Ogallala City Council Approves Board Appointments, Infrastructure Plans, and Airport Updates

OGALLALA — The Ogallala City Council kicked off 2026 by approving appointments to multiple city boards, discussing ongoing infrastructure projects, and reviewing plans for airport improvements at Monday night’s meeting.

City Manager Kevin Wilkins highlighted several new board appointments, including the city’s newly formed Historic Preservation Commission. 

“Ogallala is now one of 12 certified local governments with the Nebraska Historic Preservation Commission,” Wilkins said. Barb Jeffries was appointed to a two-year term, and Cody Quinn will serve three years.

 The commission plans to meet January 27, with Nebraska State Historical Preservation Director Kelly Bacon attending to discuss potential updates to the Historic Overlay at Ogallala Middle School.

Additional appointments included Ray Diaz and Jordan Namath to three-year terms on the Planning and Zoning Commission and Richard Kester to the Tree Board. Wilkins encouraged residents interested in trees to apply for the remaining openings.

The council also reviewed updates from the Ogallala YMCA, which has seen growing participation in programs and the city’s pool. Wilkins said the pool’s attendance has “probably tripled” under new management.

 “If you’re going to spend the money, you want to see people using it,” he said. Officials are exploring the possibility of forming a local swim team and expanding youth programming.

Infrastructure needs were also a major topic, including the cost of repairs following a lift station failure on the south side of town. Wilkins explained that the pumps were “probably undersized for the job” and that both failed simultaneously, leading to an emergency discharge of wastewater into a contained area of the river. 

He added, “Fortunately, there was a valve on it, so we got that fixed,” and the city expects the repairs to cost about $200,000.

At the airport, council members approved issuing a request for proposals for a fixed-base operator at Serial Field. Wilkins said the goal is to increase aviation-related business and streamline fuel sales. 

“We would really just like to have more activity at that airport,” he said. Plans include $8 million in runway improvements and additional hangar capacity.

The council also discussed long-term street and drainage projects, including a proposed half-cent infrastructure sales tax aimed at funding repairs while reducing property tax burdens. 

Wilkins said, “Once a lot of your costs are in mobilizing and engineering, you can get some efficiencies. That’s the kind of momentum we need within the community.”

City officials plan to implement online permitting through the Planning and Building Department by February 9 to streamline applications for residents and businesses. 

Wilkins concluded, “We’re just going to keep rocking and rolling in the City of Ogallala.”

Among the key items discussed were the setting of county elected official salaries and the county’s insurance renewal process. The board also completed its annual reorganization, with Corey Crandall continuing as chairman of the Keith County Board of Commissioners.

Commissioners reviewed year-end reports and discussed creating a nuisance application process that could be used when applying for nuisance-related grants. The county highway department completed its annual fuel bids and recently purchased a scraper and disc in an effort to improve county road maintenance.

Anderson also noted recent personnel changes. Longtime Keith County employee Lori Hood retired after 40 years of service. Commissioners appointed J.D. Cartwright to fill her role as the county’s new Emergency Operations Center director.

Additional updates included ongoing EMS-related discussions, current jail population numbers, and road conditions impacted by dry winter weather. Anderson said he plans to provide regular monthly updates moving forward and confirmed he will be running for re-election this year.

Ogallala YMCA to Host ‘Try the Y Day’ Open House Jan. 23

Ogallala, Neb. - The Ogallala YMCA is inviting community members to explore its facility, programs, and recent growth during a special open house event later this month.

The event, called “Try the Y Day,” is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 23, with extended hours from 5:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. According to Melissa Ewart, Branch Executive Director of the Ogallala YMCA, the open house is designed to make the YMCA more approachable for newcomers and those curious about recent changes.

During the one-day event, visitors can receive 50% off daily admission fees with full facility access and 10% off annual memberships purchased that day. Attendees will also have the opportunity to try a Boot Camp class at 5:30 p.m., along with free 20-minute personal training consultations with trainer Amber Hilton. Appointments can be scheduled by calling the YMCA or by emailing <a>ahilton@ymcaofscottsbluff.org</a>.

In addition to fitness opportunities, AK Coffee will be on site, and attendees can enter drawings for YMCA prizes throughout the day.

