BREAKING: Pillen Rescinds Statewide Burn Ban as Fire Risk Eases

Posted Apr 02, 2026 6:09 PM

Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen has rescinded the state’s most recent burn ban, allowing burn permits to once again be issued through local fire chiefs or other designated fire department officials.

In a release issued Wednesday, the governor’s office said the change comes after a reduction in the potential for drought-related emergencies across Nebraska. The new executive order, identified as 2610, states that conditions that had contributed to an elevated wildfire threat have now diminished to an acceptable level.

Pillen had extended the original burn ban last week because of continued wildfire risk. That order had been scheduled to remain in effect through April 10.

With the statewide ban now lifted, authority over burn permits returns to local fire officials.
