Ogallala & Perkins County playoff football on radio this afternoon

Mid-Plains Community College will host a Getting Retirement Right class at five of its campuses in November.

The class is designed for those who are serious about having a more secure retirement. It will be taught by Marc Werkmeister, certified financial planner.

Whether thinking about retirement, nearing retirement or already retired, it is important to know the major threats to retirement and strategies to help minimize those threats, according Werkmeister.

He believes preparing for retirement is the single most important financial challenge people currently face. During his class, Werkmeister will explain new truths and techniques to help individuals prepare for what’s ahead.

The class will be offered at the following times and locations:

MPCC to offer retirement planning class in five communities

NORTH PLATTE - The Lincoln County Board of REALTORS would like to congratulate Nelson Jett of Great Plains Reality in North Platte, who was recently elected as the Nebraska REALTORS Association's Central Region Director for the term 1/1/2024-12/31/2025. The Central Region Directorship covers the area of North Platte, Kearney, and Grand Island and everything in between.

Jett is excited to assume the role starting in January of 2024. He looks forward to helping to ensuring that the voices of Central Nebraska are heard at the State level during his term.

Jett is currently the President of the Lincoln County Board of REALTORS. Other state roles currently include service as a State RPAC Trustee, and currently Vice Chair of the Government Affairs Committee. He has previously served as the Convention Committee Chair and the Young Professionals Network Committee Chair.

Jett is also Nationally involved and serves as a Region 8 Representative on the National Association of REALTORS Young Professionals Advisory Board, and on the National RPAC Participation Council as well.

Jett Elected As New State Realtor Central Region Director

&nbsp;(SCOTTSBLUFF, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol, with assistance from the WING Task Force, Bureau of Indian Affairs – Division of Drug Enforcement, and the FBI Badlands Safe Trails Task Force, arrested three people after locating 1.6 pounds of methamphetamine during a traffic stop Tuesday.

Early Tuesday, NSP received information of a vehicle suspected to be trafficking a controlled substance through western Nebraska. The vehicle was believed to be traveling to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

At approximately 3:15 a.m. Tuesday, a trooper located the vehicle, a Nissan Rogue, traveling northbound on Highway 385 near Gurley. During the traffic stop, the trooper discovered that the driver, Breohnna Big Crow, had an outstanding warrant and was in possession of a controlled substance. A search of the vehicle revealed approximately 1.6 pounds of methamphetamine and a smaller amount of psilocybin mushrooms.

The driver, Breohnna Big Crow, 25, and passengers Monique Merrival, 37, and Dawn Dowty, 33, all of Rapid City, South Dakota, were arrested for possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver. All three were lodged in Cheyenne County Jail.

The Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office K9 unit also assisted in this incident.

Cell Phones in the Workplace will be the subject of a new class at the Mid-Plains Community College Imperial Campus. The roundtable session is scheduled for noon to 1 p.m. (MST) Nov. 8.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb - Michael Ray will headline the concert at the Lincoln County Fair in North Platte on July 26, 2024. The announcement came Thursday morning. Drew Phillips Band will open for Ray. Tickets go on sale Friday, October 27 at www.lincofair.com for only $30/ticket.

Michael Ray was born in Eustis, Florida. He was inspired by his grandfather Amos "Wilson" Roach, who played music for him and taught him how to play guitar, in addition to having him perform at assisted living centers. Ray chose to form a band in southern Florida after graduating high school, and a disc jockey at WPCV began playing his music. He independently released an album in 2010, which was discovered by manager Tony Conway.

Ray was mentored by John Rich of Big &amp; Rich on the singing competition The Next: Fame Is at Your Doorstep, which he won. He and Rich co-wrote Big &amp; Rich's 2015 single, "Run Away with You".[2] After winning the competition, Ray was signed to Warner Bros. Records Nashville. His first EP, Tour Bootleg, was released in 2014. Two of the EP's tracks, "Kiss You in the Morning" (which went to number one on the Country Airplay charts in 2015) and "Think a Little Less," would later appear on his self-titled second album, released in 2015, becoming Ray's first and third singles, respectively. The track "Real Men Love Jesus" was named as Ray's second single. Ray supported the album with a tour.

