hernandez’s release from prison, he will begin a 5-year term of supervised release.

Beginning in 2021, the FBI and CODE Drug Task Force opened an investigation into drug trafficking in the North Platte, Nebraska area. In March of 2022, law enforcement set up a controlled buy over Facebook with a third party. In the course of the buy, Hernandez was observed approaching the buy location. He was also heard on the recorded audio associated with the buy. Through surveillance and debriefings, law enforcement learned that Hernandez was the source of the meth that was sold during the controlled buy.

Law enforcement knew Hernandez to be a major source of both meth and fentanyl in the North Platte area. Law enforcement had taken reports from other drug users, concerned about Hernandez selling drugs, particularly fentanyl to young people.

In February of 2023, law enforcement responded to Hernandez’s residence and observed an 11-year-old who appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance. In April of 2023, they recovered a Colorado runaway who had been staying at Hernandez’s house and reported using fentanyl there. The runaway was also in possession of paraphernalia frequently used to ingest fentanyl.

Hernandez’s house was the subject of a search warrant executed in May of 2023. During the execution of that warrant, Hernandez gave a&nbsp;Mirandized&nbsp;statement to officers, advising them that he was working to gather funds and planned to travel to Julesburg, Colorado to re-up his drug supply. He stated he planned on purchasing four ounces of meth and at least 100 fentanyl pills.

After being arrested in this case in Lincoln, Hernandez again gave a&nbsp;Mirandized&nbsp;statement to law enforcement. He identified himself as being the biggest meth dealer in North Platte. In talking about his various sources, Hernandez advised that he had purchased and sold at least 100 ounces of meth and approximately 2400 fentanyl pills while dealing in North Platte.

In imposing the sentence, Judge Bazis noted that Hernandez had a lengthy criminal history, which included domestic assault convictions. She surmised that Hernandez, when using drugs, is a violent and dangerous person. She also noted that investigation revealed multiple children were living in the home with Hernandez while he was dealing drugs, and he exposed them to hazardous, if not outright lethal, substances, concluding that “you have got to protect kids.”

This case was investigated by the CODE Task Force which is made up of law enforcement agencies throughout a 22-county area in west-central/southwest Nebraska and includes the North Platte Police Department, Dawson County Sheriff’s Office, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Red Willow County Sheriff’s Office, Frontier County Sheriff’s Office, Nebraska State Patrol, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). The Lincoln Police Department’s Safe Streets Taskforce also assisted in the arrest of Hernandez.

Former North Platte Man Sentenced for Methamphetamine Distribution

KEARNEY – Peyton Neff is an unquestioned leader for the University of Nebraska at Kearney volleyball team.

One of the most experienced players on this year’s roster, the North Platte native has learned to embrace her role as a team captain.

“Being a setter, I feel like that leadership aspect is important, no matter what age you are,” Neff said. “That’s something that Maddie helped me recognize early on.”

Maddie Squiers is an assistant coach for the third-ranked Lopers, someone who’s built a trusting relationship with Neff over the past three years and played a key part in her development.

“Whenever coach (Rick) Squiers really wants something out of Peyton, he kind of goes through me,” Squiers said of her father, who’s led the UNK volleyball program since 1999. “He gives me a lot of feedback to give to Peyton. And Peyton feels comfortable coming to me with questions.”

A three-time all-conference performer and two-time all-state selection, Neff was a do-it-all player for North Platte, finishing her high school career with more than 2,200 assists, 700 digs, 400 kills and 100 aces.

The 2018 North Platte Telegraph Player of the Year committed to UNK in fall 2020, following in the footsteps of multiple family members. Her mother, Pam (Sis) Jorgensen, played basketball for the Lopers and her father, P.D., was on the baseball team. Neff’s aunt, Tam (Sis) Kuenle, was an all-conference volleyball player for Kearney State College who still ranks in the top 10 in program history in solo blocks, total blocks and sets played.

