&nbsp;Lincoln, Neb. —&nbsp;The University of Nebraska has announced two new leadership appointments at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in Curtis.Kelly Bruns, current director of the West Central Research, Extension and Education Center in North Platte, has been named interim dean of NCTA and Interim director of partnership engagement in the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.Joining him in leadership is Jennifer McConville, who has been reappointed as NCTA associate dean of academic innovation, learner success, and career pathways. 

McConville will also hold an interim courtesy appointment in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, where she will work to leverage partnership opportunities between NCTA and CASNR.“These appointments represent a key step in realizing a shared vision for agricultural workforce education in Nebraska,” said Mike Boehm, University of Nebraska vice president and Harlan Vice Chancellor for UNL’s Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources. “Dr. Bruns is a trusted leader with a deep understanding of Nebraska’s ag ecosystem. The leadership transition comes as Dean Larry Gossen prepares to retire in June 2025. Since 2020, Gossen has led NCTA through a period campus revitalization and commitment to workforce development. Under his leadership, the college completed major infrastructure repairs, deepened community ties, and expanded continuing education—highlighted by the launch of a USDA-funded meat processing curriculum and a $6 million gift to renovate NCTA’s historic barn into a student success and activity center.Bruns has served as director of WCREEC since 2016 and is nationally recognized for his expertise in beef cattle management. He taught for 20 years at the college level before joining UNL in 2014. 

Interim leadership for WCREEC will be announced soon.These leadership appointments support a broader strategic realignment between NCTA and CASNR announced in late 2024. Edward Dunn of Grant has been appointed to the Nebraska Aeronautics Commission, where he will help oversee the state’s aviation policies and infrastructure development.

Sidney resident Steve Mattoon has been named to the Nebraska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, which regulates the exploration and production of oil and natural gas to ensure responsible resource development and environmental protection.

The sale offers an array of artificial memorial flowers available for a free-will donation, with proceeds directly supporting Kiwanis community service efforts.

The initiative is especially unique because it is both sustainable and sentimental. The flowers sold are collected from local cemeteries after the Memorial Day period each year, then cleaned, sorted, and offered back to the community the following May. For those unable to visit the cemetery themselves, the Kiwanis Club also offers a placement service—delivering and placing flowers at selected gravesites in Ogallala in exchange for a donation.

“This project has really come full circle,” said Club President Susan McBride Krab. “It honors the memory of loved ones while continuing to give back to our town in meaningful ways.”

Ogallala, NE — In an effort to restore and expand the city’s urban forest, the Ogallala Tree Board has launched a community-wide tree planting reimbursement program, with a long-term goal of doubling Ogallala’s tree canopy over the next decade.

“The Ogallala Tree Board has a goal that over the next 10 years we want to double the canopy in Ogallala,” said Drew Krab, a member of the board. “Historically Ogallala has had a great community forest, and we're trying to build that back.”

The reimbursement program is open to all Ogallala residents and aims to encourage the planting of large, healthy trees across neighborhoods and commercial corridors alike. Krab emphasized that the program is designed to be inclusive and equitable. “We open it up to everyone,” he said. “All of our neighborhoods could stand to have more trees.”

The board has about $5,000 in available funds for the program this year and operates on a first-come, first-served basis. The reimbursement is for the lesser of the cost of the tree or $150. To qualify, residents must plant a tree with a minimum trunk caliper of half an inch—roughly six feet tall or more. The application process involves submitting a simple flyer-style form along with a receipt. The tree board then verifies that the tree has been planted before submitting the reimbursement request to the city.

Applications are available at the city offices and at Adams Bank &amp; Trust, where Krab works. “The application is really a flyer,” he explained. “On one side it talks about the program and why we want to do it, and the backside is the actual application with just a few requirements.”

Beyond encouraging new growth, the board is also contending with aging trees—many over 100 years old—that have reached the end of their life cycle and pose safety concerns. “We’ve been trying to find as much money as we can to help with tree removal,” Krab noted. “Unfortunately, these older trees become a danger to the public.”

To date, the Tree Board has focused planting efforts along Ogallala’s main thoroughfares, such as Highway 30 and the city’s one-way streets. “When you see trees there, there’s a decent chance that the Tree Board facilitated that,” Krab said.

The program also receives funding through local donations and initiatives like the Big Give, and Krab said community support is vital to keeping it going.

Officials are reminding the public to be cautious around wild or unfamiliar animals, especially as warmer weather increases outdoor activity for both people and wildlife.

“Animals are out and about now that the weather is warmer, and animal moms may be very protective of new babies,” said Melissa Propp, RN, Clinic Manager at SWNPHD. “If you see a wild animal or an animal you don’t know, give it plenty of space and admire it from a distance. This helps keep you and the animal safe.”

Skunks are among the most common carriers of rabies in southwest Nebraska. Rabies is a fast-moving, deadly disease that affects the nervous system of mammals, including humans. It is typically spread through the saliva of an infected animal, most often via bites.