Ewart said the idea behind Try the Y Day is to create a welcoming environment, especially for those who may feel unsure about starting a new workout routine or joining a class. YMCA staff will be available to assist guests with equipment and answer questions.

YMCA CEO Conrad Bostron said the Ogallala branch has seen significant momentum over the past year. During a recent update to the Ogallala City Council, YMCA leadership reported the branch exceeded its first-year budgeted goals by 200%. The facility has also officially been recognized as an independent YMCA branch under the Scotts Bluff umbrella.

The Ogallala YMCA recently hosted its first NSAA-sanctioned high school swim meet, drawing more than 90 participants from Ogallala, North Platte, McCook, and the Scottsbluff-Gering area. Officials confirmed the pool meets the 25-yard requirement, allowing the facility to host future swim competitions.

Youth sports participation continues to grow, with 112 children currently registered for YMCA basketball. Basketball registration remains open until 1 p.m. Mountain Time today, with a $40 registration fee per child. Games will be played on Sunday afternoons. The YMCA is still seeking one to two additional volunteer coaches, particularly for the third-through-fifth-grade and preschool-kindergarten divisions. Volunteer coaches receive credit toward a future YMCA program.

Additional updates include the hiring of Shelby Boer as programs coordinator, who will help oversee youth sports, swim lessons, and upcoming programs. Looking ahead, the YMCA will assume operation of the community after-school program beginning with the 2026 school year under the name YMCA Kids Corner, with current director Keri Curtis remaining in her role.

Community members are encouraged to attend Try the Y Day on Jan. 23 to tour the facility, meet staff, and take advantage of the one-day discounts.

Maywood, Neb. — Nicholas “Nick” High, 29, a former teacher and coach at Maywood Public Schools, was sentenced this morning, Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2026, following his no-contest plea to multiple charges involving sexual misconduct with minors.

Allegations in the case stemmed from multiple incidents involving different minors spanning from 2020 through 2024, according to the amended complaint.

High had pleaded no contest in Frontier County District Court to the amended counts on October 22, 2025. A no-contest plea does not admit guilt but is treated the same as a guilty plea for sentencing purposes.

High was sentenced to 90 days in jail, followed by five years of probation, and will be required to register as a sex offender for 25 years. The sentencing hearing was held at 9 a.m. in Red Willow County District Court following his plea.

The case drew attention due to High’s position as a teacher and coach, raising concerns about the abuse of authority in educational settings.

On Monday, January 12, 2026, the Perkins County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a suspicious green pickup that had pulled into and parked at an abandoned rural farmstead southeast of Venango, Nebraska.

The Sheriff responded and detained Lindsey N. Bartorelli, who was snooping around in a dilapidated building.  She did not have permission nor was she able to provide a reasonable explanation for being on the property, which was clearly posted with more than a few “No Trespassing” signs.  A Chase County Sheriff's Office deputy later arrived to assist as well.  Bartorelli was soon placed under arrest for second-degree trespassing and driving under suspension, resulting in an all expenses paid trip to the Keith County Jail.

The pickup was subsequently towed and impounded, and during the routine inventory of the vehicle, a container with several grams of suspected methamphetamine (yuck) was located among Bartorelli’s belongings, of which may cause her to catch another charge.

All suspects, including Bartorelli, are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, regardless of how questionable their choice of parking location may have been.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Trespassing Arrest in Venango Leads to Possible Drug Charge

Hershey, Neb. — Most people recognize the sound of an auctioneer the moment they hear it. Few stop to think about how someone learns to do it — or how far that skill can take them.

For Seth Schneider of Hershey, Nebraska, it has taken him to the national stage.

Schneider recently placed in the top 10 at a World Livestock Auctioneer Championship qualifying event in Bowman, North Dakota. The finish earned him a spot in the 2026 World Livestock Auctioneer Championship, which will be held in St. Onge, South Dakota.

His path into auctioneering started early and close to home.

“It kind of runs in the family,” Schneider said. “My great-grandpa and my uncle were both auctioneers.”

As a kid, Schneider spent time at the sale barn with his grandmother, who fed a few head of cattle each year. Listening to auctioneers call bids left a strong impression.

“I just always loved listening to the auctioneer,” he said. “That’s when I decided it was something I wanted to do.”

By the time he was six or seven years old, Schneider was already practicing his chant. As he got older, sports and school took more of his time, but the interest never fully went away. In high school, a conversation with his agriculture teacher brought the idea back into focus.