That family connection is really cool – “There’s a picture of my mom in the Health and Sports Center with her crazy hairdo from back in the day,” Neff said with a laugh – but it’s not the main reason why she chose UNK.

“I liked that it was close to home and it was such a successful program,” she explained. “I knew that I was coming to a program that wanted to win.”

However, that success comes with increased pressure.

Neff admits she was “very scared” when she arrived on campus as a freshman. Fortunately, there was someone here to calm those nerves.

Squiers played club volleyball with Neff’s older sister, Alex, before starting her college career at Bellevue University, where she was a two-time NAIA All-American.

She transferred to UNK in 2018 and redshirted that year, then joined the starting rotation in 2019, when the Lopers put together one of the best seasons in program history. They went 38-1 and reached the NCAA Division II national championship match for just the second time.

When the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the 2020 season, Squiers received another year of eligibility, allowing her to come back as a sixth-year senior in 2021.

“That whole year was just really unique,” she said. “We still joke about it. The freshmen who came in during my sixth year, they were in seventh grade when I was a senior in high school. So it was a really interesting dynamic having teammates who were so much younger than me.”

The odd situation ended up being a major benefit for Neff, who learned from the veteran setter during her redshirt year.

“It was really valuable to have somebody ahead of me who was super experienced, knew volleyball so well and was so dedicated to the program,” Neff said.

“Even playing on the other side during practice, it was frustrating, but also fun to get to play against her,” she added with a smile.

The Lopers went 26-7 that season and qualified for the Division II national tournament for the 22nd straight year. Squiers led the team with 1,338 assists and a program-record 53 aces while playing in all 115 sets. She was named a Division II All-American and All-MIAA First Team selection for the second time.

“I knew my last year that Peyton was going to be the setter after me, so I really felt like I had the mindset of taking her under my wing, teaching her and giving her feedback,” said Squiers, who continues to provide this mentorship as an assistant coach.

When Squiers transitioned from the court to the bench, that wasn’t the only change she wanted to see.

She encouraged Neff to develop her own identity and do things her way.

“You have to have your own style, your own leadership style, your own way of running things,” Squiers said. “And it’s been really cool to see that evolve. She’s grown so much from her freshman year to where she is now.”

The Lopers are 69-12 since Neff became the starting setter in 2022, including a perfect 12-0 record to start this season. She’s played in all but three sets during that time, earning All-MIAA First Team honors in both 2022 and 2023. Neff was also selected as a Division II All-American and First Team All-Region performer last year.

She’s been equally successful in the classroom, receiving the MIAA Excellence Award for a perfect 4.0 GPA the past three years. Neff graduated summa cum laude in May with a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.unk.edu/academics/psychology/index.php">bachelor’s degree in psychology</a>&nbsp;and she’s currently enrolled in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.unk.edu/academics/csp/school_psychology.php">school psychology graduate program</a>.

The MIAA Setter of the Week twice this season, she ranks ninth in program history with 3,114 career assists – one spot ahead of Squiers. But that’s not a stat either of them cares about.

Like any good leader, they’re both focused team goals: a conference championship and 25th consecutive trip to the national tournament.

“Looking back at the last few years, we’ve made it to the conference championship but didn’t win, so I would really like to make it to the championship again and win this year,” Neff said. “There were so many championships before I got here, so it’d be cool to be able to win one.”

Neff’s aunt, Tam (Sis) Kuenle, was an all-conference volleyball player for Kearney State College who still ranks in the top 10 in program history in solo blocks, total blocks and sets played.That family connection is really cool – “There’s a picture of my mom in the Health and Sports Center with her crazy hairdo from back in the day,” Neff said with a laugh – but it’s not the main reason why she chose UNK.“I liked that it was close to home and it was such a successful program,” she explained. “I knew that I was coming to a program that wanted to win.”However, that success comes with increased pressure.Neff admits she was “very scared” when she arrived on campus as a freshman. Fortunately, there was someone here to calm those nerves.<figure>