SWNPHD urges the public to be on the lookout for animals showing unusual or aggressive behavior. Signs of rabies in animals may include:

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) emphasizes that rabies is a medical emergency. Anyone who may have been exposed should immediately wash the area with soap and water and seek medical care. Quick action is critical, as rabies is nearly always fatal once symptoms appear.

To protect against rabies, SWNPHD strongly encourages pet and livestock owners to keep animals up to date on rabies vaccinations. “Vaccination is the best way to prevent rabies exposure,” added Propp.

May is Mental Health Month: SWNPHD Encourages Self-Care with Help from CredibleMind

Ogallala, NE – A new cultural chapter begins in Ogallala today as the city unveils its first-ever Western Trails Sculpture Walk, launching with a special kick-off celebration on Monday, May 5 at 5:00 PM.

Hosted in the heart of the community at Eccentric Lamb Fiber Arts (111 N Spruce Street), the event promises an engaging and artistic start to what organizers hope becomes a tourist destination. Guests can meet several of the sculpture artists behind the exhibit and participate in a ribbon-cutting ceremony just outside the newly revitalized pocket park alleyway.

Following the ceremony, attendees are invited to take a self-guided tour through Ogallala’s Western Trails Creative District, where a collection of outdoor sculptures will now reside for the next year. Each installation features a QR code linking to AutoCast, a mobile platform offering in-depth insights into the sculptures and their creators.

The celebration continues at Second Chapter Brewing (203 W A Street) starting around 6:00 PM, where guests can enjoy live music by Skipping Stones, a Cinco de Mayo-themed taco bar, and further conversation with participating artists. The entire event is free and open to the public.

“This is the first year of our sculpture walk, and we’re excited to be joining five other Nebraska communities as part of SWAN—Sculpture Walk Across Nebraska,” said Molly Jeffres of Keith County Area Development (KCAD). “It’s definitely a labor of love, but it’s also part of a bigger plan for Ogallala’s downtown.”

Ogallala became a certified Western Trails Creative District in 2023, making it eligible for significant arts funding. In April, the district received a $100,000 development grant from the Nebraska Arts Council, a major step toward realizing a 10-year vision for the area. The sculpture walk is the district’s first signature project, with more planned for 2026 and 2027.

Jeffres encourages community members to get involved. “If anyone wants to be a part of the creative district’s efforts, reach out to KCAD. We’d love to include more voices as we continue shaping the future of downtown Ogallala.”

The Western Trails Sculpture Walk is made possible through collaboration between KCAD, the Ogallala SWAN Committee, the Ogallala Regional Arts Council (ORAC), and other valued community partners.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) — With just 47 days until Nebraskaland Days kicks off in North Platte, the community is gearing up for its annual celebration of western heritage and summer fun.

Bob Lantis, Executive Director of Nebraskaland Days, spoke with the POST Friday about preparations for the June festival, which begins later than usual this year due to the calendar layout.

“It’s kind of a weird year because we’ve got all these weeks in May and then the festival starts as late as it possibly can,” said Lantis. “That’s a complete opposite from last year, which was as early as it could’ve been.”

As part of the lead-up to the festivities, today marks the first “Dress Western Friday” of the season, a weekly tradition throughout May that encourages locals to sport their western attire in support of the celebration. It’s also “Flyer Day,” with members of the Nebraskaland Days board of directors fanning out across North Platte to distribute this year’s brochures to local businesses.

Lantis said that while final preparations are still underway, everything is on track.

“It’s amazing. It just gets more crazy as we get closer,” he said. “Right now, it’s all about execution work—final touches, mowing the grass, getting the arena ready for the rodeo. We’re on schedule. I feel good about where we’re at, and we’re excited to have a celebration in just a little over a month.”

Nebraskaland Days officially opens on June 18, kicking off with four nights of the Buffalo Bill Rodeo, a highlight of the festival. Lantis said organizers are particularly excited about this year’s rodeo enhancements.

“We’ve added some money for the Cowboys, so that should help draw more of them—better Cowboys, better stock in the arena. We’re really excited about the rodeo this year.”

The celebration wraps up with two nights of the Viaero Wireless Summer Jam Concert Series. Country star Luke Bryan, joined by Ashley Cooke and Baker Blankenship, headlines Friday, June 27, while rising star Bailey Zimmerman, along with Cooper Alan and Angie K, takes the stage Saturday, June 28.

Nebraskaland Days Countdown Begins in North Platte with “Dress Western Friday” and Flyer Day

LAKE McCONAUGHY, Neb. — Dust off those rods, untangle the tackle box, and stock up on leeches — fishing season is about to fire up at Lake McConaughy.

With water temperatures holding steady at 50°F near the dam, early May marks the beginning of peak action for walleye anglers. Fish are on the move post-spawn, and seasoned locals know this is the time to strike — especially around the Sand Creek and Otter Creek points, where the walleye tend to migrate.

Whether you're trolling sinkers, spinning rigs, or keeping it classic with a hook and crawler in 15 to 25 feet of water, chances are you'll find success. Just don’t forget your snacks — and maybe a lawn chair for those slower moments.

