City of North Platte
The City of North Platte & Municipal Light and Water have recently been made aware of an individual or individuals impersonating City employees or City Departments by calling or texting residents and demanding payment to avoid disconnection of utilities.
THESE CALLS OR TEXTS ARE NOT FROM THE CITY OF NORTH PLATTE! Residents should be on the lookout for threatening calls about their utility accounts and hang up on anyone who demands immediate payment to prevent disconnection or threatening bodily harm.
Follow these guidelines to avoid being a victim of this scam:
- Municipal Light & Water will contact you by mail if your account is delinquent. They may call you, but they will never demand immediate payment over the phone or threaten bodily harm.
- If a caller demands a utility payment by prepaid debit card, gift card or wire transfer it is a scam.
- Scammers can manipulate your caller ID display to show the number for Municipal Light & Water when they call.
- If you receive a threatening call about your home or business account, hang up, and do not engage the caller.
- Contact Municipal Light & Water directly by using information from your billing statement to inquire about the status of your account or to report a possible scam call.
