The Hot Sheets: September 13, 2025

SEPTEMBER 12, 2025 (ALLIANCE, NEB.)  — Investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested multiple people in connection with a suspected homicide in western Nebraska.  

Thursday, investigators located human remains in rural Box Butte County. Investigators are working to positively identify the person. The person is believed to be the victim of a homicide. 

Investigators have arrested Tamara Bingham, 26, of Alliance, for first degree murder. Investigators have also arrested Matthew Landreth, 36, as an accessory to a felony. This is an active investigation and remains ongoing. 

NSP has been assisted by the Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office, Alliance Police Department, Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office, WING Task Force, the Sheridan and Box Butte County Attorneys, and the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office.  

NSP continues investigating a missing person case involving Ebram Anthony Sifuentes, 32, who is missing from Alliance. He had reportedly last been seen on August 27.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — Standing on the corner of D and Dewey streets Friday morning, Brian Harris waved American flags and displayed signs in memory of Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated Thursday.

“I just felt compelled to do something for the people,” Harris said. “I know some people are afraid to actually put their face in public, and I just felt the need that I had to do this.”

Harris described feeling “shock, devastated, angry, sad” when he first heard the news. He said Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, was more than a political figure — he was a husband, father and advocate for free speech.

“He was the biggest advocate for our young folks,” Harris said. “Our kids are being indoctrinated into this brainwashing at the colleges and being educated in a way that is not good with God or good with people.”

Harris said he has followed Kirk since he launched Turning Point at age 18. He pointed to former President Donald Trump’s praise of Kirk and said even some who disagreed with him respected him as a person.

“Even had a John McClever that didn’t like what Charlie Kirk said, but he still understood that he was a man, he is a person, and he was sorry that he got killed,” Harris said.

As drivers passed, several honked their horns in support. Harris said he hopes the display reminds people that the issue goes beyond politics.

“This is a human issue where we should all believe that no life should be taken,” Harris said.

Bringing it Local: North Platte man honors Charlie Kirk with downtown display

Three individuals&nbsp;honored for conservation work

LINCOLN, Nebraska&nbsp;– During Husker Harvest Days Sept. 10, Nebraska’s Natural Resources Districts (NRDs) recognized three individuals, who will be inducted into the NRD Hall of Fame later this month.

“Nebraska’s Natural Resources Districts involve many dedicated individuals working to protect our natural resources,” said Martin Graff, president of the Nebraska Association of Resources Districts (NARD). “We’re proud to recognize these outstanding individuals for the significant improvements they’ve made to our natural resources, and the NRD Hall of Fame is one small way to thank them.”

Annually, Nebraska’s NRDs nominate and vote for individuals who have made significant contributions to improving the state’s natural resources. Hall of Fame categories include an NRD Director, NRD Employee and NRD Supporter. The NRD Supporter includes an individual outside the NRD system who has shown tremendous care and leadership in Nebraska’s ongoing conservation efforts.

<a>James Meismer served 34 years on the Twin Platte NRD Board. His impact extends statewide through his 28 years on the Nebraska Association of Resources Districts Board, where he chaired the Legislative Committee.</a>

A strong advocate for sound water policy, Meismer served on the Water Policy Task Force, whose work helped establish integrated management of groundwater and surface water in Nebraska. He also contributed to conservation at the federal level as an advisor to the Platte River Whooping Crane Maintenance Trust now the Crane Trust.

A respected farmer, rancher, and veterinarian, Meismer is known for his commitment to protecting Nebraska’s natural resources.

<a>With 33 years of service, John Miyoshi is recognized for his leadership and dedication to conservation. As the Lower Platte North NRD general manager, Miyoshi oversaw multi-million-dollar budgets and led major projects in soil conservation, water quality and quantity, and flood control. He was instrumental in securing federal funding for the Upper Wahoo Creek Watershed flood reduction dams, that began construction this year.</a>

Miyoshi championed innovation, especially in GIS and data management, helping NRD and NRCS staff work more efficiently. He played a key role in projects like the Sand Creek Environmental Restoration Project (Lake Wanahoo), the Western Sarpy/Clear Creek Levee Project, and rural water systems for Bruno and Colon, Nebraska.

