Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) has been notified of high levels of E. Coli at Lake McConaughy Martin Bay Beach, also known as Lake Mac. This means the water has a higher than usual number of bacteria, and residents should take extra care to not swallow any lake water.

“With the assistance of DHHS, we carefully monitor our lakes weekly during the summer for potential health risks,” explains Melissa Propp, Clinic Manager at SWNPHD. “When a lake has high E Coli levels, we recommend using caution around the water. If you are going to swim, make sure not to swallow water and don’t allow pets to drink the lake water.”

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), swimming during high E Coli levels can cause health issues. Young children should not be in the water at this point in time, since they are more susceptible to complications from E. Coli and other bacterial infections.

Symptoms can include abdominal cramps or pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, fever, and loss of appetite, usually 3 or 4 days after exposure to the water. If you swam and are having these symptoms, contact your medical provider.

“Bacteria levels can change quickly and usually do not last long, depending on the conditions,” stated Propp. “You can check the Beach Watch website which is updated weekly by the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy (NDEE), from May through September.”

OGALLALA, Neb. — After two years of serving up a mix of Indian, Mexican and American favorites, 308 Lounge is preparing to make some big changes this fall.

Owner Parth Patel told The POST earlier this summer that customer demand is driving an expansion of their Indian and Mexican menu offerings. Butter chicken — already the restaurant’s top seller — and a wider range of authentic Indian dishes are expected to take center stage in the coming months.

“People want more Indian food, more Mexican food, and we’re going to offer it,” Patel said. “We use up to 200 different spices from India in our kitchen, and we want to bring flavors people here haven’t tasted before.”

The balance of cuisine has shifted as the restaurant has grown. While 308 Lounge originally leaned more on American staples, today nearly 90 percent of sales come from Indian and Mexican dishes. Some visitors have even started requesting more traditional Indian meals not yet on the menu — a sign, Patel said, that Ogallala and I-80 travelers are eager for something unique.

Along with menu changes, Patel is planning updates to the restaurant’s appearance and branding. He hopes to adjust signage to make clear that 308 Lounge is more than just a bar.

“Right now, people sometimes drive by and think it’s only a lounge,” Patel said. “We want families to know it’s also a restaurant — a place for dinner, sports on TV, and authentic food you can’t find anywhere else in town.”

DoorDash delivery, which the restaurant quietly launched this summer, is another way 308 Lounge is hoping to reach new customers. In Ogallala’s small market, Patel said it makes their food accessible to people who might not realize they have more options than fast food.

Long-term, Patel said he’s open to going even further — possibly transitioning 308 Lounge into a fully Indian restaurant if the community response continues to grow.

“American food, you can get anywhere,” Patel said. “Mexican food, there are other restaurants in town. But if we bring something different — just Indian food, authentic food — that’s something special for Ogallala.”

For now, the changes are expected to roll out gradually this fall, with new menu items, family-friendly branding, and themed décor that leans into Patel’s Indian heritage.

308 Lounge is also notable for being one of only a handful of Indian restaurants in Nebraska — and one of the very few in western Nebraska, where Ogallala is located.

These tours were created to connect students with local businesses and career opportunities while showcasing the wide range of industries available in Keith County. By providing early exposure to career pathways, EXCEL helps students make informed decisions about their post-secondary education while also encouraging them to consider building their future here at home as part of the local workforce.

“For the past six years in my role as Counselor, Ogallala High School has partnered with KCAD to provide our freshman students the opportunity to tour local businesses and learn more about the career opportunities available in Ogallala. About 1 in 8 adults in southwest Nebraska are struggling with their mental health, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This means that they report experiencing poor mental health, defined as having 14 or more days in the past 30 days when their mental health was not good.

“Poor mental health affects not only individuals but also families, workplaces, and entire communities,” said Kay Schmidt, Emergency Response Coordinator. “Suicide Prevention Month is an important reminder that help is available, hope is real, and recovery is possible.”

