(North Platte, Nebraska, 10/09/2025) On October 13th and 14th, the best of Nebraska High School Class C girls’ golfers will unite in North Platte for the state championship golf tournament. The two-day event will draw 95 golfers from across the state to the Lake Maloney Golf Course. Along with the participants, we are expecting many friends and family to travel alongside their girls to support them. Tee times will begin from holes one and ten at 9:00am on Monday, October 13th, weather permitting.

Visit North Platte, in partnership with Lake Maloney Golf Course, was awarded a four-year commitment with NSAA to host Class C Girls State Golf. The 2025 tournament will be the third year of that agreement. This event is predicted to generate approximately $41,250 in visitor spending in the North Platte area.

Each year there is a need for numerous volunteers to help make the event run smoothly alongside the NSAA officials, Visit North Platte, and Lake Maloney Golf Course. Volunteer recruitment has a significant impact on the day-to-day operations of the tournament.

OGALLALA, Neb. — The Ogallala Livestock Auction shattered records Thursday during its Special Stocker &amp; Feeder Sale, setting 37 new barn records — including two national all-time highs.

The Oct. 9 sale featured standout performances across multiple weight divisions, highlighted by 3-, 4-, 6-, and 7-weight steers reaching unprecedented prices.

In the 4-weight division, 17 head averaging 406 pounds sold for $595 per hundredweight, and 144 head at 430 pounds brought $587. Both sales now rank among the top 10 all-time nationally, while accounting for nine of the 10 highest 4-weight sales in Ogallala barn history.

The market remained strong across middle-weight classes, with new records set for every 5- and 6-weight sale. A new barn record was also established in the 7-weight category, where 60 head averaging 778 pounds sold for $412.50.

The 8-weight division followed suit, as 58 head at 864 pounds brought $382, marking the second-highest price for that class in barn history.

In lighter weights, the barn surpassed the $600 mark for the first time, with 47 head at 368 pounds selling for $615 and 22 head at 397 pounds for $605 — the two highest 3-weight prices ever recorded at Ogallala.

It was a record-setting day from start to finish, reinforcing Ogallala Livestock Auction’s position among the top-performing sale barns in the nation.

A fifth positive case of rabies in an animal has been reported to Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD). This positive rabies test was from a bat in Frontier County. This is the second positive bat in southwest Nebraska for 2025, and the highest number of rabies cases in a year since 2015.

Rabies is a deadly virus that affects the brain and is found in bats and other warm-blooded animals. Rabies is spread through the saliva or blood of an infected animal, which can include a bite or contact with an infected bat.

“Bats migrate in late summer and early fall, so increased activity is normal this time of year,” explains Melissa Propp RN, Clinic Manager at SWNPHD. “A bat with rabies may have unusual behavior such as being active during the day, inability to fly, or seeking contact with humans.”

Always avoid touching bats with your bare hands. Bat bites can be very small and difficult to see, making it hard to know if you had contact. If you think you have been bitten or scratched by a bat, wash the area with soap and water right away and seek medical attention.

Pets are also at risk of rabies exposure from bats or stray animals near your home. Rabies is fatal to pets and once an animal shows signs of the disease it is too late for treatment. The most important way to help your pet is to make sure they are up to date on vaccinations, which will protect them if they are ever exposed to a rabid animal.

When possible, limit your pet from situations where they may encounter bats, skunks or stray animals to reduce their risk of getting rabies. If your pet has had contact or been bitten by a wild or stray animal, attempt to bring the wild animal to a vet for testing if you can do so safely. Always use extreme caution when handling wild animals and avoid touching them with your bare hands.

If you suspect your pet has been exposed to rabies, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Two University of Nebraska–Lincoln students have been honored through the 2025 Certified Angus Beef® Colvin Scholarship Fund, joining 27 recipients nationwide who received a total of $100,000 to support their academic and professional journeys in agriculture.

“Seeing these students pursue their passions in agriculture is truly inspiring,” said Danielle Matter, CAB director of content strategy. “Each scholarship recipient is not only talented and driven but also represents the innovation, leadership and dedication that will shape the future of the beef industry.”

Both Jones and Curry are students in UNL’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR), part of the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) is encouraging all residents to prioritize their health by getting active. Just 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week—that’s a little over 20 minutes a day—can make a big difference in your overall well-being.

On average, the number of residents in SWNPHD reporting no leisure-time physical activity in the past 30 days has been 4% higher when compared to the Nebraska state average between 2011 and 2020.

In addition to aerobic activity, SWNPHD recommends including moderate- to high-intensity muscle-strengthening activities—like lifting weights or using resistance bands—at least two days per week.

"Physical activity is one of the most powerful tools we have to support both physical and mental health," said Sarah Minnick, Program Manager at SWNPHD. “It helps manage stress, improves mood, boosts energy, supports better sleep, and significantly reduces the risk of chronic diseases.”

Even small changes can add up. Whether you're walking your dog, dancing in your kitchen, biking with your kids, or working in your yard—move more and sit less throughout the day. The key is to start where you are and build up gradually.

Mandan, N.D. – The Mid-Plains Community College rodeo teams headed north last weekend to compete in the Mystic Stampede, hosted by Bismarck State College.