Known for building strong partnerships across all levels of government, Miyoshi brought people together around shared goals—even on controversial efforts. His legacy includes the establishment of the Lower Platte North NRD’s Ground Water Quality and Quantity Management Area, reflecting his commitment to protecting Nebraska’s resources.

Martha “Marty” Link – NRD Supporter

With a 32-year career at the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy, Marty Link is known for leadership, technical expertise, and enduring partnership with Nebraska’s NRDs. A professional geologist and Buffalo County native, Link played a pivotal role in groundwater protection, beginning with the Groundwater Management Area Program and later supervising the groundwater, wellhead protection, and nonpoint source programs.

Link championed collaboration with NRDs, mentored staff, and helped shape local groundwater management plans. Known for her approachability and ability to translate complex science into plain language, Link built trust across all 23 NRDs. She was a regular presence at NRD board and manager meetings, the Water Programs Conference, and NARD events.

Her legacy reflects a deep passion for natural resources and a unique ability to connect with everyone—from farmers to EPA officials.

OGALLALA, Neb. — Downtown Ogallala is set to come alive with laughter, music, and 70s flair as the first-ever Mrs. Roper Romp &amp; Pub Crawl takes over the streets on Saturday, September 20, from 4 to 8 p.m.

The event promises a non-traditional way to support the local American Legion Post 135 while embracing a spirit of fun and community. Attendees — from Helens and Stanleys to Jacks, Chrissys, and even Mr. Furleys — are encouraged to channel their inner 70s personas with kaftans and groovy vibes. For those who need a costume, Helen’s Boutique will be open to help participants get into character.

The romp will have participants hopping between “Romp Stomp” locations across downtown, including the Legion, Second Chapter, Little Jerry’s, Underpass, and Driftwood. Along the way, attendees will enjoy raffle baskets, groovy 70s music, food, drinks, and plenty of silliness. The fun continues at Rendezvous Square, where participants can join in the Indian Summer Rendezvous concerts happening that night.

All funds raised will directly benefit the Legion, supporting its ongoing efforts and programs for veterans and the local community. Inspired by a similar romp held in Columbus this summer, the Ogallala event promises to combine nostalgia, entertainment, and charity in one unique package.

LINCOLN, Neb. — The&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;Leadership Education/Action Development (LEAD) Program is pleased to announce the selection of 27 exceptional individuals as Fellows of&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;LEAD Class 44. Chosen for their leadership potential, commitment to agriculture and dedication to their communities, these Fellows represent a wide range of backgrounds within&nbsp;Nebraska’s agricultural industry.

Starting this September and over the next two years, Class 44 Fellows will engage in a comprehensive curriculum designed to strengthen their leadership skills, expand their knowledge of state, national and global agricultural issues, all&nbsp;while preparing them to serve as leaders in their communities and industries.

“I am thrilled to welcome this outstanding group of individuals to&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;LEAD Class 44,” said Kurtis Harms, Director of the&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;LEAD Program. “Nebraska&nbsp;LEAD Class 44 represents the next generation of leaders who will help guide our state forward. These individuals bring unique experiences, perspectives and energy to the program. Nebraska LEAD Program Announces Class 44 Fellows; One North Platte Native in Class

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — Get ready, North Platte! St. Patrick’s Church is rolling out two full days of food, games, music, and family fun for its annual Block Party this weekend.

The celebration kicks off Saturday, Sept. 13, from 6:30 to 11 p.m. with an evening designed for adults. Guests can enjoy live music from Kim Baxter, a free-will donation nacho bar prepared by parish volunteers, and a beer garden featuring local craft brews from Ape Ship. The party takes over the parking lot at 5th and Walnut streets, and everyone is welcome — no church membership required.

Sunday, Sept. 14, from noon to 3 p.m., shifts the spotlight to families. Kids can jump into bounce houses, play cornhole and pickleball, or join games run by local sports teams, while parents enjoy a barbecue luncheon featuring shredded beef, scalloped potatoes, green beans, and pies for $12 per plate or $40 per family. The street north of the church will be blocked off to create a safe, festive space for everyone.