On June 16, 2017, Ray released the single "Get to You" ahead of his third studio album, Amos.[3] Upon the album's release in 2018, it would produce two more singles: "One That Got Away" and "Her World or Mine." Both of his albums were produced by Scott Hendricks.

In September 2020, Ray released the single "Whiskey and Rain" ahead of his fourth studio album, originally set to be released in 2021.

LINCOLN, NEB. – Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation awarded six agricultural professionals scholarships to participate in the Nebraska LEAD program, keeping with the mission of cultivating the future of agriculture.

“These individuals continue to push to make agriculture better across The Good Life,” said Megahn Schafer, executive director of the Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation. “We are proud to support these individuals as they make an investment in their future, becoming equipped to better serve their communities and agriculture through the Nebraska LEAD program.”

The LEAD Scholarship awards agricultural stakeholders that participate in the Nebraska LEAD program. The LEAD program improves leadership skills and abilities of Nebraska’s future agricultural leaders through exposure to diverse topics, issues, concerns, points of view, and innovative ideas. The winners of the LEAD Scholarship are current Farm Bureau members that commit to serving in a leadership role with Farm Bureau upon completion of the program.

The six winners are Adam Oldemeyer (Ayr); April Delsing (Hemingford); Dalton Kenning (Wood River); Jake Werner (Lincoln); Jonathan Lechtenberg (Imperial); and Michelle Bose (Arcadia).

The Sheldon Exhibit, which is a traveling exhibit will be at the PAC tell the end of the month, also a Halloween exhibit, a special gallery will be set up for North Platte native Eric Sterns that will be open in early November and concerts.&nbsp;

All are key aspects of childhood all Nebraska youth deserve.

And every day, in both urban and rural communities across our state, after-school programs provide thousands of Nebraska youths just such opportunities for learning and growth.&nbsp; School-based and community-powered, after-school (and summer) programs provide hands-on learning opportunities complementing school day instruction in ways that excite, engage and inspire the next generation.

These experiences provide critical support to working parents, who need to know that their children are safe and engaged as they close out their workdays.&nbsp; After-school programs also create the nurturing places all Nebraska communities require to remain welcoming places for the families and businesses we need to attract and retain so we can continue to grow our economy and quality of life for all Nebraskans.

&nbsp; Thursday Oct. 26 is Lights on Afterschool Day, a national celebration of the important role after-school programs play in communities across our nation.&nbsp; On Oct. 6 Gov. Jim Pillen recognized Lights On Afterschool with a&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://beyondschoolbells.org/resources/loa.html">proclamation</a>&nbsp;highlighting the benefits Nebraska receives via these programs.&nbsp;&nbsp;

True to form, Nebraskans didn’t wait for the national start to kick off our Lights on Afterschool events.&nbsp; Celebrations started last week with a combination early Lights On/Halloween celebration at Jefferson Elementary in North Platte on Oct. 13 before moving east to Omaha on Oct. 14 with a citywide celebration at the brand-new Luminarium in RiverFront Park.&nbsp; Many more celebrations are planned statewide over the next two weeks.

Importantly, this year’s celebration marks the 20th&nbsp;anniversary of the Nebraska Department of Education’s administration of the 21st&nbsp;Century Community Learning Centers, a federal grant program supporting high quality after-school (and summer) programs that has grown to serve 143 Nebraska sites.&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.education.ne.gov/21stcclc/">NDE 21st CCLC</a>&nbsp;programs have provided tens of thousands of hours of engaging, enriching programming to tens of thousands of youths in underserved communities across our state, through safe, structured opportunities for hands-on STEM learning, field trips, cooking classes and many, many more activities, facilitated by professional staff and community volunteers.

We know through our professional work that high-quality after-school and summer programs play a crucial role in helping provide youths with additional opportunities for learning and the healthy growth and development all Nebraska students need. These programs complement but don’t duplicate the school day learning and provide youth with hands-on, small group, experiential-rich learning opportunities that are too often not available during the school day. To see what these programs look like in one community, Grand Island, we encourage you to watch the following video,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://iloveps.org/films/mobile-makerspace-learning">STEM Learning on Wheels</a>, capturing an example of youth imagination and creativity unleashed by a dynamic after-school program.

