The basics of raising backyard chickens will be explained through a new class offered by the Mid-Plains Community College Business and Community Education department.

Rebecca Wrage will teach “Chicken Scratch” from 6-8 p.m. April 11 in Room 209 in the W. W. Wood Building on the college’s North Campus, 1101 Halligan Drive, in North Platte. The fee is $10.

Whether or not chickens are legal to have in a particular neighborhood, the supplies needed to get started and how to determine the size of a chicken coop are just some of the many topics that will be discussed.

(North Platte, Nebraska, March 5, 2024) – Now in its 15th year, the Nebraska Passport Program continues to be a popular way to invite visitors to explore Nebraska’s unique tourist destinations. 70 places have been chosen as Passport stops throughout the state after going through an application process. This year, two of the stops are in Lincoln County. Being a passport stop will benefit, not only the selected business, but the entire community as the visitors come for the Passport Program and stay to experience the entire community.&nbsp;

The first Lincoln County stop is CR Rustic Antique Mall. CR Rustic is located in the Historical Canteen District&nbsp; and opened in August of 2020. At CR Rustic, they have a large range of products including antiques,&nbsp; refurbished goods, candles, paint, crafts, fresh flowers, and boutique items. With over 20 vendors, there is a&nbsp; great selection of custom-made products. CR Rustic is open Tuesday-Friday from 10:30am-6:00pm and on&nbsp; Saturdays from 11:30am-6:00pm. They are located at 108 E 5th St, North Platte.&nbsp;

The second stop in our area is Feather River Vineyard. Located in the hills of the Southern Platte Valley, just&nbsp; south of North Platte, Feather River has been offering a variety of wines that reflect the character and history&nbsp; of the area’s geologic heritage since 2007. River and windblown sediment have created the mineral-rich soil of&nbsp; the region that nurtures vines that produce grapes of a distinctive quality. Feather River is one of Nebraska's&nbsp; largest vineyards and planted their first vines in 2001. The 37-acre vineyard includes a bevy of grape varieties&nbsp; including Edelwiess, Seyval, Reisling, LaCrosse, St Pipen, Marechal Foch, Frontanec, St. Croix, and Marguette. Feather River Vineyard will be open daily during the Passport program from 1:00pm-6:00pm, and until 8:00pm&nbsp; on Fridays. They are located at 5700 SE State Farm Rd, North Platte.&nbsp;

The 2023 Nebraska Passport had 1,014 participants visit all 70 stops. In 2019, the Passport program generated $23.7 million in traveler spending. The 2024 Nebraska Passport program will run from May 1st through September 30th, 2024. At each Passport stop participants visit they will receive a stamp, either in a Nebraska Passport booklet or a digital stamp on the Nebraska Passport app. Participants then turn in their stamps and receive prizes. 2024 Nebraska Passport booklets are available for pre-order at NebraskaPassport.com or you can download the app starting May 1, 2024, by searching for “Nebraska Passport 2024” in your app store for both iPhones and Androids. Vontz Paving, Inc. of Hastings is the contractor for this project. Work includes bridge repair, asphalt pavement overlay, earth shoulder construction and seeding.

 Traffic will be maintained with temporary traffic signals, lane restrictions, flagging and pilot car. A 12-foot width restriction will be in effect. Anticipated completion is Oct. 2024.

The purpose of this project is to preserve the transportation asset, improve the reliability of the transportation system and perpetuate the mobility of the traveling public.

United States Attorney Susan Lehr announced that David Murcia-Retana, 21, of Lexington, Nebraska, was sentenced on February 27, 2024, in federal court in Lincoln, Nebraska, for distribution of five grams or more of methamphetamine. Senior United States District Judge John M. Gerrard sentenced Murcia-Retana to 60- months’ imprisonment. There is no parole in the federal system. After Murcia-Retana release from prison, he will begin a 4-year term of supervised release.

