The Hot Sheets: April 17th, 2024

The North Platte Community College music department will have its end-of-year concert April 30. It will begin at 7 p.m. in the McDonald-Belton Theater on the NPCC South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Rd., in North Platte.

The “We Are One” themed multicultural concert will feature performances by the Jazzy Knights, Knightingales and Knightly Singers.

The Sioux Nation, Israel, Norway, South Africa and American jazz will all be represented in the song selections.

“Our final concert will feature talented and hardworking musicians who have bright futures in music,” said Kristin Simpson, music instructor. “We will hear a solo from sophomore Trenton Emmons on tenor saxophone, performing a selection from his upcoming sophomore recital. Additionally, I am excited to present three of the musicians with well-earned awards: Outstanding Musician, Outstanding Instrumentalist and Musician of the Year.”

The concert is free and open to the public. There will be a reception afterward in the fireplace area of the McDonald-Belton Building.

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department

Warmer weather has arrived and with it comes ticks.&nbsp; Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) would like to remind everyone to stay safe from tick bites that can spread disease to humans. Diseases carried by ticks in southwest Nebraska are: Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Tularemia, and Ehrlichiosis. Although there are ticks that carry Lyme Disease in other areas of Nebraska, these ticks have not been found in southwest Nebraska.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Several tick-borne diseases are transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected tick,” shares Melissa Propp, SWNPHD Clinic Manager. “These diseases can be severe or even fatal if not treated in the first few days of symptoms. See your doctor immediately if you have been bitten by a tick and then experience symptoms like high fever, muscle pain, severe headache, or rash.”&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;SWNPHD will be working with Nebraska Department of Health and Humans Services (DHHS) again this year to help identify which ticks are living in the health district by doing tick drags in strategic areas. Tick dragging is a method for collecting ticks where a strip of white cloth is tied to a rope or pole and dragged around through areas that are likely to have ticks, such as wooded areas or areas with tall grasses or weeds. The ticks are then sent to a lab to be counted and to identify the species living in our area. SWNPHD will be doing tick drags from May until July.&nbsp;

It is a good idea to take preventive measures against ticks year-round, but especially in warmer months when ticks are most active. Some suggestions include:&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;“If you are in areas with the potential for ticks, we recommend that you bathe or shower as soon as possible after coming indoors,” explains Propp. “It will be easier to find and wash off ticks that are crawling instead of attached.”&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

North Platte, Neb. - The Guardians of the Children are getting ready for the 8th Annual Child Abuse Awareness and Family Appreciation Day this Saturday from 11:00am - 2:00pm at the D&amp;N Event Center in North Platte. The event is free for the public to attend. The event known as the "bike event" is a great way to give children a brand-new bike. Many businesses and organizations have donated brand new bikes to the Guardians of the Children.&nbsp;

(Audio) Guardians of the Children getting ready for 8th Annual Child Abuse Awareness and Family Appreciation Day this weekend

KEARNEY – Eighteen students from across the state will study at the University of Nebraska at Kearney as part of the prestigious&nbsp;<a href="https://www.unk.edu/admissions/kearney-law-opportunities-program/">Kearney Law Opportunities Program</a>&nbsp;(KLOP).

Launched in 2016, KLOP is a partnership between UNK and the University of Nebraska College of Law designed to recruit and train students from rural Nebraska who will return to these communities to practice law. The scholarship program addresses an ongoing need for more attorneys in greater Nebraska.

All KLOP participants receive a partial room waiver and tuition assistance during their time at UNK, with most scholarships covering the full cost of tuition. The program also offers academic support, including one-on-one mentorship from faculty and peers, along with professional development opportunities.

