Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) would like to encourage everyone to take precautions to not get sick due to the heat this summer. Some simple precautions include drinking enough water, never leaving children or pets in cars, and signing up for heat alerts.

“Hundreds of people suffer from heat related illnesses and emergencies each year,” explains Kay Schmidt, Emergency Response Coordinator at SWNPHD. “You can avoid problems by knowing when there are going to be extra hot days.” The National Weather Service (NWS) uses several methods for calculating possible extreme temperatures and issues their official heat watches, warnings, and advisories. Sign up for alerts through the FEMA app or see the NWS website at weather.gov.

A young child’s body does not adapt to rising temperatures as effectively as an adult. A child’s temperature may rise 3 to 5 times faster than an adult, which makes any exposure to extreme heat more dangerous for them. Some other groups that are more vulnerable to heat-related emergencies are individuals with chronic illness, older adults, and pregnant women. Older adults or people with chronic diseases often take medications that cause problems if there is increased body temperature or extreme heat exposure.

Pets are also very vulnerable to hyperthermia (overheating) as they can only regulate heat through panting and small sweat glands on the pads of the paws. A temperature of 104 degrees puts your pets at risk of possible organ damage or death.

Heat-related emergencies can be prevented. Children, people with disabilities, and pets should never be left in a car. Temperatures can quickly rise as high as 50 degrees warmer than the outside air temperature. Within 10 minutes the inside temperature of a vehicle could reach a potentially fatal 109 degrees on a 90-degree day.

This summer as the weather becomes warmer you can use the following recommendations to help keep you, your family, and your pets safe:

•&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Stay in an air-conditioned indoor location as much as you can.

Don’t Let the Heat Make You Sick

Great Plains Health is proud to announce that Dr. Renee Engler has been appointed to the Nebraska Medical Association Political Action Committee (NMPAC) Board. The NMA Board of Directors appointed 12 physicians to the NMPAC Board at its May meeting, highlighting their commitment to active leadership in advocacy efforts.&nbsp;

Dr. Engler has demonstrated dedication and expertise in her field, making her a&nbsp; valuable addition to the NMPAC Board. Her experience includes serving as Chair of the&nbsp; Medical Executive Committee, Emergency Co-Medical Director, Chief of Medical Staff,&nbsp; Vice Chair of the Clinical Integration Network, and Emergency Medicine Resident&nbsp; Coordinator at Great Plains Health. Dr. Engler has been an active member of various&nbsp; committees, including Peer Review, Bylaws, and Credentials. She has educated&nbsp; hundreds of providers as an Advanced Trauma Life Support instructor throughout the&nbsp; region and received the UNMC Excellence in Educational Service Award in 2023.&nbsp; Additionally, she was a recipient of the Woman of Achievement Award for medical&nbsp; service in 2022.&nbsp;

Dr. Engler expressed her excitement for this new role.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Record-breaking summer travel and severe weather conditions are expected to persist all season long, which may prevent donors from being able to give. Haigler, NEB. - No injuries reported after a semi-truck was struck by a BNSF train on Friday near Haigler.&nbsp;

According to the Dundy County Sherrif's Office, on Friday, just before 11:45 am (mountain time), Dundy County Communications received a report of a BNSF train that hit a semi-truck hauling a heavy excavator near U.S. Highway 34 at Mile Marker 2.&nbsp;&nbsp;

According to officials, investigation shows the semi-truck became high centered when trying to cross the railroad tracks. The driver of the semi exited the vehicle before the train struck the semi-truck. He sustained no injuries. The crew of the train was also uninjured during the collision. The semi, trailer and at least one BNSF engine appear to have extensive disabling damage.&nbsp;

The Dundy County Sheriff's Office was assisted by Haigler Fire Department, Benkelman Fire Department and Dundy County Ambulance.&nbsp;

NDOT To Host Traffic Incident Management Field Exercise at Scottsbluff Airport

NORTH PLATTE, NEB.–– The 2024 University of Nebraska- Lincoln Wheat Variety Tour will stop in Grant, Nebraska at the Henry J. Stumpf International Wheat Research Center on June 12 and begin at 10 a.m. MDT. The field day is open to the public with no cost to attend.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The tours hosted by the UNL Crop Performance Testing Program, farmer-cooperators and UNL&nbsp; farm managers aim to give farmers insight into different wheat varieties and management&nbsp; practices for diseases and pests.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Following the tour, a complementary lunch will be provided to those in attendance. Meet Rodeo Royalty on Tuesday in North Platte

North Platte, Neb. - 7 Brew Drive-Thru Coffee Shop in North Platte is officially open and ready to serve. The drive-thru coffee shop is the latest addition to District 177.&nbsp;

A study line of cars has been keeping the staff at 7 Brew working and offer many different beverages choices from the "7 originals", cold brews, smoothies and so much more. The drive-through coffee shop also has a rewards program, and guests can earn points towards a free drink. To check out 7 Brew full menu,<a href="https://7brew.com/menu/" target="_blank"> click here</a>.&nbsp;