Raffles add extra excitement this year. Prizes include $500 cash, gift cards, and coveted reserved pews for Christmas Mass. A special $50 raffle offers one lucky winner a full year of tuition at North Platte Catholic Schools — only 200 tickets will be sold.

“Part of our faith is where God makes us part of His family. And what do families do? They get together,” said Father Johnathan Sorensen. “This block party is a big old family party.”

Maddy Krebs, a member of the organizing committee, said, “We wanted to create something for everyone — adults, kids, families, and anyone in the community who wants to come out. Seeing people connect and have fun is what makes it all worth it.”

She added, “It takes a lot of planning and support from local businesses and volunteers, but the smiles on people’s faces make it all worth it. I love watching kids play and families enjoy the day together.”

The weekend format, introduced three years ago, gives adults a night out while keeping Sunday fun for families and children. Volunteers and parishioners spend months preparing, with support from local businesses that donate meals, prizes, and other essentials.

“Community is at the heart of this event,” Father Sorensen said. “Whether it’s sharing a meal, winning a raffle, or just laughing together, it’s about building relationships and celebrating together.”

For many, the sound echoed not just across the nation’s history, but into personal memory.

What makes this year different, nearly a quarter-century later, is that an entire generation of Americans is growing up with no personal memory of 9/11. College students and young service members now were born after the attacks. For them, Patriot Day is history—something taught, not lived. NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — After years of running boards, hosting shows, and chasing stories across Nebraska, Allison Peck is now the news director North Platte didn’t know it needed — until now. Listeners quickly noticed her arrival on the airwaves, sending emails and texts praising the “new news lady” — articulate, clear, and engaging.

Peck is Eagle Media’s storyteller behind North Platte Post and Sandhills Post, bringing a mix of experience, energy, and a passion for local stories.

“Allison was the one we were waiting for,” said Operations Manager Derek Beck. “We had a lot of people that applied for this job. We were super picky about it, so this job’s been open since April I think. We really, really wanted to make sure that we didn’t hit a single or a double — we really wanted to hit a home run and we were very patient.”

Peck’s journey in radio began in McCook in 2016. Then a college student, she balanced her time between running the board for live sports broadcasts and serving as an unpaid intern. She managed summer remote events, hosted her own show, and even delivered weather forecasts. Within a year, she was promoted to paid intern while pursuing theater and media communications at Doane University.

When she returned to McCook in 2019, Peck took on a full-time role in sales. She also hosted a midday show, continued weather reports, and occasionally board operated. She worked closely with the operations manager daily, an experience that gave her a front-row seat to the complexities of running a station.

Those years gave her a reputation for versatility. “Which you can see, is why she was a really great candidate for this job, because [she's] kind of a Swiss Army knife that knows how to do a lot of things,” Beck said. “...but I kind of turned [her] loose after three days and said, hey, go do it.”

In fall of 2020, Peck left McCook to move to Lincoln. She worked as a client marketing coordinator in sales for NRG Media from May 2021 through September. That fall, her first daughter, Raegan, was born, and Peck stepped away from broadcasting and sales to focus on motherhood.

The next three years were a whirlwind of moves — a return to McCook, a short stay in Mitchell, then a year in Ogallala. Along the way, Peck and her husband, Joseph — a North Platte native and now EMT — welcomed their second daughter, Ryleigh, this past April.

“Being a stay-at-home mom was the most rewarding and the most overwhelming thing I’ve ever done,” Peck said. “I loved every moment with my girls, but I also felt like I was missing a part of myself.&nbsp; — My husband even says I come home happier. I feel like everyone gets a better version of me.”

For Beck, who worked with Peck years ago in McCook, seeing her return to radio was both exciting and natural. “You kind of have it in your head who that person might be or what they would sound like,” he said. “Literally when I saw [her] application come through, I’m like box checked, box checked, box checked.”

Listeners have echoed his confidence. “I don’t know how many texts and emails I’ve had saying hey, we like the new news lady. She sounds really good. She’s very articulate. The news is really good,” Beck said.