“That’s when it really clicked,” Schneider said. “It just made sense.”

Learning to auction wasn’t easy. Schneider said it takes time and steady practice to find the right rhythm — and even more work to keep it sharp.

“Once you get your chant down, it starts to feel natural,” he said. “But it takes constant practice.”

That work paid off at the Bowman qualifying event, which was hosted by Sioux Falls Regional Livestock of Worthing, South Dakota. The contest marked Schneider’s fourth Livestock Marketing Association qualifying event.

When officials announced the top 10 finishers, Schneider’s name was called last.

“They definitely made me wait,” he said. “I was surprised, but really grateful.”

The competition drew auctioneers from across the United States, Canada and Mexico. Schneider said staying relaxed was important, especially before taking the block.

“You just try to stay calm, visit with people and keep your nerves under control,” he said.

Schneider now works weekly at the North Platte Stockyards and credits much of his growth to mentorship and experience.

“I’m lucky to work behind a really good mentor in Kyle Scowl,” he said. “I’ve learned a lot from him.”

While auctioneering often sounds fast and technical, Schneider said the job is really about people.

Nebraska has a strong history in the World Livestock Auctioneer Championship, though it has been nearly two decades since the state last claimed the top title. The most recent Nebraska world champion was Matt Lowery of Burwell, who won the championship in 2008.

Despite the national recognition, Schneider said his focus remains the same.

“I just want to keep getting better and do the best job I can every week,” he said.

The 2026 World Livestock Auctioneer Championship will be livestreamed on the Livestock Marketing Association’s YouTube page, with a televised special later airing on RFD-TV.

For young people interested in auctioneering, Schneider said persistence matters.

The finish earned him a spot in the 2026 World Livestock Auctioneer Championship, which will be held in St. Onge, South Dakota.His path into auctioneering started early and close to home.“It kind of runs in the family,” Schneider said. “My great-grandpa and my uncle were both auctioneers.”As a kid, Schneider spent time at the sale barn with his grandmother, who fed a few head of cattle each year. Listening to auctioneers call bids left a strong impression.“I just always loved listening to the auctioneer,” he said. “That’s when I decided it was something I wanted to do.”By the time he was six or seven years old, Schneider was already practicing his chant. As he got older, sports and school took more of his time, but the interest never fully went away. In high school, a conversation with his agriculture teacher brought the idea back into focus.“That’s when it really clicked,” Schneider said. “It just made sense.”Learning to auction wasn’t easy. Schneider said it takes time and steady practice to find the right rhythm — and even more work to keep it sharp.“Once you get your chant down, it starts to feel natural,” he said. “But it takes constant practice.”That work paid off at the Bowman qualifying event, which was hosted by Sioux Falls Regional Livestock of Worthing, South Dakota. The contest marked Schneider’s fourth Livestock Marketing Association qualifying event.When officials announced the top 10 finishers, Schneider’s name was called last.“They definitely made me wait,” he said. “I was surprised, but really grateful.”The competition drew auctioneers from across the United States, Canada and Mexico. Ogallala, Ne. - The Ogallala City Council will meet Tuesday evening to address board appointments, licensing items, and receive updates from city departments and community partners.

The regular meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, January 13, at Ogallala City Hall, 411 East 2nd Street.

Council members are expected to begin the evening by approving the consent agenda, which includes the minutes from the December 30 meeting and several board appointments. Two appointments are listed for the Historic Preservation Commission, including Barb Jeffres, who would complete a two-year term through the end of 2026, and Kody Quint, who would begin a three-year term running through 2028.

Appointments are also scheduled for the Planning and Zoning Commission, with Raymond Diaz and Jordan Namuth each slated for three-year terms, and the Tree Board, which includes the appointment of Richard Koester. Council members will also consider a license and permit bond for Tucker Wintholz, along with an application for a master plumbing license under the same name.

During the public forum portion of the meeting, council members will hear a fourth quarter 2025 update from the Ogallala YMCA.

The agenda also includes the December 2025 financial report from the City Clerk-Treasurer, as well as recommendations from city departments. The Airport Advisory Committee will present a request for proposals related to the Searle Field Fixed Base Operator, and the Street Department will bring forward an appointment for City Street Superintendent.