 </figure><h2>VALUABLE ROLE MODEL</h2>Squiers played club volleyball with Neff’s older sister, Alex, before starting her college career at Bellevue University, where she was a two-time NAIA All-American.She transferred to UNK in 2018 and redshirted that year, then joined the starting rotation in 2019, when the Lopers put together one of the best seasons in program history. They went 38-1 and reached the NCAA Division II national championship match for just the second time.When the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the 2020 season, Squiers received another year of eligibility, allowing her to come back as a sixth-year senior in 2021.“That whole year was just really unique,” she said. “We still joke about it. The freshmen who came in during my sixth year, they were in seventh grade when I was a senior in high school. So it was a really interesting dynamic having teammates who were so much younger than me.”The odd situation ended up being a major benefit for Neff, who learned from the veteran setter during her redshirt year.“It was really valuable to have somebody ahead of me who was super experienced, knew volleyball so well and was so dedicated to the program,” Neff said.“Even playing on the other side during practice, it was frustrating, but also fun to get to play against her,” she added with a smile.The Lopers went 26-7 that season and qualified for the Division II national tournament for the 22nd straight year. Squiers led the team with 1,338 assists and a program-record 53 aces while playing in all 115 sets. She was named a Division II All-American and All-MIAA First Team selection for the second time.“I knew my last year that Peyton was going to be the setter after me, so I really felt like I had the mindset of taking her under my wing, teaching her and giving her feedback,” said Squiers, who continues to provide this mentorship as an assistant coach.<figure>

 </figure><h2>FIND YOUR STYLE</h2>When Squiers transitioned from the court to the bench, that wasn’t the only change she wanted to see.She encouraged Neff to develop her own identity and do things her way.“You have to have your own style, your own leadership style, your own way of running things,” Squiers said. “And it’s been really cool to see that evolve. She’s grown so much from her freshman year to where she is now.”The Lopers are 69-12 since Neff became the starting setter in 2022, including a perfect 12-0 record to start this season. She’s played in all but three sets during that time, earning All-MIAA First Team honors in both 2022 and 2023. Neff was also selected as a Division II All-American and First Team All-Region performer last year.She’s been equally successful in the classroom, receiving the MIAA Excellence Award for a perfect 4.0 GPA the past three years. Neff graduated summa cum laude in May with a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.unk.edu/academics/psychology/index.php">bachelor’s degree in psychology</a>&nbsp;and she’s currently enrolled in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.unk.edu/academics/csp/school_psychology.php">school psychology graduate program</a>.The MIAA Setter of the Week twice this season, she ranks ninth in program history with 3,114 career assists – one spot ahead of Squiers. But that’s not a stat either of them cares about.Like any good leader, they’re both focused team goals: a conference championship and 25th consecutive trip to the national tournament.“Looking back at the last few years, we’ve made it to the conference championship but didn’t win, so I would really like to make it to the championship again and win this year,” Neff said. “There were so many championships before I got here, so it’d be cool to be able to win one.”<figure>

City of North Platte and Municipal Light says beware of utility scam

United States Attorney Susan Lehr announced that Nikki Guerra, age 46, of North Platte, Nebraska, was sentenced on September 26, 2024, in federal court in Lincoln, Nebraska for one count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. Senior United States District Judge John M. Gerrard sentenced Guerra to a total of 31 months’ imprisonment. There is no parole in the federal system. After Guerra’s release from prison, she will begin a 5-year term of supervised release.

On October 15, 2023, officers with the North Platte Police Department stopped a vehicle owned by Guerra as it entered North Platte for at traffic violation. From prior intel, officers suspected the vehicle had been involved in the distribution of narcotics and suspected narcotics were currently in the vehicle at the time of the stop.

Both Guerra and the driver were asked to step back to patrol cars while officers checked their identification, and a drug dog was deployed while the traffic stop was in progress. The dog alerted to the presence of narcotics and officers conducted a probable cause search of the vehicle. In a XL men’s sized jacket pocket, officers located a pound of meth. The jacket was located on the floor of the passenger’s side seat where Guerra was sitting at the time of the stop.