Now based in North Platte, Peck has taken on the dual role of directing news coverage and hosting Good Morning North Platte at 9 a.m. on 98.1 FM. She describes herself first and foremost as a storyteller — a passion rooted in theater from the age of five and carried through her years of writing, reporting, and broadcasting.

“You do, you kind of light up about the news stuff,” Beck told her during their on-air introduction. “You’re easy to listen to. We’re just gonna continue to let you do some of the things that you enjoy doing. But I think that morning show on 98.1 has got your name kind of written all over it.” That show airs from 6 a.m to 10 a.m. with news and interview focus from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Peck said she hopes the community will share stories with her. 

“There’s only one of me and there’s a very big town,” she said. “If there’s news out there that I don’t know about that I should know about, if there’s an event happening that should be a story — yeah, definitely reach out. OREM, Utah&nbsp; —&nbsp;President Donald Trump announced today that conservative activist Charlie Kirk has died after being shot during an event in Utah.

 Conservative activist Charlie Kirk was shot Wednesday while speaking at Utah Valley University, sending students scrambling for cover and prompting a massive law enforcement response.

Kirk, 31, was hit in the neck just after noon during a <a href="https://tpusa.com/">Turning Point USA</a> event in the school’s Sorensen Center courtyard. He had been answering a question from a student at a “Prove Me Wrong” debate table when a single shot rang out.

Witnesses said Kirk grabbed his neck and collapsed as blood became visible. “It was one shot, aimed directly at him,” said former Utah congressman Jason Chaffetz, who was on campus and saw the shooting unfold.

Video from the event showed students screaming, diving for the ground, and rushing away from the courtyard.&nbsp;

Campus officials initially reported that a suspect had been taken into custody but later walked back that statement. Police said the person detained was not the shooter, who remains at large. Authorities believe the shot came from about 200 yards away, fired from a nearby building.

Kirk was rushed by security to a local hospital, where he was listed in critical condition and ultimately died.

The university immediately placed the campus on lockdown, canceled classes and events for the rest of the day, and advised students to either shelter in place or evacuate with police guidance.

The FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives joined local officers in the investigation.

National leaders from both parties condemned the violence. Former President Donald Trump called Kirk “a great guy from top to bottom” and urged Americans to pray for him. Vice President J.D. Vance called Kirk “a genuinely good guy and a young father,” while Democratic House Leader Hakeem Jeffries said political violence must not be tolerated.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom called the shooting “disgusting, vile and reprehensible.”

Kirk, a close Trump ally, co-founded Turning Point USA in 2012 and is known for hosting provocative debates on college campuses. Wednesday’s event was part of his “American Comeback Tour,” which features his signature “Prove Me Wrong” sessions with students.

Kirk has long been an outspoken supporter of the Second Amendment, often arguing that armed citizens are essential to protecting freedom and deterring government overreach. Through Turning Point USA and his media platforms, he has opposed new gun restrictions and aligned himself with groups that advocate expansive gun rights.

Just before the shot that fatally killed Kirk, he was fielding questions about mass shootings and gun violence.&nbsp;

"Do you know how many transgender Americans have been mass shooters over the last 10 years?" an audience member asked. Kirk responded with a simple, "too many."&nbsp;

The follow up question: "Do you know how many mass shooters there have been in America over the last 10 years?"&nbsp;

"Counting or not counting gang violence?" Kirk asked in clarification.

Kirk was noted as going limp in his chair.&nbsp;

Utah Valley University said counseling resources will be available to students and staff in the coming days.

Close friend of Kirk and political commentator, Brilyn Hollyhand said in an interview with Fox News "I want viewers to remember Charlie as a family man... Who took still took the time to turn his phone off on Sundays. To go to church with his kids. To go to church with his wife. And those are who people are thinking of right now. His amazing wife Erica, his two young children. What do you say to them now? Do you say that dad went to speak at a college campus, a place of free expression and he never came home?"&nbsp;

 Hollyhand drove home that Kirk always opened his talks with "if we disagree please come to the front of the line." He believes this person who disagreed with him could have solved everything just by talking and Kirk would still be here.&nbsp;

As summer comes to an end, so does the 2025 season of the Sandhills Ranch Internships. Over the past three months, 13 interns have been working on ranches throughout the Sandhills, side by side with experienced ranchers and participating in the daily activities of ranch life.