On May 25, 2021, in Lexington, law enforcement agents executed a controlled buy of meth from Murcia-Retana. A confidential informant (“the CI”) met with Murcia-Retana at a location in Lexington and provided Murcia-Retana with $1,200 in exchange for meth.&nbsp; The CI then provided the meth to the agents.&nbsp; The meth was laboratory tested and confirmed to be approximately 45 grams of actual meth.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

This case was investigated by&nbsp;the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

(North Platte, Neb.) — Weather permitting, work will resume on Jeffers Street, between the Philip Street intersection and First Street, including the closure of Philip Street west of Jeffers Street, beginning Monday, March 11, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation.

The west leg of the Jeffers and Philip Street intersection will be closed for both eastbound and westbound traffic. Philip Street will be open between Dewey and Jeffers. Motorists are advised to utilize alternate routes during the closure. The intersection closure is expected to be in place for approximately two (2) weeks.&nbsp;

Paulsen, Inc. of Cozad is the contractor for this project. Work includes reconstructing the pavement, including sidewalks and driveways, as well as a new storm sewer system, street lighting, and traffic signals. Traffic will be maintained with lane restrictions on Jeffers Street, and intermittent side street closures. A 10-foot width restriction will be in effect. Anticipated completion is Aug. 2024.

(Lincoln, Neb.) — Today, the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) announced the Good Life, Great Journey Scholarship Program, a new scholarship for individuals pursuing two-year technical degrees in critical fields. 

The Good Life, Great Journey Scholarship Program allows NDOT to invest in future generations of Nebraskans by providing competitive and practical options for long-term career success that also supports the state’s transportation system. This scholarship program will provide recipients the necessary financial resources to fund their education while also giving them the opportunity to gain real world experience by interning at an NDOT facility. 

Those pursuing information technology, diesel technology, electronic systems/electrical technology, land surveying/GIS/civil engineering technology, drafting/design technology programs are eligible to apply for the program. Engineering programs with a transfer to a bachelor’s degree program will also be eligible. 

Eligible expenses for selected individuals include tuition, books, fees, housing and equipment. Additionally, successful candidates will work in a paid NDOT internship and will be eligible to be reimbursed for travel mileage between their residence and their designated NDOT internship location. Upon completion of the program, there will be an opportunity for full-time employment with NDOT.

This scholarship is open to anyone pursuing or interested in pursuing one of the approved programs, including graduating high school seniors, currently enrolled college students, current NDOT employees and the public.

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) encourages residents to get recommended cancer screenings to save lives. Cancer is the second most common cause of death in southwest Nebraska and in the US, exceeded only by heart disease. It is estimated that there will be a little over 2 million new diagnosed cancer cases in the US in 2024. Excluding non-melanoma skin cancer, at least 42% of those cases are potentially avoidable. 

That is a substantial portion of cancers that could be prevented by making healthy choices like eating right, staying active, and not smoking. It is also important to follow recommended screening guidelines, which can help detect certain cancers early.

Below is a list of the different types of cancer screenings available and the recommended age for each one. These cancer screening guidelines are for people with an average risk for certain cancers. It is a good idea to talk to your doctor about which tests you might need and when you will need them.

Cervical Cancer Screening:&nbsp;The goal of this screening is to find precancerous cervical cell changes when treatment can prevent cervical cancer from developing. It is done through either an HPV test or a pap test. The HPV test checks cells for an HPV infection, while a pap test collects cervical cells for testing. It is recommended that cervical screenings begin at age 21.

Breast Cancer Screening:&nbsp;These screenings are done to check the breast for cancer before there are signs or symptoms. There are several types of breast screenings beginning with breast self-exams. Being familiar with the look and feel of your own breasts can help you notice any lumps, pain, or change in size that may be of concern. Mammograms are a type of x-ray of the breast and are usually the best way to find breast cancer early. Breast MRIs are used along with mammograms to screen women who are at high risk.&nbsp; It is recommended that women who are 50-74 yrs old and at average risk, get a mammogram every two years. Women in their 40’s should talk to their doctor about when and how often to get screened.