One of the most critical resources available is the 988 Suicide &amp; Crisis Lifeline. By dialing 988, individuals can connect 24/7 with trained counselors who provide free and confidential support to anyone experiencing thoughts of suicide, a mental health crisis, or substance use struggles.

OGALLALA, Neb. — Mid-Plains Community College’s Ogallala campus is welcoming students this fall with a variety of classes and special programs, including late-start options and unique educational opportunities, college officials said Wednesday.

Jenny Soper, director of the Ogallala campus, said classes are in full swing, but students who missed the traditional August registration still have options. The college is offering 12-week courses beginning Sept. 15, providing a chance for high school students to earn dual credit—college and high school credit simultaneously—at no tuition cost.

“These classes give students a head start on the credits they’ll need for any degree path,” Soper said. “You only have to pay for books, and many courses are fully online now, so there’s flexibility for everyone.”

Among the classes available are English composition, college algebra, American government, and sociology. Soper emphasized the advantage of completing required courses while still in high school.

In addition to core academic offerings, the campus is hosting a conversational Spanish class. The 12-week course, led by an instructor based in Perkins County, meets weekly on Tuesdays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Perkins County High School. Enrollment remains open at $129, including a textbook, despite a pre-registration deadline.

The campus is also providing educational workshops for the wider community. In October, State Trooper Templet will conduct three free classes covering topics such as anti-bullying strategies and recognizing the symptoms of drug and alcohol abuse. Soper said the sessions are designed for parents and community members who want to stay informed about pressing social issues.

“Whether it’s students looking to get ahead in their coursework or parents seeking educational resources, we encourage everyone to reach out,” Soper said. “Our staff is always available, and information is easy to find on our website or by visiting the campus.”

The Ogallala campus continues to highlight opportunities that combine convenience, accessibility, and practical learning experiences for both students and community members.

LINCOLN, Neb. — Nebraska State Troopers arrested 80 impaired drivers during the final weeks of the summer travel season. The traffic stops were part of the nationwide Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign.

The enforcement effort ran from Aug. 16 through Sept. 1, with troopers working overtime to target impaired and dangerous driving behaviors.

“The last few weeks have been filled with high-traffic events across Nebraska, and more are on the way,” said Col. Bryan Waugh, superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “Our troopers remained busy across the state during the final weeks of the summer travel season as well.”

In addition to DUI arrests, troopers issued 1,825 speeding citations and stopped 90 drivers for traveling faster than 100 mph. Other violations included open alcohol container (51), no seat belt (48), improper child restraint (20), minor in possession of alcohol (26), driving under suspension (100), and failure to move over (12).

Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, troopers arrested more than 400 drivers for DUI, stopped 373 drivers exceeding 100 mph and assisted more than 3,500 motorists.

“No matter the season, our troopers remain committed to keeping Nebraska roadways safe,” Waugh said. “We need that same dedication from Nebraska motorists as well.”

SIDNEY, Neb. — On September 2, 2025, at approximately 6:16 PM, the Sidney Police Department was dispatched to a disturbance call on Country Club Drive following a report of shots fired. The caller stated that a man was seen shooting at a woman who had run out of a nearby residence.

Upon arrival, officers located a woman and two juveniles outside the home. They were safely secured while a male suspect was located inside the residence and taken into custody. A BB gun, determined to be the weapon used, was recovered from the scene.

The suspect was arrested and booked into the Cheyenne County Jail without incident. No physical injuries were reported. The Sidney Police Department would like to thank the Cheyenne County Sheriff's Office for their assistance with this call.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — North Platte firefighter Jeremy Condon stepped back into the spotlight for the first time in nearly two decades — and walked away with top honors at the Nebraska State Fair’s Galaxy of the Stars competition.

Condon swept the event, earning the Novas Award, Shining Star Award, Superstar Award, and the Overall Vocal Performance title. That top prize includes a Nashville recording contract valued at $4,500 and a $250 cash award.

For Condon, the moment was both surreal and emotional. He told the audience that his journey back to music only began this summer after encouragement from his fellow firefighters.

