OGALLALA, Neb. (Aug. 20, 2025) — The Lake Mac Casino Resort and Racetrack officially opened Tuesday in Ogallala, drawing nearly 1,000 people to a daylong celebration that featured horse racing, sports betting and a visit from Gov. Jim Pillen.

The $31 million facility includes more than 300 slot machines, electronic table games and the Draft Day sports lounge, which offers sports betting, simulcast racing and full food service.

Ole’s Steakhouse of Paxton catered a free meal before the ribbon cutting, preparing for 600 guests but running out of food as more than 900 people streamed through the gates.

Pillen praised the Kehl family, the Iowa-based developers behind the project, for their investment in Nebraska.

“It’s really important that we never, ever take each other for granted,” Pillen told the crowd. “I want to support the economic development and incredible tourism this casino brings, and give a shoutout to the Kehl family for their incredible investment here in Ogallala.”

The Kehls, longtime operators in the gaming and hospitality industry, also own and operate the Grand Island Casino and Resort at Fonner Park. The family has invested more than $250 million in Nebraska between the two projects. The Ogallala site has created 125 jobs so far and is expected to employ about 400 once fully built out.

Mary Wilson, executive director of Keith County Area Development, called the opening a milestone for the community.

“It was a momentous day for Ogallala and for the great state of Nebraska,” Wilson said. “This represents years of vision, planning and tireless work behind the scenes.”

After the ribbon cutting, the first horse race was won by Dear Dash, followed by two more races as the casino doors opened around 4 p.m.

The current casino space is temporary, but plans call for the facility to nearly double in size with additional restaurants, convention space and live table games. The casino expects to replace its electronic table games with live dealers next March.

The festival kicks off at 10:30 a.m. with a parade along Main Street, winding down to the park where events continue throughout the day. Highlights include a prime rib lunch, car show, tractor display, local vendors, and the Hershey Volunteer Fire Department’s popular water fight. Other crowd favorites are set to return as well, including Cow Pie Bingo and the Beer Olympics at Kathy’s Place.

“This festival really brings everyone together all day,” said Lions Club member Justin Petska. “There’s something for everyone, from families at the park to folks who just want to come out and enjoy the concert at night.”

The evening festivities open at 5 p.m. with a beer garden and food vendors, followed by live music. Drew Phillips will open the show before Donahew takes the stage downtown against the backdrop of the Union Pacific Railroad tracks — a setting organizers say makes the event unique.

Advance tickets are $20 and available at Hershey State Bank locations in North Platte and Hershey, as well as online at outhousetickets.com. Tickets will also be available at the gate for $25. Drinks will be sold on a ticket system, with beer and seltzers available for $5 each.

Petska said the festival has become the Lions Club’s biggest fundraiser, helping to support community projects throughout the year. He credited sponsors and local support for making the event possible.

“When you see a thousand people packed into Main Street in Hershey, it’s pretty special,” Petska said. “We couldn’t put on a weekend like this without the help of our sponsors and the community.

Casey Donahew to Headline Hershey Fall Festival on Saturday (Podcast)

JULESBURG, Colo. (Aug. 19, 2025) — A Colorado man has been indicted in connection with a July homicide in Missouri after investigators tracked leads across state lines, authorities said.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office in Missouri said deputies responded July 18 to a 911 call reporting an unresponsive man in the driveway of a home in the 1300 block of Finney Road in Robertsville. The victim, identified as 46-year-old Jared Bodine, was found with a gunshot wound and later died at Mercy Hospital in Washington, Mo.

Detectives opened a homicide investigation and, following weeks of work, traveled to Morgan County and Sedgwick County in Colorado to pursue leads. On Aug. 13, a Franklin County grand jury issued a no-bond indictment for 40-year-old Zachary J. Pankonin of Julesburg, charging him with first-degree murder and armed criminal action.

Franklin County Sheriff Steve Pelton credited cooperation from Colorado law enforcement, including Morgan County Sheriff David Martin and Sedgwick County Sheriff Koby Quayle, in helping investigators move the case forward.

“This investigation is still ongoing,” Pelton said in a statement, noting no further details are being released. “I would like to thank our investigators for their tireless work and dedication to bring justice to the victim.”

NORTH PLATTE, Neb - West Central District Health Department (WCDHD) has confirmed the first positive human case of West Nile Virus in the jurisdiction for the 2025 season. “Our thoughts are with this individual and their loved ones,” said Meghan Trevino, Executive Director of WCDHD. “Behind every case is a person, and this is a reminder that West Nile virus is not just something we track in mosquitoes, it can have real impacts on people in our own community.”

West Nile Virus is the leading cause of mosquito-borne disease in the United States. The virus is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes become infected after feeding on a bird that carries the virus and then may spread it to people.

Most people who are infected with West Nile Virus have no symptoms or only mild flu-like symptoms. Less than 1% of those infected become severely ill. However, individuals over age 50 and those with weakened immune systems are especially vulnerable and more likely to experience serious complications.

