NORTH PLATTE, Neb&nbsp; — The Nebraska State Patrol continues the investigation into a murder-suicide that occurred Saturday morning in North Platte.

Early Saturday, the North Platte Police Department and Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the Nebraska State Patrol at the scene of a barricaded subject in North Platte. The subject had told authorities that he had shot and killed his brother inside the home at 1609 West 2nd&nbsp;Street, in North Platte. The subject, identified as James Kemp, 39, was also refusing to allow his 11-year-old son to leave the home.

After several hours of negotiations, Kemp allowed his son to leave the home. The boy was quickly taken into protective care at approximately 9:45 a.m. Soon after the child was released, negotiators heard a gunshot.

Officers and deputies from North Platte PD and Lincoln County quickly entered the home and located the subject deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The subject’s brother, Christopher Kemp, 37, was also located deceased from an apparent gunshot wound.

No officers fired a shot at any point during the incident. Because law enforcement officers were present outside the home at the time of the suicide, the Nebraska State Patrol will conduct a Grand Jury investigation.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — A domestic dispute turned deadly late Thursday night, leaving two brothers dead after an hours-long standoff with law enforcement in North Platte.

According to the North Platte Police Department, officers responded around 11:15 p.m. on July 11 to a residence in the 1600 block of West 2nd Street following a report that one brother had shot and killed the other inside the home they shared.

When officers arrived, the suspect initially came to the door but then shut it and barricaded himself inside. Members of the North Platte Police Department and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office secured the area and began negotiations with the suspect.

Investigators learned that an 11-year-old boy — believed to be the suspect’s son — was also inside the house. Negotiations continued overnight, and the suspect eventually confirmed to law enforcement that his brother was dead and the child was still with him.

Around 9:45 a.m. Friday, the suspect agreed to release the child, who was safely removed from the scene.

Shortly afterward, officers heard what they believed was a gunshot from inside the home. Law enforcement tactically entered and found the 39-year-old suspect dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. His 37-year-old brother was also located inside and appeared to have died from a gunshot wound.

Because the home was under law enforcement control at the time of the suspect’s death, the incident is considered an in-custody death and will be presented to a grand jury, per Nebraska law. The Nebraska State Patrol has taken over the investigation.

LAKE McCONAUGHY, Neb&nbsp; - Anglers are seeing strong success with walleye this week, especially when trolling in 15 to 25 feet of water from Lone Eagle Campground to Sand Point, as well as along the south shore near Kelly Bay. Small Fire Tiger swimbaits have been a reliable lure of choice.

Smallmouth bass fishing has also remained productive, particularly along the rocky points on the south side of the lake and near the face of the dam during daylight hours. Many of the catches reported are of good size.

Water temperatures are holding steady between 68 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

Reminders:
Campfires are currently allowed at Lake McConaughy, but visitors are urged to exercise caution and ensure all fires are well-contained.

As it is peak camping season, all campers are reminded to make reservations in advance.&nbsp;

Lake Mac Report - Strong Walleye Bite, Bass Action Heating Up at Lake Mac (July 11, 2025)

NORTH PLATTE — Kortnei N. Smith, a 2006 graduate of North Platte St. Patrick’s High School and current deputy Lincoln County Attorney, has been appointed as a county court judge in Nebraska’s 11th Judicial District.Gov. Jim Pillen announced the appointment Tuesday. 

Smith was chosen from a group of finalists recommended in early June by a nominating committee composed largely of residents from Lincoln and Dawson counties.Smith has served as a deputy county attorney since 2016, prosecuting felony and misdemeanor cases, as well as juvenile matters and mental health board hearings. Prior to her public service, she worked as an associate attorney at Waite, McWha and Heng in North Platte.Following her graduation from St. Pat’s in 2008 Smith earned a degree in political science from the University of Nebraska-Omaha in 2012. She then attended Creighton University School of Law, receiving her Juris Doctor in 2015.