The recovered meth was sent to the state crime lab where it was tested and confirmed to meth, with a purity of 95.7% for a total of 400 grams actual meth.

In sentencing Ms. Guerra, Judge Gerrard complimented the work she had done since being arrested to address her substance abuse issues.&nbsp;

This case was investigated by the North Platte Police Department.

The NWS states any fire started can quickly spread with a wind gust and can be difficult to control. Temperatures for the coverage area range anywhere from the 60s to the near 80s. Vets, military get bonus hunt weekend added to waterfowl season

(Gering, Neb.) — Today, the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT), together with the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP), held a ceremony to celebrate the signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between first responders in Banner, Cheyenne, Deuel, Kimball and Scotts Bluff Counties.

Formalized Traffic Incident Management (TIM) partnerships in the Nebraska Panhandle support NDOT and its safety partners progress in moving TIM initiatives forward to improve safety for all, reliability and efficiency on the roadway. This marks a major milestone in the NDOT program, which has been working for over a decade to advance TIM in targeted areas. 

“The signing of this MOU is a significant achievement for our TIM Program and a testament to the dedication of our first responders in the Nebraska Panhandle. By formalizing our partnerships, we’re strengthening our collective response, reducing incident clearance times and, most importantly, protecting the lives of first responders and the traveling public. We are proud to stand with our partners today to celebrate this milestone and reaffirm our shared commitment to keeping Nebraska’s roadways moving safely,” shared Mick Syslo, NDOT Deputy Director of Operations.

At the ceremony, NDOT, NSP and local first responders spoke about the critical work our responders do to keep roadways safe in Nebraska and raise awareness to travelers about the dangerous work responders take on every day.

Our partnership is crucial for improving road safety and ensuring our responders are better supported. Chase County Public Schools Officials release statement following Nebraska State Auditor report of school using nutrition funds to buy new videoboards

LINCOLN — The Nebraska State Auditor has taken to task a southwest Nebraska school district for what he views as an improper use of nearly $125,000 from a student nutrition fund to help buy a pair of “massive video scoreboards” installed in the school gym.

Thursday, Auditor Mike Foley described the purchase by the Chase County School District as a “direct violation of the guidance issued to the school district from the Nebraska Department of Education” on how to use a surplus from the nonprofit school food account.

“All in all, the school district acted improperly in this expenditure and used sleight-of-hand tactics with the NDE to make an extravagant expenditure on gymnasium equipment using federal child nutrition dollars,” Foley said in a&nbsp;<a href="https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?ogbl#inbox/FMfcgzQXJQMkbsRGrRtpNkjTSbFLsBCL?projector=1&amp;messagePartId=0.1" target="_blank">news release</a>&nbsp;related to a letter&nbsp;<a href="https://auditors.nebraska.gov/APA_Reports/2024/OE992610-09262024-September_26_2024_Chase_County_School_District_Letter.pdf" target="_blank">issued Thursday</a>&nbsp;to the school district.

A response from a law firm representing the school district was included in the&nbsp;<a href="https://auditors.nebraska.gov/APA_Reports/2024/OE992610-09262024-September_26_2024_Chase_County_School_District_Letter.pdf" target="_blank">audit team’s findings.</a>&nbsp;It said the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.chasecountyschools.org/" target="_blank">Chase County district</a>&nbsp;was confident it “appropriately and transparently” purchased the video display boards after consulting with the NDE, and was “heartened” that its regular annual auditor agreed.

The law firm said that while the boards are used for sports, they also display nutritional information. It said the district has a long-standing practice in which students line up on the walking track of the gym, where the boards communicate nutrition information to students on their way to the cafeteria.&nbsp;

Snapping back further, the law firm called it “unfortunate” that Foley’s office spent public resources toward an inquiry spurred “solely for the private gratification” of a “disgruntled” school board member.&nbsp;

Of the audit team’s letter, the law firm said: “It reflects a lack of knowledge of the practices of Chase County Schools and an assumption of bad faith that is as unwarranted and inappropriate.”