“I really did when I got married, I gave music up,” Condon said. “I stopped touring, I stopped playing the gigs, and I just focused on my family and focused on serving my community. And so when this opportunity came, it was my guys kind of daring me to do it.”

His return to performing started at the You Can Be a Star qualifier at the Lincoln County Fair in July, where he won after taking the stage for the first time in 16 or 17 years.

“That’s the first time I’d ever performed on a stage since I’d gotten married,” he said. “This is the first time I’ve performed since then, and so it’s all just kind of a bit overwhelming.”

Condon also used his time on stage to recognize the talent around him, pointing out the dancers, singers, and musicians who shared the competition. “Holy cow, I wasn’t kidding when I said there’s some talent in this room,” he said. “So much talent, so much talent. Thank you very much. I’m absolutely humbled.”

For Condon, who spends his days protecting and serving his community, the awards represent more than a trophy or contract. They mark a return to a passion that had been put on hold for nearly two decades — and a reminder that it’s never too late to follow a dream.

Colonel Bryan Waugh, of NSP, will announce the effort during a media event at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the NSP Troop A office, 4411 S. 108th St. in Omaha. The campaign will feature troopers from across the state, who will take part in events leading up to the delivery of the Huskers’ game ball to Memorial Stadium ahead of Saturday’s home opener against Akron.

The effort is designed to encourage safe travel to and from Lincoln on game days, with reminders for fans to drive sober, buckle up and stay alert on crowded roadways. 

This is also a good reminder that safety extends beyond the stadium and in Lincoln. Whether traveling to the game, gathering with friends or attending a large watch party, state patrol leaders say fans safety should be forefront. 

Nebraska enters Saturday's game following a 20-17 victory over Cincinnati in its season opener Aug. 28 at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. 

The game ball handoff is expected to highlight both statewide teamwork among troopers and the importance of planning ahead so fans can enjoy the game safely.

The game ball will travel across all six NSP troop areas, starting in Omaha and finishing in Lincoln. Fans can follow the game ball’s trip around the state on NSP’s social media pages.

ORLANDO, Fla. — A recent North Platte St. Patrick’s graduate is taking the stage this week at the Miss America’s Teen Competition in Orlando, Florida.

Gabriella Swift, a 2025 graduate, is representing Nebraska at the national event, held at the Walt Disney Theater at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts.

The competition is part of the larger 2026 Miss America and Miss America’s Teen events. Preliminary shows for the teen division began Tuesday, with additional talent preliminaries scheduled for Thursday at 4 p.m. CT. The finals will take place Saturday at 6 p.m. CT.

Miss Nebraska, Makinzie Gregory from Gering is also in Orlando this week competing for the Miss America crown.

The Hot Sheets: August 31, 2025

LEWELLEN, Neb. — Riders will saddle up at Ash Hollow State Historical Park on Sept. 6 for the Velvet Spurs’ annual horseback poker run, a fundraiser for the Friends of Ash Hollow.

The family-friendly event begins at 10 a.m. Mountain Time, with registration at the park’s main entrance. Riders will travel trails through the historic landmark, stopping at stations to collect poker cards. Prizes will be awarded for the top three hands, along with the worst hand.

“It’s very family-friendly. There’s no time event on it, so you don’t have to speed,” said Velvet Spurs President Jean Tobiasson. “You can take your time, enjoy looking at the wildlife and the history up there, and just bring the whole family.”

The event, now in its third year, will feature some newly mapped trails, including a lookout point offering views of Lake McConaughy. The ride is $10 per participant, with entry available the day of the event.

Following the ride, participants are invited to a potluck dinner. The Velvet Spurs will provide sloppy joes and tableware, and riders are asked to bring a salad or dessert.

If inclement weather forces a postponement, the event will be rescheduled for Sept. 20.