Additional updates are scheduled from the City Attorney and City Manager, including ongoing project updates, followed by reports from individual council members.

The council reserves the right to enter into closed session if necessary, as allowed under Nebraska law. The meeting is open to the public, and written materials related to agenda items will be available for review at City Hall.

The training program will offer multiple dates for initial training and recertification. All sessions will begin at 8:30 a.m., and participants are encouraged to arrive early for check-in. 

Understanding the difference between commercial and noncommercial applicators is important when considering commercial pesticide training.

A noncommercial applicator is a licensed applicator who applies restricted-use pesticides only on land owned or controlled by their employer or for a governmental agency or political subdivision of the state. This category also includes individuals using restricted or general-use pesticides for communitywide outdoor vector control on behalf of a political subdivision of the state.

A commercial applicator is a licensed applicator who applies restricted-use pesticides on a contractual or for-hire basis. This category also includes individuals who use restricted or general-use pesticides for hire or compensation for lawn care, structural pest control or communitywide outdoor vector control.

The Hot Sheets: January 8, 2026

Keith County, NE – Farmers, ranchers, and agricultural businesses across Keith County will be honored at the annual Ag Appreciation Banquet, hosted by the Keith County Chamber of Commerce. The event takes place Monday, January 26, 2026, at the Keith County Fairgrounds, with a social hour beginning at 5:30 p.m. and dinner served at 6:00 p.m.

Chamber Membership Director Dawn Haney said she’s looking forward to the event. “I’m most excited to connect with the community and the people in the community,” Haney said. Tickets must be purchased by January 16, 2026, and can be bought at the Chamber office, either by phone or in person. Tickets for farmers and ranchers are $5 each, while tickets for everyone else are $30.

The Ogallala High School FFA Chapter will assist with the banquet, and funds from the farmer and rancher tickets will go directly to support the chapter. Food for the evening will be catered by Willow &amp; Co.

The evening will feature special guest speaker Amanda Radke, a nationally recognized rancher and advocate for agriculture. Haney said the Chamber is also grateful to its title sponsor, Lake Mac Resort and Casino. “We’re really glad to have them in the community,” she said.

The Ag Appreciation Banquet is a long-standing tradition designed to celebrate the people and businesses who keep Keith County’s agricultural community thriving. “This is a time to gather, connect, and express our gratitude for the individuals and businesses who play such a vital role in Keith County and beyond,” Haney said.

OGALLALA — Local women are proving that small contributions can make a big difference with 100+ Women Who Care – Keith County, a group that combines resources to support nonprofit organizations throughout the county.

The group, organized in 2019, meets four times a year for just one hour, with members contributing $100 each per meeting. The collective donations, often totaling more than $10,000 per quarter, go directly to local charities selected by majority vote at each meeting. Since its first gathering in January 2020, the Keith County chapter has donated more than $233,000 to area nonprofits.

“Even as individuals, it would be difficult to make this kind of impact,” said Keri Anderson, one of the organizers. “But when we come together, the difference we can make for our community is huge.”

Meetings are held upstairs at Front Street in the Hayloft in Ogallala, with women arriving at 5 p.m. for an optional meal and the meeting starting promptly at 6 p.m. Each session features three nonprofits presenting their case for funding with 10-minute presentations and five minutes for questions. Ballots are then counted and the winning organization announced that night, with new presenters drawn for the following quarter.

The group serves communities across Keith County, including Ogallala, Paxton, Keystone, Lemoyne, and Brule. Over the years, donations have supported a wide range of local causes, including, but not limited to, the Paxton Library, Keith County Historical Society, senior centers, Friends of the FFA, Royal Family Kids Camp, the American Legion Post 135, the Regional Arts Council, the Food Pantry, the Backpack Program, and Bridge of Hope.

Anderson said the Paxton Library, the group’s first recipient, had an annual budget of less than $5,000. The $10,000 donation allowed the library to expand services and resources significantly. 

“For them to receive that kind of support in one giving was incredible,” Anderson said.

The upcoming January 12 meeting will feature presentations from Keep Keith County Beautiful, the Backpack Program, and First Impressions. Anderson encourages women interested in joining to attend, even without committing immediately. 

“Come see what it’s all about, talk to the organizations, and see the impact firsthand,” she said.