KLOP members connect with current law students, judges, attorneys and other professionals during on-campus events and frequent visits to the Nebraska College of Law in Lincoln, with these interactions leading to internships both locally and nationally. They’re encouraged to participate in undergraduate research and other experiential learning activities, including field study courses that allow them to learn about international human rights law during a&nbsp;<a href="https://unknews.unk.edu/2023/02/09/unk-students-travel-to-europe-to-learn-about-international-law/">two-week trip to Europe</a>&nbsp;and the politics and law of the Civil Rights Movement during a&nbsp;<a href="https://unknews.unk.edu/2024/02/13/powerful-experience-unk-political-science-students-learn-about-civil-rights-in-the-south/">one-week trip to the Southern U.S</a>.

After receiving a bachelor’s degree at UNK, students are guaranteed admission into the Nebraska College of Law, provided GPA and Law School Admission Test (LSAT) requirements are met.

The 18 high school seniors recently accepted into KLOP represent the program’s largest-ever incoming class. Program director and political science professor Chuck Rowling called them an “extremely impressive” group.

“I have had the privilege of meeting and getting to know each of these students over the past year, either through UNK Pre-Law Day, the KLOP interview process or other campus visits. Without question, these students are eager to take full advantage of the numerous intellectual, experiential learning and professional development opportunities awaiting them at UNK. And I am certain, in the years to come, that this group will have a profound impact in addressing the ongoing need for legal services and representation in greater Nebraska,” said Rowling, who also serves as chair of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.unk.edu/academics/psci/index.php">UNK Department of Political Science</a>.

The KLOP program is available to Nebraska students outside Lincoln and the Omaha metropolitan area. Participants can major in any academic area as long as they plan to pursue a law degree.

UNK law program continues growth with largest-ever incoming class 

Marilyn McGahan has been chosen to receive the 2024 President’s Award from Mid-Plains Community College.

McGahan said she was “surprised, humbled and honored” by the selection.&nbsp;She will be recognized at the college’s commencement ceremony in North Platte May 10.

“How rewarding it is to realize I have been part of working with many others to provide outstanding opportunities for higher education and workforce training in our part of the country,”&nbsp;McGahan said. “We have all had a part in the continued growth and success of Mid-Plains Community College and all those associated with it.”

McGahan has a longstanding relationship with the college and with education in general. She and her husband Bill moved to North Platte in 1966 to take teaching jobs at the North Platte Catholic Schools. He taught music and English, and Marilyn taught business education.

By 1971, the couple had four children, and Marilyn was no longer working full-time. Instead, she took a job as an adjunct instructor for the college that would eventually become MPCC.

“I started out teaching an accounting class and a typing class as a result of the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act. As long as the CETA program existed, I had a job,” Marilyn said.

She and Bill had their fifth and last child in 1972, and two years later, Marilyn was hired as a full-time business instructor at the college – leading to double duty as a busy mother and career woman with a newly ignited passion for higher education.

Driven to improve her skills, Marilyn went on to earn a Master of Arts Degree in Education, Vocational and Technical Education and Business from the University of Nebraska at Kearney in 1977 before completing additional postgraduate work at UNK, Fort Hays State University and Chadron State College.

Marilyn took on the role of business division chair for MPCC’s campuses in North Platte in 1997 while continuing to maintain a full teaching load. By 2000, she was overseeing the business division for all Mid-Plains campuses.

When the vice president job became available in North Platte in 2003, Marilyn applied for it and was hired. She didn’t have a doctorate at the time – a preferred qualification for the position. However, she did have extensive leadership experience from being part of the local hospital board, the North Platte Development Corporation board and various professional education organizations.

“Those kinds of things weighed heavily,” said Marilyn. “Once I got the job, I took a 15-credit hour graduate program from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln on community college leadership. It was online and extremely helpful.”

One of her greatest accomplishments during her tenure at MPCC, was the facilitation of the planning and construction of a new Health and Science Center on South Campus. The project started in the ’90s and became a reality in 2012.

Other highlights included the implementation of distance learning and leading a group of auto body and automotive technology students on a trip to North Lindsey College in Scunthorpe, England as part of an exchange program.