Mosquito season isn’t over. Even though it is August, mosquito season is still very active in Nebraska.

“We know it’s easy to let your guard down as we head into the back-to-school season, but mosquitoes don’t follow the school calendar,” said Trevino. “We want to encourage everyone to take a few simple steps to protect themselves and their families.”

People can reduce their risk of West Nile Virus by following these prevention steps:

· Use EPA-registered insect repellents when outdoors, especially at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.

· Wear long sleeves and pants to reduce skin exposure when possible.

· Eliminate standing water around your home where mosquitoes lay eggs (for example, in buckets, flowerpots, old tires, or birdbaths).

· Install or repair window and door screens to keep mosquitoes out of your home.

To support prevention efforts, WCDHD is offering free mosquito repellent products to community members. Residents are encouraged to stop by the office at 820 South Maple Street in North Platte during regular business hours to pick up supplies. Eagle Media Wins Two Pinnacle Awards at Nebraska Broadcasters Association Event

OGALLALA, Neb. (Aug. 18, 2025) — The body of an adult man was recovered Monday at Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area following a search that began the previous evening, officials said.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission said conservation officers received a report around 7:53 p.m. Sunday of an overturned kayak found near the Lemoyne Bay boat ramp. The kayak was empty, and no one had been reported missing in the area as of 5 p.m. Monday.

Conservation officers, along with Keystone Lemoyne Fire and Rescue and the Keith County Sheriff’s Office, searched the water using sonar until dark Sunday. Crews resumed operations Monday after a morning storm moved through the area.

The man’s body was recovered about 1:05 p.m. Mountain time by the Keystone Lemoyne Fire and Rescue dive team.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the cause of death and help identify the victim. Authorities said the incident remains under investigation and no further information will be released until the man’s identity is confirmed and family members are notified.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) — The Schmidt Foundation, the charitable arm of Eagle Media, has awarded a $20,000 donation to Lincoln County CASA to support its work advocating for abused and neglected children.

Lincoln County CASA — short for Court Appointed Special Advocates — recruits and trains volunteers who are appointed by judges to represent the best interests of children in the court system.

Director Janet Vath said the funds will be used to enhance training programs for new advocates and help the organization keep pace with growing needs. She also noted that CASA is actively seeking more volunteers.

“CASA gives children in the system a voice,” Vath said. “We’re grateful for this gift from the Schmidt Foundation, but we also need more people willing to step forward and serve.”

CASA volunteers are community members who complete about 30 hours of training before being assigned to a case. Once appointed, they typically spend 4 to 6 hours a month gathering information, preparing reports, and advocating for a child until the case is resolved, a process that usually takes 12 to 18 months.<a href="https://www.lincolncountynebcasa.org/our-impact"> Click here to become a volunteer.</a>

The fatalities came from 15 separate crashes. Among the 11 vehicle occupants who died, five were not wearing seatbelts, two were buckled in, and seatbelt use was unknown for four others.

Eight of the deaths happened in rural areas, including two on the interstate and six on other highways. Eight others were on local roads. The toll also included three pedestrians, two motorcyclists and two all-terrain vehicle riders.

The July total marks a decline from a year earlier, when 24 people died on Nebraska roads. So far in 2025, 117 people have died in 107 crashes between January and July, a 25% drop from the same stretch of 2024, when 146 people were killed in 131 crashes.

Seatbelt use continues to be a major factor: of the 94 vehicle occupants killed this year, just 35 were wearing one, the DOT said.

The data, compiled by the agency’s Highway Safety Section, is current as of Aug. 14.

If you’re a trout chaser, Lake Ogallala is still the place to be. The river and canal below the lake are giving up plenty of fish, and some bigger trout are starting to show up right in the lake itself.

Prefer whiskers over fins? Catfish at Lake Mac are on the prowl this month, biting best from dusk to dawn pretty much anywhere you drop a line. Just remember — the later it gets, the taller your stories get.

During the day, smallmouth bass are still hitting hard along the rocky points on the south side and the face of the dam. Walleye hunters are finding some action too — 25 to 30 feet down with crankbaits is the magic recipe.

Available docks: Divers Bay, Martin Bay low water, both docks at Lake Ogallala, and the fishing dock in the northwest corner.

Lake McConaughy’s water temperature is about 77 degrees, elevation 3,225.3 feet. Inflows from the North Platte River are running around 650 cubic feet per second, with outflows at about 2,500. For the full water-level breakdown, check the CNPPID site once they update their numbers.

It’s still camping season, so grab your spot at outdoornebraska.gov or call 844-637-2757. Campfires are allowed, but keep ’em in a pit under 3 feet and don’t turn your hot dogs into torches.

Lake Mac Report (August 15, 2025)

ALLIANCE, Neb. — Three people were injured in a motor vehicle crash in Alliance early Thursday evening, police said.