Meals for the January 12 meeting are optional and require advance orders. Options include creamy mushroom and asparagus chicken penne for $15, chicken corn chowder soup in a bread bowl for $12, and grilled steak tips with mashed potatoes and asparagus for $21. Meal orders must be submitted by 8 a.m. Sunday, though women who do not plan to eat are welcome to attend the meeting at 6 p.m.

Anderson said the group’s impact goes beyond the money donated. “Sometimes you can talk yourself out of giving $50 or $100, but when you join together with a hundred women or more, the impact is huge. Watching these organizations receive funding, seeing their reaction — it’s overwhelming and emotional, and it makes it worth every minute,” she said.

100+ Women Who Care – Keith County offers a simple, meaningful way for women to give back, connect with other community members, and make a lasting local impact — all in just one hour per quarter.

🎙️100+ Women Who Care – Keith County Brings Big Impact to Local Charities

LINCOLN — With Tyson Foods weeks away from shuttering its Lexington beef plant, the anticipated financial blow to the state is becoming clearer. Meanwhile, some workers have made strides to adjust.

The statewide economic loss, including both direct and ripple effects, is estimated at $3.28 billion a year, according to a recently released University of Nebraska-Lincoln analysis.

While public documents reported that a “mass layoff” of 3,212 Tyson workers will occur “on or around” Jan. 20, the UNL study projects more than 7,000 jobs will be lost statewide, along with an annual labor income loss of $530 million. That higher job loss count includes employees in other industries that support the Tyson beef plant operation and its workforce.

Tax revenues also will drop with the exit of Lexington’s largest employer. The projected annual decline in state personal income tax revenue is estimated at $23.2 million, according to&nbsp;<a href="https://cap.unl.edu/news/economic-impacts-tyson-beef-plant-closure-lexington-nebraska/" target="_blank">the Dec. 22 report</a>, and state sales tax proceeds are predicted to slide by $10 million a year.

Dawson County and neighboring communities will feel a concentrated punch, say authors and economics professors Elliott Dennis and Eric Thompson. Dennis specializes in livestock and risk management in UNL’s Department of Agricultural Economics. Thompson is an economist and director of the UNL Bureau of Business Research.&nbsp;

According to their analysis, local sales tax revenues in Dawson County will likely fall by $2.77 million a year due to the plant folding. Tyson has said that certain wind-down activities may continue for a short time beyond the Jan. 20 date.

Thompson called the Tyson plant closure significant statewide, saying he hasn’t seen many local employers “of this scale” close shop in the past few decades. The UNL analysis said the Lexington plant could process nearly 5,000 cattle daily, about 4.8% of total daily U.S. beef slaughter. It said the plant’s demise marks the first time one of the “Big Four” meatpacking companies has permanently closed a major facility during the current cattle supply crunch.

Still, Thompson said, such an occurrence in a market economy is not unnatural.&nbsp;

“The state needs to really focus on getting new investment,” he said.

Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen has said that Tyson officials were exploring options for the Lexington facility that include&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2025/11/24/state-hunts-way-forward-after-nebraska-got-butts-kicked-by-tyson-plant-closure/">repurposing it</a>&nbsp;into a “value-added” ag operation. Tyson has not announced any plan.

U.S. Rep. Mike Flood, R-Neb, has lamented publicly that Tyson about 20 years ago “pulled out” of his hometown of Norfolk, eliminating 1,300 jobs at the company’s stripped and now-abandoned meatpacking facility there, and the property has yet to be repurposed.

Since Tyson announced the Lexington plant closure&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2025/11/21/nebraskans-lament-tyson-decision-to-close-lexington-plant-with-3200-workers/">on Nov. 21</a>, Pillen has said that more than 1,600 people attended job fairs and other events designed to connect displaced workers with potential jobs and state workforce support services. More events are scheduled.

An hour drive from Lexington, the recently opened Sustainable Beef meatpacking plant in North Platte is hiring about 100 more workers and raising its daily cattle processing goal as a result of Tyson’s Lexington announcement, the North Platte Telegraph and Wall Street Journal have reported.

Lexington-area Tyson workers were inquiring about jobs immediately after Arkansas-based Tyson announced the closure. Sustainable Beef CEO David Briggs told the Telegraph that about 400 former Tyson workers already had joined his workforce, some before and some after the Nov. 21 announcement.&nbsp;

Today, the North Platte plant reportedly aims for 1,000 employees and to process 1,800 head of cattle per day.