She will fill the vacancy left by Judge Edward D. Steenburg, who retired after two decades of service and regularly presided over Keith County Court.The 11th Judicial District spans much of southwest and west-central Nebraska, including Lincoln, Keith, Arthur, Chase, Dawson, Dundy, Frontier, Furnas, Gosper, Hayes, Hitchcock, Hooker, Logan, McPherson, Perkins, Red Willow, and Thomas counties.Smith is expected to begin her new judicial role later this year.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Smith, a 2006 graduate of North Platte St. Patrick’s High School and current deputy Lincoln County Attorney, has been appointed as a county court judge in Nebraska’s 11th Judicial District.Gov. Jim Pillen announced the appointment Tuesday. Smith was chosen from a group of finalists recommended in early June by a nominating committee composed largely of residents from Lincoln and Dawson counties.Smith has served as a deputy county attorney since 2016, prosecuting felony and misdemeanor cases, as well as juvenile matters and mental health board hearings. Prior to her public service, she worked as an associate attorney at Waite, McWha and Heng in North Platte.Following her graduation from St. Pat’s in 2008 Smith earned a degree in political science from the University of Nebraska-Omaha in 2012. She then attended Creighton University School of Law, receiving her Juris Doctor in 2015.She will fill the vacancy left by Judge Edward D. Steenburg, who retired after two decades of service and regularly presided over Keith County Court.The 11th Judicial District spans much of southwest and west-central Nebraska, including Lincoln, Keith, Arthur, Chase, Dawson, Dundy, Frontier, Furnas, Gosper, Hayes, Hitchcock, Hooker, Logan, McPherson, Perkins, Red Willow, and Thomas counties.Smith is expected to begin her new judicial role later this year.&nbsp;&nbsp;

OGALLALA, Neb. — The local philanthropy group 100+ Women Who Care Keith County is preparing for its next quarterly giving event, set for Monday, July 14, at the Hayloft Meeting Room upstairs at Front Street Café in Ogallala.

The event, which starts with dinner at 5 p.m. sharp and the meeting to follow at 6 p.m., brings together women across Keith County who pool individual donations to make a collective impact for local nonprofits.

Ahead of the event, members planning to dine must submit their meal selections by Thursday, July 10. Options include a grilled chicken club sandwich with a side, chicken bacon ranch salad, or shrimp Alfredo with garlic bread and salad — each priced at $16.

In an interview on Sandhills Spotlight, group organizer Kerri Anderson emphasized the power of collective giving. “Individually, $100 might not go far, but when we put it together, we’re making a real difference,” she said.

At the last quarterly meeting, the group awarded $10,200 to the Ogallala Tree Board to support local green initiatives. Other recent recipients have included Royal Family KIDS Camp, local senior centers, and youth mentoring programs.

Since its formation in 2019 and first meeting in January 2020, the organization has raised more than $212,000, despite missing two meetings due to COVID disruptions.

The group’s model is simple: each member commits to donating $100 per quarter. At each meeting, three nonprofit organizations — nominated by members — present their cause. Members vote, and the winning nonprofit receives the pooled funds. This quarter's presenters are:

Even nonprofits that don’t win often benefit. Anderson noted that members sometimes choose to contribute additional personal donations to the other presenters. “Some women are moved by a certain cause and will give another $100 out of pocket,” she said.

Anderson encouraged current members to bring a guest to Monday’s meeting, saying, “It’s a great way to grow our group. Once people see the impact, they want to be part of it.”

Women interested in joining or learning more are welcome to attend the meeting portion only, which runs for about an hour. Each presentation lasts 10 minutes, followed by a brief Q&amp;A and voting.

OGALLALA, Neb. — Ogallala City Manager Kevin Wilkins recapped a busy Fourth of July weekend and discussed city updates during Tuesday’s “Sandhills Spotlight” segment on <a href="http://www.z935country.com">Z 93.5 Country</a>, following a brief but productive Ogallala City Council meeting Tuesday evening.

Wilkins highlighted the success of Ogallala’s first-ever Independence Day drone show, which nearly didn’t happen due to unexpected technical difficulties. The drone operators initially struggled to secure a signal for launching the drones, causing a delay of about 40 minutes. The show ultimately went forward thanks to quick action by city staff, Councilman Austin DuPeire, and Brandon Scott from the city’s planning and zoning office — along with Scott’s family — who helped assemble and align the drones.

“We were close to canceling,” Wilkins said. “Councilman DuPeire came through with exactly the equipment we needed. The Scott family helped physically set up the drones — they blink certain colors and have to be aligned due north before they’ll launch.”

The show finally started just after 10:30 p.m. and was synchronized with patriotic music broadcast on Flatrock 100.7 FM. Wilkins called the debut a success but said the city is already reviewing lessons learned.

“I think next year, we’d look at combining a few traditional aerial fireworks with the drones to give the crowd the best of both worlds,” Wilkins said.

Ogallala’s Goodall YMCA outside pool — operating under the “Ogallala Oasis” name — also received praise at the city council meeting. Wilkins said membership is growing, and the Y recently added two new pieces of exercise equipment to the Goodall Recreation Center. The YMCA has also taken over concessions at both the city pool and Western Diamonds Sports Complex.