However, the district response did say the school district was ready to take corrective action if directed to do so by either the Nebraska Department of Education or the U.S. Department of Agriculture.&nbsp;

Foley said he has referred his team’s findings to the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office and to the State Department of Education for further review of possible misappropriation of public funds or violations of federal regulations.

He recommended that the school district work with state education officials to determine how much money should be returned to the school nutrition account.&nbsp;

The State Department of Education and the Attorney General’s Office did not immediately respond to a reporter’s query on whether, or how, they might pursue the matter.

The state audit team’s criticisms — and a lengthy response from school district lawyers — were included in the 14-page letter addressed to Karl Meeske, board president of Chase County Schools.

The issue dates back to a Feb. 15 letter from the State Department of Education to Chase County school officials, noting that the nonprofit food service account exceeded its allowable amount of cash resources.

The NDE offered examples of ways to spend the excess, including improving the quality of meals and introducing new or improved salad bar options. It gave a deadline to submit a plan.&nbsp;

Adam Lambert, district superintendent, subsequently sent a letter listing items that the district was considering, including new lunch tables, kitchen appliances and a digital menu board.

The district’s Board of Education later voted to approve new display boards for the Longhorn gym.

The audit team said that neither board minutes nor the agenda specifies that Lambert planned to use excess school nutrition funds for the scoreboards.

Furthermore, the audit team said that it emailed the State Department of Education to ask specifically if the department would have approved using the excess funds to replace gym scoreboards, not located in the cafeteria, with two new 16-foot-by-9-foot LED scoreboards, including annual software and support for sports apps.

According to the audit team, the response was: “Absolutely not.”&nbsp;

The district’s lawyers said it understood otherwise from the NDE and that the purchase of display boards “to be used in part for the lunch program was an appropriate use of school lunch funds to the extent that the district reasonably appropriated their use for that purpose to the funds.”

MPCC Board of Governors meeting recap

Lexington, Neb. - A pilot was transported to the hospital Wednesday evening following a helicopter crash that occurred outside of Lexington according to officials.

According to the Dawson County Sheriff's Office (DCSO), just a little after 6:00pm on Wednesday, the DCSO received a report of a downed aircraft outside of Lexington. The DCSO responded with Dawson County Emergency Management, Lexington Fire and Rescue, Dawson Public Power, Nebraska State Patrol, and the Nebraska Department of Transportation.

A helicopter was spraying an herbicide in the Platte River for vegetation and struck a Dawson Public Power transmission lines resulting in the lines falling across I-80. The aircraft was owned by Provine Helicopters out of Greenwood, Mississippi.

Due to the power lines falling across I-80, I-80 was closed in both directions from mile marker 222 to mile marker 237. Dawson Public Power was notified and responded to the scene and cleared the lines from the interstate. Residents in the area were without electricity for a short time.

The pilot was transported to Lexington Regional Hospital to be treated for his injuries. The pilot's name is not being released at this time. The FAA and NTSB were notified.

WASHINGTON -- FEMA announced that federal disaster assistance is available to the state of Nebraska to supplement recovery efforts in the areas affected by the severe storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes&nbsp;and flooding from June 20 – July 8, 2024.&nbsp;

Public Assistance federal funding is available to the state, tribal and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the severe storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes&nbsp;and flooding in&nbsp;Boyd, Clay, Dakota, Dawson, Douglas, Fillmore, Holt, Howard, Lincoln, McPherson, Nance, Nemaha, Saunders, Scotts Bluff, Thomas&nbsp;and Washington Counties.&nbsp;

Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide.&nbsp;

Andrew P. Meyer has been named as the Federal Coordinating Officer for federal recovery operations in the affected area. Additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the state and warranted by the results of further assessments.&nbsp;