Rancher-owned Sustainable Beef opened its plant in 2025 and was expected to create a more competitive supply chain against the “Big Four” producers. The four, Tyson, JBS, Cargill and National Beef, control about 83-85% of U.S. beef processing capacity, which, Dennis said, has long been a point of concern for cattle producers regarding market power and price.

For the Dec. 22 economic impact report, the UNL economists drew upon multiple data sources and used the IMpact analysis for PLANing (IMPLAN) model, a tool they described as an industry standard.&nbsp;

 </figure>LINCOLN — With Tyson Foods weeks away from shuttering its Lexington beef plant, the anticipated financial blow to the state is becoming clearer. Meanwhile, some workers have made strides to adjust.The statewide economic loss, including both direct and ripple effects, is estimated at $3.28 billion a year, according to a recently released University of Nebraska-Lincoln analysis.<figure>

 </figure>While public documents reported that a “mass layoff” of 3,212 Tyson workers will occur “on or around” Jan. 20, the UNL study projects more than 7,000 jobs will be lost statewide, along with an annual labor income loss of $530 million. That higher job loss count includes employees in other industries that support the Tyson beef plant operation and its workforce.Tax revenues also will drop with the exit of Lexington’s largest employer. The projected annual decline in state personal income tax revenue is estimated at $23.2 million, according to&nbsp;<a href="https://cap.unl.edu/news/economic-impacts-tyson-beef-plant-closure-lexington-nebraska/" target="_blank">the Dec. 22 report</a>, and state sales tax proceeds are predicted to slide by $10 million a year.Dawson County and neighboring communities will feel a concentrated punch, say authors and economics professors Elliott Dennis and Eric Thompson. Dennis specializes in livestock and risk management in UNL’s Department of Agricultural Economics. Thompson is an economist and director of the UNL Bureau of Business Research.&nbsp;According to their analysis, local sales tax revenues in Dawson County will likely fall by $2.77 million a year due to the plant folding. Tyson has said that certain wind-down activities may continue for a short time beyond the Jan. 20 date.Thompson called the Tyson plant closure significant statewide, saying he hasn’t seen many local employers “of this scale” close shop in the past few decades. The UNL analysis said the Lexington plant could process nearly 5,000 cattle daily, about 4.8% of total daily U.S. beef slaughter. It said the plant’s demise marks the first time one of the “Big Four” meatpacking companies has permanently closed a major facility during the current cattle supply crunch.Still, Thompson said, such an occurrence in a market economy is not unnatural.&nbsp;“The state needs to really focus on getting new investment,” he said.<h2>Norfolk plant still empty</h2>Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen has said that Tyson officials were exploring options for the Lexington facility that include&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2025/11/24/state-hunts-way-forward-after-nebraska-got-butts-kicked-by-tyson-plant-closure/">repurposing it</a>&nbsp;into a “value-added” ag operation. Tyson has not announced any plan.U.S. Rep. Mike Flood, R-Neb, has lamented publicly that Tyson about 20 years ago “pulled out” of his hometown of Norfolk, eliminating 1,300 jobs at the company’s stripped and now-abandoned meatpacking facility there, and the property has yet to be repurposed.Since Tyson announced the Lexington plant closure&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2025/11/21/nebraskans-lament-tyson-decision-to-close-lexington-plant-with-3200-workers/">on Nov. 21</a>, Pillen has said that more than 1,600 people attended job fairs and other events designed to connect displaced workers with potential jobs and state workforce support services. Radon Action Month, observed in January each year, is aimed at raising awareness about radon gas and its health risks. Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) works to educate the public about radon, how it is formed, where it can be found, and the health risks associated with any exposure. Many people are unaware of radon and its dangers, so this month provides an opportunity to share important information.

“Radon is present in every home and building. The only way to determine the radon levels in each home and building is through testing,” states Sarah Minnick, Program Manager at SWNPHD. “Nebraska has a very high rate of radon in homes. Around half the homes in Nebraska that are tested for radon get a result that is higher than the safety level.”