“The pool is seeing great numbers, and the YMCA is doing a fantastic job managing it,” Wilkins said. “Even with some hiccups, like an old slide pump, things are running smoothly.”

The only other action item during Monday’s council meeting was approval of bid specifications and a bid opening date for street reconstruction on two sections of West Second Street. The city hopes to complete the project before the end of the current fiscal year, with a tentative target of November for completion.

“We want to get it done quickly,” Wilkins noted. “There’s not a lot of underground infrastructure, so it’s primarily surface work — but we are addressing drainage concerns, especially in front of City Hall.”

Wilkins also previewed what’s ahead, including budget planning sessions later this month. He noted complications stemming from new state-level legislation that is making municipal budgeting more complex across Nebraska.

“We’re not alone in facing uncertainty,” Wilkins said. “We’re juggling state requirements, forecasting future growth from the Casino/Resort development, and trying to remain fiscally responsible.”

Speaking of the resort, Wilkins confirmed that hiring is underway for the temporary casino facility, and race day at the new track is now set for August 19 — a few weeks earlier than originally expected.

“The resort’s progress is encouraging, and the city is excited about what it will bring,” Wilkins said. “We’re already seeing interest from people who want to visit, which is exactly what we hoped for.”

The Ogallala City Council’s next regular meeting is scheduled later this month, when budget discussions are expected to intensify.

Ogallala City Council Reviews Fourth Festivities, YMCA Update, and Street Project Plans

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — Authorities are investigating a fatal workplace accident that occurred Saturday afternoon at a concrete business in North Platte.

Emergency responders were called around 1:20 p.m. to Paulsen Inc. Ready Mix, located on Newberry Road near Interstate 80, after a man was discovered unresponsive inside the drum of a cement truck.

The victim was identified as 52-year-old Brian Janssen. According to initial reports, Janssen had been performing maintenance on the truck when the incident happened.

LEXINGTON, Neb. — The Dawson Public Power District board of directors focused on long-range planning and infrastructure investment during its regular July meeting, laying the groundwork for future upgrades and budget development through 2026.

The board reviewed two years of capital work plans to better manage financial planning amid rising equipment costs and extended material lead times. The 2026 plan includes $4.75 million for 23.4 miles of system upgrades, targeting infrastructure with an average age of 47 years. The 2027 plan projects a $6.36 million investment for 32.6 miles of upgrades.

To support these capital projects, the board approved a resolution authorizing the issuance of revenue bonds not to exceed $9.15 million. The bonds would carry a term of up to 20 years, allowing the district to fund long-term infrastructure needs without causing sudden rate increases for customers.

Dawson Public Power Board Reviews Multi-Year Infrastructure Plans, Approves Bond Resolution

COZAD, Neb. — Cozad’s popular Bands, Brews &amp; Barbecue event returns this Saturday, offering a full day of live music, local vendors, and sizzling barbecue in downtown Cozad.

Hosted by the Cozad Chamber of Commerce, the event kicks off at 9 a.m. and runs through midnight, with activities scheduled throughout the day for all ages.

“This event really has it all,” said Chamber Director Jordan Starman. “We’ve got live music, a barbecue cook-off, bounce houses for the kids, and a great variety of vendors. It’s going to be a great day.”

The day begins with vendor booths opening at 9 a.m. in the green space next to the 100th Meridian Museum, offering everything from coffee and baked goods to crafts and baby items. Vendors will remain open until 4 p.m.

At 10 a.m., visitors can view a half-size replica of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the museum. The Sweet Adelines will follow at 11 a.m. with a performance of patriotic music. Free children’s activities, including bounce houses and obstacle courses, will also begin at 11.

The evening’s headline entertainment begins when gates open at 6:30 p.m., with all-you-can-eat barbecue included in the price of admission. Sweetwater takes the stage first, followed by featured performer Tyler Anthony.

The centerpiece of the evening is the barbecue contest, with six local grillers from the Cozad and Gothenburg areas competing for prizes. All competitors receive identical cuts of meat—donated by Tyson and Busy Bones Butchers—and are judged on appearance, flavor, and presentation. Judging begins at 5:30 p.m., and winners will be announced prior to the evening performances. Cash prizes and custom trophies are up for grabs.

Attendees can purchase tickets for $20 in advance through the Cozad Chamber office at 121 West 9th Street or by contacting the chamber directly. Tickets will also be available at the gate on Saturday for $30.