FEMAWASHINGTON -- FEMA announced that federal disaster assistance is available to the state of Nebraska to supplement recovery efforts in the areas affected by the severe storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes&nbsp;and flooding from June 20 – July 8, 2024.&nbsp;Public Assistance federal funding is available to the state, tribal and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the severe storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes&nbsp;and flooding in&nbsp;Boyd, Clay, Dakota, Dawson, Douglas, Fillmore, Holt, Howard, Lincoln, McPherson, Nance, Nemaha, Saunders, Scotts Bluff, Thomas&nbsp;and Washington Counties.&nbsp;Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide.&nbsp;Andrew P. Meyer has been named as the Federal Coordinating Officer for federal recovery operations in the affected area. Additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the state and warranted by the results of further assessments.&nbsp;

<a>September 25, 2024 (LINCOLN, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;</a>—&nbsp;&nbsp;Harvest season is underway, and the Nebraska State Patrol encourages all motorists to be aware of agriculture equipment traveling on roads throughout the state.

“Agriculture plays a major role in our state. As ag producers continue their harvest, all motorists should stay alert for slow-moving ag implements,” said Captain Martin Denton, Commander of NSP Carrier Enforcement. “Due to&nbsp;their dimensions and loads, operator visibility is often reduced, so we encourage drivers to stay cautious when approaching, following, or attempting to pass farm vehicles.”

Agricultural products are moved across the country using various forms of transportation. According to the Bureau of Transportation, 2,259,610 trucks carry agricultural goods from farms to markets. Many producers use a harvest permit to transport their products, which offers several benefits, including an overweight allowance of up to 15 percent (within 70 miles of the source of the load) above the state limit. To use this exemption, product owners must provide haulers with a signed statement of origin and destination,&nbsp;<a href="https://statepatrol.nebraska.gov/sites/default/files/form_for_overweight_exception_-_2022-23_revision.pdf" target="_blank">such as this example.</a>

When transporting these loads, haulers should prioritize vehicle safety by conducting pre-trip inspections, complying with traffic laws, displaying warning signs on machinery, using flashing yellow caution lights, and staying aware of vehicles attempting to pass.

The North Platte Young Professionals are excited to announce the 2024 Finalists in the Big Idea North Platte business pitch contest. There were many unique and thorough submissions this year that will have a chance to pitch at the Live Event on October 23rd, 2024.

There are eight finalists for the Community Category: Dustin Uerling, Christopher Vogt, Jessi Bates, Miguel Sierra, Gage Norman, Patricia Phalen, Rebecca Brittenham, and Lori Buckingham.

There are ten finalists for the Youth Category: Kaelyn Brandt &amp; Anelle DeKlerk, Jaxon Braithwait, Tucker Kemp, Ben Heirigs, Tim Blakely, Lane Citta, Ashley Gartner, Weston Hammond &amp; Bennett Korensky, Miranda Huggenberger, and Coltan Ham &amp; MaKenna Nelson.

Big Idea North Platte business pitch contest is taking place on Wednesday, October 23rd at Venue 304, located at 304 East 5th Street, North Platte.

The Social for Big Idea North Platte begins at 5:00pm. The main event starts at 6:00pm when the top eight finalists in the community category, the top ten in the youth category give a two-minute idea pitch and then go through a short question and answer session. From there, they will be narrowed down to the top five finalists. The judges will select the top 5 in the community category and top three for the youth category. Once the top finalists are announced, audience members &amp; judges combined will decide who takes home the first, second, and third place prizes. Contestants are encouraged to bring their friends, colleagues, and fans to secure their place. There is no admission fee to attend Big Idea North Platte.

Prize money has been pledged by Eagle Communications through the Schmidt Foundation for the Community Category. Winners will receive: first place - $10,000, second place - $5,000, and third place - $2,500.&nbsp; Scholarships for the Youth Category will be awarded for those who win in the amount of: first place- $2,500, second place $1,500, and third place $1,000.&nbsp; These scholarships can be used as tuition waivers for those who are enrolled at Mid Plains Community College, at any of the campuses, however cannot be used for dual credit course work.