Her professionalism and dedication didn’t go unnoticed. The following are some of the many awards Marilyn was honored with over the years:

“I believe the best possible education and workforce training opportunities should be available to all who want to participate,” Marilyn said. “I also believe those two things are vital for the growth of every community, regardless of the size or location. I have had the opportunity to work with many others who believe the same and are willing to work to make it happen.”

Marilyn retired in August of 2011. While she no longer has an office at the college, she remains a familiar face at MPCC events and continues to be involved in its upward momentum.

Some of the many ways she has stayed connected since retirement have included participating in strategic planning sessions, serving as keynote speaker for the Expanding Your Horizons Conference, reviewing an accreditation report for the Higher Learning Commission, updating alumni records for the Office of Institutional Advancement and teaching an online Medical Terminology class.

Marilyn also recently made the decision to include the NPCC Foundation in her will. Her hope is that the bequest will help the college continue to grow and provide additional opportunities for students to further their education – whether that’s through scholarships or the addition of new resources or programs.

In 2016, a tree was planted in Marilyn’s honor outside the Health and Science Center as a visual reminder of the impact she has had and the difference she has made in the lives of countless students.&nbsp;&nbsp;

 </figure>Heather JohnsonMPCCMarilyn McGahan has been chosen to receive the 2024 President’s Award from Mid-Plains Community College.McGahan said she was “surprised, humbled and honored” by the selection.&nbsp;She will be recognized at the college’s commencement ceremony in North Platte May 10.“How rewarding it is to realize I have been part of working with many others to provide outstanding opportunities for higher education and workforce training in our part of the country,”&nbsp;McGahan said. “We have all had a part in the continued growth and success of Mid-Plains Community College and all those associated with it.”The early daysMcGahan has a longstanding relationship with the college and with education in general. She and her husband Bill moved to North Platte in 1966 to take teaching jobs at the North Platte Catholic Schools. He taught music and English, and Marilyn taught business education.By 1971, the couple had four children, and Marilyn was no longer working full-time. Instead, she took a job as an adjunct instructor for the college that would eventually become MPCC.“I started out teaching an accounting class and a typing class as a result of the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act. As long as the CETA program existed, I had a job,” Marilyn said.She and Bill had their fifth and last child in 1972, and two years later, Marilyn was hired as a full-time business instructor at the college – leading to double duty as a busy mother and career woman with a newly ignited passion for higher education.<figure>

 </figure>Working her way upDriven to improve her skills, Marilyn went on to earn a Master of Arts Degree in Education, Vocational and Technical Education and Business from the University of Nebraska at Kearney in 1977 before completing additional postgraduate work at UNK, Fort Hays State University and Chadron State College.Marilyn took on the role of business division chair for MPCC’s campuses in North Platte in 1997 while continuing to maintain a full teaching load. By 2000, she was overseeing the business division for all Mid-Plains campuses.When the vice president job became available in North Platte in 2003, Marilyn applied for it and was hired. She didn’t have a doctorate at the time – a preferred qualification for the position. However, she did have extensive leadership experience from being part of the local hospital board, the North Platte Development Corporation board and various professional education organizations.“Those kinds of things weighed heavily,” said Marilyn. “Once I got the job, I took a 15-credit hour graduate program from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln on community college leadership. It was online and extremely helpful.”One of her greatest accomplishments during her tenure at MPCC, was the facilitation of the planning and construction of a new Health and Science Center on South Campus. The project started in the ’90s and became a reality in 2012.Other highlights included the implementation of distance learning and leading a group of auto body and automotive technology students on a trip to North Lindsey College in Scunthorpe, England as part of an exchange program.Her professionalism and dedication didn’t go unnoticed.  </ul>“I believe the best possible education and workforce training opportunities should be available to all who want to participate,” Marilyn said. “I also believe those two things are vital for the growth of every community, regardless of the size or location. I have had the opportunity to work with many others who believe the same and are willing to work to make it happen.”Maintaining a presenceMarilyn retired in August of 2011. While she no longer has an office at the college, she remains a familiar face at MPCC events and continues to be involved in its upward momentum.Some of the many ways she has stayed connected since retirement have included participating in strategic planning sessions, serving as keynote speaker for the Expanding Your Horizons Conference, reviewing an accreditation report for the Higher Learning Commission, updating alumni records for the Office of Institutional Advancement and teaching an online Medical Terminology class.Marilyn also recently made the decision to include the NPCC Foundation in her will. Her hope is that the bequest will help the college continue to grow and provide additional opportunities for students to further their education – whether that’s through scholarships or the addition of new resources or programs.In 2016, a tree was planted in Marilyn’s honor outside the Health and Science Center as a visual reminder of the impact she has had and the difference she has made in the lives of countless students.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Tysver also stated that no one was injured during the derailment. The incident occurred about four miles east of Kearney near the intersection of Poole Avenue and Nebraska Highway 30.&nbsp;