Dr. Brain Maher, Nebraska’s current commissioner of education, noted the value of after-school programs when welcoming attendees to September’s GetConnected 2023, stating that the learning taking place in after-school and summer programs is just as important as the learning that takes place during the school day. For children’s growing brains and bodies, where and when learning takes place is irrelevant. What’s important is that youths are supported by caring adults and provided with experiences that support their healthy growth.&nbsp;After-school and summer programs can be the hands-on, experiential learning that excites, engages and inspires Nebraska youths to try new things, make friends and engage in new activities that may help chart a life course.

<a target="_blank" href="http://www.beyondschoolbells.org/">Beyond School Bells</a>, a program of the Nebraska Children and Families Foundation, works to build public-private partnerships to support the development of high quality, cost-effective and locally sustainable after-school and summer programs in communities across our state. While informal education programs have long been a crucial part of every community’s youth development system, we believe that the disrupted learning of the COVID pandemic will make the role of after-school and summer programs even more important both now and in the future.

Jim Pillen recognized Lights On Afterschool with a&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://beyondschoolbells.org/resources/loa.html">proclamation</a>&nbsp;highlighting the benefits Nebraska receives via these programs.&nbsp;&nbsp;True to form, Nebraskans didn’t wait for the national start to kick off our Lights on Afterschool events.&nbsp; Celebrations started last week with a combination early Lights On/Halloween celebration at Jefferson Elementary in North Platte on Oct. 13 before moving east to Omaha on Oct. 14 with a citywide celebration at the brand-new Luminarium in RiverFront Park.&nbsp; Many more celebrations are planned statewide over the next two weeks.Importantly, this year’s celebration marks the 20th&nbsp;anniversary of the Nebraska Department of Education’s administration of the 21st&nbsp;Century Community Learning Centers, a federal grant program supporting high quality after-school (and summer) programs that has grown to serve 143 Nebraska sites.&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.education.ne.gov/21stcclc/">NDE 21st CCLC</a>&nbsp;programs have provided tens of thousands of hours of engaging, enriching programming to tens of thousands of youths in underserved communities across our state, through safe, structured opportunities for hands-on STEM learning, field trips, cooking classes and many, many more activities, facilitated by professional staff and community volunteers.We know through our professional work that high-quality after-school and summer programs play a crucial role in helping provide youths with additional opportunities for learning and the healthy growth and development all Nebraska students need. These programs complement but don’t duplicate the school day learning and provide youth with hands-on, small group, experiential-rich learning opportunities that are too often not available during the school day. Area high school students auditioned for the opportunity to perform at the concert. This year, 31 musicians from nine schools were selected.

High school students shine in Best of the West Music Festival

Snyder is the subject of the Netflix movie, “Walk. Ride. Rodeo,” released in 2019. The biopic focuses on her journey leading up to and following a vehicle accident that left her paralyzed from the waist down.

Since then, Snyder has become one of the most sought-after social influencers and motivational speakers in western sports.

Approximately 275 attended her presentation at NPCC where she shared her story of triumph over tragedy.

“Don’t ever compare your challenge to somebody else,” Snyder told the audience. “Each one of us is going to have our own challenges and our own way of handling them. There is always someone praying for what you have.”

Street work going on in Hershey today

The Lincoln County Board of Commissioners has determined the need to close the N. Sutherland River Bridge on North Prairie Trace Road over the North Platte River for a scheduled bridge replacement project.  We are currently planning to close the bridge as soon as Wednesday, October 25th, 2023 as construction will start immediately after.  The closure is expected to last until Summer 2025. 

 Please use West Suburban Road, North Hershey Road, and North River Road to detour the closure.  The detour route can also be completed using State Highway 30, North Hershey Road, and North River Road.  Exhaustive efforts to keep the existing bridge open during the construction of the new structure, or a temporary bridge structure being put in place, have been pursued and, unfortunately, are not possible due to several factors.

 They include environmental concerns and regulations, hydrological flows of the North Platte River, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' lengthy review process, and the risk of losing state funding that is vital to building the new structure.  Conversations and planning have been done with area first responder organizations to ensure that a seamless and thorough plan for responding to emergencies north of the river is in place.  Road crews have prioritized the detour routes for maintenance and snow removal, including adding aggregate materials to the road in order to mitigate wear and tear due to increased traffic. 