Ash Hollow, located at the west end of Lake McConaughy, holds deep historical significance as a Native American buffalo jump site and features preserved cultural landmarks.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — Battle of the Badges returns for the 16th annual event Sept. 10 at Venue 304 in North Platte.&nbsp;

The annual blood drive will take place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. &nbsp;

Donors will cast a vote for Team Red (fire and EMS) or Team Blue (law enforcement). The agency with the most votes will claim bragging rights for the year and be added to a traveling plaque.&nbsp;

The event was first organized in Lincoln County to honor first responders killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Since then, it has grown into a community tradition. In the past 15 years, more than 1,300 units of blood have been donated.&nbsp;

“This is about honoring service while also meeting a real community need,” the Red Cross said. “Every pint of blood donated can help save up to three lives.”&nbsp;

This year's donors will receive a commemorative Battle of the Badges T-shirt or a limited-edition Red Cross PEANUTS mystery T-shirt, along with a meal.&nbsp;

The Red Cross said all blood types are needed to ensure a stable supply for patients. Donors must be at least 17 years old in most states (16 with parental consent, depending on state law), weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be in generally good health. High school students and other donors age 18 and younger must also meet certain height and weight requirements.&nbsp;

To schedule an appointment, donors can use the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit <a href="http://redcrossblood.org/" target="_blank">RedCrossBlood.org</a> or call 1-800-RED CROSS. Donors are asked to enter sponsor code “NPbattleofbadges” to register for the event. RapidPass, an online tool available at <a href="http://redcrossblood.org/RapidPass" target="_blank">RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass</a>, can also be used to complete pre-donation reading and health history questions to save time on donation day.&nbsp;

Vehicles, tools, a trailer, office furniture, HVAC units, a grand piano, welders, kayaks and shelving are among the many items that will be sold via online auction.

Items can be viewed on the Isabell Auction Service website at&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.isabellauction.com/auctions/10263-npcc-online-surplus-auction">isabellauction.com</a>&nbsp;or in person from noon to 4 p.m. Sept. 9 at the NPCC North Campus,1101 Halligan Drive, North Platte. Lots will begin closing at 1:00 p.m. Sept. 10. Any schedule changes will also be posted on the Isabell website.

Purchased items can be picked up between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Sept. 11 at the NPCC North Campus. Signs will be posted on campus to direct buyers to the appropriate location.

KEARNEY, Neb.&nbsp;— A small plane crash claims two lives northeast of Kearney late Wednesday.&nbsp;

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said it lost contact with the aircraft about 9:30 p.m. as the plane was headed toward Kearney Regional Airport. Its last recorded position placed it several miles north of the runway.&nbsp;

Search teams from multiple agencies scoured the area overnight using drones, patrol vehicles and utility terrain vehicles (UTV’s). Heavy fog forced crews to pause the operation in the early morning hours at 2 a.m. before resuming at daybreak. The wreckage was located around 10 a.m. Thursday.&nbsp;

Both the pilot and passenger died at the crash site.&nbsp;The victims are Dr. Mark H. Meyer, 77, and Kent O. Magnuson, 72, both residents of rural Kearney, Nebraska.

Flight data indicated the plane departed from an airfield near Terrace, Minnesota, on Wednesday evening around 7 p.m. &nbsp;

LINCOLN, Neb. — Nebraska drivers will face higher penalties for speeding beginning Sept. 3, under a new law aimed at curbing a surge in extreme speeding across the state.

The measure, LB530, raises fines for speeding violations and authorizes the Nebraska Department of Transportation to impose temporary, reduced speed limits on interstates such as I-80 during poor weather, emergencies or traffic congestion.

Under the new law, fines will increase as follows:
— 1–5 mph over the limit: $50 (up from $10)
— 6–9 mph over: $75 (up from $25)
— 10–14 mph over: $125 (up from $75)
— 15–19 mph over: $200 (up from $125)
— 20–34 mph over: $300 (up from $200)
— 35 mph or more over: $400 (up from $300)

The law also classifies driving at more than twice the posted speed limit as reckless driving, which carries additional penalties.