Colorectal Cancer Screening:&nbsp;Anyone at average risk for colon cancer should begin colorectal screening at age 45 and follow regular interval screening through the age of 74. There are many different types of colorectal screenings. The two most common are colonoscopies and stool tests. A colonoscopy is a medical procedure that allows your doctor to view your entire colon and rectum for any precancerous polyps. The stool test is done at home by collecting a small sample of stool and sending it in to a lab to look for small amounts of blood and/or DNA markers associated with colorectal cancer.

Prostate Cancer Screening:&nbsp;There are two tests that are commonly used to screen for prostate cancer. The first is a blood test called prostate specific antigen (PSA) that measures the level of PSA in the blood. The other is a digital rectal examination (DRE). This is used to check for any abnormalities on the prostate. Men who are 55 to 69 years old, and at average risk, should talk to their doctor about if and when to get prostate cancer screening done.

Lung Cancer Screening:&nbsp;The only recommended screening for lung cancer is a low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) scan. It is a pain free, relatively short CT scan of your lungs.&nbsp; Anyone ages 50-80 years old that has a 20-year or more smoking history and smoke now or have quit within the past 15 years should have a lung cancer screening done yearly.

Cancer Prevention Screenings

The North Platte Police Department, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, and Gothenburg Police Department have taken an extraordinary leap forward in safeguarding its most vulnerable residents in North Platte and the surrounding area.&nbsp; We are proud to announce the implementation of Project Lifesaver, a public initiative to protect and locate individuals with cognitive disorders who may wander from home.

Project Lifesaver is a community-based, public safety, non-profit organization that provides law enforcement and caregivers with a program designed to protect and locate at-risk members of the community such as those with Autism, Down syndrome, or Alzheimer’s.&nbsp; Project Lifesaver is inexpensive and gives peace of mind to families of those identified with a cognitive condition where no other steps can be taken to prevent wandering.

Project Lifesaver works through proven technology and specially trained law enforcement officers.&nbsp; Citizens enrolled in the program are outfitted with a radio frequency transmitter to be worn on the wrist or ankle. If an enrolled client goes missing, the caregiver will notify the North Platte Police Department, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, or Gothenburg Police Department and a Project Lifesaver team will deploy with a specialized receiver to help locate the person greatly reducing search time, manpower, and cost.

Community members in North Platte, Lincoln County, and Gothenburg can contact their local law enforcement agency for additional information on qualification and potential enrollment into the Project Lifesaver program.

NPPD, Lincoln Co. Sheriff's Office and Gothenburg PD announce the implementation of Project Lifesaver

LINCOLN, NE –&nbsp;Today, Governor Jim Pillen vetoed LB 307 which proposes the creation of Syringe Service Programs (SSPs) in local jurisdictions. Such programs would allow for the distribution of hypodermic needles to drug users. The bill also creates an exception from prosecution for those service providers authorized to distribute the needles.&nbsp; It was introduced by Senator Megan Hunt of Omaha and was passed by the Legislature on a vote of 30-7-12.&nbsp;

“This legislation is problematic for several reasons. As written, it exposes our kids to increased dangers, by allowing them to participate in needle exchange programs and does nothing to enhance the safety of our communities,” said Gov. Pillen. “There is also evidence that these programs lead to enhanced drug use and does not result in significant reductions in the transmission of communicable diseases.”

Gov. Pillen stands with commonsense Nebraskans who oppose their government facilitating dehumanizing illegal drug use.

Gov. Pillen Vetoes Bill Creating Government-Supported Free Needle Exchange Program for Drug Users

KEARNEY – The University of Nebraska at Kearney is once again welcoming a record-breaking group of students into its signature health science program.

A total of 72 high school seniors were recently accepted into the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.unk.edu/academics/health_sciences/scholarshipprograms.php">Kearney Health Opportunities Program</a>&nbsp;(KHOP) for Fall 2024. These students come from communities across the state – Bridgeport to Norfolk to Hebron – and represent the future of rural health care in Nebraska.

This year’s class is the program’s largest-ever, surpassing the 56 students admitted in 2023.