 To celebrate this achievement, interns, mentors, and the Sandhills Task Force gathered for a wrap-up event in Halsey. The day included a tour of Downing Ranch, where Tim, Bonnie, and Brett Downing showcased important sites, emphasizing cross-fencing and water systems that have improved their carrying capacity and pasture health. The Downing's also highlighted the value of continuous learning and sustainable practices. This tour provided an excellent conclusion to a summer dedicated to ranching and offered a valuable learning experience. 

After the tour, participants gathered at the Community Building in Halsey for a recap meeting and dinner. They shared memorable experiences and discussed potential improvements to the program. Many interns expressed newfound confidence and a desire to pursue careers in ranching. These internships provided valuable knowledge and skills in ranching, while also emphasizing important values such as responsibility, resilience, and care for the land and livestock. These values are essential not only in ranching but also in their communities. 

We would like to express our gratitude to the interns for their dedication and hard work. We also thank the ranch families for welcoming them into their homes and sharing their ranch operations, as well as the communities that have embraced them. Here’s to the next generation of ranchers and agricultural leaders, who are shaped by experiences like these.

NSP Seeks Public Help in Missing Person Investigation

SUTHERLAND, Neb. — The Sutherland Volunteer Fire Department will host its first-ever pancake feed this Sunday, Sept. 14, as a new fundraiser and community event.

The feed will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Sutherland Fire Station, 1400 West 1st St., with the local Kiwanis Club providing the griddles and cooking support. Attendees can enjoy all-you-can-eat pancakes, sausage and drinks for a freewill donation.

Firefighter and EMT Tyrel Fear said the department wanted to try something a little different from the traditional spaghetti or hamburger feeds hosted in surrounding towns. “We wanted something family oriented and easy to put together, and a pancake feed just made sense,” Fear said.

Beyond breakfast, the event is designed to give the public a chance to meet first responders in a relaxed setting. Fire trucks and equipment will be on display, and members of the department will be on hand to answer questions. “That’s mainly what this event is for,” Fear said. “To visit with the community in a non-emergent situation.”

The feed also comes as the department welcomes several new EMTs, with five women recently completing their training and awaiting certification. Fear said funds raised will support ongoing training and equipment needs. “There’s always something that comes up — whether it’s new techniques, extrication classes, or updates to equipment,” he said.

Organizers say they hope for a strong turnout Sunday. “We’re really looking forward to seeing everyone,” Fear said.

Council members will act on several license renewals for contractor and plumbing work, including gas fitter, master plumber, right-of-way contractor and sewer contractor licenses for John C. Piepho.

The council will also hear financial updates from the city clerk-treasurer, including the August 2025 financial report, and review minutes from both the special and regular meetings held Aug. 26.

Under new business, the council will consider a permit application from Daniel Nelson seeking approval to keep 12 chickens at 205 L&amp;L Court. Project updates from the city manager and reports from council members are also expected.

The meeting will open with roll call and a public forum before closing with council and staff reports.

United States Attorney Lesley A. Woods announced that Dustin Noble, 46, of North Platte, Nebraska, was sentenced on September 4, 2025, in federal court in Lincoln, Nebraska, for Conspiracy to violate the Lacey Act. United States District Judge Susan M. Bazis sentenced Noble to 22 months’ imprisonment. There is no parole in the federal system. After Noble’s release from prison, he will begin a three-year term of supervised release. Noble was ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $179,680. Pursuant to the terms of a plea agreement, Noble forfeited multiple unlawfully taken wildlife taxidermy mounts, two crossbows, and several firearms. The Court also ordered that Noble shall not hunt, fish, trap, guide, outfit, or otherwise associate or be in the field with anyone engaged in those activities for 25 years, and shall not conduct, assist, or associate with any fish or wildlife taxidermy activities or be present, or assist with taxidermy services for 10 years.