Buffalo County Sheriff’s Department was contacted shortly after the incident and were on scene. The incident is under investigation.&nbsp;

 List of 2024 McCook Community College graduates released

North Platte Community College has released its list of graduates for the 2023-24 academic year.

The nursing students will be honored during a pinning and commencement ceremony at 12:30 p.m. May 10 in the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium on the NPCC South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Rd., in North Platte.

The rest of the students will be recognized during the general commencement ceremony at 3 p.m. in the gym. Both ceremonies are free and open to the public.

Twelve new members were inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society at North Platte Community College Sunday.

They are NPCC students:&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

PTK is the world’s largest and most prestigious honor society for two-year college students, and NPCC is home to the Alpha Beta Theta chapter.

Students are invited to join based on their grade point average. To be considered, they must complete a minimum of 12 credit hours and have a GPA of at least 3.5.

NPCC’s induction ceremony included a presentation by psychology instructor Courtney Johnston, a candle lighting and a presentation of yellow stoles, which new inductees will wear at commencement May 10.

NPCC inducts Phi Theta Kappa members

Seven high school students will earn associate degrees from Mid-Plains Community College this year before receiving their high school diplomas.

The accomplishment comes after all of them successfully completed enough qualifying classes through MPCC’s early entry program.

Often referred to as concurrent enrollment or dual credit, early entry courses allow high school students to take college-level classes and earn credits toward both a high school diploma and a college degree simultaneously.

<a>This year’s associate degree recipients and their high schools are:</a>

“These graduates are great examples of high school students utilizing the expanded early entry offerings at Mid-Plains Community College to earn associate degrees,” said Kayla Thurman, director of Early Entry and Program Development at MPCC. “Early entry is more accessible to area students than ever before. They can enroll in classes online, at their high schools or attend in-person at any MPCC campus location. I would like to congratulate all the students on their achievements this year.”

Bancroft had the most college credits of the group with 66. She began taking dual credit classes, as well as classes strictly for college credit, as a sophomore in high school.

“I am really glad that I had the opportunity,” Bancroft said. “It will be easier for me in the long run. It will save me a lot of money, and I won’t have to worry about taking generals in college. I can focus on what I want to do.”

Bancroft’s long-term goal is to pursue a career in the field of accounting.