Homes are more at risk for radon exposure when:

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends testing homes for radon every two years. Radon test kits can be purchased at most hardware stores or online, and residents of the nine-county health district can stop by SWNPHD offices in McCook or Ogallala for a free Radon Test Kit. SWNPHD gave out just under 50 radon test kits to residents during 2025.

For homes that register elevated radon levels, a licensed radon professional can help with mitigation. Radon mitigation is the process used to decrease radon levels within a home. The Nebraska Radon Resistant New Construction Act was passed in 2019, meaning that all new construction must have radon-resistant features, which has helped to lower radon exposure in Nebraska.

Eagle Communications in North Platte is entering a new chapter with the promotion of Paxton Gordon to Operations Manager, a move that reflects both the company’s commitment to internal growth and Gordon’s steady rise within the organization.

Gordon officially stepped into the role at the start of the new year after longtime Operations Manager Derek Beck departed Eagle Communications to pursue his own venture, Your Ag Network. Beck had worked for Eagle Communications for just over five years, celebrating his five-year Eagle anniversary in December.

Beck’s departure followed months of transition planning, allowing for a smooth handoff of responsibilities and providing Gordon time to prepare for the role.

For Gordon, the promotion represents both an opportunity and a challenge. Now overseeing operations for five Eagle radio stations in North Platte, he is responsible for keeping the day-to-day mechanics of the stations running while supporting on-air staff, production, and sports coverage.

“They’re like my children now,” Gordon said, referring to the stations. “I have to always worry about them.”

Gordon, a Kansas State University graduate, earned his degree in Mass Communications and Journalism from the A.Q. Miller School of Journalism. His path into broadcasting, however, was not a straightforward one. He initially entered college planning to follow family members into aerospace engineering before realizing that career path wasn’t the right fit.

Radio, it turned out, had already been quietly shaping his future.

Growing up, Gordon spent his early morning drives to school listening to a local sports radio show hosted by broadcaster Jim Davis, whom he still considers an inspiration. That daily routine sparked an interest that followed him through high school and into college, eventually steering him toward broadcasting.

A pivotal moment came during a conversation with longtime Kansas State play-by-play broadcaster Wyatt Thompson, who helped Gordon better understand the possibilities within the field.“That was really the start of everything,” Gordon said, reflecting on the moment he realized radio could be his future.After graduating in 2021, Gordon accepted his first broadcasting position in Marysville, Kansas. While the job provided valuable experience, the daily hour-long commute prompted him to explore other opportunities. After interning for Eagle in Manhattan, KS he was eventually offered the full-time Sports Director position in North Platte.Gordon relocated to North Platte within weeks and quickly became a familiar voice across Eagle’s stations. In addition to sports coverage, he took on production responsibilities, steadily expanding his role behind the scenes.Now nearing four years with the company, Gordon’s promotion to Operations Manager aligns with Eagle Communications’ long-standing practice of promoting from within.“It’s one big family,” Gordon said. “They like to keep things internal, reward people who work hard, and keep good people around.”Stepping into the Operations Manager role means following Beck, whom Gordon credits as both a mentor and a respected leader during his five-plus years with the company.“Derek’s a superstar in terms of what he’s done,” Gordon said. “There are big shoes to fill.”In the short term, Gordon will continue handling sports duties through the end of basketball season. Coverage of North Platte Community College and North Platte High School games will remain unchanged for now, with a transition planned as Eagle moves into spring sports. Eagle Communications is actively working to fill the Sports Director and Production Manager position, allowing Gordon to fully focus on his expanded leadership role.Despite recent staffing changes across departments, Gordon emphasized that listeners should not expect major disruptions.“We’ve been pretty adaptable over the last few years,” he said. “I don’t think anything too drastic is going to change.”Those changes include on-air schedule adjustments and internal role shifts that Gordon believes strengthen the overall lineup while maintaining the consistency radio audiences value.Even as the youngest member of the office, Gordon now leads the North Platte operation, a responsibility he approaches with humility and humor. He credits teamwork, routine, and what he jokingly refers to as the office’s “feng shui” for keeping things running smoothly.“It’s definitely a little weird,” he said of the transition. “But it was time to take on a new challenge.”As he begins his first full week as Operations Manager, Gordon remains focused on stability, growth, and serving the North Platte community through local radio.“Nothing’s really going to change,” Gordon said. “It’s going to be the same great radio.
