Estherville, Iowa – Jada Thompson scored 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting to lead North Platte to a 55-33 win over Marshalltown Community College on Saturday.

Madison Cheleen added her first double digit performance of her collegiate career, finishing with 12 points to go along with her two rebounds and one steal. Zaily Marazin led the Knights on the glass with 10 rebounds to accompany her four points.

It was a low scoring first quarter despite North Platte jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the opening 1:27. The Knights used an 11-2 run capped off by a three from Dezirae Gonzales to take a 15-2 lead into the quarter break.

Marshalltown went on a 4-0 spurt to open the second quarter, before a 7-0 run extended the margin to 22-6. The Tigers were limited to just five more points for the remaining 6:06 of the quarter, as the Knights carried a 32-11 lead into the halftime break.

A 9-2 run to open the third quarter helped the Knights build a 41-13 lead. North Platte took their largest lead of the game at the 3:40 mark on a runner by EmmaJo Locks, 46-15. Marshalltown closed out the quarter on an 8-2 run to narrow the margin to 49-23 headed into the final frame.

The Tigers outscored the Knights 10-6 in the final quarter, but the large deficit could not be overcome in the final ten minutes.

North Platte (2-0) will travel south to take on McCook Community College on Tuesday. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m. inside the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center.

Knights defense aids in win over Marshalltown

“I am proud of the guys for battling at the end to give us a chance to win the game,” said head coach Jacob Brandl. “Laramie is a well-coached team, and they challenged us in the second half.”

Diao finished with 13 points to accompany his eight rebounds and six blocks, while Alex Harper and Sedrick Nari each notched 12 points, respectively.

Knights pushed their lead to 53-33 after a 10-3 run to open the second half. Laramie County responded to take their first lead of the game on a 31-3 run. A bucket by Justus Michael quieted the run, but the Golden Eagles weren’t done adding to their lead.

The deficit grew to eight before a North Platte 4-0 run cut the margin to 66-62. Laramie County answered by stretching their lead back to eight inside five minutes to play. North Platte made one last surge in the closing stages, but Laramie County held off the rally to complete the come from behind win.

In the opening half, Diao broke open the scoring before the Knights managed to push their lead to 16-6 on a pair of free throws by Michael. The Golden Eagles cut the margin to four twice over the next 6:29, but the Knights continued to hold the momentum.

An 8-2 run capped off by a Dennis Rocha contested runner in the lane pushed the margin back into double digits with 2:58 to play in the half. Knights continued to challenge the defense as they stretched their lead to 43-30 at the halftime break.

Knights (1-1) open the home portion of their schedule on Tuesday against Colby Community College. Tip is set for 7 p.m. inside the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium.

Knights fall in nailbiter to Golden Eagles

Columbus, Neb. – Knights volleyball fell in a tightly contested four set match to Central Community College in the Region IX Championship on Saturday.

Jaelyn Dicke led the way with 14 kills, 13 digs and two assisted blocks. Sydney Spillane totaled 10 kills while finishing the match with a .381 hitting percentage. EmiLee Walnofer posted 29 digs to accompany her five aces, while Aubrey Grant served up 42 set assists in the match.

Central jumped out to an 8-5 lead until a 5-1 run extended the margin midway through the set. Back-to-back kills from Grant and Ella Rotherham halted the run, until the Raiders settled back into their rhythm. The Raiders never relinquished their lead down the stretch to take set one, 25-14.

Looking to even the match, the Knights leapt out to a 7-4 lead on a kill from Nya Lual. A 10-2 rally midway through the set extended the Knights lead to 20-11, forcing Central to take a timeout. North Platte did not let the Raiders climb back into the set as they evened the match with a 25-14 set win.

An 8-2 rally helped the Raiders pull out to a 19-11 lead in the third set. North Platte countered the run with a 7-1 rally to pull back within two on an ace by Grant. Knights and Raiders traded points until a late 3-1 run sealed the set for Central.&nbsp;

Knights took an early lead in the fourth set on back-to-back kills from Zoe Maher and Grant. A 4-0 run pushed the Raiders back out front, 9-7. The set remained tight until a 4-0 run gave the Raiders a 20-16 lead. North Platte would not go down quietly knotting the game up at 23-23, but Central scored the final two points to close out the match.