Starman says the weather is expected to cooperate, with a comfortable forecast in the mid-80s.

“It always seems to fall on the hottest day of the year, but this year looks pretty mild,” she said. “We’re ready for a great time.”

July 5 saw a lighter day of emergencies but included an annual community event — the KLFD Sand Volleyball Tournament at Arthur Bay, running from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Later that day, responders assisted a man with a knee injury at the Arthur Bay Boat Ramp at 5:15 p.m.

At 7:35 p.m., a possible injury accident was reported after a driver left a cell phone on the roof of a vehicle, leading to a false 911 report when the phone dropped and auto-triggered an emergency alert.

On July 6, calls continued. At 1:45 a.m., KLFD assisted Keith County EMS with a 46-year-old woman who suffered a head injury after falling while intoxicated at McGinley’s 1 area. That afternoon, at 3:21 p.m., the department again assisted EMS near North Shore Lodge after a man experienced difficulty breathing.

LINCOLN, Neb. — Nebraska Department of Agriculture Director Sherry Vinton on Monday announced the appointment of Jessica Shelburn as the agency’s new deputy director.

Shelburn, a native of Oak, Nebraska, began her role July 7. She brings a background in political strategy, grassroots engagement, and agricultural policy.

“Jessica is a Nebraska native from Oak who has devoted her career to public policy and engagement,” Vinton said in a statement. “Her background in agricultural leadership and her passion for serving rural communities make her a strong addition to our leadership team.”

Shelburn holds a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Leadership, Education and Communication from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. Her experience includes a marketing internship with the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service in Vienna, Austria, and classroom teaching in agriculture and FFA at Newman Grove Public Schools.

Most recently, she served as Director of Grassroots Engagement for the Nebraska Farm Bureau Federation, where she led statewide outreach and helped connect policy leaders with members across the state.

“I have spent most of my life supporting not only Nebraska legislation, but the agricultural industry,” Shelburn said. “The position of deputy director is an exciting opportunity, honor and privilege. I look forward to learning more about what NDA does for Nebraska’s farmers, ranchers and their families and using my background to create new opportunities for the community.”

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — A 23-year-old North Platte man is facing several charges after allegedly injuring a kitten and later attacking a police officer during an attempted arrest.

Jonathan Faubel was charged last week in Lincoln County Court with intentional cruelty to an animal, assaulting a police officer in the third degree, and resisting arrest.

Police were initially called to Casey’s General Store on Rodeo Road around 10 p.m. on July 2 after a disturbance was reported. According to court documents, an employee told officers that Faubel—identified as a former worker at the store—had returned and threatened a current staff member while holding a kitten that appeared to be bleeding from the neck. Faubel reportedly claimed he had slit the animal’s throat.

The next day, officers were dispatched to an apartment complex, also on Rodeo Road, following reports of a man yelling and acting erratically in the parking lot. Officers found two kittens nearby—one of which had a deep laceration to its neck, estimated to be between 2.5 and 3 inches long.

During the encounter, authorities say Faubel struck an officer with a broomstick, knocking a flashlight out of the officer’s hand. As officers attempted to place him under arrest, he resisted, leading to a physical struggle before he was subdued and taken into custody.

Faubel is being held at the Lincoln County Jail on $25,000 bond, with 10% required for release. He is scheduled to appear in court on July 17.

OGALLALA, Neb. — For the first time ever, the skies over Ogallala will light up tonight with a high-tech twist as the city hosts an Independence Weekend drone show in place of its traditional fireworks display.

The event is set to begin around 10 p.m. Mountain Time at the Western Diamond Sports Complex — the longtime launch site for Ogallala’s July 4th celebrations. Weather permitting, the drone display will fill the night sky with colorful formations choreographed to a music soundtrack broadcast on Flatrock 100.7 FM.

The show is produced by Fantasy Drone Shows, a Nebraska-based company from Norfolk that has gained national attention for its dynamic aerial performances. Just last night, the company put on shows in Provo, Utah; St. Louis, Missouri; and Basalt, Colorado as part of Fourth of July festivities. Fantasy Drone Shows also wowed thousands at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln last year with a large-scale drone presentation.

City officials say they are excited to bring this new form of celebration to Ogallala residents and visitors, marking a move toward a more environmentally friendly and pet-safe alternative to fireworks, especially during what has been a dry summer thus far in Keith County.

Spectators, including those camping at Lake McConaughy, are encouraged to arrive early, bring lawn chairs or blankets, and tune in to the radio to enjoy the full experience.