Enacted 125 years ago, the Lacey Act protects the nation’s wildlife resources by prohibiting wildlife violations that cross state or international borders. A joint investigation conducted by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, Office of Law Enforcement and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, Law Enforcement Division determined that Noble provided illegal hunting and guiding services to paying clients, family, and other associates, many from outside the state of Nebraska, between 2015 and 2021, while operating Noble Outdoors, a big game guiding business in North Platte. Noble also operated a commercial taxidermy business providing services of converting hides, skins, antlers, and other trophy parts of wildlife into taxidermy mounts. Some of Noble’s taxidermy clients included hunters unlawfully guided by Noble.

The investigation determined Noble charged paying clients $1,200 to $4,000 depending upon the target species and conducted the guided hunts in at least Lincoln, Hayes, and Frontier counties in Nebraska. During those hunts Noble’s friends, associates and/or clients agreed with Noble to violate Nebraska hunting laws to take wildlife including mule deer and wild turkeys. Noble employed various tactics and unlawful methods to increase the probability of locating, killing, and acquiring trophy wildlife including using specialized hunting equipment comprised of firearm sound suppressors and thermal optics; taking wildlife from upon or close to the road; taking wildlife during night-time or closed season hours; and hunting upon privately owned properties without the knowledge or permission of the landowner. Under Nebraska state law, hunters are prohibited from possessing firearms or using firearms to hunt deer during the archery season, are prohibited from shooting from or over a roadway, are authorized to hunt only during the legal shooting hours from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset, and must have landowner permission to hunt on private property.

The investigation substantiated 114 unlawful hunts conducted by Noble during the course of the conspiracy with the vast majority occurring between 2018 and 2020. Noble’s unlawful activities primarily targeted trophy-sized mule deer, including early season mule deer in velvet antlers. As revealed by extensive evidence obtained during this investigation, Noble’s illegal hunts included the taking of more than 12 species of wildlife, including most notably: 61 mule deer, 33 wild turkeys, 4 pronghorn, 3 white-tailed deer, an American alligator, a timber rattlesnake, and approximately 12 upland game birds, migratory non-game birds, game fish, and furbearing or non-game animals.

Prior to his conduct in this case, Noble was subject to a Nebraska Game and Parks Commission investigation and was charged with 71 counts. He was ultimately convicted on 10 counts in Dawson County Court, Nebraska, in February 2014. As part of his sentencing, he was subject to a 10-year hunting, fishing, and trapping revocation in the State of Nebraska. The current state/federal investigation revealed extensive and ongoing hunting violations committed, aided, and directed by Noble while his hunting privileges were revoked from his prior state conviction.

Today’s sentencing marks the near conclusion of the ongoing prosecution of numerous defendants related to violations committed by Noble Outdoors and its owner, associates, and clients between 2015 and 2021. To date, 19 defendants have been sentenced and ordered to pay a more than $255,000 in fines and restitution for state and federal violations related to the interstate transport of unlawfully taken wildlife. The investigation included the seizure and subsequent forfeiture or abandonment of more than 50 trophy wildlife antlers or taxidermy mounts from 27 Noble Outdoors clients or associates.

United States Attorney Woods said, “This case demonstrates what state and federal law enforcement can accomplish when they join forces and unite in a common pursuit of justice.&nbsp; Wildlife resources should be fairly preserved for the enjoyment of all Nebraskans – both present and future.&nbsp; Noble’s destructive tactics and actions targeted Nebraska’s mule deer populations in a manner that jeopardized the ability of Nebraskans to continue to enjoy a lawful hunting experience in the future.&nbsp; The United States Attorney’s Office is proud to join with our partners at U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission to ensure that Nebraska’s resources are protected and available to all its citizens equally.”

The Hot Sheets: September 6, 2025

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) was notified of two more groups of mosquitoes that have tested positive for West Nile Virus. This is a time to take extra care to protect yourself from mosquito bites. This is the fourth group of mosquitoes to test positive this year in Red Willow County. The last time more than 2 groups of mosquitoes tested positive for West Nile in southwest Nebraska was in 2018.