The 2024 season comes to an end with the Knights posting a 14-24 overall record.

North Platte Community College started its season out with a bang by defeating Eastern Wyoming College 62-59. Head Coach Jacob Brandl highlighted the keys that led to the Knight's first victory of the season.&nbsp;

"Our youth showed out tonight. We did a ton of things really well and then would turn around and have really bad stretches." Coach Brandl described, "Our guys battled and played hard though, It's tough to win college basketball games and even harder to win on the road."

Freshman Dennis Rocha finished with a team-high 18 points and collected 9 rebounds. Jaxson Brandl also finished with 13 points off the bench in the victory.

"Guys stepped up and made plays when they needed to. Jaxson Brandl gave us a big spark in the first half, and Dennis was so good and tough on both ends," Brandl said.

It's a quick turnaround for the Knights as they will be on the road and battle against Laramie County Community College tomororw at 7 PM.

"We need to have a short memory and get our minds ready for a tough LCCC group. We have to find a way to stop turning the ball over because we left so many points on the board. I trust our guys, and I'm proud of the fight that this young group showed."

A key focus in building the 2025 schedule was prioritizing weekend matches to allow fans better opportunities to see the Supernovas in action. After a quick trip to face the Vegas Thrill on Jan. 17, Omaha returns home for a Sunday showdown against the San Diego Mojo on Jan. 19, who the Supernovas beat in the Champiosnhp Semifinal last season in the franchise’s first-ever reverse sweep. January ends with a road and home exchange with the Fury on Jan. 24 and Jan. 31.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Omaha opens February with the first of two three-match road trips, featuring stops against the Orlando Valkyries, League’s newest franchise, the Indy Ignite, and Atlanta. The Supernovas return home for another Sunday battle against the Mojo on Feb. 16 before heading out to San Diego looking for their first win in Viajas Arena on Feb. 20. The month ends with the Valkyries coming to CHI on Feb. 27 as Orlando looks to earn its first win over the Supernovas, finishing 0-4 against Omaha in 2024.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Afterwards, the Supernovas embark on another three-game road trip against Columbus, Indy and Orlando before returning for a four-match home stand. The No. 10 Nebraska rifle team will travel to Fort Worth, Texas, to face off against No. 6 TCU this Saturday, Nov. 2. The match is set to begin at 9 a.m. (central).The Huskers enter the match at 5-2 on the season after a strong weekend in Maryland two weeks ago. NU topped No. 11 Ole Miss, 4,705-4,694, No. 12 Memphis, 4,697-4,691 and split a pair of matches against No. 13 Navy. Freshman Maddy Moyer had an impressive day on Oct. 20, taking second place overall with an aggregate score of 1,180, and setting a personal best in the smallbore with a mark of 587.&nbsp;

“We’ve continued to see some really great things from individuals the last couple of weeks,” said Coach Richard Clark. “I’ve been very impressed with the way our team has continued to grow and learn from each match this year. It’s a matter of time before we hit our stride and I think this weekend will be a great opportunity for us to do so.”&nbsp;

TCU, which won the NCAA Championship in 2024, comes into the match with a 3-1 record, having posted wins against Navy, VMI, and UTEP. The Horned Frogs took a loss against No. 2 Georgia Southern. The Huskers have faced TCU 35 times since 2000, with a record of 4-29-1. At last year’s NCAA Championships, TCU took first (4,732) while Nebraska finished eighth.

Following Saturday’s match, the Big Red will head home to face off against No. 16 UTEP on Sunday, Nov. 10 at the Big Shots Indoor Range in Lincoln. This is the only home meet of the season for the Husker rifle team.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Huskers set for Top Ten Matchup at TCU

Nebraska swimming and diving hits the road to take on the Kansas Friday, Nov. 1 at 4 p.m. (CT) at Robinson Natatorium in Lawrence.