North Platte, Ne - Joe Bellm, CEO and promoter of BST announced Monday afternoon that the double -header opening weekend dirt races that were planned for this Friday &amp; Saturday have been postponed due to forecasted temperatures in the 40's this weekend.&nbsp;

It was going to be an epic weekend of Sprint Cars with former World of Outlaws champ Sammy Swindell planning to be in North Platte for the weekend. Bellm said "we're postponing this because of the fan experiance". He said "no fans want to sit out in the cold and watch cars go in circles when its likely colder than 40's being that we race at night".&nbsp;

The double header will likely be postponed until May 17 &amp; 18, also a Friday/Saturday and the Northern &amp; Southern Plains ASCS Sprint cars&nbsp; are open that weekend and Bellm believes it may be a better weekend for racing anyway. Stay tuned to Eagle Radio for dates.&nbsp;

The next racing at Lincoln County Raceway will be on May 4th in North Platte which will be "Nascar Night". Former Nascar drivers Kenny Wallace and Kenny Schrader are scheduled to race that night in North Platte. Racing at Lincoln County Raceway this weekend postponed due to forecast

Chappell, Neb. - Union Pacific is currently investigating what caused a intermodal train to derail Sunday afternoon in Chappell.&nbsp;

According to Union Pacific Spokesperson Meg Siffring, at about 4:00 p.m. CT/3:00 p.m. MT, on April 14, approximately 35 Union Pacific train cars derailed near Highway 385 and Junky Rd in Chappell. The UP train was traveling along the Sidney Subdivision.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The train derailment caused US Highway 30 in both directions to close from Lodgepole to US Highway 21 for about 2 hours. Traffic was being diverted to I-80 as an alternate route during the time. The west side of Chappell was evacuated but the evacuation was lifted around 7:45 p.m. CT/6:45 p.m. MT according to the Chappell Volunteer Fire Department.&nbsp;

According to Siffring in a written statement to the POST, there were no injuries. Cleanup is underway, and the cause of the derailment is under investigation.&nbsp;

The train derailment caused US Highway 30 in both directions to close from Lodgepole to US Highway 21 for about 2 hours. US Highway 30 is now open in both directions according to NE 511. The derailment blocked both tracks. The UP train was traveling along the Sidney Subdivision.

Union Pacific crews are on scene working on the cleanup process of the derailment. It is unknown what caused the train to derail, if there are any injuries or fatalities resulting from the derailment at this time. The POST has reached out to Union Pacific and is awaiting a response.&nbsp;

Union Pacific says 35 cars derailed in Sunday's derailment in Chappell

(April 15, 2024) Lexington, Neb.&nbsp;–&nbsp;<a href="http://www.dawsonpower.com/" target="_blank">Dawson Public Power District</a>&nbsp;has awarded Isaac Anderson the 2024 Dawson PPD Utility Line Scholarship. The scholarship is valued at $2,000. Anderson, of North Platte, is the son of Patrick and Katie Lussetto, also of North Platte. He is currently attending&nbsp;<a href="https://northeast.edu/degrees-and-programs/utility-line" target="_blank">Northeast Community College in Norfolk</a>.

“I contemplated several professional fields to enter after high school,” Anderson wrote in his application essay. “I liked the idea of working outdoors, working with my hands, and operating some good-sized machinery and trucks. Each day, there is something new and challenging to learn. Most of all, I really like to idea of helping people and making sure their electricity will be working, which is vital to homes and businesses and in some cases means life and death.”

The Dawson PPD Utility Line Scholarship has been awarded to one student annually since 2001.

“We’re proud to support the education of our future lineworkers,” said Dawson PPD Manager of Operations Jeremy Kaiser. “Safety is key in this line of work, and education is the vessel that gets us there. The train derailment caused US Highway 30 in both directions to close from Lodgepole to US Highway 21 for about 2 hours. US Highway 30 is now open in both directions according to NE 511. The derailment blocked both tracks. North Platte, Neb. - The Mid-Plains United Way is preparing to announce the 2024-2025 agency partners as the board is finalizing the last presentations from non-profits who submitted in an application. The new agencies will be announced sometime next week. As the campaign year ends, the united way is around $169,000 out of the $200,000 goal and making a last push effort. &nbsp;

Folks can now donate monthly if they like or May 8th is Giving Day which the united way will be a part of. As details become available, Mid-Plains United Way is preparing to host an event in June called human tractor pull. The event will run during NebraskaLand Days.&nbsp;