7 Brew began working on its North Platte location in the middle of April and completed construction towards the end of May. The coffee shop is at 909 South Dewey Street in North Platte.&nbsp;

North Platte, Neb. - The 2024 Miss Nebraska and Miss Nebraska's Teen were announced on Saturday as Raechel Warren of Omaha was crowned Miss Nebraska 2024 and Janae Harris of Omaha was crowned Miss Nebraska's Teen. 30 women competed the event which took place at North Platte High School.&nbsp;

For Warren, this is her 10th year in the Miss America program and says this is a dream come true after winning the title on Saturday night. She also wants to use this opportunity to represent Nebraska and promote her platform, "Encouraging youth to discover their passion and purpose by championing mentorship, encouraging community and creating opportunity for self-discovery."&nbsp;

Harris is preparing to start her senior year at Millard North where she is a member of the lacrosse team and is a participant in Millard North's STEM program, which allows students to take college courses. This was Harris' 3rd time ever competing in a pageant and it is a real honor to be crowned the 2024 Miss Nebraska's Teen.&nbsp;

The North Platte Police Department participated in the “And Then It Clicked”, high visibility, traffic enforcement campaign from May 20th 2024 to June 2nd, 2024.  Department wide, North Platte Police Officers had 263 traffic contacts. 

 Eighty-three drivers were issued citations.  Seventeen citations were issued for seatbelt violations.  Twenty-seven citations were issued for speeding violations, Eleven citations were issued for traffic control violations.  Two people were issued citations for reckless driving.  Eleven drivers were ticketed for operator’s license violations.  Six drivers were arrested for Driving Under the Influence of alcohol.  Four people were cited for possession of marijuana and approximately 55 grams of marijuana were seized.

North Platte, Ne - The Miss Rodeo Nebraska and Miss Teen Rodeo Nebraska competition begins Sunday at the Wild West Arena in North Platte. Nebraska is one of the only States that host their competition and pageant during a big rodeo event like the Buffalo Bill Rodeo at Nebraskaland Days according to 2010 Miss Rodeo Nebraska, Michelle Boeshart-Whitson. Whitson, who is the current MRN President says "we definetley set the bar, I think thats testimony to the amount of State Rodeo Queens that want to come to our pageant because they don't get a big stage from their own state."

North Platte, Ne - The Miss Rodeo Nebraska and Miss Teen Rodeo Nebraska competition begins Sunday at the Wild West Arena in North Platte. Nebraska is one of the only States that host their competition and pageant during a big rodeo event like the Buffalo Bill Rodeo at Nebraskaland Days according to 2010 Miss Rodeo Nebraska, Michelle Boeshart-Whitson. Whitson, who is the current MRN President says "we definetley set the bar, I think thats testimony to the amount of State Rodeo Queens that want to come to our pageant because they don't get a big stage from their own state."<figure>

Miss Rodeo Nebraska Contest ready to start on Sunday; Former Miss Rodeo Nebraska says the 2024 contest could be one for the books (Podcast)

Ogallala, Ne - The 2024 Keith County Big Give is off to a great start. After one week they've achieved their first goal. The first goal was a $5,000 addition to a $75,000 match; the community needed to raise $175,000 by 5pm on Friday, June 6 for the $,5000 addition to be added. As of 10am that day, the number already stood north of $177,000. &nbsp; North Platte, Neb. - The Miss Rodeo Nebraska Association is gearing up to kick off the 2024 Miss Rodeo Nebraska pageant which begins Sunday, June 9th and runs through Tuesday, June 12th. This year Miss Rodeo Nebraska is&nbsp;<a href="http://missrodeonebraska.org/" target="_blank">JoSee Saults</a>&nbsp;of Big Springs, Nebraska and Miss Teen Rodeo is&nbsp;<a href="http://missrodeonebraska.org/" target="_blank">Maci Cox</a>&nbsp;of North Platte.&nbsp; &nbsp;

This year, competing in the Miss Teen section includes Jaelyn Himmelberg of Blue Hill, NE, Maysen Merritt of NE and&nbsp;Sophia Schemper of Loomis. The Miss Nebraska contestants are Danielle Forster of Smithfield, NE, Ashlyn Mohling of Glenvil, NE and Brylee Thompson of Hershey.&nbsp;Too learn more about this year's contestants, check out their bios below.

Jaelyn Himmelberg is the 18-year-old daughter of Cassandra Himmelberg and John Himmelberg of Blue Hill, NE. She will be a freshman at Doane University in the fall majoring in biology with an emphasis on a Pre-Physician Assistant route. Jaelyn will continue her passion for dance at the collegiate level as a member of the Doane University Dance team. 

It is Jaelyn’s goal to return to rural Nebraska to practice as a Physician Assistant and serve the small Nebraska communities that have supported her.  Jaelyn also aspires to open a hippotherapy clinic to assist children and young adults with special needs, connecting her love of horses and her desire to help and serve others.

Maysen Merritt is a born and raised Nebraska cowgirl who loves to serve the Lord and everyone around her. She is the youngest daughter of Zach and Wendy Merritt. Maysen is the youngest generation living on her family’s ranch. 