Nebraska is coming off a 202-94 victory over Iowa State when the Huskers captured 13 individual titles.&nbsp;Gena Jorgenson led the Huskers with individual victories in the 1,650 (16:48.14) and 500 (4:59.39) freestyles, along with a win in the 200 backstroke (2:02.65). The All-American from Aberdeen, S.D., owns is undefeated with nine individual wins this season. Her performance in the victory over Iowa State earned her Big Ten Swimmer-of-the-Week honors (Oct. 30). &nbsp;Maisie Gilford (50 and 100 freestyles) and Beatrix Tanko (200 freestyle and 100 butterfly) each clinched two individual victories against the Cyclones. &nbsp;Senior Maia Hall swept the breaststroke events, winning both the 100 (1:03.68) and 200 (2:18.57) breaststrokes against Iowa State, while freshman Marissa Laurin claimed her first collegiate victory in the 200 individual medley (2:06.17).In the diving well, sophomore Abby Baxter captured victories in both the one-meter and three-meter diving events. Last season, the Huskers powered past the Jayhawks in a 187-113 team victory. The Huskers claimed eight individual titles, with Maia Hall sweeping the breaststroke events and Gena Jorgenson winning the 1,000 freestyle, 500 freestyle and 400 IM. Beatrix Tanko clocked 55.87 to win the 100 butterfly. Antonina Harned scored 331.50 to win the three-meter. SALT LAKE CITY – With three of the four sets as close as can be, Chadron State volleyball came up short in a four-set RMAC match against Westminster Saturday afternoon in Utah, with the host Griffins defeating the Eagles 25-23, 23-25, 25-23, 25-19. 

Alejandra Briseno had 14 kills to lead the Eagles, with Mataya Ward also in double digits with 10. Kendyl Kirkwood had a season-high 40 assists from the setter position.

The loss drops Chadron State to 4-16 on the year. The Eagles are still searching for their first RMAC win, as they are 0-10 in conference play. Westminster improves to 9-10 and 5-6 in the RMAC. 

Chadron State trailed 7-2 early in the first set, but the Eagles used a 4-0 scoring run to pull within a point of the Griffins at 9-8. That would be a theme of the first set, however, as on no less than 11 occasions in set one alone, the Eagles won a point and trailed Westminster by one, yet Chadron State never tied it or took the lead. 

Westminster led 23-20, but Chadron State answered with back-to-back kills from Aiyana Fujiyama and Briseno to make it 23-22. Westminster won the next point to go up by two, but CSC saved the first set point courtesy of a Griffins service error to make it 24-23. Breegan Huntsman answered with a kill for Westminster, however, giving the first set to the hosts. 

With set two tied 6-6, the Eagles put together a 4-0 scoring run with a Griffins service error followed by an Avery Lacy service ace, a Briseno kill and a Fujiyama block to make it 10-6, Chadron State. The Eagles led by two or three points for the majority of the set until the Griffins won three points in a row to tie the set score at 22-22. 

The Eagles held their nerve, with a Bella Adams kill stopping the run to give CSC another lead. An attack error from Westminster put the Eagles up 24-23 before a block from Mataya Ward and Aiyana Fujiyama sealed the set for Chadron State. 

Westminster raced out to a 9-3 lead in the third set, but the Eagles chipped away. Three straight kills, first from Briseno then two straight from Adams, tied the score at 12-12. Westminster wrestled momentum back and took a 23-19 lead, but the Eagles instantly got back in the set with another 3-0 run, taking advantage of two Griffin errors and a bad set. Westminster recovered, however, two kills sandwiched around a service error were enough to win set three for the hosts, once again 25-23. 

Mataya Ward started the fourth set on fire, recording a solo block and a kill on the first two points to put Chadron State up 2-0. The two teams traded scoring runs throughout the set, but Westminster landed the decisive punch with an 8-1 scoring run that turned a 16-15 Eagles lead into a 23-17 advantage for the Griffins. 

Briseno recorded two more kills for CSC's final points, but Westminster went to Claire Cook, who finished with a game-high 16 kills, twice for the final two points needed as Westminster clinched the fourth set 25-19. 

Chadron State takes the court next week for the second of three matchups with South Dakota Mines on Thursday, October 31. Thursday's match, as well as the match against CSU Pueblo the next day, will be nonconference matches as part of the RMAC's "competition pod."