On Thursday, August 14th, at approximately 4:08 p.m., the Alliance Police Department received a 911 report of a motor vehicle accident with possible injuries at the intersection of 3rd Street and Laramie Avenue.

Responding officers arrived to find three vehicles involved. Two severely injured adults were located inside a red Jeep. The driver was slumped over, not breathing and had only a faint pulse. Officers quickly removed him from the vehicle, placed him on the roadway, and initiated life-saving measures, including CPR and the use of an AED. The Alliance Fire Department arrived shortly thereafter and assumed medical care.

The Jeep’s passenger sustained serious leg injuries and possible additional trauma. Officers applied a tourniquet to control severe bleeding before AFD personnel took over treatment.

A second vehicle, a white Chevrolet Silverado, had sustained heavy front-end damage. The driver suffered leg injuries from the head-on collision with the Jeep.

A third vehicle, a white GMC Yukon, was struck when the force of the initial impact pushed the Silverado backward into it. All occupants of the Yukon declined medical treatment.

Preliminary investigation and witness statements indicate that the Jeep was traveling westbound on 3rd Street from Laramie Avenue when the driver experienced a medical emergency, causing the vehicle to cross the center line into the path of the eastbound Chevrolet Silverado. The impact pushed the Silverado into the GMC Yukon.

The driver of the Jeep was transported to the hospital in critical condition. The Jeep’s passenger and the Silverado’s driver were transported in non-critical condition.

The Nebraska State Patrol conducted a full traffic reconstruction at the scene. The Alliance Police Department is handling the primary investigation. We would like to thank the Alliance Fire Department, Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office, Nebraska State Patrol, and the City of Alliance Streets Department for their quick and professional response.

The annual project gives students hands-on training from the foundation up, with proceeds from the silent auction funding scholarships for future building trades students.&nbsp;

The public can tour the home during open houses from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Aug. 22 and Aug. 25 on the college’s north campus, 1101 Halligan Drive. Individual tours are available by calling the North Campus Welcome Center at 308-535-3601.&nbsp;

This year’s house spans 1,886 square feet with three bedrooms, two and a half baths, Andersen 100 Series windows, LED lighting, high-performance insulation and LP SmartSide siding with a 30-year warranty. Interior features include solid hardwood floors, Shaker-style hickory cabinets, quartz countertops and a master shower with a full ceramic tile enclosure.&nbsp;

The home is wired for cable and telephones, but the buyer must install an electrical meter, main service disconnect, water heater, furnace and ventilation systems.&nbsp;

The minimum bid is $200,000, and bidders must be pre-qualified. North Platte — Thursday’s schedule at the Chase County Fair and Expo in Imperial features a mix of tradition and new attractions, including a rescheduled 4-H livestock sale and a first-time Hispanic concert.

Fair board member Jake Burke said the 4-H sale, typically held on Friday, will take place Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in the show barn. “If anyone wants to come out and support the kids for all their hard work, it’s in the show barn today,” Burke said. “Show them that their effort didn’t go unnoticed.”

Buyers at the sale can choose to process the animals, with processing spots available at area facilities.

Later in the evening, gates open at 7 p.m. for the Hispanic concert in the grandstand arena, featuring La Fiera at 8 p.m. Tickets are available online or at the fair ticket booth.

The fair’s carnival, billed as the largest in the area, continues Thursday. Day passes can be purchased at the carnival’s ticket booth, while “Mega Pass” wristbands — good for unlimited rides for the entire carnival run — are available through the fair’s website or ticket booth.

Sutherland to host Open House on small nuclear power plants

IMPERIAL, Neb. (Aug. 13, 2025) — The Chase County Fair in Imperial is hitting its stride this week with a packed schedule of family events, concerts, and traditional fair favorites running through Saturday night.

Jacob Burke, a member of the Chase County Fair Board, said Wednesday marked the week’s first “big day,” featuring family-oriented attractions like turtle races, a climbing wall sponsored by the Imperial Community Foundation, a homemade pie and ice cream social, and the opening of the carnival.

Thursday’s schedule includes the 4-H and FFA livestock sale — moved up from Friday for the first time — beginning at 5:30 p.m., followed by a new Hispanic concert at 8 p.m. Gates open at 7 p.m., and tickets are available online or at the fairgrounds.

The grandstand concerts kick off Friday with Ty Myers, Redferrin, and Anna Lucia, along with DJ Grant Fisher performing before and after the shows. Saturday’s entertainment will feature Hudson Westbrook, currently holding a Top 20 national hit, with Ned LeDoux opening.

Carnival rides run daily, with unlimited ride passes available. Other highlights include a parade Saturday morning, a car and motorcycle show, cornhole tournament, bingo, and free family shows throughout the fairgrounds.

Burke credited the fair’s 160 sponsors and a volunteer board for making the event possible each year. “We wouldn’t be able to do what we do without our sponsors and volunteers,” he said.