Most people who get infected with West Nile do not have any symptoms, however, occasionally West Nile Virus can cause severe illness. There is no vaccine against West Nile for humans. The most common symptoms are fever, body aches, and fatigue that can last for weeks or months. Less often, people develop severe illness such as swelling in the brain or spinal cord leading to weakness, paralysis, or death.

“West Nile Virus only spreads when a mosquito carrying the virus bites a person, horse, or other animal,” explains Sarah Minnick, Program Manager for SWNPHD. “This means the best protection from West Nile is to prevent mosquito bites.”

The following tips can be used to help prevent the spread of West Nile:

 </figure>For Immediate ReleaseSouthwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) was notified of two more groups of mosquitoes that have tested positive for West Nile Virus. This is a time to take extra care to protect yourself from mosquito bites. This is the fourth group of mosquitoes to test positive this year in Red Willow County. The last time more than 2 groups of mosquitoes tested positive for West Nile in southwest Nebraska was in 2018.Most people who get infected with West Nile do not have any symptoms, however, occasionally West Nile Virus can cause severe illness. There is no vaccine against West Nile for humans. The most common symptoms are fever, body aches, and fatigue that can last for weeks or months. Less often, people develop severe illness such as swelling in the brain or spinal cord leading to weakness, paralysis, or death.“West Nile Virus only spreads when a mosquito carrying the virus bites a person, horse, or other animal,” explains Sarah Minnick, Program Manager for SWNPHD. “This means the best protection from West Nile is to prevent mosquito bites.”The following tips can be used to help prevent the spread of West Nile:<ul>
 <li>· Apply an EPA approved repellent like DEET before spending time outside.</li>
 </ul><ul>
 <li>· Wear long sleeves and long pants, especially if you will be out during dawn and dusk.</li>
 </ul><ul>
 <li>· Check your property for standing water and remove or drain it.</li>
 </ul><ul>
 <li>· Use mosquito dunks in standing water that cannot be drained, such as birdbaths, ponds, troughs, or other water sources. These products are safe for animals, birds, fish, and people.</li>
 </ul><ul>
 <li>· Vaccinate horses in the spring.</li>
 </ul><ul>
 <li>· House horses indoors during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.</li>
 </ul><ul>
 <li>· Avoid turning on lights in the barn and use incandescent bulbs around the perimeter of the stable.</li>

Time to Protect Against West Nile Virus: 4th Positive Pool of Mosquitoes

LINCOLN — The Nebraska Legislature’s Urban Affairs Committee will hold a public hearing next week on Legislative Resolution 148, which focuses on the McCook Work Ethic Camp.

The hearing will take place at the State Capitol in Lincoln, Room 1507, on Thursday, Sept. 12. It will be livestreamed on Nebraska Public Media and archived on the Legislature’s website under LR 148.

Residents who wish to comment must submit written testimony online at least 24 hours before the hearing for it to be included in the official record. Comments are noted at the hearing but not read aloud. Those wanting to speak in person may do so during the hearing, though testimony time limits are expected to be around three minutes per person.

The hearing will primarily focus on building code issues related to the facility, but lawmakers have said other community concerns may be heard. Representatives from the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services have been invited, though ICE officials have not.

Following the hearing, the committee will prepare a report on its findings. No follow-up hearing in McCook is planned, though several senators indicated they intend to visit the facility.

Gov. Jim Pillen’s late August announcement that the Work Ethic Camp (WEC) north of McCook will become an ICE detention facility came as a shock to the staff.