Chadron State drops to 0-10 in RMAC with razor-thin loss in Salt Lake City

SPEARFISH, S.D. – With both teams entering the game with 3-4 overall records and 2-3 marks in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, it was anticipated that the 80th football game between Chadron State and Black Hills State would be dramatic. It proved to be that and more, with Black Hills running back Cam Goods' 45-yard jaunt for a touchdown with 2:46 to play giving the Yellow Jackets a 21-18 victory over the Eagles Saturday evening in Spearfish. 

It was a heart-breaker for the Eagles. Led by quarterback DJ Ralph, who completed 33 of 47 passes for 408 yards, Chadron State had a chance on the game's final play to tie the score and send it into overtime, but their 43-yard field goal attempt missed. The loss was CSC's third loss by three or fewer points this fall.

Ralph's 408 yards were a season-high for the Chadron State quarterback. The Eagles passed the ball 47 times, with Ralph completing 33 of those attempts. Two Chadron State receivers went over 100 yards on the day, with Tommy Thomas catching 11 passes for 146 yards and Grant Swenson catching seven passes for 102. 

Trailing 14-7 at halftime, the Eagles scored 11 unanswered points and went ahead 18-14 after being awarded a safety when Black Hills State was called for intentional grounding on a pass thrown out of the end zone, but Chadron State was unable to hang on to the lead. 

For Black Hills State, Goods also scored the game's first touchdown on a one-yard plunge in the opening period to cap an 11-play, 60-yard drive. It saw Yellow Jackets quarterback Luke Duby complete four of five passes for 48 yards. Ryan Ewing added the extra point.

Chadron State tied the score at 7-7 with just under four minutes left in the second quarter with an eight-play, 88-yard march that was highlighted by Ralph's 50-yard pass to wide receiver Grant Swenson. Two plays later, Ralph hit tight end Peter Krohn with a six-yard toss for the touchdown. Wilson Yee kicked the extra point.

Black Hills regained the lead at 14-7 with 50 seconds left in the first half.  A 33-yard pass from Duby to Damien Boozer was the big gainer, carrying to the 12-yard line. Alternate quarterback Kade Weber then entered the game, ran the ball twice and scored from the five. Ewing again added the PAT.

An interception and 32-yard return by safety Dax Yeradi set up Chadron State's second touchdown with 10:48 left in the third quarter. An 18-yard pass to wide receiver Tommy Thomas was the big play before Ralph carried a keeper the final three yards. It was Yeradi's fourth interception of the season and also Ralph's fourth rushing touchdown of the year.

In a significant play, Jackets' defensive tackle Isaiah Morales blocked the extra point attempt, leaving the score 14-13 in favor of the hosts. That was one of four missed kicks on the day for the Eagles, who failed to convert two other times after lining up for field goals before the game's final play. The first was on the game's opening possession when problems with the snap and hold at the 47-yard line prevented the kick from being attempted. The second was in the second quarter when a 42-yard effort missed the mark.  

Kicker Wilson Yee did make a 35-yarder to give Chadron State its first lead of the game with 5:10 eft in the third period. A 22-yard pass from Ralph to running back Chase Nelson was the key play in the 61-yard drive. There was still 2:40 left to play when the Eagles took possession on their own 23. Ralph hit Thomas for gains of 32 and 17 yards to help move the ball to the Yellow Jackets' 20. The Eagles eventually reached the 13 before defensive end Matt Lofaso sacked the CSC quarterback for a 13-yard loss. 

It was fourth down and the Eagles were forced to try the 43-yard field goal with hopes of playing in overtime, but Yee's kick was slightly wide to the right, ending the game.

The Eagles finished with 410 yards of total offense despite having only two net rushing yards after five sacks for minus 44 yards were deducted. 

For Black Hills State, Damian Boozer had seven catches for 89 yards. Goods, who finished with 98 yards on 19 carries, led all game rushers by a large margin.          

The Eagles will host another long-time rival, South Dakota Mines, this coming Saturday at home at Elliott Field at Don Beebe Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.