 She is active in FFA and Quiz Bowl and loves to read in her spare time.  One of her favorite things is her horse Rosie, and they have competed in queen competitions, moved cows, went to many brandings, and cleared the arena at ranch rodeos.

Sophia Schemper is the 15-year-old of Jared and Dawn Schemper. She will be a sophomore at Loomis High School this fall, where she is active in volleyball, basketball, track, band, cheer, and FFA.  Sophia is an honor roll student and in the High Ability Learners program. 

 Outside of school, she is active in church youth group, 4-H, and Nebraska High School Rodeo, where she was a two-time National Finals qualifier in Junior High. When not busy with activities, she loves spending time on the lake with family.&nbsp;

Danielle Forster is the 24-year-old daughter of Kevin and Kim Forster of Smithfield, NE.  She is currently a second-year master’s student pursuing a degree in animal science with a specialization in extension and education at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

 Alongside her studies, Danielle serves as the UNL Horse Judging Coach and actively participates in the Animal Science Graduate Student Association.  She is also involved in her hometown rodeo club, where she coordinates the Elwood Rodeo Queen Pageant. In her free time, Danielle enjoys reading, collecting records, and cherishing moments with family and friends.

Ashlyn Mohling is the 22-year-old daughter of Brett and Heather Mohling from Glenvil, NE. She was raised on her family’s farming and commercial cow-calf operation.  She also grew up riding and showing her horses through 4-H and other organizations in various disciplines. Her experiences within the equine industry are what inspired her to further her education in animal care.

  In 2022, she graduated from the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture with an associate’s degree in veterinary technology. Since graduating, she has been practicing as a licensed veterinary technician at a mixed animal practice in south-central Nebraska.  When not working with animals, Ashlyn can be found baking, crafting, and spending time with her two cats, her friends, and her family.&nbsp;

Brylee Thompson is a 20-year-old from Hershey, Nebraska. She is a recent graduate from Mid Plains Community College in North Platte, where she achieved her business degree with an emphasis in entrepreneurship.  While at Mid Plains Community College, she was a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and named November Business Student of the month. 

 Brylee’s goals are to work in the agricultural industry and own her own business that would allow her to travel and support the sport of rodeo.  Brylee’s life goal is to always spread kindness and lift others up.  She wants to be a person who focuses on the positive in every aspect of her life.&nbsp;

Scottsbluff, Nebraska-The Scottsbluff Police Department has received a speed enforcement grant. The grant is funded by the Nebraska Department of Transportation Highway Safety Office. The funding will be used to pay officers to work overtime to patrol Broadway and 27th Street on Friday and Saturday nights.

Sergeant Philip Eckerberg said “this funding will allow Scottsbluff Police to address the numerous complaints of speeding and reckless driving that occurs during the cruising time on Friday and Saturday nights. Over the last 12 months there have been 146 non injury crashes, 20 injury crashes, one crash fatality, and 367 citations issued on the cruising route. Cruising has been a tradition in Scottsbluff since the mid-20TH century; however, this grant will help us to keep cruisers safe.”

The grant starts on Friday June 7TH, 2024 and continues through Saturday August 10TH, 2024. The funding is sufficient to pay for two officers to be out on the cruise route every Friday and Saturday evening during the grant.&nbsp;&nbsp;

For the calendar quarter beginning on&nbsp;October 1, 2024,&nbsp;the local sales and use tax rate changes will be:&nbsp;

There are no changes in county&nbsp;lodging tax&nbsp;rates for October 1, 2024.

As a reminder for the upcoming calendar quarter of July 1, 2024, there are no local sales and use tax rate changes or county lodging tax rate changes.

Per recent legislation (LB 1317, Section 81) changes were made to the&nbsp;state&nbsp;sales and use tax rate for&nbsp;Good Life District&nbsp;(GLD) transactions.&nbsp; Effective on&nbsp;July 1, 2024&nbsp;the&nbsp;state&nbsp;sales and use tax rate is 2.75% only on those transactions sourced to a GLD area that are also within the city boundaries. 

Transactions made within a GLD but that are OUTSIDE the boundaries of a city have a&nbsp;state&nbsp;rate of 5.5%. This currently only affects the GLD Nebraska Crossing Village District (GLD 802-802) which is located both outside and inside of Gretna’s city boundaries.&nbsp; The GLD Avenue One (GLD 801-801) is located entirely within Omaha, so this GLD has a&nbsp;state&nbsp;rate of 2.75%.&nbsp; 

Changes are being made to our sales and use tax returns for this change. &nbsp;The Sales Tax Rate Finder on our website will show these different rates on and after July 1, 2024.&nbsp;

 <li>Adams&nbsp;will impose a new 1% rate;</li><li>Grafton&nbsp;and&nbsp;Kenesaw&nbsp;will each impose a new 1.5% rate;</li><li>Lyons&nbsp;will increase its rate from 1.5% to 2%; and &nbsp;&nbsp;</li><li>Mullen&nbsp;and&nbsp;Nelson&nbsp;will each increase their rate from 1% to 1.5%.&nbsp;</li>