Currently, the lake is sitting at 61.6% capacity (3,239.4 feet, or roughly 1,073,600 acre-feet of water). Docks open for action include Divers Bay, Martin Bay low water, Lemoyne, Cedar View, and both north and south ramps at Lake Ogallala.

Planning to make a weekend of it? A friendly reminder: starting May 20 through Sept. 10, camping at both Lake McConaughy and Lake Ogallala State Recreation Areas requires an advance reservation. You can book beach spots 30 days out and campgrounds up to 180 days in advance. LEMOYNE, Neb. — The Keystone Lemoyne Fire Department will hold its annual roast beef feed on Sunday, May 4, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The event, a local favorite, will feature a home-style meal of tender roast beef, mashed potatoes with gravy, green beans, and dinner rolls. A selection of desserts, including brownies, cakes and pies, will also be served.

Free-will donations will be accepted during the event, with all proceeds going toward critical upgrades to the department’s command truck and rope rescue equipment.

“We’re excited to welcome the community for another great meal and a great cause,” the department said in a statement. “Your support helps us stay ready to serve.”

LINCOLN, NEB. – Despite a $2 billion decline from 2022, Nebraska’s agricultural exports totaled $7.9 billion in 2023, marking the third-highest export year on record. That’s according to a Nebraska Farm Bureau’s annual&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nefb.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/NEAgriculture-InternationalTrade_2023_Proof2.pdf" target="_blank">Agriculture and International Trade Report</a>&nbsp;released today.

The report, prepared by economist Jay Rempe of Rolling Prairie Economics, provides a comprehensive look at how global markets are driving and challenging the economic future of Nebraska’s farm and ranch families. According to the report, trade remains a foundational pillar of Nebraska’s agriculture-driven economy.

“Our state ranks fifth in the nation for agricultural exports, and we lead the country in beef exports. Yet, the story behind the numbers is about the Nebraska farm families whose livelihoods depend on access to global markets,” said Mark McHargue, president of Nebraska Farm Bureau. “When trade thrives, Nebraska thrives. That’s why it’s critical that we push for new trade agreements and work to eliminate barriers that unfairly limit our access to overseas markets.”

The report, released annually since 2017, examines the most recent data provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), sourced from the year 2023 and includes county-level estimates showing the importance of trade at the grassroots level. Cuming and Platte Counties led the state in total agricultural export value, each exceeding $200 million, while Phelps County topped the list for per-farm export value at an estimated $474,832. Counties like Kearney, Fillmore, and Boone also ranked among the highest per-farm export values, a reflection of the size, productivity, and diversity of their farming operations.

“Trade translates directly to income for farm and ranch families,” said Rempe. “Whether it's corn from Dawson County, soybeans from York County, or beef from the Sandhills, the ability to sell these products overseas can make the difference between a good year and a tough one for many Nebraska producers.”

According to the report, soybeans, corn, and beef remained solidly entrenched as Nebraska’s top agricultural exports, accounting for nearly two-thirds of total exports. Nebraska ranked first in the nation for beef exports at $1.59 billion. The state ranked third in corn exports and seventh in soybeans. Exports of pork and soybean meal were among the few that increased in value, rising 3% and 12%, respectively.

While commodity prices and increased global competition from countries like Brazil contributed to export declines, Nebraska producers remain competitive and resilient. However, trade uncertainty and tariffs continue to pose significant challenges.

Floyd’s Truck Center Acquires Nebraska Truck Center

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — Sculptor Vic Rouleau has been awarded the People’s Choice Award and a $500 prize for his piece “Learning to Fly” during this year’s Sculpture Walk Around Nebraska (SWAN), hosted by the Prairie Arts Center and sponsored by NebraskaLand Bank.

The sculpture, which depicts three Sandhill Cranes taking flight from cattails, won by a landslide in online voting. Created entirely from recycled materials, the piece reflects Rouleau’s rural surroundings and love of nature.

“I live out in the country, and the cranes are out in the field all the time,” Rouleau said. “Watching the mother and little ones grow up is pretty cool, and that’s what inspired me.”

This is the second year that the Prairie Arts Center has participated in SWAN, placing sculptures in North Platte’s Canteen District to create an open-air gallery. The initiative also features works in Norfolk, Valentine, Columbus, Grand Island, and — beginning this year — Ogallala.

Ogallala’s Western Trails Sculpture District will hold its grand opening on Monday, May 5, at 5 p.m. at Eccentric Lamb Fiber Arts, 111 N. Spruce St. The event will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a chance to meet several featured artists.

“We were very fortunate to have NebraskaLand Bank sponsor the award this year,” said Prairie Arts Center Director Holly Carlini. “Vic was very touched. You can see the emotion and effort that goes into these pieces — it’s really special.”

Chantel Burch, marketing coordinator for NebraskaLand Bank, said supporting the arts strengthens community ties. “We are beyond excited to recognize an artist whose work resonated with so many people.”

Rouleau’s sculpture will remain on display at the Prairie Arts Center for the next year. The center plans to grow next year’s SWAN exhibition by featuring seven sculptures throughout North Platte.
