Fire activity on the Cottonwood Fire increased slightly over the weekend, but containment lines remain secure, according to fire officials.

Rob Powell, Operations Section Chief for Rocky Mountain Complex Incident Management Team 1, said the fire grew by about 100 acres in one section due to weather-driven activity.

“We gained about 100 acres or so on the Cottonwood Fire… in the uncontained portion of it,” Powell said.

Despite that growth, Powell emphasized that containment lines held and no fire spread beyond control lines.

“We didn’t lose anything… outside our containment lines last night,” he said.

Most of the fire activity remains within the interior of the fire perimeter, where pockets of heat continue to burn.

Powell said those interior flare-ups are expected to fluctuate with weather conditions.

“I would say like today fire conditions have moderated… probably won’t see as much,” he said.

However, he warned that more active fire behavior could return later in the week.

“Later in the week we’re back more to that hot, dry, and windy,” Powell said.

Fire crews remain in place and prepared to respond to any changes in conditions as the region continues to face elevated wildfire risk.