It proved to be that and more, with Black Hills running back Cam Goods' 45-yard jaunt for a touchdown with 2:46 to play giving the Yellow Jackets a 21-18 victory over the Eagles Saturday evening in Spearfish. It was a heart-breaker for the Eagles. Led by quarterback DJ Ralph, who completed 33 of 47 passes for 408 yards, Chadron State had a chance on the game's final play to tie the score and send it into overtime, but their 43-yard field goal attempt missed. The loss was CSC's third loss by three or fewer points this fall.Ralph's 408 yards were a season-high for the Chadron State quarterback. The Eagles passed the ball 47 times, with Ralph completing 33 of those attempts. Two Chadron State receivers went over 100 yards on the day, with Tommy Thomas catching 11 passes for 146 yards and Grant Swenson catching seven passes for 102. Trailing 14-7 at halftime, the Eagles scored 11 unanswered points and went ahead 18-14 after being awarded a safety when Black Hills State was called for intentional grounding on a pass thrown out of the end zone, but Chadron State was unable to hang on to the lead. For Black Hills State, Goods also scored the game's first touchdown on a one-yard plunge in the opening period to cap an 11-play, 60-yard drive. It saw Yellow Jackets quarterback Luke Duby complete four of five passes for 48 yards. Ryan Ewing added the extra point.Chadron State tied the score at 7-7 with just under four minutes left in the second quarter with an eight-play, 88-yard march that was highlighted by Ralph's 50-yard pass to wide receiver Grant Swenson. Two plays later, Ralph hit tight end Peter Krohn with a six-yard toss for the touchdown. Wilson Yee kicked the extra point.Black Hills regained the lead at 14-7 with 50 seconds left in the first half. Black Hills State holds off CSC comeback in final seconds

VICTORIA – The Victoria volleyball is headed to the 1A
Division II State Tournament after winning their own Sub-State Saturday.

The top-seeded Knights defeated Minneola 25-16, 25-11 in the
semifinals then defeated Western Plains 25-15, 25-11 in the finals.

Victoria improves to 26-14 on the season.

Wheatland-Grinnell also advances to the state tournament after
sweeping Golden Plains and Wallace County in the Sharon Springs Sub-State.
Wheatland-Grinnell is now 31-9.

Otis-Bison also punched their ticket to the state tournament
after sweeping Hodgeman County and Bucklin at their own Sub-State. The Cougars

The Nebraska women's basketball team opens the 2024-25 season at No. 23 in the USA Today/WBCA Top 25 released on Thursday, Oct. 24. The Huskers were also ranked No. 23 in the preseason AP Poll (Oct. 15).

Nebraska is coming off a trip to the second round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament and an appearance in the Big Ten Tournament Championship Game. Huskers Ranked No. 23 in WBCA Preseason Top 25

The Nebraska swim and dive team will take on Iowa State in the Big Red's annual Pink Out dual meet at the Devaney Natatorium on Friday, Oct. 25 at 3 p.m. (CT).&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Huskers plan to get back on the winning track against the Cyclones after dropping a 170-130 decision at Iowa (Oct. 18).

Against the Hawkeyes, Husker All-American Gena Jorgensen captured three individual titles, while Abby Baxter captured the victory on the one-meter board.&nbsp;

Jorgenson, a junior from Aberdeen, S.D., swam her way to wins in both the 1,000 freestyle (10:06.98) and 500 free (4:55.64). She added another victory in the 200 backstroke (4:55.64).&nbsp;

Newcomer Maisie Gilford stood out for the Huskers, contributing a pair of individual runner-up finishes in the 50 freestyle (23.98) and 100 free (52.16). The junior from England also was a part of two second-place relays.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Maia Hall, a senior from Whitby, England, contributed second-place finishes in the 100 (1:03.62) and 200 (2:17.57) breaststrokes. Hall also added a third-place performance in the 200 IM (2:07.39). &nbsp;

In the diving well the Huskers had a strong all-around showing. Baxter scored 305.10 to take the title on the one-meter board. Kelsey Clairmont finished fifth. On the three-meter, sophomore&nbsp;Antonina Harned&nbsp;earned a runner-up finish (315.53), while Baxter took third and&nbsp;Nettie Knapton&nbsp;finished fifth. &nbsp;