Employees learned of the plan only one hour before the news became public. Pillen attempted to reassure them: “All of the folks that work in the facility, the 85 or 86 people that are employed and work at the Department of Corrections, will continue in the same fashion.”The facility is expected to operate under a 365-day contract, with the option to extend. Staff will be converted to ICE-aligned operations, receiving “orientation specific to ICE standards.” Still, uncertainty remains among employees and families regarding the long-term fate of the facility and their employment post-contract.<h2>State Pushed to Offer WEC to Federal Government</h2>Recent legislative testimony confirmed the state offered WEC, not the other way around. State Sen. Wendy DeBoer said, “Nebraska reached out, and then was given a number of questions…about staffing levels and things like that.” She also clarified lawmakers are waiting on a formal agreement: “We’re told if and when an agreement is made…at that point at least the legislature will be apprised of that.” Sen. Victor Rountree noted concerns over costs for the state. Locals in McCook also question what kind of support the government will offer to the town. <h2>McCook Officials Limited by Federal Property Ownership</h2>McCook city officials and Red Willow County leaders have emphasized that the WEC sits on state-owned land, limiting local control over zoning and permitting. In a joint press release, officials explained, “Because it is State of Nebraska owned property, the zoning regulations and procedures that apply to standard use matters, do not apply. This distinction…means that the state may proceed independently of local zoning ordinances.”Despite this limitation, city leaders stressed their commitment to community development and safety. “Our priority is to continue building a community where people are proud to live, work, and play,” the press release said. Ongoing community projects include the P.F.C. Gerald L. Walters Youth Sports Complex, the expansion of McCook Industrial Park Phase II, the North Pointe Subdivision, and the recently completed McCook Aquatic Center, all of which aim to enhance recreational, residential, and commercial opportunities for residents. City and county officials emphasized transparency and promised to keep the public informed as additional details about the facility become available.<h2>Overcrowding Pressure Mounts as Inmates Must Be Relocated</h2>Nebraska’s prison system faces significant overcrowding, currently operating at 147% of its design capacity, according to the Inspector General of Corrections’ 2025 annual report.The transfer of 186 inmates from WEC is expected to take place over a 45–60 day period. Relocating existing WEC inmates will require logistical planning, as the state’s detention facilities are stretched thin. Pillen highlighted the operational flexibility of the state’s corrections system, but acknowledged the challenges: “We have flex in our operational capacity of our prisons…we’re focused on operational capacity.” The move underscores the delicate balance between repurposing existing facilities for federal use and maintaining stability in Nebraska’s already overburdened prison system.<h2>Public Outcry: Protests and 18,000+ Petition Signatures</h2>Opposition has surged statewide. On September 1, protestors in North Platte joined a nationwide movement against Trump-era immigration policies. Public opposition to the ICE detention facility in McCook has spread quickly across the state. A petition launched by advocacy groups has gathered more than 18,300 signatures from residents in 386 towns and cities, according to organizers.<figure>

 </figure>In their statement, organizers said: “Nebraskans made it clear: More than 18,300 people from 386 towns and cities throughout our state signed this petition saying this is NOT who we are. Nebraska is a state that welcomes our neighbors and values the contributions of local moms, dads, coworkers, neighbors, and friends.”<figure>

 </figure>The petition also pointed to the lack of federal immigration reform, noting that U.S. immigration laws have not been meaningfully updated in nearly 40 years. “We need policy change, NOT punishment,” the statement read.Organizers warned that opening the detention center could damage Nebraska’s reputation, linking it to family separation and expanded enforcement actions. They urged Governor Jim Pillen to reject what they called “a cruel and harmful ICE detainment camp” and instead represent “Nebraska values.”<figure>

 </figure><h2>Staffing Expansion and Security Plans Raise Questions</h2>The ICE conversion will include 20 National Guard personnel and six State Patrol officers joining WEC staff, with roles in administrative support and logistics. Pillen said: “They will assist ICE in administrative taking fingerprints, doing swabs, checking people in and out, working with transportation logistics.” While the state maintains all current WEC staff are safe under the contract, lawmakers are watching closely to see if benefits and training remain intact.<h2>Next Steps Clouded Amid Legislative Oversight Calls</h2>No agreement has been formally signed, though state officials anticipate a 365-day intergovernmental service contract."And you can be rest assured I and your mayor are going to make sure nothing changes in the community of McCook," said Gov. Pillen in his McCook&nbsp; press conference Aug. 19. "That security is actually enhanced and that it will. McCook will go down in history, making an extraordinary difference in correcting some really, really silly things that have taken place in this country in the last four years."Lawmakers expressed frustration over the lack of legislative involvement: “The executive branch has been responsive…but a public hearing is premature,” said Judiciary Chair Sen. Carolyn Bosn. With public protests, employee anxiety, and questions about capacity, Nebraska awaits clarity on WEC’s future as a potential ICE hub.