“It’s very promising and exciting to have such a highly talented group of students who are dedicated to practicing health care in rural Nebraska,” said Peggy Abels, director of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.unk.edu/academics/health_sciences/index.php">UNK Health Sciences</a>. “The KHOP program is an important part of the rural health initiatives on the UNK campus that are designed to alleviate the health care workforce shortages in our state. We look forward to working with these future Lopers as they prepare to serve their communities as health care professionals.”

A partnership between UNK and the University of Nebraska Medical Center, KHOP was launched in 2010 as a pipeline program designed to grow the state’s health care workforce by recruiting and training students from rural Nebraska who are committed to practicing in these communities as professionals. The program offers financial assistance, academic support and professional development opportunities, with many participants receiving full-tuition scholarships to attend UNK and guaranteed admission to UNMC.

KHOP members can study in the fields of dental hygiene, dentistry, medical laboratory science, medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, pharmacy, physical therapy, physician assistant and radiography.

Participants also receive a $3,000 room waiver through the KHOP Learning Community. A requirement for freshmen, the one-year residential learning community gives students a chance to explore various health care careers while receiving support and guidance as they transition to college. KHOP members meet with health care providers and tour medical facilities throughout the region, better preparing them for professional school and beyond.

UNK accepts 72 students into Kearney Health Opportunities Program – the largest class ever

LINCOLN, NE.&nbsp;– Governor Jim Pillen has announced a new scholarship program for Nebraska students aimed at growing the number of veterinarians serving livestock producers across the state.&nbsp; The&nbsp;Nebraska Elite 11 Veterinarian Program&nbsp;provides financial support to Nebraska students pursuing degrees in animal science or veterinary science at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s (UNL) College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR). Today, is the first day that applications are being accepted for the first cohort of students.

“The need for production animal veterinarians is undeniable. It’s an issue for Nebraska and other state’s as well,” said Gov. Pillen. “Through this collaboration with UNL, Nebraska will be a leader in boosting the number of graduates in this field.”

UNL Chancellor Rodney Bennett voiced strong support for the program, which he said will help the university meet two key goals.

“The&nbsp;Nebraska Elite 11 Veterinarian Program&nbsp;aligns with two key aims of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln -- first, to attract, retain, and graduate Nebraska’s best and brightest students; and second, to contribute to resolving pressing issues within the state of Nebraska,” said Bennett. “The University appreciates Gov. Pillen’s leadership and the state’s support of this program that will impact not only UNL but all Nebraskans who benefit from veterinary services.”

Nebraska’s livestock industry contributes more than $6 billion annually to the state’s economy – an impact that is especially significant in rural counties and communities. Veterinarians play a critical role in keeping livestock healthy, improving herd health, and responding to disease and public health issues, among many other services, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Access to high-quality veterinary care improves profitability for livestock producers and contributes to peace of mind for producers when their animals need care.

But Nebraska and other states across the country are facing a steep shortage of food animal veterinarians. One reason for this is the cost of veterinary training, according to the USDA. The Elite 11 Program removes the barrier of cost for Nebraska students interested in food animal veterinary medicine.

Dr. Larry Marshall has been a vet in Bertrand for nearly 40 years. He says students tend to return to their home communities to practice, which is both a benefit and a hindrance when it comes to recruiting food animal veterinarians, especially if that hometown is in another state.&nbsp;

“The point is that my plight in trying to find an associate is shared up and down areas of rural Nebraska with other veterinarians. This is a plan that I think is going to get to the root of the problem and it’s going to help solve that problem,” shared Marshall. “Our goal is to find, cultivate, educate, mentor and lead these students down a path that will let them be successful food animal veterinarians in rural Nebraska.”