Last Meeting with Iowa StateLast season, the Huskers powered past the Cyclones, 167-132 victory. Jorgenson led the Huskers by capturing two titles in the 1,000 (10:15.79) and 500 (4:59.84) freestyles. Nebraska native JoJo Randby contributed an individual title in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.65). Abby Baxter and Antonina Harned took first and second place in both the one-meter and three-meter dives, respectively.&nbsp;&nbsp;

NSAA Volleyball District and Sub-District Assignments

OMAHA, Neb.&nbsp;–&nbsp;Omaha Supernovas&nbsp;setter&nbsp;Natalia Valentín-Anderson&nbsp;extended her string of standout performances into Week Three of the Athletes Unlimited Pro Volleyball League in Arizona.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Valentín-Anderson, who helped lead Omaha to the inaugural Pro Volleyball Federation Championship in May, teamed up with former Supernova and 2024 PVF Server of the Year&nbsp;Bethania De La Cruz-Mejía&nbsp;for the second-straight week. Team De La Cruz-Meíja were fearsome once again, recording a 2-1 record losing only to Team (Brittany) Abercrombie, who has yet to lose a match in AU this season.&nbsp;

The Olympian put up 655 points across three matches by posting109 assists (12.1 A/S), 37 digs (4.1 D/S), three kills, two blocks and one ace while being a part of two team wins. Heading into Week Four, Valentín-Anderson ranks sixth with 1,898 points being the only setter inside the top ten.&nbsp;&nbsp;

There’s no debate that Valentín-Anderson is the best performing setter in AU this season, leading the league in assists (322) by 68 over former Supernova and teammate&nbsp;Sydney Hilley&nbsp;(254). She’s also the AU leader in assists per set with 11.5 with Hilley coming closest at 9.77. Among setters, Valentín-Anderson is first in digs (114) and digs per set (4.07) while being tied for first in kills (12) and second in both aces (4) and blocks (7).&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kelsie Payne&nbsp;starred at opposite for Team (Dani) Drews and racked up 285 points with 21 kills, 17 digs and four blocks. 2024 Supernovas team captain&nbsp;Brooke Nuneviller&nbsp;was balanced on the stat sheet once again with 29 kills and 28 digs across three matches. That also includes three assists, one block and one ace. Nuneviller ranks fourth overall in kills per set (3.79) and leads every attacker with 3.61 digs per set.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Supernovas middle blocker and former Nebraska Volleyball player&nbsp;Kayla Caffey&nbsp;played in only seven sets limiting her numbers to 10 kills, three blocks, two aces and one dig. She’s third in AU with 22 blocks while being extremely effective from the service line with six aces, which is third overall and first among middle blockers.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Supernovas assistant coach&nbsp;Thomas Robson&nbsp;was the facilitator for Team Drews during Week Three and will shift to Team (Morgan) Hentz for Week Four.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The competing Supernovas are once again spread across two teams with Nuneviller joining undefeated Team Abercrombie after being selected with her first pick. Caffey will join her future Omaha teammate while Robson will work with Valentín-Anderson and Payne on Team Hentz. For Valentín-Anderson, this is the first time in the AU season that she will be on the same team as one of her fellow Supernovas.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Supernovas’ Valentín-Anderson stays dominant in Week Three of Athletes Unlimited, Ranks Sixth heading into Week Four

Beginning a four-match homestand,&nbsp;the Lopers (21-1) face travel partner Fort Hays State (10-8) Friday night and then get the weekend off.

This was a countable match for the Warriors (12-11) who hail from Sterling, Kan. They used 16 different players with seven having a kill. Sterling returns to NAIA action Saturday at Evangel (Mo.).There were just five ties and three lead changes as UNK out hit SC by a .290-.000 margin. The Warriors had 21 kills and 21 errors, 17 of the unforced kind, but also dug up 45 balls.

“They played really good defense. We took some great swings…they block touched a lot of balls, they slowed balls down, we got blocked a little, they dug some hard-hit balls,” said UNK head coach&nbsp;Rick Squiers. “They came to play and had the right mentality. I’m sure they took some things away from this match and we appreciate them coming up here. It’s hard to find home matches.”