The MPCC men’s team entered the event ranked second in the nation and secured a strong finish, earning 675 points to place second behind Bismarck State. The women’s team scored 70 points over the two-day event, placing seventh overall in the team standings.

Kahiwa Augustiro stepped into the chute and would leave the arena as the top bareback rider. His teammate Jackson Lunn wasn’t far behind, finishing second and giving MPCC a one-two punch in the event.

Koy McAllister entered the weekend ranked second in the Great Plains Region in the saddle bronc event. The sophomore earned 90 points to finish third behind Tayson Jones (Dickinson State) and Jadon Skavdahl (University of Nebraska).

Matt Miller continued his climb up the regional leaderboard with a second-place finish in tie-down roping. On the women’s side, Laynee Ohm added a fourth-place finish in goat tying.

The MPCC rodeo teams will wrap up the fall season Oct. 10-11 at the Iowa Central Community College rodeo in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

The Hot Sheets: October 4, 2025

October 3, 2025 (North Platte, Neb.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested one person after finding nearly 100 pounds of Ketamine during a traffic stop on Interstate 80.

At approximately 11:25 a.m. Thursday, a trooper saw a westbound Hyundai Tucson speeding on I-80 near North Platte, at mile marker 179. During the traffic stop, the trooper observed THC vape cartridges inside the vehicle.

A search of the vehicle revealed numerous vacuum sealed bags of suspected Ketamine. The bags were contained inside suitcases in the trunk of the vehicle. The weight of the Ketamine was 98 pounds. Troopers also found over $4,600 in cash in the vehicle.

The driver, Trevor Frisby, 28, of Wilmington, North Carolina, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, possession with intent to deliver, and possession of money during a drug violation. He was lodged in Lincoln County Jail.

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has confirmed that WIC clinics across the state are open, and participants can continue to use their e-WIC cards at authorized grocery stores and pharmacies without disruption.

HERSHEY, Neb. — The Hershey Public Schools Board of Education has once again been recognized among the top governing bodies in Nebraska. At the Nebraska Association of School Boards (NASB) Area Membership Meeting in North Platte on Sept. 3, the Board received the NASB Board of Excellence Award for the 2024–2025 school year.

Hershey was one of only 14 boards statewide to earn the award this year. Even more impressive, the district has now received the honor seven consecutive years, every year since 2018–2019 — a distinction achieved by only a handful of school boards across the state.

The NASB Board of Excellence Award is designed to highlight boards that go above and beyond in leadership, learning, and advocacy. To qualify, members must complete professional development, hold a goal-planning retreat to strengthen governance, and participate in the NASB Delegate Assembly, which shapes statewide education policy.

“Earning this award once is a significant accomplishment — earning it seven years in a row demonstrates a remarkable commitment to strong governance and student success,” NASB officials noted.

In addition to the group recognition, several board members were honored through NASB’s Award of Achievement Program:

Dickinson, N.D. – The Mid-Plains Community College men’s and women’s rodeo teams dominated the competition this past weekend at the Blue Hawk Stampede Rodeo, hosted by Dickinson State University. Both teams brought home team titles, with the men earning 1,245 points and the women securing the crown with 300 points.

On the men’s side, Kahiwa Augustiro stole the spotlight as the all-around champion, capturing first place in team roping with teammate Jace Richter and adding third-place finishes in bareback and bull riding. Richter also claimed second in tie-down roping, while Jackson Lunn took the gold buckle in bareback riding with a total of 150 points.

Other standout performances included Koy McAllister, who finished second in saddle bronc and eighth in steer wrestling, and Matt Miller, who earned the gold buckle in tie-down roping, rounding out a strong showing for the men’s team.

The women’s team also shined, with Laynee Ohm earning the reserve all-around title thanks to third-place finishes in goat tying and breakaway roping. Teammates Bailey Barker and Samantha Gerlach contributed important points with sixth-place finishes in breakaway roping and barrel racing, respectively.

The MPCC Rodeo Teams will return to the arena for the Mystic Stampede at the Dale Pahlke Arena in Mandan, N.D., Oct. 3-4, aiming to continue their winning streak.

MPCC Rodeo Teams Sweep Blue Hawk Stampede Titles

Ogallala, NE&nbsp;– Western Resources Group (WRG) is excited to announce the implementation of&nbsp;Recycle Across America® standardized labels&nbsp;on all recycling bins owned by WRG throughout its facility and community collection points. The process will begin in&nbsp;October&nbsp;and is expected to take a couple of months to be fully completed.

The updated labels are designed to&nbsp;reduce contamination in recycling bins&nbsp;by clearly showing what materials are accepted in each bin. Each label includes images of accepted materials and features&nbsp;both English and Spanish translations&nbsp;to ensure accessibility for a diverse range of users.

“These standardized labels are recognized nationwide,” said Jenn Kugler, WRG Public Education Director. “As a tourist community, we often have visitors from out of town. The consistency of these labels will make it easier for everyone—locals and visitors alike—to understand what goes where.”

The purchase of the labels was made possible through&nbsp;grant funding provided by the Nebraska Recycling Council in partnership with the Nebraska Environmental Trust, and community giving from the Keith County Big Give in June.

WRG encourages all community members to pay close attention to the new labels as they appear over the coming weeks. By following the updated guidance, residents can help reduce contamination, increase recycling efficiency, and support a cleaner environment for the region.