Conversations have also been had with the selected contractor, who has been a good partner in this process, and who is committed to working on the new structure year-round and completing the bridge on time.  Their construction workers are part of our local community.  We extend our gratitude to them and look forward to working with them throughout this construction process.&nbsp;&nbsp;

10/24 Ogallala City Council Meeting Agenda

Mid-Plains Community College adjunct instructor Aida Ullrich, of North Platte, has been honored with a Cultivating Education Award from the nonprofit organization, Las Mañanitas Community Advocates.

Ullrich has served as an ESL instructor for Mid-Plains for since 2015. Las Mañanitas Community Advocates, selected her for the award based on her efforts to teach English as a Second Language to the community’s growing non-English speaking population.

Ullrich was presented with a certificate during the Hispanic Heritage Gala Oct. 13 at La Quinta Inn and Suites by Wyndham in North Platte.

“It took me by surprise,” Ullrich said of receiving the award. “It felt very nice. I was told my name was mentioned more than 19 times when they were looking for nominations.”

Although humbled by the recognition, the true award for Ullrich comes from the changes and growth she sees in her students.

“I enjoy getting the knowledge to the people who need it so they can perform better here and understand,” Ullrich said. “Most of them are family of people working here. When they tell me that they can now understand in the store when they are talked to - that really makes me feel good because they are learning.”

OGALLALA - The Ogallala Regional Arts Council announced they will be hosting piano entertainer Jason Lyle Black on November 9th at the Ogallala High School Performing Arts Center. The show is set to begin at 7:00pm mountain time.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Black has the remarkable ability to play as easily sitting backwards as he does sitting forwards, while performing music from Disney to Broadway classics, to songs from the Beatles, AC/DC, and movie theme songs.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - The Village of Sutherland is hosting an Economic Development Open House &amp; Town Hall Meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 24th from 7:00pm-8:00pm at the Village of Sutherland Office. The event is open to the public and is a great time to learn about the economic program but also voice their concerns and ideas for growth for the community. It's also an opportunity to learn about the 3 Sutherland Economic Development Programs: Business Development Loan and Grant, Property Improvement Program Loan and Grant (Commercial and Residential) and Digital Marketing Grant.&nbsp;

The residents of Sutherland voted for LB840 in May of 2022 which is a collection of 1.5% sales tax. "It's an opportunity for businesses and citizens of Sutherland to learn about our economic development program and its brand new," said Muriel Clark. "We began collecting those funds in January of 2023, so we got about 6, 7 months of those collections coming into our coffers, and we are just wanting to let people know the funds we have and what is available to do with those funds."&nbsp;

The event is open to the public and is a great time to learn about the economic program but also voice their concerns and ideas for growth for the community. It's also an opportunity to learn about the 3 Sutherland Economic Development Programs: Business Development Loan and Grant, Property Improvement Program Loan and Grant (Commercial and Residential) and Digital Marketing Grant.&nbsp;The residents of Sutherland voted for LB840 in May of 2022 which is a collection of 1.5% sales tax. "It's an opportunity for businesses and citizens of Sutherland to learn about our economic development program and its brand new," said Muriel Clark. "We began collecting those funds in January of 2023, so we got about 6, 7 months of those collections coming into our coffers, and we are just wanting to let people know the funds we have and what is available to do with those funds."&nbsp;The event is taking place Oct. 24th from 7:00pm-8:00pm at the Village of Sutherland Office. 8-man Playoffs were re-seeded Friday morning after the East/West first round matchups, and all 8-man and 6-man brackets were released Saturday morning. The Post and our radio stations Flatrock 100.7 &amp; Z 93.5 Country will provide play-by-play coverage this Friday of Perkins County at Cross County at 5pm Mountain Time on Z93.5 Country, while we'll also air Ogallala at Auburn on Flatrock 100.7 on Friday. (no time has been announced yet for this game)

Other highlights with teams from the POST area include North Platte St. Pat's in Class D1, the Irish are the 2 seed and will host Clarkson/Leigh. In Class D2, #4 South Loop hosts Lawrence-Nelson while Mullen is at Wynot and Dundy County-Stratton will host Twin Loup.