Up to 25 first-time freshmen will receive the Nebraska Aspiring Animal Production Veterinarians Program Scholarship, which covers 50% of their tuition for the first two years of their study in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

After the second year, up to 13 of the original 25 scholarship recipients will be awarded a continuation scholarship, which covers 100% of tuition for their third and fourth years of study at UNL. Ultimately, 11 students will be selected as part of the Elite 11. Those students will receive 100% of tuition and fees for UNL’s professional program in veterinary medicine, in which students complete the first two years of veterinary school at UNL, followed by two more years of schooling at the Iowa State College of Veterinary Medicine. Students selected into the program will also receive mentoring and professional development throughout their studies.

“This program presents an incredible opportunity for Nebraska high school students who are passionate about agriculture and animal care to pursue careers in veterinary medicine without the burden of student loan debt,” said Tiffany Heng-Moss, dean of UNL’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. “This is an important program that will have a big impact on our state, our agriculture industry, and on the students who take part in it. I’m grateful to Gov. Pillen and the state of Nebraska for making this possible.”

“Based on my own experience, I know how academically demanding it is to pursue a degree in veterinary medicine. It’s becoming even harder to find students who are interested in large animal care,” said Gov. Pillen. “This program aims to close that gap and produce experts in the field who can ably work with farmers and ranchers and continue to ensure Nebraska’s place in providing quality food products across the globe.”

Graduates of the Elite 11 Program are required to stay in Nebraska and practice as a production-animal veterinarian for eight years. Application instructions for the first cohort of the program are now available at casnr.unl.edu/elite11. Applications will be accepted through April 12. Scholarship recipients will be notified in late May.

Fire managers have made significant progress the past 24 hours. Containment has increased from 82% to 98%. Firefighters are currently monitoring weather forecasts for the next 48 hours. Portions of the fire are currently under Red Flag warnings. Projected forecasts through the weekend call for contribution of fire weather that may impact the fire footprint. Uncontained areas of the fire are pockets of heavy fuels and trees that still have the potential to ignite and throw hot embers across the fire line.

Yesterdays operations included increasing containment in heavy pockets of timber that pose risks to the fire's edge. Wednesday, an extensive infrared flight provided detailed areas of isolated and significant heat. Some areas in timber pockets pose safety hazards to firefighters, which limits them from suppression efforts. If these areas do not pose any risk for the fire to escape the line, the best way to mitigate these trees is to let the fire consume the fuel. The focus for Wednesday and yesterdays' tactics includes suppressing areas along the eastern edge of the fire identified by the infrared flights. Division A, H and Z have been placed into a patrol and monitor status, meaning firefighters will continue patrols to limit containment line threats. Division K and R will continue to have pockets of heat due to heavy trees being impacted and firefighters actively engaged in suppression efforts.

An initial damage assessment shows the Betty's Way Fire destroyed 4 primary residents and damaged countless outbuildings and agriculture infrastructure. No injuries or fatalities have been reported.

the overall goal for yesterday is to transition from the Nebraska Type 3 Incident Management team to Lincoln County and Custer County agencies and local fire departments. The team would like to thank all those who helped stabilized this wildfire.

The fire is not completely out. There are pockets of heat within the perimeter that will continue to burn and release smoke. We expect to see smoke for many days.

The Betty's Way Fire has been a team effort at the local, county and state level. Firefighters from all across the state assisted in suppressing this fire and have been invaluable assets in bringing it to an end. 98% containment for the Betty's Way Fire, according to officals 

&nbsp; LINCOLN, Neb. (March 1, 2024) – Nebraska Tourism is excited to announce the stops included in the 2024 Nebraska Passport program. The Passport inspires Nebraskans and tourists to travel throughout&nbsp;the state collecting stamps to earn prizes while also supporting Nebraska's tourism destinations and local businesses.

The Nebraska Passport program is entering its 15th year.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"Reaching 15 years of helping travelers discover some of Nebraska’s most charming attractions is worth celebrating," said John Ricks, Nebraska Tourism executive director. "Visitors and communities alike benefit from Passport season, and we are once again excited to kick off another round of adventures across the state in 2024."

The 2024 Passport will once again feature 70 attractions and 10 themed categories. Travelers will have from May 1 through September 30 to visit the attractions and collect their stamps.
